The present cross-sectional study was designed to investigate the relationship between exercise training and resting metabolic rate (RMR). The focus of this investigation was to compare RMR in aerobically trained (AT), resistance trained (RT), and untrained (UNT) women. Subjects were also classified as highly trained (HT), moderately trained (MT), or untrained (UNT) in order to examine the relationship between RMR and level of training. Sixty-one women between the ages of 18 and 46 years volunteered to serve as subjects in this study. Each subject completed measurements of body composition, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), and two consecutive measurements of RMR. The data presented show that there was no significant difference in resting metabolic rate between resistance-trained, aerobically trained, and control subjects. However, when grouped by intensity of training, there was a trend for an increased resting metabolic rate (kcal/day) in the highly trained subjects, regardless of mode of training. Objective: To determine the effect of a 20-week endurance training program in healthy, previously sedentary participants on measures derived from an intravenous glucose tolerance test (i.v.GTT).Research Design and Methods: An i.v.GTT was performed before and after a standardized training program in 316 women and 280 men (173 blacks and 423 whites). Participants exercised on cycle ergometers 3 days per week for 60 sessions. The exercise intensity was progressively increased from 55% VO2max for 30 min per session to 75% VO2max for 50 min per session.Results: Mean insulin sensitivity increased by 10% (P < 0.001) following the intervention, but the variability in the changes was high. Men had larger improvements than women (P = 0.02). Improvements in fasting insulin were transitory, disappearing 72 h after the last bout of exercise. There were also significant mean increases in the glucose disappearance index (3%, P = 0.02) and in glucose effectiveness (11%, P < 0.001), measures of glucose tolerance and of the capacity of glucose to mediate its own disposal, respectively. The acute insulin response to glucose, a measure of insulin secretion, increased by 7% in the quartile with the lowest baseline glucose tolerance and decreased by 14% in the quartile with the highest baseline glucose tolerance (P < 0.001). The glucose area below fasting levels during the i.v.GTT was reduced by 7% (P = 0.02).Conclusions: Although the effects of structured regular exercise were highly variable, there were improvements in virtually all i.v.GTT-derived variables. Clinicians who understand how the body responds to exercise, how aerobic training improves cardiovascular fitness, and the benefits and principles of prescribing aerobic exercise can effectively encourage patients to become active and optimize programs for those already active. Patients who are active at an early age and who continue to enjoy active lifestyles as adults will attenuate the normal losses in cardiovascular endurance, strength, and flexibility that accompany aging and sedentary living, thereby maintaining greater independence throughout their life spans. BACKGROUND: Obesity is a major public health problem in the United States. The role of physical activity and formal exercise in controlling body weight has not been clearly determined. OBJECTIVE: This study determined the magnitude of change in body weight and composition across sex, race, and age in response to 20 wk of endurance training. DESIGN: Men and women (n = 557) of various ages (16-65 y) and 2 races (black and white) exercised on cycle ergometers 3 d/wk for a total of 60 exercise sessions starting at 55% of maximal oxygen consumption (VO(2)max) for 30 min/session and building to 75% of VO(2)max for 50 min/session, where it was maintained during the last 6 wk. Skinfold-thickness measurements, circumferences, body composition (by hydrostatic weighing), and body fat distribution (by computed tomography scan at L4-L5 and the waist-hip ratio) were determined before and after training. RESULTS: All skinfold-thickness and circumference measures, waist-hip ratio, body mass index, total body mass, fat mass, percentage body fat, and computed tomography scan measures of total, subcutaneous, and visceral abdominal fat decreased with training, whereas total body density and fat-free mass increased. These changes were significant, but small. There were several differences in training response by sex and race, but not by age. CONCLUSIONS: A short-term exercise intervention can induce favorable changes in body composition, but the magnitude of these changes is of limited biological significance. This study determined the effects of endurance exercise training on the resting metabolic rate (RMR). It was hypothesized that the RMR would be increased posttraining, but that this increase would reflect the influence of the last exercise bout, not a chronic adaptation to exercise training. Seventy-four subjects (40 men and 37 women) aged 17-63 y participated in a 20-wk endurance training program. RMR and maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) were each measured on 2 separate days both pre- and posttraining; the posttraining RMR measurements were taken 24 and 72 h after the last exercise bout. There were small but significant changes posttraining in relative body fat (-1.0%), fat mass (-0.6 kg), and fat-free mass (0.7 kg) and a 17.9% increase in VO2max. The RMR remained unchanged posttraining, both 24 and 72 h after the last exercise bout, even when the data were adjusted to account for the potential confounding effects of age, sex, body composition, and VO2max. In conclusion, 20 wk of endurance exercise training had no effect on the RMR even in the presence of small changes in body composition and a large increase in VO2max. Oxidant stress and overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. Oxidative modifications of low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are thought to play an early and critical role in atherogenesis. LDL oxidation can be reproduced in vitro, but results usually show a large interindividual variation not entirely explained by the environment. Free radical-induced hemolysis is also proposed to reveal the overall antioxidant capacity. The roles of genetic factors and exercise on the variability of both measures were investigated. The study was conducted in 146 healthy individuals from 28 families participating in a 20-week exercise-training program. In addition to important biological and environmental influences on variation, significant familial aggregation was detected in all oxidation measures. Exercise did not significantly modify the LDL oxidation parameters, but significantly increased resistance was observed in the free radical-induced hemolysis, especially in women, this effect was not observed in smokers. In total, the findings suggest the presence of familial effects in the response to ex vivo oxidation. Further, smoking negates the beneficial effect of exercise training on erythrocyte resistance to free radical-induced hemolysis. These observations emphasize the importance of context in the evaluation of exercise and oxidant stress.
