13. Resisting the Silence: The Impact of Digital Communication on Young People's Talk about Suicide

Abstract

Suicide prevention strategies include attempts to control information young people receive about suicide, but digital communication provides young people with alternative forums to engage with this issue. This article explores the constraints and opportunities for youth to talk about suicide in New Zealand. A thematic analysis of data from focus groups with young people suggests they resist what they see as a taboo on talking about suicide, see adults as unwilling to engage in conversations with them about suicide, and are reluctant to seek help for suicide from mental health professionals. They prefer to talk about suicide with peers, although there are challenges with doing this in person. Access to digital communication may provide young people with alternative forums to communicate about suicide which further undermines their willingness to engage with adults on the subject. This has led to a gap in communication between youth and adults on suicide.

Abstract

This thesis describes the processes and outcomes of planned pedagogical improvement in a group of independent preparatory schools. It is an ethnographic investigation of these schools, which were researched and reported as multiple composite case studies. The research focuses upon two unusual and different aspects of school improvement. Firstly, a central theme of the study is the importance of the dynamic between improvement in classroom practice and the concomitant modification to school organisational arrangements.T he cases tudiesi nvestigate the essenceo f the mteractional processes that the schools experienced during implementing a process of pedagogical improvement, and as a result, a model is proposed to suggest a possible way of understanding the school improvement processes in these schools. Secondly, the research has been undertaken in the independent primary (preparatory) sector, where there has been little research undertaken and a dearth of literature that is useful and relevant to the culture of these schools specifically. The thesis examines and analysest he constraints,p roblems and successesth at the schools faced; and in particular considers individual and organisational capacity building, the stages that the teachers and schools moved through, the processes, consequences and outcomes and whether the pedagogical improvements could be sustained. The writer presents an empirical model of the process and argues that the evidence could be related, in a meaningful way, to other independent preparatory schools. The outcomes of the evidence appears to indicate that effective pedagogical improvement processes, that focus on modifying classroom practice and improving children's achievement, can be strategies for educational change; which can lead to adaptations and improvements within the organisational management arrangements, systems and controls within the school to support teaching and learning.

25. Student Perspectives on Homework

Abstract

Teachers are finding that a number of students do not complete homework assignments for various reasons, and have long experienced the frustration of students who do not or will not complete their homework assignments. The purpose of this action research project was to research ninth grade freshmen student attitudes about homework at a single large urban public high school. Data from surveys was compiled and aggregate frequency counts of students' responses for each of the survey items were tabulated. According to the data obtained from the 136 freshmen respondents, only 39% reported completed their homework frequently. Sixty-nine percent of the students surveyed indicated that they think homework is meaningful and that it reinforces concepts learned in class, while 64% of the students disagreed with the statement that homework served little or no purpose. Based on the results from this study, educators may need to help students to see and know that their homework assignments are meaningful and that it is not just "busy work." Students need to realize that homework can help them succeed academically and intellectually. (Contains 3 tables.)

Abstract

This 2-section guide covers both professionally-produced documentaries for a general viewing audience and footage produced by researchers for their own viewing in data collection and analysis. The first section, which focuses on edited documentaries, includes information on how documentaries are produced and on usefulness and realism, a catalog of edited documentaries about schools, and advice on showing and discussing the documentary with an audience. The second section discusses the production and use of research documents, approaches and purposes, and how to present research footage to audiences. An annotated bibliography and a short list of research projects are included. Five main topics are interspersed throughout the guide: (1) issues in making and showing footage for effective teaching in research and staff development; (2) viewers' perspectives and expectations; (3) points of access to networks of documentary film products, distributors, and researchers who use audiovisual documents; (4) an introduction to basic intellectual sources, especially in the research literature; and (5) consumer protection information about unintentional and intentional distortion and about ethical problems in the production and use of commercial and research footage. 29. Dewey Revisited: A Pragmatic-Experiential Model for Teacher Education. A Thematic Topic for 'The Educational Forum.'

Abstract

This paper shares the development and evolution of a pragmatic-experiential model of teacher education at the University of West Alabama. The model is grounded in the theories and philosophies promoted by Dewey and James. The philosophy of pragmatism encourages testing the authenticity or truth of ideas through experience. Experientialism, an elaboration of pragmatism, views knowledge as most useful when tested in a social context. The educational practices utilized within the model encourage the development of teachers who are committed to developing citizens for democracy. More specifically, the pragmatic-experiential model prepares teachers who: (1) participate in collaboration to recognize the social nature of learning and the power of the collective community; (2) employ application for progression of professional growth from a novice candidate in pre-professional experiences to consciously pragmatic-experiential teachers; (3) practice inquiry to make discoveries in response to novel situations and to pose questions as critical thinkers in planning and decision-making; and (4) utilize reflection to engage in a disciplined analysis of situations which generates alternatives and results in deeper understanding. The students develop these competencies through a logical sequence of courses and experiences in general studies, professional studies, pracitcums, and student teaching. (Author/ND)

Examines relationships between structural characteristics of students' concept maps about chemical equilibrium and independent measures of their achievement in chemistry. Results indicate significant relationships between multidimensional scaling coordinates and test scores of recall of knowledge and its application and also reveal structural differences in conceptual organization among students with different levels of achievement.
