Based on its simple valence electron configuration, we may expect lithium to have straightforward physical properties that are easily explained. However, solid lithium, when cooled below 77 K, develops a complex structure that has been debated for decades. A close parallel is found in sodium below 36 K where the crystal structure still remains unresolved. In this letter, we explore a possible driving force behind this complexity. We begin with the observation that Li and Na form close-packed structures at low temperatures. We demonstrate a gauge symmetry that forces \textit{all} close-packed structures to have the same electronic energy and, in fact, the very same band structure. This symmetry requires two conditions: (a) bands must arise from $s$ orbitals, and (b) hoppings beyond second-nearest neighbours must be negligible. We argue that both can be reasonably invoked in Li and Na. When these conditions are satisfied, we have extensive degeneracy with the number of competing iso-energetic structures growing exponentially with linear system size. Weak effects, such as $p$-orbital admixture, long-range hopping and phonon zero-point energy, can break this symmetry. These can play a decisive role in `selecting' one particular ordered structure. This point of view may explain the occurrence of ordered structures in Li and Na under pressure. We introduce a lattice model to probe the effect of active self-disassembly on equilibrium self-assembly. Surprisingly, we find conditions under which active self-disassembly enhances the yield of a target structure above that achieved by self-assembly alone when the latter is already favoured thermodynamically. A unique bistable transition has been identified in granular/colloidal gel-composites, resulting from shear-induced phase separation of the gel phase into dense blobs. In energy applications, it is critical to understand how this transition influences electrical performance. Mixing conductive colloids with conductive inclusions, we find the conductivity and elasticity move in concert, both decreasing in the collapsed phase-separated state. Surprisingly, with insulating inclusions these properties can become decoupled, with the conductivity instead increasing despite the collapse of the gel structure.

Soft amorphous materials are viscoelastic solids ubiquitously found around us, from clays and cementitious pastes to emulsions and physical gels encountered in food or biomedical engineering. Under an external deformation, these materials undergo a noteworthy transition from a solid to a liquid state that reshapes the material microstructure. This yielding transition was the main theme of a workshop held from January 9 to 13, 2023 at the Lorentz Center in Leiden. The manuscript presented here offers a critical perspective on the subject, synthesizing insights from the various brainstorming sessions and informal discussions that unfolded during this week of vibrant exchange of ideas. Non-Newtonian fluids can be used for the protection of flexible laminates. Understanding the coupling between the flow of the protecting fluid and the deformation of the protected solids is necessary in order to optimise this functionality. We present a scaling analysis of the problem based on a single coupling variable, the effective width of a squeeze flow between flat rigid plates, and predict that impact protection for laminates is optimised by using shear-thinning, and not shear-thickening, fluids. The prediction is verified experimentally by measuring the velocity and pressure in impact experiments. The ability to manipulate rheological and electrical properties of colloidal carbon black gels makes them attractive in composites for energy applications such as batteries and fuel cells, where they conduct electricity and prevent sedimentation of `granular' active components. While it is commonly assumed that granular fillers have a simple additive effect on the composite properties, new phenomena can emerge unexpectedly, with some composites exhibiting a unique rheological bi-stability between solid-like and liquid-like states. Here we report such bi-stability in suspensions of non-Brownian graphite and colloidal carbon black in oil, a model system to mimic composite suspensions for energy applications. Steady shear below a critical stress elicits a transition to a persistent mechanically weak and poorly conducting state, which must be `rejuvenated' using high-stress shear to recover a stronger, high-conductivity state. Our findings highlight the highly tunable nature of binary granular/gel composite suspensions, and present new possibilities for optimizing mixing and processing conditions for Li-ion battery slurries.

The recently-discovered high-entropy oxides offer a paradoxical combination of crystalline arrangement and high disorder. They differ qualitatively from established paradigms for disordered solids such as glasses and alloys. In these latter systems, it is well known that disorder induces localized vibrational excitations. In this article, we explore the possibility of disorder-induced localization in (MgCoCuNiZn)O, the prototypical high-entropy oxide with rock-salt structure. To describe phononic excitations, we model the interatomic potentials for the cation-oxygen interactions by fitting to the physical properties of the parent binary oxides. We validate our model against the experimentally determined crystal structure, bond lengths, and optical conductivity. The resulting phonon spectrum shows wave-like propagating modes at low energies and localized modes at high energies. Localization is reflected in signatures such as participation ratio and correlation amplitude. Finally, we explore the possibility of increased mass disorder in the oxygen sublattice. Admixing sulphur or tellurium atoms with oxygen enhances localization. It even leads to localized modes in the middle of the spectrum. Superconducting quantum circuits are a natural platform for quantum simulations of a wide variety of important lattice models describing topological phenomena, spanning condensed matter and high-energy physics. One such model is the bosonic analogue of the well-known fermionic Kitaev chain, a 1D tight-binding model with both nearest-neighbor hopping and pairing terms. Despite being fully Hermitian, the bosonic Kitaev chain exhibits a number of striking features associated with non-Hermitian systems, including chiral transport and a dramatic sensitivity to boundary conditions known as the non-Hermitian skin effect. Here, using a multimode superconducting parametric cavity, we implement the bosonic Kitaev chain in synthetic dimensions. The lattice sites are mapped to frequency modes of the cavity, and the $\textit{in situ}$ tunable complex hopping and pairing terms are created by parametric pumping at the mode-difference and mode-sum frequencies, respectively. We experimentally demonstrate important precursors of nontrivial topology and the non-Hermitian skin effect in the bosonic Kitaev chain, including chiral transport, quadrature wavefunction localization, and sensitivity to boundary conditions. Our experiment is an important first step towards exploring genuine many-body non-Hermitian quantum dynamics.

The hydrodynamic regime of the Stribeck curve giving the friction coefficient $\mu$ as a function of the dimensionless relative sliding speed (the Sommerfeld number, $S$) of two contacting non-conformal surfaces is usually considered trivial, with $\mu \sim S$. We predict that for conformal surfaces contacting over large areas, a combination of independent length scales gives rise to a universal power-law with a non-trivial exponent, $\mu\sim S^{2/3}$, for a thick lubrication film. Deviations as the film thins (decreasing $S$) may superficially resemble the onset of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, but are due to a crossover between hydrodynamic regimes. We show that the hydrodynamic lubrication of contacting conformal surfaces with a typical texture height gives rise to a universal behaviour in the Stribeck curve in which the friction coefficient shows an anomalous power-law dependence on the Sommerfeld number, $\mu \sim S^{2/3}$. When the gap height drops below the `texture length scale', deviations from $S^{2/3}$ occur, which may resemble the onset of elasto-hydrodynamic and mixed lubrication. Differential dynamic microscopy (DDM) can be used to extract mean particle size from videos of suspensions. However, many suspensions have multimodal particle size distributions (PSDs), for which this is not a sufficient description. After clarifying how different particle sizes contribute to the signal in DDM, we show that standard DDM analysis can extract the mean sizes of two populations in a bimodal suspension given prior knowledge of the sample's bimodality. Further, the use of the CONTIN algorithm obviates the need for such prior knowledge. Finally, we show that by selectively analysing portions of the DDM images, we can size a trimodal suspension where the large particles would otherwise dominate the signal, again without prior knowledge of the trimodality., Comment: Main Body: 10 pages, 8 figures. Attractive colloids diffuse and aggregate to form gels, solid-like particle networks suspended in a fluid. Gravity is known to strongly impact the stability of gels once they are formed. However, its effect on the process of gel formation has seldom been studied. Here, we simulate the effect of gravity on gelation using both Brownian dynamics and a lattice-Boltzmann algorithm that accounts for hydrodynamic interactions. We work in a confined geometry to capture macroscopic, buoyancy-induced flows driven by the density mismatch between fluid and colloids. These flows give rise to a stability criterion for network formation, based on an effective accelerated sedimentation of nascent clusters at low volume fractions that disrupts gelation. Above a critical volume fraction, mechanical strength in the forming gel network dominates the dynamics: the interface between the colloid-rich and colloid-poor region moves downward at an ever decreasing rate. Finally, we analyze the asymptotic state, the colloidal gel-like sediment, which we find not to be appreciably impacted by the vigorous flows that can occur during the settling of the colloids. We characterize the full spatiotemporal gait of populations of swimming {\it Escherichia coli} using renewal processes to analyze the measurements of intermediate scattering functions. This allows us to demonstrate quantitatively how the persistence length of an engineered strain can be controlled by a chemical inducer and to report a controlled transition from perpetual tumbling to smooth swimming. For wild-type {\it E.~coli}, we measure simultaneously the microscopic motility parameters and the large-scale effective diffusivity, hence quantitatively bridging for the first time small-scale directed swimming and macroscopic diffusion.

We introduce a numerical method to extract the parameters of run-and-tumble dynamics from experimental measurements of the intermediate scattering function. We show that proceeding in Laplace space is unpractical and employ instead renewal processes to work directly in real time. We first validate our approach against data produced using agent-based simulations. This allows us to identify the length and time scales required for an accurate measurement of the motility parameters, including tumbling frequency and swim speed. We compare different models for the run-and-tumble dynamics by accounting for speed variability at the single-cell and population level, respectively. Finally, we apply our approach to experimental data on wild-type Escherichia coli obtained using differential dynamic microscopy., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

A recent theory suggests that the evaporation kinetics of macromolecular solutions is insensitive to the ambient relative humidity (RH) due to the formation of a `polarisation layer' of solutes at the air-solution interface. We confirm this insensitivity up to RH~80% in the evaporation of polyvinyl alcohol solutions from open-ended capillaries. To explain the observed drop in evaporation rate at higher RH, we need to invoke compressive stresses due to interfacial polymer gelation. Moreover, RH-insensitive evaporation sets in earlier than theory predicts, suggesting a further role for a gelled `skin'. In this VERTICO science paper we aim to study how the star formation process depends on galactic environment and gravitational interactions in the context of galaxy evolution. We explore the scaling relation between the star formation rate (SFR) surface density and the molecular gas surface density, also known as the Kennicutt-Schmidt (KS) relation, in a subsample of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies. We use new ACA and TP observations from the VERTICO-ALMA Large Program at 720pc resolution to resolve the molecular gas content, as traced by the 12CO(2-1) transition, across the disks of 37 spiral galaxies in the Virgo cluster. In combination with archival observations, we estimate the parameters of the KS relation for the entire ensemble of galaxies, and within individual galaxies. We find the KS slope for the entire population to be N=0.97+/-0.07, with a characteristic molecular gas depletion time of 1.86Gyr for our full sample, in agreement with previous work in isolated star-forming galaxies. In individual galaxies, we find KS slopes ranging between 0.69 and 1.40, and typical star formation efficiencies (SFE) that can vary from galaxy to galaxy by a factor of ~4. These galaxy-to-galaxy variations account for ~0.20dex in scatter in the ensemble KS relation, which is characterized by a 0.42dex scatter. We find that the HI-deficient galaxies in the Virgo cluster show a steeper resolved KS relation and lower molecular gas efficiencies than HI-normal cluster galaxies. While the molecular gas content in Virgo cluster galaxies appears to behave similarly to that in isolated galaxies, our VERTICO sample shows that cluster environments play a key role in regulating star formation. The environmental mechanisms affecting the HI galaxy content also have a direct impact in the SFE of molecular gas in cluster galaxies, leading to longer depletion times in HI-deficient members., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics
