Abstract

Abstract Hypothesis Biological response modifiers (immunotherapy) in combination to chemotherapy are superior to that of chemotherapy in treatment of breast cancer (triple-negative/HER-2 ( +)), multiple myeloma, and non-small-cell lung cancer. Methods This review article consists of a total of eighteen independent randomized controlled clinical trials ranging from phases one to three. Patients were randomly selected for immunomodulatory treatment or chemotherapy and assessed for a specific mutation expression that the immunomodulatory agent targets. Kaplan–Meier plots, swimmer plots, and bar graphs depict overall/progression-free survival, objective response, and clinical response rates. The data collected was assessed by using 95% confidence interval and a p value of 0.05. Patients were treated until disease progression. Results Biological response modifiers (immunotherapy) resulted in significantly longer median progression-free survival in PD-L1-positive breast cancer (7.5 months compared to 5.0 months in control group), multiple myeloma (60.7% compared to 26.9% in the daratumumab and placebo groups, respectively), and in non-small-cell lung cancer (median progression-free survival was 10.3 months in the pembrolizumab group compared to 6.0 months in the chemotherapy group): higher complete responses in multiple myeloma (79% and 66% in the elotuzumab and control groups, respectively) and lower disease progression in PD-L1-positive non-small-cell lung cancer (62.1% of pembrolizumab versus 50.3% of chemotherapy patients had no disease progression at 6 months). Conclusion Combination biological response modifiers (immunotherapy) and chemotherapy displayed benefit in overall/progression-free survival, response rate, duration of response, clinical benefit, and invasive disease-free survival in triple-negative/HER2-2( +) breast cancer, multiple myeloma, and non-small-cell lung cancer.

Abstract

Abstract Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a yeast microorganism known to inhabit the gut micro-biome. It is commonly used in the fermentation process of beer, wine, bread making, and is naturally found in soil, plants, and fruit. Saccharomyces boulardii (subtype of Saccharomyces) and cerevisiae are closely related and are commonly used as a probiotic and in treatment for diarrhea. In rare circumstances, Saccharomyces has been shown to cause infection in the immunocompromised and intensive care unit (ICU) patients, with antibiotic use, and central venous catheter use. This prompts us to present one of the only documented case reports of a lung parenchyma infection with Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a 64-year-old immunocompetent male with a past medical history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD), atrial fibrillation, atrioventricular (AV) nodal ablation, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFrEF (post-status automated implantable cardioverter-defibrillator)), coronary artery bypass graft (CABG), gastric esophageal reflux disease (GERD), and a Zenker diverticulum.

Abstract

Abstract Background Mycobacterium massiliense is a rapidly growing a non-tuberculous mycobacterium that has been validated as a separate species from the Mycobacterium abscessus group. Only few antibiotics have demonstrated germicidal activity against Mycobacterium massiliense, and some of those include amikacin, clarithromycin, and cefoxitin. Case presentation We present the first reported case of near-fatal septic shock caused by disseminated Mycobacterium massiliense after de-clotting of an infected arteriovenous fistula, in a patient with end-stage renal disease with concomitant human immunodeficiency virus infection. Early recognition of the culprit organism and treatment with a combination therapy of clarithromycin and amikacin led to rapid improvement. Conclusion This unique case can highlight the importance of taking into consideration Mycobacterium massiliense infection as a cause of arteriovenous fistula thrombosis and highlights the risk of disseminated infection leading to life threatening sepsis upon de-clotting of the fistula.

Abstract

Aim: The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) exam's pass rate is considered a quality measure of a residency program, yet few interventions have shown benefit in reducing the failure rate. We developed a web-based Directed Reading (DR) program with an aim to increase medical knowledge and reduce ABIM exam failure rate. Methods: Internal medicine residents at our academic medical center with In-Training Examination (ITE) scores ≤35th percentile from 2007 to 2013 were enrolled in DR. The program matches residents to reading assignments based on their own ITE-failed educational objectives and provides direct electronic feedback from their teaching physicians. ABIM exam pass rates were analyzed across various groups between 2002 and 2013 to examine the effect of the DR program on residents with ITE scores ≤35 percentile pre- (2002–2006) and post-intervention (2007–2013). A time commitment survey was also given to physicians and DR residents at the end of the study. Results: Residents who never scored ≤35 percentile on ITE were the most likely to pass the ABIM exam on first attempt regardless of time period. Abstract

The Muon g-2 Experiment at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL) has measured the muon anomalous precession frequency $\omega_a$ to an uncertainty of 434 parts per billion (ppb), statistical, and 56 ppb, systematic, with data collected in four storage ring configurations during its first physics run in 2018. When combined with a precision measurement of the magnetic field of the experiment's muon storage ring, the precession frequency measurement determines a muon magnetic anomaly of $a_{\mu}({\rm FNAL}) = 116\,592\,040(54) \times 10^{-11}$ (0.46 ppm). This article describes the multiple techniques employed in the reconstruction, analysis and fitting of the data to measure the precession frequency. It also presents the averaging of the results from the eleven separate determinations of \omega_a, and the systematic uncertainties on the result., Comment: 29 pages, 19 figures. Abstract

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory has measured the anomalous precession frequency $a^{}_\mu = (g^{}_\mu-2)/2$ of the muon to a combined precision of 0.46 parts per million with data collected during its first physics run in 2018. This paper documents the measurement of the magnetic field in the muon storage ring. The magnetic field is monitored by nuclear magnetic resonance systems and calibrated in terms of the equivalent proton spin precession frequency in a spherical water sample at 34.7$^\circ$C. The measured field is weighted by the muon distribution resulting in $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$, the denominator in the ratio $\omega^{}_a$/$\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ that together with known fundamental constants yields $a^{}_\mu$. The reported uncertainty on $\tilde{\omega}'^{}_p$ for the Run-1 data set is 114 ppb consisting of uncertainty contributions from frequency extraction, calibration, mapping, tracking, and averaging of 56 ppb, and contributions from fast transient fields of 99 ppb., Comment: Added one citation and corrected missing normalization in Eqs (35) and (36)

Abstract

This paper presents the beam dynamics systematic corrections and their uncertainties for the Run-1 data set of the Fermilab Muon g-2 Experiment. Two corrections to the measured muon precession frequency $\omega_a^m$ are associated with well-known effects owing to the use of electrostatic quadrupole (ESQ) vertical focusing in the storage ring. An average vertically oriented motional magnetic field is felt by relativistic muons passing transversely through the radial electric field components created by the ESQ system. The correction depends on the stored momentum distribution and the tunes of the ring, which has relatively weak vertical focusing. Vertical betatron motions imply that the muons do not orbit the ring in a plane exactly orthogonal to the vertical magnetic field direction. A correction is necessary to account for an average pitch angle associated with their trajectories. A third small correction is necessary because muons that escape the ring during the storage time are slightly biased in initial spin phase compared to the parent distribution. Finally, because two high-voltage resistors in the ESQ network had longer than designed RC time constants, the vertical and horizontal centroids and envelopes of the stored muon beam drifted slightly, but coherently, during each storage ring fill. This led to the discovery of an important phase-acceptance relationship that requires a correction. Abstract

Students with poor spatial abilities experience a barrier to academic success early in the STEM curriculum. However, Sorby et al. report that even brief training can improve spatial reasoning in students who lack them. Further, the National Research Council recommends that spatial thinking skills be taught at all educational levels. Halpern defines spatial ability as a heterogeneous cluster of cognitive skills. “Mental rotation” and “orthographic projection” are two of these skills. Mental rotation is the capacity to mentally rotate a two- or three-dimensional object. The orthographic projection skill is the ability to represent three-dimensional objects in two dimensions. These skills are important across the STEM curriculum, and in physics and astronomy these skills have particular relevance.

Abstract

This work demonstrates that two systematic errors, coherent betatron oscillations (CBO) and muon losses can be reduced through application of radio frequency (RF) electric fields, which ultimately increases the sensitivity of the muon $g-2$ experiments. As the ensemble of polarized muons goes around a weak focusing storage ring, their spin precesses, and when they decay through the weak interaction, $\mu^+ \rightarrow e^+ \nu_e \bar{\nu_\mu}$, the decay positrons are detected by electromagnetic calorimeters. In addition to the expected exponential decay in the positron time spectrum, the weak decay asymmetry causes a modulation in the number of positrons in a selected energy range at the difference frequency between the spin and cyclotron frequencies, $\omega_\text{a}$. This frequency is directly proportional to the magnetic anomaly $a_\mu =(g-2)/2$, where $g$ is the g-factor of the muon, which is slightly greater than 2. The detector acceptance depends on the radial position of the muon decay, so the CBO of the muon bunch following injection into the storage ring modulate the measured muon signal with the frequency $\omega_\text{CBO}$. In addition, the muon populations at the edge of the beam hit the walls of the vacuum chamber before decaying, which also affects the signal. Thus, reduction of CBO and unwanted muon loss increases the $a_\mu$ measurement sensitivity. Numerical and experimental studies with RF electric fields yield more than a magnitude reduction of the CBO, with muon losses comparable to the conventional method., Comment: 14 pages, 25 figures

Abstract

We report the measurement of longitudinal electron diffusion coefficients in liquid argon for electric fields between 100 and 2000 V/cm with a gold photocathode as a bright electron source. The measurement principle, apparatus, and data analysis are described. Our results, which are consistent with previous measurements in the region between 100 to 350 V/cm [1] , are systematically higher than the prediction of Atrazhev-Timoshkin[2], and represent the world's best measurement in the region between 350 to 2000 V/cm. Abstract

Fermilab is dedicated to hosting world-class experiments in search of new physics that will operate in the coming years. The Muon g-2 Experiment is one such experiment that will determine with unprecedented precision the muon anomalous magnetic moment, which offers an important test of the Standard Model. We describe in this study the accelerator facility that will deliver a muon beam to this experiment. We first present the lattice design that allows for efficient capture, transport, and delivery of polarized muon beams. We then numerically examine its performance by simulating pion production in the target, muon collection by the downstream beam line optics, as well as transport of muon polarization. We finally establish the conditions required for the safe removal of unwanted secondary particles that minimizes contamination of the final beam., 10 pp

Abstract

We present a simple mathematical model of the dynamics of impurity distribution in liquid argon detectors. This model considers the dominant sources, sinks, and transport of the impurity between and within the gas and liquid phases of a large detector. We use this model to extract Henry's coefficients for oxygen and water from the time dependence of the impurity concentration in the liquid phase, while the gas in the detector volume is being purified. We find that Henry's coefficient for oxygen in liquid argon is 0.9, in agreement with previous measurements by other methods. For water we obtain the first measured value of Henry's coefficient in liquid argon of ∼ 1.0. This value is in reasonable agreement with the value estimated from the ideal solution theory using an extrapolation of the water vapor pressure.

Abstract

We describe the design of a 20-liter test stand constructed to study fundamental properties of liquid argon (LAr). This system utilizes a simple, cost-effective gas argon (GAr) purification to achieve high purity, which is necessary to study electron transport properties in LAr. An electron drift stack with up to 25 cm length is constructed to study electron drift, diffusion, and attachment at various electric fields. Abstract

A new experiment is described to detect a permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with a sensitivity of $10^{-29}e\cdot$cm by using polarized "magic" momentum $0.7$~GeV/c protons in an all-electric storage ring. Systematic errors relevant to the experiment are discussed and techniques to address them are presented. I discuss the progression of ideas over the last decade that has led to extremely sensitive dedicated electric dipole moment (edm) storage ring designs. These ideas grew out of our experience in BNL E821: a precision measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (Bennett et al. Phys Rev D73:072003, 2006).

Abstract

In the muon ( g - 2 ) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the spin precession frequency ω a is obtained from a standard χ 2 minimization fit applied to the time distribution of decay electrons. The unusually high accuracy ( ∼ 0.5 ppm ) of the experiment puts stringent requirements on the quality of the fit and the level of understanding of the statistical properties of the fitted parameters. We discuss the properties of the fits and their implications on the derived value for ω a , including estimates of the effect of an imperfect fit function, methods of including additional external information to reduce the error, the effects of splitting the data into many smaller subsets of data, applying different weighting methods to the data using energy information, and various tests of data suitability.

Abstract

Aim : The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) exam’s pass rate is considered a quality measure of a residency program, yet few interventions have shown benefit in reducing the failure rate. We developed a web-based Directed Reading (DR) program with an aim to increase medical knowledge and reduce ABIM exam failure rate. Methods : Internal medicine residents at our academic medical center with In-Training Examination (ITE) scores ≤35th percentile from 2007 to 2013 were enrolled in DR. The program matches residents to reading assignments based on their own ITE-failed educational objectives and provides direct electronic feedback from their teaching physicians. ABIM exam pass rates were analyzed across various groups between 2002 and 2013 to examine the effect of the DR program on residents with ITE scores ≤35 percentile pre- (2002–2006) and post-intervention (2007–2013). A time commitment survey was also given to physicians and DR residents at the end of the study. Results : Residents who never scored ≤35 percentile on ITE were the most likely to pass the ABIM exam on first attempt regardless of time period. For those who ever scored ≤35 percentile on ITE, 91.9% of residents who participated in DR passed the ABIM exam on first attempt vs 85.2% of their counterparts pre-intervention ( p

Abstract

▪ Abstract The E821 Experiment at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron has measured the muon anomalous magnetic moment aμ to a relative precision of 0.5 parts per million. This effort required a new beamline, a super-ferric muon storage ring with a highly uniform magnetic field, a precision magnetic field measurement system, and electromagnetic calorimeters to record the electrons from muon decay, which carry the essential spin precession frequency information. Data obtained over five years resulted in more than nine billion analyzed events, in nearly equal samples of both muon charges. The experimental results [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] are consistent with each other, as predicted by the CPT invariance theorem. The combined result aμ ± = 11 659 208(6) × 10−10 is 0.9–2.4 standard deviations higher than predicted by theory; the range depends on the method employed to obtain the hadronic vacuum polarization term in the standard-model calculation. We review the experimental design, physical realization, and analysis procedures and compare the results to the theoretical prediction.

Abstract

The design, construction, and operation of the electrostatic quadrupoles used in the muon ðg � 2Þ experiment E821 of BNL are described in detail. A new lead design allowed the construction of a very reliable system which could operate for hundreds of thousands pulses with no sparking. The new design also made possible the elimination of systematic errors associated with the E; B fields generated by the low energy trapped electrons present in Penning traps under medium vacuum conditions. r 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract

The status of the muon g — 2 experiment at the AGS facility of Brookhaven National Laboratory is discussed. Data obtained in 1999 with positive muons has been analyzed and published. The final data set contained 0.95 × 10 9 events and had an accuracy of 1.3 ppm . Approximately four times more data with positive muons and three times more data with negative muons were obtained in 2000 and 2001, respectively. These data were obtained with a more uniform magnetic field and with different storage ring tunes. An accuracy of the order of 0.5 ppm is anticipated.

Abstract

The measurement of the (g−2) value of leptons provides a unique test of theory since it is the only quantity (unlike charge and mass) calculable in the framework of the Standard Model of elementary particles. The muon (g−2) experiment E821 is currently in progress at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Four data taking runs for positive muons and one run for negative muons were successfully accomplished in 1997–2000 and 2001, respectively. Results of the 1997–2000 runs have been published, thus completing our experiment for μ+. Data analysis for the 2001 run for μ− is currently in progress. To provide measurement of \(a_\mu = \tfrac{1} {2}(g - 2)_{\mu ^ - }\) at the same level of accuracy as for \(a_{\mu ^ + } = \tfrac{1} {2}(g - 2)_{\mu ^ + }\), we need to have one more data taking run.

Abstract

The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) has the goal of determining the muon anomalous magnetic moment, a μ (=( g- 2)/2) , to the very high precision of 0.35 parts per million and thus requires a storage ring magnet with great stability and homogeneity. A super-ferric storage ring has been constructed in which the field is to be known to 0.1 ppm . In addition, a new type of air core superconducting inflector has been developed and constructed, which successfully serves as the injection magnet. The injection magnet cancels the storage ring field, 1.5 T , seen by the entering muon beam very close to the storage ring aperture. At the same time, it gives negligible influence to the knowledge of the uniform main magnetic field in the muon storage region located at just 23 mm away from the beam channel. This was accomplished using a new double cosine theta design for the magnetic field which traps most of the return field, and then surrounding the magnet with a special superconducting sheet which traps the remaining return field. The magnet is operated using a warm-to-cold cryogenic cycle which avoids affecting the precision field of the storage ring. This article describes the design, research development, fabrication process, and final performance of this new type of superconducting magnet.

Abstract

A precise measurement of the anomalous g value, a(mu)(+) = (g - 2)/2, for the positive muon has been made at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. The result a(mu)(+) = 11 659 202(14)(6) x 10(-10) (1.3 ppm) is in good agreement with previous measurements and has an error one third that of the combined previous data. The current theoretical value from the standard model is a(mu) (SM)= 11 659 159.6(6.7) x 10(-10) (0.57 ppm) and a(mu)(exp)-a(mu)(SM) = 42(16) x 10(-10) in which a(mu)(exp) is the world average experimental value.

Abstract

(Received 10 September 2013; revised manuscript received 13 June 2014; published 18 July 2014) Analytic expressions for the potentials and fields offlat and cylindrical plates, including the fringe fields, are given. The present analysis extends and simplifies the current expression for the fields of flat plates and develops expressions for the fringe fields of cylindrical plates in terms of polar coordinates. The development of a FORTRAN program to output the field strength at a given location within the Proton Electric Dipole Moment (Proton EDM) ring is then described. Fourth-order Runge-Kutta integration is used to investigate the effect of fringe fields on particle and spin dynamics with precision tracking in the proposed Proton EDM experiment.

Abstract

This paper describes a time-marking system that enables a measurement of the in-plane (horizontal) polarization of a 0.97-GeV/c deuteron beam circulating in the Cooler Synchrotron (COSY) at the Forschungszentrum J\"ulich. The clock time of each polarimeter event is used to unfold the 120-kHz spin precession and assign events to bins according to the direction of the horizontal polarization. After accumulation for one or more seconds, the down-up scattering asymmetry can be calculated for each direction and matched to a sinusoidal function whose magnitude is proportional to the horizontal polarization. This requires prior knowledge of the spin tune or polarization precession rate. An initial estimate is refined by re-sorting the events as the spin tune is adjusted across a narrow range and searching for the maximum polarization magnitude. The result is biased toward polarization values that are too large, in part because of statistical fluctuations but also because sinusoidal fits to even random data will produce sizeable magnitudes when the phase is left free to vary. An analysis procedure is described that matches the time dependence of the horizontal polarization to templates based on emittance-driven polarization loss while correcting for the positive bias. This information will be used to study ways to extend the horizontal polarization lifetime by correcting spin tune spread using ring sextupole fields and thereby to support the feasibility of searching for an intrinsic electric dipole moment using polarized beams in a storage ring. Abstract

A Hall probe device has been built to measure the radial component of the magnetic field in the muon (g-2) storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The ultraprecise (g-2) magnet provides a dominantly vertical magnetic field of about 1:45 T. In order to limit the vertical shift of the muon orbit, the average radial field component should be no more than 5 � 10 � 5 of the vertical field. Our measurements with the Hall probe device achieved an accuracy of 1 � 10 � 5 , which is one of the most precise measurements with Hall probes. Abstract

By the end of an excellent data taking in 1999, we collected approximate to1 billion decay positrons with energy greater than 2 GeV and 30 mus after injection. The analysis of the 1999 data set were performed in parallel by various teams in the collaboration and each team provides a different approach to the analysis. The projected errors are expected to be of order 1.3 ppm statistical and below 0.5 ppm systematic. The data obtained in the 2000 run contains,approximate to4 times more decay positrons compared to 1999.

Abstract

The muon g-2 experiment at Brookhaven has successfully completed two exploratory runs using pion injection and direct muon injection for checkout and initial data taking. The main components of the experiment, which include the pion beam line, the superconducting storage ring and inflector magnets, the muon kicker and the lead-scintillating fiber calorimeters have been satisfactorily commissioned. First results on the anomalous magnetic moment of the positive muon from pion injection are in good agreement with previous experimental results for a(mu+) and a(mu-) from CERN and of comparable accuracy (13 ppm). Analysis of the 1998 muon injection run is in progress and expected to improve the precision to about 4 ppm. A first production run is scheduled for January 1999 with the goal of reaching the 1 ppm error level.

Abstract

The g-2 experiment dipole consists of a single 48 turn, 15.1 meter diameter outer solenoid and a pair of 24 turn inner solenoids, 13.4 meters in diameter. The inner solenoids are hooked in series and are run at a polarity that is opposite that of the outer solenoid, thus creating a dipole field in the space between the inner and outer solenoids. The dipole flux is returned by a C shaped continuous iron yoke. The superconducting solenoid coils are closely coupled to the solenoid mandrels and as such are subject to quench back. This report presents the results of various tests on the g-2 magnet system operating within its iron return yoke. These tests include quench back time constant measurements for the inner and outer solenoids and measurements of the response of the two-phase forced cooled helium cryogenic system to magnet quenches. The overall effectiveness of the g-2 magnet quench protection system was measured.

Abstract

An rf Wien filter (WF) can be used in a storage ring to measure a particle’s electric dipole moment (EDM). If the WF frequency equals the spin precession frequency without WF, and the oscillating WF fields are chosen so that the corresponding transverse Lorentz force equals zero, then a large source of systematic errors is canceled but the EDM signal is not. This effect, discovered by simulation, can be called the “partially frozen spin” effect.

Abstract

The 3.1 GeV muon storage ring for the g-2 experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory has three large solenoid magnets that form a continuous 1.451 tesla storage ring dipole with an average beam bend radius of 7.1 meters. In addition to the three storage ring solenoids, there is an inflector dipole with nested dipole coils that create very little stray magnetic field. A superconducting shield on the inflector gets rid of most of the remaining stray flux. This paper reports on the progress made on the storage ring solenoid magnet system and the inflector as of June 1995. The results of cryogenic system tests are briefly reported.

Abstract

New measurements are reported for the time dependence of the vertical polarization of a 0.97 GeV/c deuteron beam circulating in a storage ring and perturbed by an rf solenoid. The storage ring is the cooler synchrotron (COSY) located at the Forschungszentrum Jülich. The beam polarization was measured continuously using a 1.5 cm thick carbon target located at the edge of the circulating deuteron beam and the scintillators of the EDDA detector. An rf solenoid mounted on the ring was used to generate fields at and near the frequency of the 1-Gγ spin resonance. Measurements were made of the vertical beam polarization as a function of time with the operation of the rf solenoid in either fixed or continuously variable frequency mode. Using rf-solenoid strengths as large as 2.66×10^{-5} revolutions/turn, slow oscillations (∼1 Hz) were observed in the vertical beam polarization. When the circulating beam was continuously electron cooled, these oscillations completely reversed the polarization and showed no sign of diminishing in amplitude. But for the uncooled beam, the oscillation amplitude was damped to nearly zero within a few seconds. A simple spin-tracking model without the details of the COSY ring lattice was successful in reproducing these oscillations and demonstrating the sensitivity of the damping to the magnitude of the synchrotron motion of the beam particles. The model demonstrates that the characteristic features of measurements made in the presence of large synchrotron oscillations are distinct from the features of such measurements when made off resonance. These data were collected in preparation for a study of the spin coherence time, a beam property that needs to become long to enable a search for an electric dipole moment using a storage ring.

Abstract

The g-2 muon storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory consists of four large superconducting solenoids. The two outer solenoids, which are 15.1 meters in diameter, share a common cryostat. The two inner solenoids, which are 13.4 meters in diameter, are in separate cryostats. The two 24 turn inner solenoids are operated at an opposite polarity from the two 24 turn outer solenoids. This generates a dipole field between the inner and outer solenoids. The flux between the solenoids is returned through a C shaped iron return yoke that also shapes the dipole field. The integrated field around the 14 meter diameter storage ring must be good to about 1 part in one million over the 90 mm dia. circular cross section where the muons are stored, averaged over the azimuth. When the four solenoids carry their 5300 A design current, the field in the 18 centimeter gap between the poles is 1.45 T. When the solenoid operates at its design current 5.5 MJ is stored between the poles. The solenoids were wound on site at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The cryostats were built around the solenoid windings which are indirectly cooled using two-phase helium. >

Abstract

In this presentation we discuss a number of experiments on the search for proton or deuteron EDMs, which could be carried out at COSY-Julich. Most promising is the use of an radio-frequency radial electric field flipper that would lead to the accumulation of a CP violating in-plane beam polarization by tiny spin rotations. Most crucial for storage ring searches for EDMs is the spin-coherence time, and we report on analytic evaluations which point at a much larger spin-coherence time for deuterons by about a factor of 200 compared to the one for protons, and at COSY, the spin coherence time for deuterons could amount to about 10 5 s.

Abstract

This paper reports deuteron vector and tensor beam polarization measurements taken to investigate the systematic variations due to geometric beam misalignments and high data rates. The experiments used the In-Beam Polarimeter at the KVI-Groningen and the EDDA detector at the Cooler Synchrotron COSY at Julich. By measuring with very high statistical precision, the contributions that are second-order in the systematic errors become apparent. By calibrating the sensitivity of the polarimeter to such errors, it becomes possible to obtain information from the raw count rate values on the size of the errors and to use this information to correct the polarization measurements. During the experiment, it was possible to demonstrate that corrections were satisfactory at the level of 10(-5) for deliberately large errors. This may facilitate the real time observation of vector polarization changes smaller than 10(-6) in a search for an electric dipole moment using a storage ring. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

The article discusses accounting practices in the U.S. that are out of date and inaccurate. The author presents several accounting cases where the balance sheets are similar, but the profit statements are widely varying. He mentions several of the terms that have become ambiguous with the addition of new components to financial statements over time, and discusses the purposes of the different sections of financial reports. He also attributes the stock market crash in 1929 to several outdated practices that are outlined in the text and calls for better and more clearly understood methods by which to reach actual results.

Abstract

The article discusses the problems associated with joint cost accounting, and analyzes some of the methods used to account for joint costs. The author offers the example of a chemical company to show the difficulties of finding the costs of particular groups of products that are associated with the costs of other products. Several methods are implemented in accounting for the costs of the different products including accounting for time, accounting for bulk, and accounting for value. The author eliminates several of the variations of these methods and shows which one works best for specific situations.

Abstract

Results of a search for the decay mode {ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{gamma}{gamma}{ital ee} ({ital K}{sub {ital L}}{sup 0}{r arrow}{gamma}{ital ee} with a hard internal bremsstrahlung) are reported. The measured branching ratio is (6.6{plus minus}3.2){times}10{sup {minus}7}, in agreement with the QED prediction of 5.8{times}10{sup {minus}7}. The infrared cutoff for both branching ratios is the requirement that both photons have an energy of at least 5 MeV in the center of mass.

Abstract

Three independent searches for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the positive and negative muons have been performed, using spin precession data from the muon g-2 storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Details on the experimental apparatus and the three analyses are presented. Since the individual results on the positive and negative muon, as well as the combined result, d=-0.1(0.9)E-19 e-cm, are all consistent with zero, we set a new muon EDM limit, |d| < 1.9E-19 e-cm (95% C.L.). This represents a factor of 5 improvement over the previous best limit on the muon EDM., 19 pages, 15 figures, 7 tables
