BackgroundChronic conditions account for 75% of health care costs, and the impact of chronic illness is expected to grow over time. Although subjective well-being predicts better health outcomes, people with chronic conditions tend to report lower well-being. Improving well-being might mitigate costs associated with chronic illness; however, existing interventions can be difficult to access and draw from a single theoretical approach. Happify, a digital well-being intervention program drawing from multiple theoretical traditions to target well-being, has already been established as an efficacious means of improving well-being in both distressed and nondistressed users. ObjectiveThis study aimed to compare change in well-being over time after using Happify for users with and without a chronic condition. MethodsData were obtained from Happify users, a publicly available digital well-being program accessible via website or mobile phone app. Users work on tracks addressing a specific issue (eg, conquering negative thoughts) composed of games and activities based on positive psychology, cognitive behavioral therapy, and mindfulness principles. The sample included 821 users receiving at least 6 weeks’ exposure to Happify (ranging from 42 to 179 days) who met other inclusion criteria. As part of a baseline questionnaire, respondents reported demographic information (age and gender) and whether they had any of the prespecified chronic conditions: arthritis, diabetes, insomnia, multiple sclerosis, chronic pain, psoriasis, eczema, or some other condition (450 reported a chronic condition, whereas 371 did not). Subjective well-being was assessed with the Happify Scale, a 9-item measure of positive emotionality and life satisfaction. To evaluate changes in well-being over time, a mixed effects linear regression model was fit for subjective well-being, controlling for demographics and platform usage. ResultsAt baseline, users with a chronic condition had significantly lower subjective well-being (mean 38.34, SD 17.40) than users without a chronic condition (mean 43.65, SD 19.13). However, change trajectories for users with or without a chronic condition were not significantly different; both groups experienced equivalent improvements in well-being. BackgroundSmartphones are often vilified for negatively influencing well-being and contributing to stress. However, these devices may, in fact, be useful in times of stress and, in particular, aid in stress recovery. Mobile apps that deliver evidence-based techniques for stress reduction, such as heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) training, hold promise as convenient, accessible, and effective stress-reducing tools. Numerous mobile health apps that may potentially aid in stress recovery are available, but very few have demonstrated that they can influence health-related physiological stress parameters (eg, salivary biomarkers of stress). The ability to recover swiftly from stress and reduce physiological arousal is particularly important for long-term health, and thus, it is imperative that evidence is provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of stress-reducing mobile health apps in this context. ObjectiveThe purpose of this research was to investigate the physiological and psychological effects of using a smartphone app for HRVB training following a stressful experience. The efficacy of the gamified Breather component of the Happify mobile health app was examined in an experimental setting. MethodsIn this study, participants (N=140) underwent a laboratory stressor and were randomly assigned to recover in one of three ways: with no phone present, with a phone present, with the HRBV game. Those in the no phone condition had no access to their phone. Those in the phone present condition had their phone but did not use it. Those in the HRVB game condition used the serious game Breather on the Happify app. Stress recovery was assessed via repeated measures of salivary alpha amylase, cortisol, and self-reported acute stress (on a 1-100 scale). ResultsParticipants in the HRVB game condition had significantly lower levels of salivary alpha amylase during recovery than participants in the other conditions (F2,133=3.78, P=.03). There were no significant differences among the conditions during recovery for salivary cortisol levels or self-reported stress. ConclusionsThese results show that engaging in a brief HRVB training session on a smartphone reduces levels of salivary alpha amylase following a stressful experience, providing preliminary evidence for the effectiveness of Breather in improving physiological stress recovery. Given the known ties between stress recovery and future well-being, this study provides a possible mechanism by which gamified biofeedback apps may lead to better health.

Objective: To characterize the heterogeneity in response to lifestyle intervention among Latino adolescents with obesity. Methods: We conducted secondary data analysis of 90 Latino adolescents (age 15.4 ± 0.9 y, female 56.7%) with obesity (BMI% 98.1 ± 1.5%) that were enrolled in a 3 month lifestyle intervention and were followed for a year. Covariance pattern mixture models identified response phenotypes defined by changes in insulin sensitivity as measured using a 2 hour oral glucose tolerance test. Baseline characteristics were compared across response phenotypes using one-way ANOVA and chi-square test. Results: Three distinct response phenotypes (PH1, PH2, PH3) were identified. PH1 exhibited the most robust response defined by the greatest increase in insulin sensitivity over time ([beta] ± SE, linear 0.52 ± 0.17, P < 0.001; quadratic -0.03 ± 0.01, P = 0.001). PH2 showed non-significant changes, while PH3 demonstrated modest short-term increases in insulin sensitivity which were not sustained over time (linear 0.08 ± 0.03, P = 0.002; quadratic -0.01 ± 0.002, P = 0.003). At baseline, PH3 (1.1 ± 0.4) was the most insulin resistant phenotype and exhibited the highest BMI% (98.5 ± 1.1%), 2 hours glucose concentrations (144.0 ± 27.5 mg/dL), and lowest beta-cell function as estimated by the oral disposition index (4.5 ± 2.8). Conclusion: Response to lifestyle intervention varies among Latino youth with obesity and suggests that precision approaches are warranted to meet the prevention needs of high risk youth.

As children get older, they become better able to discriminate between impossible and improbable statements and they realize that improbable events can occur in reality while impossible ones cannot. However, when children hear about extraordinary events from fictional entities (e.g., popular characters from children's media), they may be more likely to doubt that the events can occur in reality. The current studies examine how an informant's reality status and familiarity influence children's belief in statements about improbable and impossible events. Across two studies, children ages 4, 6, and 8 (N = 362) heard impossible and improbable statements from an unfamiliar person, a familiar character, or an unfamiliar character (Study 1) or a real or pretend person (Study 2) and judged whether each statement could happen in reality. As in previous studies, older children were more likely than younger children to believe improbable events could occur. Additionally, for both types of statements, children's judgments about the possibility of the events were similar regardless of the informant. These results suggest that when children hear extraordinary statements described by fictional characters, they pay more attention to the content of the statement than to the source.

Diet and host phylogeny drive the taxonomic and functional contents of the gut microbiome in mammals, yet it is unknown whether these patterns hold across all vertebrate lineages. Here, we assessed gut microbiomes from ∼900 vertebrate species, including 315 mammals and 491 birds, assessing contributions of diet, phylogeny, and physiology to structuring gut microbiomes. In most nonflying mammals, strong correlations exist between microbial community similarity, host diet, and host phylogenetic distance up to the host order level. In birds, by contrast, gut microbiomes are only very weakly correlated to diet or host phylogeny. Furthermore, while most microbes resident in mammalian guts are present in only a restricted taxonomic range of hosts, most microbes recovered from birds show little evidence of host specificity. Notably, among the mammals, bats host especially bird-like gut microbiomes, with little evidence for correlation to host diet or phylogeny. This suggests that host-gut microbiome phylosymbiosis depends on factors convergently absent in birds and bats, potentially associated with physiological adaptations to flight. Our findings expose major variations in the behavior of these important symbioses in endothermic vertebrates and may signal fundamental evolutionary shifts in the cost/benefit framework of the gut microbiome.IMPORTANCE In this comprehensive survey of microbiomes of >900 species, including 315 mammals and 491 birds, we find a striking convergence of the microbiomes of birds and animals that fly. In nonflying mammals, diet and short-term evolutionary relatedness drive the microbiome, and many microbial species are specific to a particular kind of mammal, but flying mammals and birds break this pattern with many microbes shared across different species, with little correlation either with diet or with relatedness of the hosts. This finding suggests that adaptation to flight breaks long-held relationships between hosts and their microbes.

Efforts have been made to promote children's interest in science, but little is known about how children's interest in science relates to other characteristics, such as science-specific curiosity, domain-general epistemic curiosity, and verbal intelligence. The current study examines how these factors relate to individual differences in children's self-reported interest in science topics. Children 7- to 10-years-old (n = 91) rated their interest in science and non-science topics and completed measures of science-specific curiosity, domain-general epistemic curiosity, and verbal intelligence. An additional 94 7- to 10-year-olds rated their interest in science and non-science topics and completed the science-specific curiosity measure. The results suggest that individual differences in children's science interest relate most strongly to scientific curiosity, and specifically to the drive to seek out information and new experiences.

Cardiac metabolism ensures a continuous ATP supply, primarily using fatty acids in a healthy state and favoring glucose in pathological conditions. Pyruvate kinase muscle (PKM) controls the final step of glycolysis, with PKM1 being the main isoform in the heart. PKM2, elevated in various heart diseases, has been suggested to play a protective role in cardiac stress, but its function in basal cardiac metabolism remains unclear. We examined hearts from global PKM2 knockout (PKM2−/−) mice and found reduced intracellular glucose. Isotopic tracing of U‐13C glucose revealed a shift to biosynthetic pathways in PKM2−/− cardiomyocytes. Total ATP content was two‐thirds lower in PKM2−/− hearts, and functional analysis indicated reduced mitochondrial oxygen consumption. Total reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitochondrial superoxide were also increased in PKM2−/− cardiomyocytes. Intriguingly, PKM2−/− hearts had preserved ejection fraction compared to controls. Mechanistically, increased calcium/calmodulin‐dependent kinase II activity and phospholamban phosphorylation may contribute to higher sarcoendoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase 2 pump activity in PKM2−/− hearts. Loss of PKM2 led to altered glucose metabolism, diminished mitochondrial function, and increased ROS in cardiomyocytes. These data suggest that cardiac PKM2 acts as an important rheostat to maintain ATP levels while limiting oxidative stress. Although loss of PKM2 did not impair baseline contractility, its absence may make hearts more sensitive to environmental stress or injury. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
