Scholars are charged with knowledge advancement by conducting relevant research. Academic researchers rely on the peer-review journal system to evaluate the quality and relevancy of their work. Despite its value, the current review system is flawed and sometimes results in fragmented knowledge formation. Some scholars, including Kouzes and Posner (K&P), publish research in books more accessible to practitioners. The impact of foregoing the traditional journal publication process on current knowledge is unclear. To explore this question, we used leadership scholarship as a case study and examined how K&P's leader credibility conceptualization, primarily shared in practitioner-focused books, was integrated into peer-review literature knowledge. More specifically, we compared K&P's definition with the conceptual definition which emerged from a comprehensive review of leader credibility definitions contained in peer-reviewed literature. We discuss the advantages of different pathways to relevancy and identify ways to achieve better collective knowledge by using these different pathways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dynamic capabilities enable businesses to build a sustainable competitive advantage (Teece, 2007). This study investigates whether supply chain sensing (SCS) and supply chain agility (SCA) form a dynamic sensing and agility capability (DSAC) that enhances firm performance. Most empirical research on dynamic capabilities examines large organizations; this study investigates dynamic capabilities in small to medium enterprises (SMEs). SMEs form a significant part of the world economy and often have limited resources compared to large organizations. We utilize a survey of 139 respondents from SMEs in a single industry - the printing industry. Our analysis, both an EFA and PLS-SEM, find that SCS and SCA are different constructs that combine to form a dynamic sensing and agility capability. We found that this dynamic sensing and agility capability positively affects firm performance but not supply chain impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To study how religiosity affects family business goals, we merge literatures on goal setting, temporal orientation, and family business to argue that family business goals can be distinguished into short-term and long-term orientations and propose that religiosity affects both orientations, but to varying degrees. Drawing on a sample of private U.S. family businesses and applying partial least squares structural equations modeling, we find tentative support that religiosity has a stronger positive effect on long-term goal orientation than on short-term goal orientation. Leaders of small firms often lack support staff to whom they can delegate managerial tasks. Related to the small business management paradigm, these leaders need insight into what management practices to employ as they simultaneously balance operations, administration, and human resource duties. Strategic planning has been the focus of much scholarly attention. However, the effect of strategic planning on small business performance is unclear. We attempt to provide clarity by establishing a higher-order component construct, comprehensive strategic approach, which includes three related management practices: goal setting, strategic planning, and financial ratio analysis. Goals are a key differentiator between family businesses and non-family businesses. To improve understanding of this topic, the authors take stock of what they know about goals in family business. They synthesize prior research findings and classify the research into five categories: family business goal antecedents; goal characteristics; goal-related outcomes; moderators of goal outcomes; and feedback loop.
