Trephines and trepanning date to ancient times, but a "modern" form of instruments was codified by the seventeenth century. This did not preclude efforts to "improve" the trephine in the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Surgeons and instrument makers in Britain (Jardine and Savigny), France (Thomson and Charrière), and America (Galt and Otto & Reynders) endeavored to make the trephine safer and more precise. In exploring their interactions, this presentation shows the evolving role of the instrument makers not only as fabricators of tools, but as creative design collaborators of surgeons and physicians. TAXIDERMY ,ZOOLOGY education - Abstract
A description by William Jardine of Applegirth of the state of taxidermy in early nineteenth-century Edinburgh draws attention to the agency of the University of Edinburgh's Janitor, John Wilson, in contributing to the University's Natural History Museum, in the building of his own private museum collection, and in the teaching of 'practical zoology'. This description has prompted the present critical examination of Wilson's status and pedagogic practices, the sites in which he operated, and his influence on Scottish taxidermy. BRITISH politics & government, 1945-1964 ,COMMERCE ,COMMUNISTS - Abstract
The article attributes the recognition of Red China's Premier Mao Tse-tung by the British Labor government to the British firms who had hoped to do business with the Communists. Among these were William Jardine and James Matheson who opened China to world trade especially after the Suez Canal became passable. All this stopped when the Communists in Mainland China imposed confiscatory taxes on foreign companies and denied exit to British nationals. On the last week of May 1952, Great Britain ordered British merchants to liquidate their assets in China.
