In this multi-messenger astronomy era, all the observational probes are improving their sensitivities and overall performance. The Focusing on Relativistic universe and Cosmic Evolution (FORCE) mission, the product of a JAXA/NASA collaboration, will reach a 10 times higher sensitivity in the hard X-ray band ($E >$ 10~keV) in comparison with any previous hard X-ray missions, and provide simultaneous soft X-ray coverage. FORCE aims to be launched in the early 2030s, providing a perfect hard X-ray complement to the ESA flagship mission Athena. FORCE will be the most powerful X-ray probe for discovering obscured/hidden black holes and studying high energy particle acceleration in our Universe and will address how relativistic processes in the universe are realized and how these affect cosmic evolution. FORCE, which will operate over 1--79 keV, is equipped with two identical pairs of supermirrors and wideband X-ray imagers. The mirror and imager are connected by a high mechanical stiffness extensible optical bench with alignment monitor systems with a focal length of 12~m. SS433 is the only Galactic binary system known to persistently accrete at highly super-critical (or hyper-critical) rates, similar to those in tidal disruption events, and likely needed to explain the rapid growth of those very high redshift quasars containing massive SMBHs. Probing the inner regions of SS433 in the X-rays is crucial to understanding this system, and super-critical accretion in general, but is highly challenging due to obscuration by the surrounding wind, driven from the accretion flow. NuSTAR observed SS433 in the hard X-ray band across multiple phases of its 162 day super-orbital precession period. Spectral-timing tools allow us to infer that the hard X-ray emission from the inner regions is likely being scattered towards us by the walls of the wind-cone. By comparing to numerical models, we determine an intrinsic X-ray luminosity of $\ge$ 2$\times$10$^{37}$ erg/s and that, if viewed face on, we would infer an apparent luminosity of $>$ 1$\times$10$^{39}$ erg/s, confirming SS433's long-suspected nature as an ultraluminous X-ray source (ULX). We present the discovery of a narrow, $\sim 100$s lag due to atomic processes occurring in outflowing material travelling at least 0.14-0.29c, which matches absorption lines seen in ULXs and -- in the future -- will allow us to map a super-critical outflow for the first time., 14 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We describe an implementation of a broad-band soft X-ray polarimeter, substantially based on previous designs. The Globe-Orbiting Soft X-ray Polarimeter (GOSoX) is a SmallSat. As in a related mission concept the PiSoX Polarimeter, the grating arrangement is designed optimally for the purpose of polarimetry matching the dispersion of a spectrometer to a laterally graded multilayer (LGML). For GOSoX, the optics are lightweight Si mirrors in a one-bounce parabolic configuration. The instrument covers the wavelength range from 31 A to 75 A (165 - 400 eV). Upon satellite rotation, the intensities of the dispersed spectra, after reflection and polarizing by the LGMLs, give the three Stokes parameters needed to determine a source's linear polarization fraction and orientation. The design can be extended to higher energies as LGMLs are developed further. We describe the potential scientific return and the proposed mission concept following the results of a JPL Team X concept study.

The Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment is a soft X-ray grating spectrometer payload to be launched on a suborbital rocket. The spectrometer will use three technologies – monocrystalline silicon X-ray optics (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center), X-ray reflection gratings (The Pennsylvania State University), and electron-multiplying CCDs (XCAM Ltd., The Open University) – to achieve the highest performance on-sky soft X-ray spectrum to date when launched. To realize this performance, not only must each of the three individual spectrometer components perform at their required level, but these components also must be aligned to one another to the required tolerances and integrated into the payload. In this manuscript, we report on the alignment and integration plan for each component within the spectrometer.

The Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment (OGRE) is a soft x-ray grating spectrometer to be flown on a suborbital rocket. The payload is designed to obtain the highest-resolution soft x-ray spectrum of Capella to date with a resolution goal of R ( λ / Δλ ) > 2000 at select wavelengths in its 10 to 55 Å bandpass of interest. The optical design of the spectrometer realizes a theoretical maximum resolution of R ≈ 5000, but this performance does not consider the finite performance of the individual spectrometer components, misalignments between components, and in-flight pointing errors. These errors all degrade the performance of the spectrometer from its theoretical maximum. A comprehensive line-spread function (LSF) error budget has been constructed for the OGRE spectrometer to identify contributions to the LSF, to determine how each of these affects the LSF, and to inform performance requirements and alignment tolerances for the spectrometer. In this document, the comprehensive LSF error budget for the OGRE spectrometer is presented, the resulting errors are validated via raytrace simulations, the implications of these results are discussed, and future work is identified.

We describe a new implementation of a broad-band soft X-ray polarimeter, substantially based on a previous design. This implementation, the Pioneer Soft X-ray Polarimeter (PiSoX) is a SmallSat, designed for NASA’s call for Astrophysics Pioneers, small missions that could be CubeSats, balloon experiments, or SmallSats. As in REDSoX, the grating arrangement is designed optimally for the purpose of polarimetry with broad-band focussing optics by matching the dispersion of the spectrometer channels to laterally graded multilayers (LGMLs). The system can achieve polarization modulation factors over 90%. For PiSoX, the optics are lightweight Si mirrors in a one-bounce parabolic configuration. High efficiency, blazed gratings from opposite sectors are oriented to disperse to a LGML forming a channel covering the wavelength range from 35 A to 75 A (165 - 350 eV). Upon satellite rotation, the intensities of the dispersed spectra, after reflection and polarizing by the LGMLs, give the three Stokes parameters needed to determine a source’s linear polarization fraction and orientation. The design can be extended to higher energies as LGMLs are developed further. We describe examples of the potential scientific return from instruments based on this design.

This paper analyzes a recently published model for Lynx Mirror Assembly production duration, to understand the sensitivity of duration to various factors. The factors considered are finite process yield, knowledge of the individual process times and finite server reliability. In all of these cases, closed form estimates are given along with numerical examples. This initial analysis indicates that accurate and precise knowledge of the process times is fundamental to making an accurate prediction of schedule duration. Analysis of the failure of any given server is also explained and can be used as the basis of a rational sparing policy.

The capability of an X-ray telescope depends on the quality of its mirror, which can be characterized by four quantities: point-spread-function, photon-collecting area, field of view, and energy bandwidth. In this paper, we report on our effort of developing an X-ray mirror technology that advances all of those four quantities for future X-ray astronomical missions. In addition, we have adopted a modular approach, capable of making mirror assemblies for missions of all sizes, from large missions like Lynx, to medium-sized Probes like AXIS, TAP, and HEX-P, to Explorers like STAR-X and FORCE, and to small sub-orbital missions like OGRE. This approach takes into account that all X-ray telescopes must be spaceborne and therefore require their mirror assemblies be lightweight. It is designed to make use of modern mass production techniques and commercial off-the-shelf equipment and materials to maximize production throughput and thereby to minimize implementation schedule and costs.

Astronomical observations of distant and faint X-ray sources will expand our understanding of the evolving universe. These challenging science goals require X-ray optical elements that are manufactured, measured, coated, aligned, assembled, and tested at scale. The Next Generation X-ray Optics (NGXO) group at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center is developing solutions to the challenges faced in planning, constructing, and integrating X-ray optics for future telescopes such as the Lynx Large Mission concept for the Astro2020 Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics, Probe Mission concepts AXIS, TAP, and HEX-P, the Explorer Mission concepts STAR-X and FORCE and the sub-orbital mission OGRE. The lightweight mirror segments, efficiently manufactured from blocks of commercially available monocrystalline silicon, are coated, aligned, and fixed in modular form. This paper discusses our first attempt to encapsulate our technology experience and knowledge into a model to meet the challenge of engineering and production of the many modules required for a spaceflight mission. Through parallel lines of fabrication, assembly, and testing, as well as the use of existing high throughput industrial technologies, ∼104 coated X-ray mirror segments can be integrated into ∼103 modules adhering to a set budget and schedule that survive environmental testing and approach the diffraction limit.

The capability of future X-ray telescopes depends on the quality of their Point Spread Function (PSF) and the size of their field of view. Traditional designs, such as Wolter, and Wolter-Schwarzschild telescopes are stigmatic on the optical axis but their PSF degrades rapidly off-axis. At the optimal focal surface, their PSFs can be significantly improved. We present a simple optimization process for Wolter (W), Wolter-Schwarzschild (WS) and Hyperboloid-Hyperboloid (HH) telescopes that substantially improves the off-axis PSF for either narrow or wide field of view applications. In this paper, we will compare the optical performance of conventional and optimized W-, WS-, and HH-telescopes for a wide range of telescope diameters that can be used to build up future x-ray telescopes.

The fundamental developmental issue facing the next generation of X-ray astronomical telescopes is the manufacturability, assembly, and structural robustness of the grazing incidence optics. Combining the high angular resolution requirements with large effective areas and physical launch vehicle restrictions leads to very thin shelled optics that must remain very stable. Meeting these stability requirements while also surviving launch and space environments presents a significant engineering challenge. Over the last few years, the Next Generation X-ray Optics (NGXO) team at NASA Goddard has been developing thin segmented silicon optics that are assembled into both modules and meta-shells, which show great promise in meeting these challenges. This paper summarizes the analytical approaches, as well as the environmental tests, used to assess such assemblies. Many parameters in the design space of the assembly have been assessed and optimized using Finite Element (FE) models and ray trace algorithms. The results of these analyses have helped shape reasonable and justifiable error budgets, as well as guide the team’s decision making in both near and long term processes. The structural integrity of an assembly has been assessed both with testing and FE models. Preliminary strength testing has been conducted on the basic components used in the assembly.

Future astronomical X-ray spectrometer missions call for high spectral resolution in conjunction with high throughput. To achieve both of these requirements simultaneously, many grating elements must be aligned such that their diffraction arcs overlap at the focal plane. Methods for the alignment of reflection gratings operated in the extreme off-plane mount are being developed at The Pennsylvania State University in support of the Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment. We report on the alignment methodology and performance tests of an aligned reflection grating module.

Recent advances in the fabrication of segmented silicon mirrors make it possible to build large-area, lightweight, high-resolution x-ray telescopes with arc-second angular resolution. To build such a telescope, we fabricate accurate silicon mirrors and develop alignment and bonding techniques to precisely align and integrate these silicon mirror segments into modular units. In this way, the processes of mirror fabrication, mirror alignment and bonding, and subsequent integration into units of successive larger scale are completely independent, and their technologies can be developed independently. In this paper, we present recent improvement in the precision of optical alignment and mirror bonding. We discuss the measurement of the mirror’s focusing in a parallel optical beam and address the practical challenges in bonding these mirrors into modules as an intermediate step to build up a full-scale telescope for space missions.

The Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment (OGRE) is a soft X-ray spectroscopy suborbital rocket payload designed to obtain the highest-resolution soft X-ray spectrum of Capella to date. With a spectral resolution goal of R(λ/uλ) < 2000 at select wavelengths in its 10-55 A bandpass of interest, the payload will be able to study the line-dominated spectrum of Capella in unprecedented detail. To achieve this performance goal, the payload will employ three key technologies: mono-crystalline silicon X-ray mirrors developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, reflection gratings manufactured at The Pennsylvania State University, and electron-multiplying CCDs developed by The Open University and XCAM Ltd. In this document, an updated optical design that can achieve the performance goal of the OGRE spectrometer and a new grating alignment concept to realize this optical design are described.

We report on a concept for curved diffractive X-ray optics (CDXO). CDXO would enable potential new optical designs for X-ray instruments, such as a two element spectrometer, in which the secondary element of an X- ray mirror pair is patterned with an X-ray grating. A two-element spectrometer design eliminates the grating assembly, resulting in decreased instrument mass and reduced power requirements. In addition, a two-element spectrometer may realize cost/schedule savings by eliminating a separate grating alignment effort, and yield increased effective area over three element designs. We present a raytrace concept study of a two-element spectrometer compact enough to fit within a sounding rocket payload. We also review the progress made in electron-beam lithography (EBL) techniques that would enable curved diffractive X-ray optics to be patterned, and outline a procedure by which the accuracy of the EBL patterning process can be measured interferometrically.

Progress within the field of x-ray astronomy depends on astronomical x-ray observations of ever-increasing quality and speed. Fast and high-resolution x-ray observations over a broad spectral range promise amazing new discoveries. These observations, however, require a spaceborne x-ray telescope of unprecedented imaging power. Of the numerous technological concerns associated with the design and construction of such a telescope, the x-ray focusing optics present a particularly complex and arduous set of challenges. An x-ray optical assembly comprises many thousands of x-ray mirrors, a most critical element. Our group at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) pursues the development of an x-ray mirror manufacturing process capable of meeting the stringent quality, production time, and cost requirements of the next-generation of x-ray telescopes. The manufacturing process employs monocrystalline silicon: a lightweight, stiff, thermally conductive, and readily available material which is free of internal stress; it is a nearly ideal material for a thin mirror substrate. The process involves various traditional optical fabrication techniques adapted to x-ray mirror geometry. Presently, our process is capable of fabricating sub-arcsecond half-powerdiameter (HPD) resolution mirror pairs (primary and secondary) at a mirror thickness of 0.5 mm and of virtually any x-ray optical design (e.g. Wolter-I, Wolter-Schwarzschild, etc.). The mirror substrate surface quality is comparable to, and sometimes exceeding, that of the mirrors on the Chandra X-ray Observatory. This paper describes the various manufacturing steps involved in the production of x-ray mirror substrates and a present status report.

The Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment (OGRE) is a sounding rocket payload designed to obtain a high-resolution soft X-ray spectrum of Capella. OGRE’s optical system uses new technologies including state-of-the-art X-ray optics, custom arrays of reflection gratings, and an array of EM-CCDs. Many of these technologies will be tested for the first time in flight with OGRE. To achieve the high performance that these new technologies are capable of, the payload components must be properly aligned to meet high tolerances. This paper will outline OGRE’s opto-mechanical design for achieving alignment within these tolerances. Specifically, the design of the X-ray grating arrays will be discussed.

We present a spectral analysis of four coordinated NuSTAR+XMM-Newton observations of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 1365. These exhibit an extreme level of spectral variability, which is primarily due to variable line-of-sight absorption, revealing relatively unobscured states in this source for the first time. Despite the diverse range of absorption states, each of the observations displays the same characteristic signatures of relativistic reflection from the inner accretion disk. Through time-resolved spectroscopy we find that the strength of the relativistic iron line and the Compton reflection hump relative to the intrinsic continuum are well correlated, as expected if they are two aspects of the same broadband reflection spectrum. We apply self-consistent disk reflection models to these time-resolved spectra in order to constrain the inner disk parameters, allowing for variable, partially covering absorption to account for the vastly different absorption states observed. Each of the four observations is treated independently to test the consistency of the results obtained for the black hole spin and the disk inclination, which should not vary on observable timescales. We find both the spin and the inclination determined from the reflection spectrum to be consistent, confirming NGC 1365 hosts a rapidly rotating black hole; in all cases the dimensionless spin parameter is constrained to be a* > 0.97 (at 90% statistical confidence or better)., 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Future space X-ray mission concepts like STAR-X, AXIS and Lynx foresee optics with both high angular resolutions (HEW ~ 0.5 to 5 arcsec) and large collecting areas (~0.2-2.0 m2). These optics are very challenging to be produced and their manufacturing is under study. The Ion Beam Figuring (IBF) is one of the few techniques that is capable of correcting the residual manufacturing errors of the mirror shells and obtain the desired final optical figure. INAF-OABrera has two IBF facilities and is investigating the use of IBF on thin foils made by different materials, namely Silicon and Fused Silica. In this paper we describe the results obtained in a preliminary study on Silicon shells.

The High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a probe-class mission concept that will extend the reach of broadband (2-200 keV) X-ray observations, with 40 times the sensitivity of any previous mission in the 10-80 keV band and 10,000 times the sensitivity of any previous mission in the 80-200 keV band. HEX-P addresses key NASA science goals and is an important complement to ESA's L-class Athena mission. Working in coordination with Athena HEX-P will provide continuum measurements that are essential for interpreting Athena spectra. With angular resolution improved by more than an order of magnitude relative to NuSTAR, HEX-P will carry out an independent program aimed at addressing questions unique to the high energy X-ray band, such as the nature of the source that powers Active Galactic Nuclei, the evolution of black holes in obscured environments, and understanding of how compact binary systems form, evolve and influence galactic systems. With heritage from NuSTAR, HEX-P can be executed within the next decade with a budget less than double that of a Medium class Explorer (MIDEX) mission.

X-ray astronomy critically depends on X-ray optics. The capability of an X-ray telescope is largelydetermined by the point-spread function (PSF) and the photon-collection area of its mirrors, the same astelescopes in other wavelength bands. Since an X-ray telescope must be operated above the atmosphere inspace and that X-rays reflect only at grazing incidence, X-ray mirrors must be both lightweight and thin, bothof which add significant technical and engineering challenge to making an X-ray telescope. In this paper wereport our effort at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) of developing an approach to making an Xraymirror assembly that can be significantly better than the mirror assembly currently flying on the ChandraX-ray Observatory in each of the three aspects: PSF, effective area per unit mass, and production cost per uniteffective area. Our approach is based on the precision polishing of mono-crystalline silicon to fabricate thinand lightweight X-ray mirrors of the highest figure quality and micro-roughness, therefore, having thepotential of achieving diffraction-limited X-ray optics. When successfully developed, this approach will makeimplementable in the 2020s and 2030s many X-ray astronomical missions that are currently on the drawingboard, including sounding rocket flights such as OGRE, Explorer class missions such as STAR-X andFORCE, Probe class missions such as AXIS, TAP, and HEX-P, as well as large missions such as Lynx.

At NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, we consistently produce affordable lightweight sub-arcsecond X-ray mirrors made of directly polished single crystal silicon. Silicon is favored for its high stiffness, low density, high thermal conductivity, zero internal stress, and commercial availability. Our manufacturing process includes traditional grinding, lapping, and polishing methods adapted to X-ray mirror geometry. These mirrors promise to meet the stringent requirements of various planned X-ray telescope missions. Presently, we are refining the many steps involved in our manufacturing process. This paper reports an overview of our mirror manufacturing process and the most recent results.

Recent advances in the fabrication of silicon mirrors and their alignment and integration methods make it possible to build large-area, lightweight, high-resolution x-ray telescopes with arc-second angular resolution. Such a telescope, having simultaneously arc-second resolution and large (> 1 m 2 ) collecting area, has never been built before and it will revolutionize high energy astronomy. For such optics, the challenges are twofold: fabrication of high quality mirror segments and precise integration of thousands of these mirrors to a common sharp focus. In this paper, we address the technology for the mirror integration carried out at Goddard Space Flight Center and report the recent result of making such high-resolution optics. We address the crucial technology components: positioning a mirror, measuring its focus, adjusting its mount pointsto optimize the focus, bonding the mirror, and co-alignment of mirrors. We also present the latest x-ray test results that demonstrate the efficacy of such methods and address areas for further improvement. Presently, mirrors built this way have a resolution of 2²-3² HPD (half-ower diameter).

The Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment (OGRE) is a soft X-ray spectroscopy suborbital rocket payload scheduled for launch in Q3 2020 from Wallops Flight Facility. The payload will serve as a testbed for several key technologies which can help achieve the desired performance increases for the next generation of X-ray spectrographs and other space-based missions: monocrystalline silicon X-ray mirrors developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, reflection gratings manufactured at The Pennsylvania State University, and electron-multiplying CCDs developed by the Open University and XCAM Ltd. With these three technologies, OGRE hopes to obtain the highest-resolution on-sky soft X-ray spectrum to date. We discuss the optical design of the OGRE payload.

Segmented X-ray telescope mirrors fabricated from thin silicon substrates are being developed by a group at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for future generation telescopes such as the Lynx mission concept. The Goddard team has demonstrated high precision silicon mirrors with high angular resolution (~1’’) manufactured by a simple, low cost process. However, the required high-Z optical coatings on mirror front surfaces are difficult to deposit without significant compressive thin film stress, which threatens to distort mirrors and negate the benefits of the high quality substrates. Coating stress reduction methods have been investigated by several groups, but none to date have reported success on real mirrors to the required tolerances. In this paper, we report a new method for correcting mirrors with stress-induced distortion which utilizes a micro-patterned silicon oxide layer on the mirror’s back side. Due to the excellent lithographic precision of the patterning process, we demonstrate stress compensation control to a precision of ~0.3%. The proposed process is simple and inexpensive due to the relatively large pattern features on the photomask. The correction process has been tested on flat silicon wafers with 30 nm-thick chrome coatings under compressive stress and achieved surface slope improvements of a factor of ~80. We have also successfully compensated two iridium-coated silicon mirrors provided by the Goddard group. The RMS slope errors on coated mirrors after compensation were only degraded by ~0.06 arc-seconds RMS axial slope compared to the initial uncoated state.

FORCE is a 1.2 tonnes small mission dedicated for wide-band fine-imaging x-ray observation. It covers from 1 to 80 keV with a good angular resolution of $15"$ half-power-diameter. It is proposed to be launched around mid-2020s and designed to reach a limiting sensitivity as good as $F_X (10-40~{\rm keV}) = 3 \times 10^{-15}$~erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ keV$^{-1}$ within 1~Ms. This number is one order of magnitude better than current best one. With its high-sensitivity wide-band coverage, FORCE will probe the new science field of "missing BHs", searching for families of black holes of which populations and evolutions are not well known. Other point-source and diffuse-source sciences are also considered. FORCE will also provide the "hard x-ray coverage" to forthcoming large soft x-ray observatories., On SPIE Space Telescopes and Instrumentation 2018:Ultraviolet to Gamma Ray. 14 Pages, and 4 Figures

We present the development of the reflective coating by magnetron sputtering deposition onto precisely-fabricated thin X-ray mirrors. Our goal is to remove distortion induced by the coating and then keep their surface pro les. We first addressed the uniform coating to minimize the distortion by introducing a mask to control the spatial distribution of the coating thickness. The uniformity was finally achieved within 1%. We next tried a platinum single-layer coating on a glass substrate with a dimension of 200 mm 125 mm. The distortion caused by the frontside coating with a thickness of 320 A was found to be at most 1 m, smaller than the previous results obtained from the non-uniform coating. We then carried out the platinum coating with the same amount of the thickness on the backside surface of the glass substrate. The surface pro le of the glass substrate was fully recovered, indicating that the residual stress was successfully balanced by the backside coating. Furthermore, we tried to an iridium single-layer coating with a thickness of 150 Aon the silicon mirrors. The frontside coating caused the degradation of the imaging quality by 7:5 arcsec in half-power width. However, the backside coating with the same amount of the thickness reduced this degradation to be 3:4 arcsec. Finally, an additional backside coating with a thickness of 100 A and the annealing to relax the residual stress were found to eliminate the distortion completely; the final degradation of the imaging quality was only 0:4 arcsec.

The Off-plane Grating Rocket Experiment (OGRE) is a sub-orbital rocket payload that will make the highest spectral resolution astronomical observation of the soft X-ray Universe to date. Capella, OGRE’s science target, has a well-defined line emission spectrum and is frequently used as a calibration source for X-ray observatories such as Chandra. This makes Capella an excellent target to test the technologies on OGRE, many of which have not previously flown. Through the use of state-of-the-art X-ray optics, co-aligned arrays of off-plane reflection gratings, and an X-ray camera based around four Electron Multiplying CCDs, OGRE will act as a proving ground for next generation X-ray spectrometers.

The High-Energy X-ray Probe (HEX-P) is a probe-class next-generation high-energy X-ray mission concept that will vastly extend the reach of broadband X-ray observations. Studying the 2-200 keV energy range, HEXP has 40 times the sensitivity of any previous mission in the 10-80 keV band, and will be the first focusing instrument in the 80-200 keV band. A successor to the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), a NASA Small Explorer launched in 2012, HEX-P addresses key NASA science objectives, and will serve as an important complement to ESA's L-class Athena mission. HEX-P will utilize multilayer coated X-ray optics, and in this paper we present the details of the optical design, and discuss the multilayer prescriptions necessary for the reflection of hard X-ray photons. We consider multiple module designs with the aim of investigating the tradeoff between high- and low-energy effective area, and review the technology development necessary to reach that goal within the next decade.

Next Generation X-Ray Optics (NGXO) team at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) has been developing a new silicon-based grazing incidence mirror technology for future high resolution x-ray astronomical missions. Recently, the GSFC team completed the construction of first few mirror modules that contain one pair of mirrors. One of the mirror pairs was tested in GSFC 600-m long beamline facility and Panter (Neuried, Germay) 120-m long x-ray beamline facility. Both full aperture x-ray tests, Hartmann tests, and focal plane sweeps were completed. In this paper we present the data analysis process and compare the results from our models to measured x-ray centroid data, x-ray performance data, and out of focus images of the mirror pair.

We present the first results of a search for transient hard X-ray (HXR) emission in the quiet solar corona with the \textit{Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array} (\textit{NuSTAR}) satellite. While \textit{NuSTAR} was designed as an astrophysics mission, it can observe the Sun above 2~keV with unprecedented sensitivity due to its pioneering use of focusing optics. \textit{NuSTAR} first observed quiet Sun regions on 2014 November 1, although out-of-view active regions contributed a notable amount of background in the form of single-bounce (unfocused) X-rays. We conducted a search for quiet Sun transient brightenings on time scales of 100 s and set upper limits on emission in two energy bands. We set 2.5--4~keV limits on brightenings with time scales of 100 s, expressed as the temperature T and emission measure EM of a thermal plasma. We also set 10--20~keV limits on brightenings with time scales of 30, 60, and 100 s, expressed as model-independent photon fluxes. The limits in both bands are well below previous HXR microflare detections, though not low enough to detect events of equivalent T and EM as quiet Sun brightenings seen in soft X-ray observations. We expect future observations during solar minimum to increase the \textit{NuSTAR} sensitivity by over two orders of magnitude due to higher instrument livetime and reduced solar background., 11 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal
