Abstract

We have re-examined critical experiments on collision induced rotational transfer (RT) and conclude that the probability of RT is controlled by the factors that control the probability of angular momentum (AM) change. The probability of energy change seems less important in this respect. In the light of this we suggest a model for RT in which the probability of AM change is calculated directly and present a formalism for this purpose. We demonstrate that such a calculation leads to an exponential-like fall of RT probabilities with transferred AM, a consequence of the radial dependence of the repulsive part of the intermolecular potential. Thus in this AM model, the exponential gap law has a simple physical origin. The AM model we describe may be used as the basis of an inversion routine through which it is possible to convert RT data into a probability density of the repulsive anisotropy. Through this model therefore it is possible to relate experimental RT data directly to the forces that are responsible for rotational transfer. The hard ellipse model is used in this work to relate calculated anisotropies to a form that includes an isotropic component. The result is a representation of the intermolecular potential through which new insights into the RT process are gained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In the framework of a constructionist approach, a life-course point of view, and traditional concepts borrowed from identity theory, the authors report on a study of fifty-six San Francisco bisexuals. The data show that by midlife, changing life commitments among the participants were associated with a decrease in sexual involvement, a move toward sexual activity with just one sex, a decrease in contact with the bisexual subculture, and a decrease in the salience of a bisexual identity. Given these changes, the data reveal the opposite of what might be expected--an increase rather than a decrease in the certainty about and stability of the bisexual identity. The authors show that this was due to the continuation of dual attractions that were positively regarded even as there was a move away from a bisexual lifestyle. In explaining these findings, they discuss the interplay between sexual communities, relationships, selves, and sexuality.

Abstract

This paper examines what Inglis (2000) refers to as the ?faecal habitus??that set of cultural dispositions that interprets and organizes the bodily elimination of fecal matter. Researching 172 university students, we show how aspects of the social context as ?embodied? (Turner 2000) in four groups of participants (heterosexual women and men and non-heterosexual women and men) mediate the operation of the habitus. The study finds that the heterosexual men distance themselves further from the habitus than each of the other groups. It provides some evidence that the non-heterosexual women also differ from the heterosexual women in this regard. The fecal habitus is shown to have force through the efforts participants make to honor its dispositions and emotionally shield themselves from abjection by attempting to control the assault on the senses that feces can provide. Contributions to the sociology of the body and the sociology of emotions are made by empirically demonstrating how even the most private experiences of corporeality and abjection are socially mediated.
