Abstract

The electricity grid has evolved from a physical system to a cyber-physical system with digital devices that perform measurement, control, communication, computation, and actuation. The increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs) that include renewable generation, flexible loads, and storage provides extraordinary opportunities for improvements in efficiency and sustainability. However, they can introduce new vulnerabilities in the form of cyberattacks, which can cause significant challenges in ensuring grid resilience. %, i.e. the ability to rapidly restore grid services in the face of severe disruptions. We propose a framework in this paper for achieving grid resilience through suitably coordinated assets including a network of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. A local electricity market is proposed to identify trustable assets and carry out this coordination. Situational Awareness (SA) of locally available DERs with the ability to inject power or reduce consumption is enabled by the market, together with a monitoring procedure for their trustability and commitment. With this SA, we show that a variety of cyberattacks can be mitigated using local trustable resources without stressing the bulk grid. Abstract

Conformal phased arrays provide multiple degrees of freedom to the scan angle, which is typically limited by antenna aperture in rigid arrays. Silicon-based RF signal processing offers reliable, reconfigurable, multi-functional, and compact control for conformal phased arrays that can be used for on-the-move communication. While the lightweight, compactness, and shape-changing properties of the conformal phased arrays are attractive, these features result in dynamic deformation of the array during motion leading to significant dynamic beam pointing errors. We propose a silicon-based, compact, reconfigurable solution to self-correct these dynamic deformation-induced beam pointing errors. Furthermore, additive printing is leveraged to enhance the flexibility of the conformal phased arrays, as the printed conductive ink is more flexible than bulk copper and can be easily deposited on flexible sheets using different printing tools, providing an environmentally-friendly solution for large-scale production. The inks such as conventional silver inks are expensive and copper-based printable inks suffer from spontaneous metal oxidation that alters trace impedance and degrades beamforming performance. This work uses a low-cost molecular copper decomposition ink with reliable RF properties at different temperature and strain to print the proposed intelligent conformal phased array operating at 2.1 GHz. Proof-of-concept prototype $2\times2$ array self-corrects the deformation induces beampointing error with an error $<1.25^\circ$. The silicon based array processing part occupying only 2.58 mm$^2$ area and 83 mW power per tile.

Abstract

While regular physical activity is a cornerstone of health, wellness, and vitality, the impact of endurance exercise training on molecular signaling within and across tissues remains to be delineated. The Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) was established to characterize molecular networks underlying the adaptive response to exercise. Here, we describe the endurance exercise training studies undertaken by the Preclinical Animal Sites Studies component of MoTrPAC, in which we sought to develop and implement a standardized endurance exercise protocol in a large cohort of rats. To this end, Adult (6-mo) and Aged (18-mo) female (n = 151) and male (n = 143) Fischer 344 rats were subjected to progressive treadmill training (5 d/wk, ∼70%-75% VO2max) for 1, 2, 4, or 8 wk; sedentary rats were studied as the control group. A total of 18 solid tissues, as well as blood, plasma, and feces, were collected to establish a publicly accessible biorepository and for extensive omics-based analyses by MoTrPAC. Treadmill training was highly effective, with robust improvements in skeletal muscle citrate synthase activity in as little as 1-2 wk and improvements in maximum run speed and maximal oxygen uptake by 4-8 wk. For body mass and composition, notable age- and sex-dependent responses were observed. This work in mature, treadmill-trained rats represents the most comprehensive and publicly accessible tissue biorepository, to date, and provides an unprecedented resource for studying temporal-, sex-, and age-specific responses to endurance exercise training in a preclinical rat model.

Abstract

Regular exercise promotes whole-body health and prevents disease, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are incompletely understood1-3. Here, the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium4 profiled the temporal transcriptome, proteome, metabolome, lipidome, phosphoproteome, acetylproteome, ubiquitylproteome, epigenome and immunome in whole blood, plasma and 18 solid tissues in male and female Rattus norvegicus over eight weeks of endurance exercise training. The resulting data compendium encompasses 9,466 assays across 19 tissues, 25 molecular platforms and 4 training time points. Thousands of shared and tissue-specific molecular alterations were identified, with sex differences found in multiple tissues. Temporal multi-omic and multi-tissue analyses revealed expansive biological insights into the adaptive responses to endurance training, including widespread regulation of immune, metabolic, stress response and mitochondrial pathways. Many changes were relevant to human health, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, cardiovascular health and tissue injury and recovery. The data and analyses presented in this study will serve as valuable resources for understanding and exploring the multi-tissue molecular effects of endurance training and are provided in a public repository ( https://motrpac-data.org/ ).

10. Factors influencing healthcare workers and health system preparedness for the COVID-19 pandemic: A qualitative study in Ghana.

Abstract

Adequate preparedness of health systems, particularly healthcare workers (HCWs), to respond to COVID-19 is critical for the effective control of the virus, especially in low- and middle-income countries where health systems are overburdened. We examined Ghanaian HCWs perceived preparedness to respond to the pandemic and the factors that shaped their preparedness and that of the health system. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were conducted with n = 26 HCWs responsible for the clinical management of COVID-19 patients and three administrators responsible for developing and implementing COVID-19 policies at the facility level. Interviews were conducted over the phone in English, transcribed, and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Generally, HCWs felt inadequately prepared to contain the spread of COVID-19 due to resource shortages and inadequate training. HCWs, similarly, perceived the health system to be unprepared due to insufficient clinical infrastructure and logistical challenges. The few who felt prepared identified readiness in managing high consequence infectious disease cases and pre-existing protocols as enablers of HCW preparedness. The health system and HCWs were unprepared to manage the COVID-19 pandemic due to inadequate training, logistical challenges, and weak clinical infrastructure. Interventions are urgently needed to improve the health systems preparedness for future pandemics.

14. Education for Integration: Dental hygiene student and family medicine residents

Abstract

Purpose The integration of oral health and primary care offers promising solutions to overcome barriers hindering patient access to oral health care. However, primary care providers require training in basic preventive oral health care and information regarding interprofessional practice opportunities. The purpose of this feasibility study was to examine the perspective of families, learners, faculty and administrators who engaged in an interprofessional training experience for family medicine residents and dental hygiene students. Methods Family medicine residents and dental hygiene students participated in an interprofessional oral health integration training experience, which included didactic, preclinical, and clinical components. The clinical experience was conducted during a Medicaid Managed Care clinic session, which included the participation of children who had not undergone a well-child visit within the past year. The care teams were comprised of a family medicine resident and dental hygiene student, who collaborated on the provision of preventive oral health care services, including oral examinations, preventive interventions, patient education, and care coordination. Qualitative data gathered using field notes, focus groups, and key informant interviews were analyzed to identify themes from care team, patient/family, and administrative perspectives. Results The care teams provided preventive health oral health care services to 10 pediatric patients during their well child visit. Patients and family members reported appreciating the convenience and value of the care provided. The experience was well received by family medicine residents, dental hygiene students, and clinical faculty members, who highlighted the value of the experience in expanding access to care. The family medicine residents reported the training and interprofessional practice opportunity to be highly valuable, reporting better preparation for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of oral conditions that they may have otherwise overlooked or misdiagnosed. Conclusions This interprofessional educational experience demonstrates the potential value of integrating preventive oral health in primary care visits for children. This care integration may be especially helpful for populations that experience barriers to oral health care. Results of this study suggest that expanding interprofessional education between dental hygiene programs and family medicine residencies may be beneficial for preparing the future workforce for integrated care. Additional research is needed to formalize training models that support integration and promote interprofessional collaboration and practice. We propose a new regularization scheme for the optimization of deep learning architectures, G-TRACER ("Geometric TRACE Ratio"), which promotes generalization by seeking flat minima, and has a sound theoretical basis as an approximation to a natural-gradient descent based optimization of a generalized Bayes objective. By augmenting the loss function with a TRACER, curvature-regularized optimizers (eg SGD-TRACER and Adam-TRACER) are simple to implement as modifications to existing optimizers and don't require extensive tuning. 24. Teachers' Psychological Distress in North Carolina: An Analysis of Urban versus Non-Urban School Districts

Abstract

Teachers experience a great deal of psychological distress. However, there is a gap in the literature concerning the difference between the distress of teachers working in urban schools versus those in non-urban schools. Thus, the present study utilizes data from the 2018 North Carolina Teacher Working Conditions Survey to conduct a statistical analysis of the agreeability differences between urban and non-urban teachers' responses to constructs with implications for their psychological well-being. The results reveal some differences between urban teachers and non-urban teachers. Suggestions are offered to key stakeholders to better support the psychological well-being of teachers.

School discipline disparities for African American students in urban schools continue to be a topic of contention. While research has rightfully called into question the practices and preparation of teachers and principals, the role that assistant principals serve as disciplinary gatekeepers has gone relatively unnoticed in the literature. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of five assistant principals at two urban middle schools to ascertain how they addressed issues of race amid applying school discipline interventions for African American students. The findings are analyzed and discussed through a critical race theoretical framework.

26. Implicit Learning in Production: Productive Generalization of New Form-Meaning Connections in the Absence of Awareness

Abstract

Second language implicit learning research has shown that a variety of linguistic features can be acquired without awareness. However, this research overwhelmingly uses comprehension tests to measure implicit learning. It remains unclear whether newly acquired implicit knowledge can also be recruited for production. To address this question, we developed a novel paradigm based on elicited recall and false memory that was used to both train participants and test their implicit knowledge in production, including generating new instances of the rule. Participants learned a semiartificial language containing a rule based on one in a natural language (the alternation between Czech spatial prepositions v and na). Participants who remained unaware of the rule, as assessed by verbal report, nevertheless were able to use it in a production test involving novel items, while believing that they were performing a cued recall test. Even without extensive training, newly acquired implicit knowledge can immediately be evident in production.

28. The Redesign of a Master's Course for Technology Teacher Students to Better Foster Research-Inquiry Attitudes

Abstract

In this article, we document a framework for developing recommendations to improve a master's course for technology student teachers to better foster research-inquiry attitudes. A French case study of seven years of the master's teacher education course is analysed. The study adopted a three-phase educational design research model: analysis and exploration, design and construction, and evaluation and reflection. The data consists of 54 master theses (2014-2021), the degree coursework documentation, and teacher-educators notes. In the end, a discussion is proposed on the practices implemented in the teacher education master's degree course oriented to research-inquiry attitude and recommendations for potential enhancements to technology teacher education.

Reformulating the history matching problem from a least-square mathematical optimization problem into a Markov Decision Process introduces a method in which reinforcement learning can be utilized to solve the problem. This method provides a mechanism where an artificial deep neural network agent can interact with the reservoir simulator and find multiple different solutions to the problem. Such formulation allows for solving the problem in parallel by launching multiple concurrent environments enabling the agent to learn simultaneously from all the environments at once, achieving significant speed up.

34. A Gap in Culturally Responsive Classroom Management Coverage? A Critical Policy Analysis of States' School Discipline Policies

Abstract

A signature item that beleaguers most teachers is classroom management. Recognizing the futility of punitive classroom management within school discipline practices, Weinstein and colleagues forged culturally responsive classroom management (CRCM). While nearly 20 years of scholarship highlights the importance of teachers employing CRCM to reduce their reliance on punitive discipline approaches, which are disproportionally skewed against students of color, there exists a gap between educational research and educational policies concerning the use of CRCM in schools. We employed a critical policy analysis to determine the existence of CRCM in student code-of-conduct policies, across all 50 states. Our findings highlight an absence of CRCM in states' policies, and limited support for the incorporation of CRCM in schools and school districts. Ultimately, an opportunity awaits stakeholders (teachers, school districts, education preparation programs, and policymakers) to reform educational policies and the tools teachers can employ to affirm and sustain students' learning environments.

Prescribed fire is an important management tool for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems and mitigating the risk of high-severity wildfire in the North American Mediterranean climate zone (NAMCZ), much of which was historically characterized by frequent low- to moderate-severity fire. For over a century, policies that excluded fire, curtailed Indigenous cultural burning, and prioritized timber harvesting have, in combination with anthropogenic climate warming, driven large-scale, high-severity fires that are wreaking ecological and socioeconomic havoc. Despite its recognized need, the use of prescribed fire at appropriate scale has been slow to occur. We describe some of the principal obstacles to increasing the application of prescribed fire in the NAMCZ and suggest four strategies for policy makers and high-level managers to overcome them: (1) redoubling federal and state agency commitment and rewarding assertive leadership, (2) increasing funding for prevention-focused management (as opposed to suppression), (3) building capacity through cooperation, and (4) expanding monitoring to inform burn strategies and adaptive management.

36. Training-Induced Linguistic Relativity and Embodied Processing

Abstract

Current theories suggest that linguistic relativity and language embodiment are two sides of the same coin and that language embodiment and “linguistic shortcut” are two alternative types of semantic processing. It can therefore be deduced that deep embodied simulation of linguistic labels may facilitate the corresponding linguistic relativity effect more than shallow linguistic-shortcut processing does. However, this theoretical deduction has not been tested empirically. Here, participants used two newly-trained labels of verb (in)transitivity in sentence contexts that were either simulated in a deep, embodied manner (visual imagery group) or processed via shallow linguistic-shortcut (linguistic associate group). Subsequently, the former group were more likely to categorize motion events based on motion transitivity than the latter group. We thus expanded the moderators of linguistic relativity to the types of semantic access. The findings are discussed in light of the relativist, the universalist, and the sociocultural view on language-cognition relationship.

44. A Figurational Perspective on the Influence of the Sport Education Model in Australia

Abstract

This paper overviews the influence of Daryl Siedentop on Australian physical education research. The Sport Education in Physical Education Project (SEPEP) project provides the backdrop to explore the re-contextualization and development of the sport-based physical education in Australia. The SEM emphasizing developing movement competency as one of its three educational objectives provided a context for game-based approaches. In Australia, this led to new relationships between the SEM and game-based pedagogies being explored and expressed in hybrid developments. Figurational sociology is used to provide unique insight into the strong influence of Siedentop's work on Australian physical education and to consider prospects for sustained influence.

45. Is the Employment of School Resource Officers in High Schools Associated with Black Girls' Discipline Outcomes?

Abstract

In recent years, the media has highlighted the disrespectful and sometimes violent manner in which SROs respond to Black girls' behaviors. Few studies question how SROs in schools might influence traditional school discipline outcomes such as suspensions for a double minoritized group (race and gender) such as Black girls. Leaning on the Black feminist framework of Intersectionality and QuantCrit and using the most recent data from the Office of Civil Rights (2017-2018) the present study examined if there was an association between a SRO's employment in a school and Black girls' risk of receiving an in-school or out-of-school suspension. The findings indicate that for Black girls, their exposure to an SRO was greatest at urban schools and schools with a racially/ethnically diverse student demographic, and the presence of an SRO was associated with an increase in out-of-school and in-school suspensions for Black girls.

46. Exploring the 'Everyday Philosophies' of Generalist Primary School Teacher Delivery of Health Literacy Education

Abstract

The enactment of the Australian Curriculum for Health and Physical Education (AC:HPE) is intended to be informed by five 'propositions' or Key Ideas, one of which is 'Develop Health Literacy'. Our study occurred at four Tasmanian primary schools and was conducted by a research team consisting of public health and education academics. This team composition reflects the nature of the HealthLit4Kids program as a university and community grant-funded study intervention. We examined inter-dependent networks, of teachers and children, to investigate Health Literacy (HL) teaching. Data were collected from 30 primary teacher participants and figurational sociology was our theoretical framework. While our program increased teacher awareness about health education, participants demonstrated limited HL knowledge with their teaching largely informed by 'everyday philosophies'. While increasing health awareness is a welcome first step with the potential to broadly influence students' adult behaviours, the teachers' ideas about HL were largely fantastical. This finding was supported by a latent data theme showing a restricted connection between teacher HL knowledge and the AC:HPE.

47. Global Initiatives in North Carolina: The Impact on Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Learners

Abstract

In 2013, the North Carolina state Task Force on Global Education put forth a goal of preparing students to be globally prepared for the twenty-first century. This study explored, through interviews with officials from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) as well as NCDPI's website, the influence of that global initiative on dual language (DL) programs and the Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL) in the state through the lens of culturally and linguistically diverse learners' (CLD) involvement. For other states seeking ways in which to increase DL programming and the number of students earning the SoBL while simultaneously ensuring the inclusion of CLD learners, this article illuminates ways in which NC is working.
