This article was written in honor of Prof. Bernhard Blumich, who has heavily impacted many areas of Magnetic Resonance and, in particular, low-field and portable NMR with numerous advances, concepts, innovations, and applications of this impressive technology. Many years ago, we decided to research and develop single-sided magnets for the area of petroleum science and engineering to study oil reservoir rocks in the laboratory under well-logging conditions. The global urge to exploit oil reserves requires the analysis of reservoirs, intending to characterize the yields before starting the production. Thus, well-logging tools have been developed to estimate the quality of oil and reservoir productivity. NMR logging is included in these analytical tools, and numerous operations using this kind of device were performed since the early 1950s. To contribute to this vital research area, we show the development of a new benchtop single-sided NMR system, with well-logging tool characteristics, a cylindrical sweet spot with 4 cm of diameter and length, with magnetic field of 47 mT centered at 11 cm from the magnet's surface and a constant gradient of 35.7 G/cm along z. This system was used in self-diffusion, T1-T2, and D-T2 measurements of standard liquids and rock cores, demonstrating its functionality.

Many of the world's oil reservoirs are sandstones and some equations have been widely explored to estimate their permeability from NMR measurements, especially those based on the Schlumberger Doll Research (SDR) and Timur–Coates models. In both cases, the permeability is assumed to be related to pore sizes. Brownstein and Tarr showed that, under fast diffusion regime, the NMR transverse relaxation time is proportional to the pore size and the proportionality constant is defined by the interaction fluid/surface and represented by the surface relaxivity ρ. However, although there are several methods in the literature to estimate ρ, no standard methods have been established so far, to our knowledge. In this work, we estimated surface relaxivity by combining experimental and simulated NMR data using a recently developed computational method to emulate the NMR signal of fluids within Digital Rocks. In addition, we analyzed the correlation between the pore radii and the experimentally measured gas permeability. Comparing Schlumberger and Timur-Coates models for permeability prediction, we propose that the macro and microporosity intensities identified in the T2 distribution are correlated with characteristics of the sandstone surface. Thus, sandstone surface relaxivity can be estimated using the ratio of macro and microporosity intensities from NMR and, consequently, the pore size distribution can be obtained using only T2 distribution data.

This thesis discusses Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques for formation evaluation in well log analysis for the oil/gas industry. We present the standard ingredients for NMR data processing and interpretation, and develop a methodology that extends the determination of surface relaxivity from the laboratory to the well site. The methodology consists of a processing algorithm for diffusion editing data, which enables surface relaxivity determination for conditions close to those found in well logging (regarding data availability and noise levels). At moderate noise levels, lower relaxivity values (below 10μm/s) can be determined solely from NMR diffusion data, while higher values (∼30μm/s) can be separated from intermediate ones. Application for actual logging data still requires some noise reduction techniques such as stationary measurements downhole or data stacking among different depths. However, it provides a way of converting T2 distributions into actual pore size distributions even for downhole acquisitions, before the samples get to the laboratory for routine analysis. Besides the logging analysis, we also developed a theoretical approximation to the diffusion equation with partial absorptive contour conditions, by calculating appropriate transition rates between cells in an arbitrary grid, allowing a simple methodology for obtaining the NMR data based on pore imaging. Calculated rates can in principle be used for modeling/understanding different diffusion phenomena, such as exchange between pores or relaxation sites. Neste trabalho são discutidas técnicas de Ressonância Magnética Nuclear (RMN) aplicadas à avaliação de formações por meio da perfilagem de poços pela indústria de óleo e gás. São apresentados os conceitos básicos para processamento e interpretação dos dados de RMN, e desenvolvida uma metodologia para determinação da relaxatividade superficial em poço. O método consiste em um algoritmo de processamento de dados de diffusion editing, que permite a obtenção da relaxatividade superficial em condições próximas as encontradas na perfilagem de poços de petróleo (em relação à disponibilidade de dados e nível de ruído). Para níveis moderados de ruído, as relaxatividades mais baixas (menores que 10μm/s) podem ser determinadas através das medidas de difusão por RMN, enquanto valores mais altos (∼30μm/s) podem ser separados dos intermediários. Aplicações em dados de perfilagem ainda requerem técnicas de redução de ruído como aquisições estacionárias em poço ou empilhamento de dados ao longo de um intervalo de profundidades. Entretanto, o método possibilita uma forma de converter as distribuições de T2 em distribuições de tamanhos de poros ainda em poço, antes que as amostras sejam enviadas para o laboratório em análises de rotina. Além da perfilagem, foi desenvolvido também uma aproximação para a equação de difusão com condições de contorno absortivas, através de equações de taxas. A forma das taxas de transição permite o desenvolvimento de metodologias simples para obtenção dos dados de RMN através de imagens dos poros das rochas. As taxas de transição podem ser utilizadas também para a modelagem de outros fenômenos que envolvam difusão, como fenômenos de troca entre poros ou entre sítios com diferentes valores de relaxação.

We propose analytical functions for T2 distribution to describe transverse relaxation in high- and low-fields NMR experiments on porous media. The method is based on a superstatistics theory, and allows to find the mean and standard deviation of T2, directly from measurements. It is an alternative to multiexponential models for data decay inversion in NMR experiments. We exemplify the method with q-exponential functions and χ(2)-distributions to describe, respectively, data decay and T2 distribution on high-field experiments of fully water saturated glass microspheres bed packs, sedimentary rocks from outcrop and noisy low-field experiment on rocks. The method is general and can also be applied to biological systems.

Complex pore structure in carbonate rocks causes the petrophysical characterization and formation evaluation a challenge. Permeability is one of the main evaluation parameters for determining the potential production of a reservoir because it defines the ability of fluids to flow through rocks. It is not possible to directly measure permeability using a wireline tool; one method to obtain it, however, is from Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) logs using various models such as Timur-Coates, T2LM (Kenyon) and P-connectivity which are adjusted using laboratory core analysis. Interpretation methods were developed to obtain permeability of the formation from NMR readings. These models relate permeability with other petrophysical properties such as porosity that can be directly estimated using well log information. The NMR models include parameters such as c, m, n and T2,cutoff, that must be calibrated with NMR laboratory analyses because they vary for each formation. In some cases, NMR models must be modified to estimate rock permeability more accurately. This paper presents a workflow to modify the NMR models to determine permeability in carbonate rocks. The correlation between conventional laboratory core analysis and NMR permeability from Timur-Coates and Kenyon models is improved using an adjustment factor applicable for each equation. The adjustment factor can be correlated with petrophysical properties of the rocks such as NMR porosity, the irreducible fluid volume (BVI) and the moveable fluid volume (BVM). The results of calculating NMR permeability in carbonate rocks applying the modified equations to laboratory data and NMR log is also presented. Permeability from formation tests is used to correlate with NMR permeability using log data.

Summary Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) transverse relaxation times (T2) were measured for carbonate rocks saturated with brine and crude oil under different saturation conditions. The NMR measurements were intercalated within the stages of standard wettability core analyses, which monitor imbibition and drainage processes after restoring in situ condition. The T2 distributions are interpreted for seven core plugs in each of the following stages: 1) totally brine saturated; 2) at irreducible water saturation after drainage; 3) restored after „ageing‟ for sixty days; 4) at residual oil saturation after imbibition and; 5) at final water saturation after second drainage. Under these complex saturated rock systems, brine and crude relaxation contributions are highly overlapped. However a practical relaxation-time-domain method is proposed and fluid signals are separated. Guided by T2 monophasic results, closely related to rock pore size distribution, biphasic results reveal pore occupancy and wettability of the micro, meso and macro porosity. Finally, this work reinforces the importance of NMR technique to complement conventional wettability core analysis and its potentiality for in situ wettability measurements in borehole geophysics.

In this paper, the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance response of three sedimentary rocks (one sandstone and two carbonates) is modeled through random walk simulations. With this modeling, we aim to improve micro-porosity content and pore size estimation, by taking into account both surface relaxation and diffusive coupling. Experimental Magnetic Resonance data and microscopic image analysis are used to compare the results. We obtained a good match between simulated and experimental T2 distribution curves. Geometrical parameters used as inputs in the model provide macro- and micro-porosity content as well as pore sizes.

Taking rock and saturation heterogeneity into account is of great importance both in well logging and petrophysical core analysis programs. This work presents some results achieved with novel low field laboratorial nuclear magnetic resonance techniques that can spatially resolve transversal relaxation time (T2) and signal amplitudes along core plugs length. The measurement quality is firstly tested with a mixture of bulk fluids (water and oil) and then performed in sandstone and carbonate rocks under fully and also partially (centrifuged) saturated conditions. These one dimensional rock imaging techniques can efficiently inform about sample pore-size distribution heterogeneities and also monitor in situ rock saturation with important centrifuge capillary pressure implications.

Vários módulos funcionais de células ou bactérias são controlados por meio de genes que se regulam através da codificação de proteínas repressoras ou indutoras. A compreensão destas redes gênicas é um problema em aberto da biologia. Nesta dissertação procuramos aplicar o modelo estocástico de spins e bósons para o caso da rede mais simples, contiduída de dois genes, o primeiro reprimindo o segundo. Apresentamos a solução exata para a distribuição de probabilidades sobre o número das proteínas dos dois genes no estado estacionário, e a probabilidade dependente do tempo sobre o estado do segundo gene (ativado ou desativado). Discutimos também maneiras de generalizar os resultados para redes maiores. Several functional modules in cells or bacteria are controlled by genes that regulate each other by coding repressive or inducer proteins. The understanding of these genetic networks is still an open problem in biology. In this work we apply the stochastic spin-boson model to the simplest interacting network, made of two genes, the first repressing the second. We present the exact solution for the stationary probability distribution over their both protein numbers, and the temporal evolution of the second genes state (on or off). We also discuss ways of generalizing these results to larger networks.

A distribuição de tamanho e conectividade dos poros em rochas reservatório permitem a estimativa de reserva, produtividade e planejamento de produção de petróleo, através de modelos petrofísicos confiáveis. Bandas de deformação, principalmente as cataclásticas, são estruturas marcadas por reorganização e fragmentação dos grãos. No entanto, há ainda poucos estudos que tratam das variações em microescala da porosidade nessas estruturas. Usualmente, somente dados de porosidade ou de permeabilidade em rocha total são reportados na literatura. O principal objetivo deste trabalho é caracterizar a distribuição e orientação dos macro e microporos, considerando os processos diagenéticos e deformacionais que influenciam na porosidade e na permeabilidade da rocha. Para tal foram comparadas as propriedades petrofísicas de arenitos com diferentes quantidades de bandas de deformação, desenvolvidas em afloramentos de duas unidades geológicas distintas: o Grupo Ilhas (depósitos fluvio-deltaicos) e o Grupo Massacará (depósitos fluvio-eólicos) da Bacia do Tucano, nordeste do estado da Bahia. Como principais métodos foram utilizadas a ressonância magnética nuclear (RMN) e a anisotropia de susceptibilidade magnética em amostras impregnadas com ferrofluido (ASMff). Adicionalmente, microscopia óptica e eletrônica, microtomografia computadorizada de raios X (µCT) e ensaios de petrofísica básica (porosidade e permeabilidade a gás; densidade), auxiliaram nas interpretações. Do ponto de vista petrográfico, foram observados poros primários, poros em fraturas e originados por dissolução. As bandas de deformação foram identificadas nos picos intermediários de tempos de relaxação transversal (T2), entre 3 e 50 ms, podendo também ter influência em picos menores. A intensidade desses picos está relacionada principalmente ao volume das bandas, enquanto a largura ou proporção relativa depende da geometria e orientação. Estruturas mais homogêneas apresentaram apenas um pico mais estreito, enquanto estruturas com geometria anastomosada, contendo pods de rocha menos deformada em seu interior, foram associadas a dois picos ou a um pico mais largo. Nesse caso, a intensidade dos picos pode refletir até mesmo diferentes graus de fragmentação granular. Devido à baixa susceptibilidade magnética das amostras e ao fato da distribuição de T2 ter sido medida em baixo campo magnético, não houve indícios de subestimação significativa dos valores de porosidade, em relação a outras técnicas. Também ficou claro que efeitos em T2 decorrentes dos aspectos texturais primários podem ser obliterados pela modificação da estrutura porosa por processos deformacionais. Com isso, a ressonância magnética nuclear se mostrou uma ferramenta eficiente para auxiliar na identificação de bandas de deformação cataclásticas nos arenitos estudados neste trabalho. Contudo, a técnica permitiu apenas uma análise qualitativa do conteúdo de bandas nas amostras. Quanto a orientação dos poros a anisotropia de suscetibilidade magnética por ferrofluido mostrou uma compatibilidade satisfatória, entretanto mais estudos são necessários. The distribution and connectivity of the pore size in reservoir rocks allow estimating the reserve, productivity and oil production planning, through reliable petrophysical models. Deformation bands, especially cataclastic ones, are structures marked by reorganization and grains fragmentation. However, there are still few studies that address the microscale variations in porosity in these structures. Usually, only porosity or permeability data in total rock are reported in the literature. The main objective of this work is to characterize the distribution and orientation of macro and micropores, considering the diagenetic and deformational processes that influence the porosity and permeability of the rock. For this purpose, the petrophysical properties of sandstones with different amounts of deformation bands were compared, developed in outcrops of two distinct geological units: the Ilhas Group (fluvio-deltaic deposits) and the Massacará Group (fluvio-eolic deposits) in the Tucano Basin, northeast of the state of Bahia. The main methods used were nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and magnetic susceptibility anisotropy in samples impregnated with ferrofluid (ASMff). Additionally, optical and electronic microscopy, X-ray computed microtomography (µCT) and basic petrophysics tests (porosity and gas permeability; density), helped with the interpretations. From the petrographic point of view, primary pores, pores in fractures and originated by dissolution were observed. The deformation bands were identified in the intermediate peaks of transverse relaxation times (T2), between 3 and 50 ms, and may also have an influence on smaller peaks. The intensity of these peaks is mainly related to the volume of the bands, while the relative width or proportion depends on the geometry and orientation. More homogeneous structures showed only a narrower peak, while structures with anastomosed geometry, containing pods of less deformed rock inside, were associated with two peaks or with a wider peak. In this case, the intensity of the peaks can reflect even different degrees of granular fragmentation. Due to the low magnetic susceptibility of the samples and the fact that the T2 distribution was measured in a low magnetic field, there was no evidence of significant underestimation of the porosity values, in relation to the other techniques. It was also clear that effects in T2 resulting from the primary textural aspects can be obliterated by the modification of the porous structure by deformational processes. With that, nuclear magnetic resonance proved to be an efficient tool to assist in the identification of cataclastic deformation bands in the sandstones studied in this work. However, the technique allowed only a qualitative analysis of the band content in the samples. As for the orientation of the pores, the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility by ferrofluid showed a satisfactory compatibility, however more studies are needed.

Convencionalmente, a caracterização das principais propriedades físicas de rochas reservatórios é realizada a partir de análises petrofísicas utilizando-se amostras extraídas dos testemunhos (ou de afloramentos de análogos de reservatórios) e da análise microscópica das lâminas delgadas. Estas determinações petrográficas e petrofísicas convencionais visam determinar principalmente a porosidade e permeabilidade das rochas reservatório. Entretanto as etapas de obtenção e preparação das amostras consomem um tempo considerável, além de apresentar custos relativamente elevados. A porosidade como resultado da superposição de diversos processos (deposicionais e diagenéticos) ao longo do tempo sempre apresenta uma geometria complexa. Muitos dos processos que formam a porosidade, tais como seleção de grãos, compactação e microfraturamento, tem um componente direcional intrínseco que gera anisotropia do espaço poroso. O presente projeto propôs a avaliação e o emprego de uma técnica para determinar a porosidade e sua anisotropia utilizando medidas de susceptibilidade magnética em rochas impregnadas por nanopartículas superparamagnéticas (NPMag). Foram testados solventes e concentrações diferentes para solubilização das NPMags (ferrofluído), bem como métodos de impregnação distintos. Através dos resultados comparativos entre a porosidade determinada através da aplicação das nanopartículas e a forma clássica de determinação petrofísica (utilizando gás hélio) foi possível observar que as partículas têm capacidade de impregnação inclusive de espaços porosos menores, como microporosidade e gargantas de poros. A determinação da porosidade a partir de impregnações com NPMags solubilizadas em THF mostraram ótima correlação com a forma clássica de determinação de porosidade por gás hélio, com grau de confiabilidade de 95%. Após a confirmação da eficácia da técnica empregada para completa saturação do espaço poroso, o método foi aplicado como auxiliar na caracterização petrofísica das amostras de dois afloramentos das formações Ipú e Jaicós do Grupo Serra Grande (Bacia do Parnaíba). A caracterização dos afloramentos contou também com a realização de análise petrográfica com confecção e avaliação e de 48 lâminas delgadas. As porosidades determinadas para Formação Ipú variaram entre 3% e 27% pela análise de imagem a partir de lâmina delgada e entre 18% e 31% pela determinação através da impregnação de ferrofluído. Através da diferença entre os métodos pôde-se estimar que em algumas fácies a microporosidade pode corresponder a até 75% da porosidade total calculada pelo método de impregnação por ferrofluído. As porosidades determinadas para Formação Jaicós variaram entre 10% e 23% (análise de imagem) e 14% e 23% (impregnação por ferrofluído). A melhor correlação entre as duas técnicas reflete a menor quantidade de microporosidade nestas amostras. As medições de ASM pós impregnação nas amostras das Formações Ipú e Jaicós indicaram uma anisotropia de porosidade abaixo de 0,5%. As análises realizadas nas amostras da Formação Jaicós apresentaram Kmax (eixo máximo do elipsoide de Anisotropia de Susceptibilidade Magnética) preferencialmente horizontais (
