Abstract

Spontaneously broken symmetry in the ground state of Bi-based topological materials can lead to promising Topological superconductors, such as Cu-Bi2Se3, Sr-Bi2Se3 and Nb-Bi2Se3. In recent studies, coexistence of multiple Fermi surface features and superconductivity was found in Nb-Bi2Se3. However, the resultant mutliple Fermi surface--charge density wave has not been experimentally reported yet. In this paper, we report possible evidence of co-occurence of a charge density wave (CDW) ground state and a superconducting (SC) ground state in Nb intercalated Bi2Se3. An intercalation induced Periodic Lattice Distortion appears to help stabilize the CDW state, possibly assisting in the formation of 1D chains and rendering electronic and phonon anisotropy to this intriguing system.

2. Learning Curve Analysis for Robotic-assisted Harvest of Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap

Abstract

Summary:. The deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap is the preferred method for autologous breast reconstruction after mastectomy, but risks the development of hernia, bulge, and decreased core strength. Robotic harvest of DIEP vessels may limit abdominal wall morbidity through smaller fascial incisions and preservation of motor nerves. This study shows the expected learning curve (LC) for robotic harvest and compares the LC between a general surgeon (GS) and a plastic surgeon (PS). A retrospective cohort study was performed for patients who underwent bilateral robotic DIEP flap harvest from October 2021 to September 2022. We evaluated robotic pedicle dissection time (DT) and compared the times between GS and PS. We calculated LC for each surgeon using the cumulative sum (CUSUM) method, CUSUM=∑i=1n(xi−μ−). The LC was identified as the peak of the CUSUM graph. Forty-four flap dissections were recorded during the collection period: 27 by the PS and 17 by the GS. There was no significant difference in DT between the GS and the PS (P = 0.366), and both surgeons saw a decrease in DT over time. Using the CUSUM method, we see the peak of the plot at patient 9 for the PS and the peak of the plot at patient 5 for the GS, after which cumulative DT decreased. As robotic harvest of DIEP flaps becomes accepted, plastic surgeons who wish to incorporate it into their practice may achieve proficiency in their DT within 10 flap harvests and a similar DT compared with robotic-trained GSs.

3. Solid State NMR and Molecular Dynamics studies of solid crystal systems

Abstract

Solid state systems can often exhibit dynamics on the molecular level, changing conformations, rotating or moving across a crystal structure. In this work, a combination of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Markov models are utilised to describe and explain the dynamics seen on solid crystals and pharmaceutical solvates. NMR is used first to gain an idea of the dynamics, with relaxation rates used to measure activation energies and motional models suggested to fit the data. MD simulations are performed to directly simulate the motion, with the extraction of copies of each molecule from each simulation allowing motion on timescales greater than the simulation time to be observed. The simulations are analysed utilising Markov modelling, assigning conformations to states, extracting state samples to determine the metastable conformations and calculating transition times between these states. Several of the lower diamondoids are analysed, providing descriptions of the motion and agreeing with previously suggested models of the dynamics. These also show some of the technical considerations that need to be taken into account when analysing systems using relatively short simulations. However, good agreement with experiment can still be achieved with these methods with careful planning. Two pharmaceutical solvates are also investigated, allowing a picture of the rapid solvent motion to be obtained. These pictures give some interesting avenues for further investigation, as well as showing this method can be applied to different solid systems.

Abstract

Background: Intimate partner violence (IPV) against women is a serious problem in many developing countries. Longer distance traveled to access water services may affect women's ability to meet domestic obligations and results in violence. However, the associations between times spent by women to access water services and intimate partner violence against women in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) remain unknown. Methods: We used population-based data collected from demographic and health surveys (DHS) in 26 SSA, to examine the associations between round-trip time to water sources and IPV. We estimated round-trip time to water sources based on the self-reported experience of women through their time spent collecting water during the period of 2008 and 2020 as presented in the DHS surveys. Primary outcomes were all self-reported and were derived from the DHS questionnaires about IPV, especially physical violence. We categorized IPV into two groups (Severe and less severe IPV). Respondents who reported being kicked, strangled, threatened with a knife/gun or other weapons by their husbands, or hurt were pooled together and labelled as having experienced severe IPV. Those who claimed to have been pushed, had their arms twisted, or had their hair pulled were grouped and classified as less severe forms of violence. Multivariable logistic regression was performed by fitting crude models and adjusted models. We also conducted a sensitivity analysis, stratification, and country-specific analysis to examine the contributions of these factors to the associations between round-trip time to water sources and IPV. The estimated results are presented as an odds ratio (OR) and their 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: A total of 14,714 (11.2%) women faced severe IPV and 38,222 (28.9%) faced less severe IPV. Results showed that a 30 min increase in round-trip fetching time was associated with an increase in severe IPV and the crude OR was 1.06 (95% CI: 1.05, 1.07) for all 26 countries. After adjusting for covariates, the association of round-trip time to water sources and severe IPV remained positive and significant with an OR of 1.03 (95% CI: 1.01, 1.05). Furthermore, there were positive and significant associations between round-trip time and less severe IPV before and after adjusting for covariates. There were positive associations between round-trip time to basic access to water sources and severe IPV with an OR of 1.08 (95% CI: 1.05, 1.10). For potential effect modifiers, our results revealed disparities in IPV estimates stratified by husbands who consumed alcohol, level of education of husbands, and age of respective women. There were differences in the estimates between countries, the largest increment in severe IPV was observed in Comoros, Sierra Leone, and Namibia. Conclusions: This cross-sectional study provides persuasive evidence for the association between round-trip time to water sources and IPV. Our results highlight the need to protect women against IPV by ensuring proper access to water services in communities faced with water insecurity.

Abstract

Automated fault detection and diagnostics analysis in commercial building systems using machine learning (ML) can improve the building’s efficiency and conserve energy costs from inefficient equipment operation. However, ML can be challenging to implement in existing systems due to a lack of common data standards and because of a lack of building operators trained in ML techniques. Additionally, results from ML procedures can be complicated for untrained users to interpret. Boolean rule-based analysis is standard in current automated fault detection and diagnostics (AFDD) solutions but limits analysis to the rules defined and calibrated by energy engineers. Boolean rule-based analysis and ML can be combined to create an effective fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) tool. Three examples of ML’s advantages over rule-based analysis are explored by analyzing functional building equipment. ML can detect long-term faults in the system caused by a lack of system maintenance. It can also detect faults in system components with incomplete sets of sensors by modeling expected system operations and by making comparisons to actual system operations. An example of ML detecting a failure in a building is shown along with a demonstration of the soft decision boundaries of ML-based FDD compared to Boolean rule-based FDD analysis. The results from the three examples are used to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of using ML for AFDD analysis.

Abstract The ability of SARS-CoV to infect different species, including humans, dogs, cats, minks, ferrets, hamsters, tigers, and deer, pose a continuous threat to human and animal health. Pigs, though closely related to humans, seem to be less susceptible to SARS-CoV-2. Former in vivo studies failed to demonstrate clinical signs and transmission between pigs, while later attempts using a higher infectious dose reported viral shedding and seroconversion. This study investigated species-specific cell susceptibility, virus dose-dependent infectivity, and infection kinetics, using primary human (HRECs) and porcine (PRECs) respiratory epithelial cells. Despite higher ACE2 expression in HRECs compared to PRECs, SARS-CoV-2 infected, and replicated in both PRECs and HRECs in a dose-dependent manner. Cytopathic effect was particularly more evident in PRECs than HRECs, showing the hallmark morphological signs of apoptosis. Further analysis confirmed an early and enhanced apoptotic mechanism driven through caspase 3/7 activation, limiting SARS-CoV-2 propagation in PRECs compared to HRECs. Our findings shed light on a possible mechanism of resistance of pigs to SARS-CoV-2 infection, and it may hold therapeutic value for the treatment of COVID-19.

Abstract

IntroductionDiagnostic test evaluation for African swine fever (ASF) in field settings like Vietnam is critical to understanding test application in intended populations for surveillance and control strategies. Bayesian latent class analysis (BLCA) uses the results of multiple imperfect tests applied to an individual of unknown disease status to estimate the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of each test, forgoing the need for a reference test.MethodsHere, we estimated and compared the diagnostic sensitivity and specificity of a novel indirect ELISA (iELISA) for ASF virus p30 antibody (Innoceleris LLC.) and the VetAlert™ ASF virus DNA Test Kit (qPCR, Tetracore Inc.) in field samples from Vietnam by assuming that disease status 1) is known and 2) is unknown using a BLCA model. In this cross-sectional study, 398 paired, individual swine serum/oral fluid (OF) samples were collected from 30 acutely ASF-affected farms, 37 chronically ASF-affected farms, and 20 ASF-unaffected farms in Vietnam. Samples were tested using both diagnostic assays. Diagnostic sensitivity was calculated assuming samples from ASF-affected farms were true positives and diagnostic sensitivity by assuming samples from unaffected farms were true negatives. ROC curves were plotted and AUC calculated for each test/sample combination. For comparison, a conditionally dependent, four test/sample combination, three population BLCA model was fit.ResultsWhen considering all assumed ASF-affected samples, qPCR sensitivity was higher for serum (65.2%, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] 58.1–71.8) and OF (52%, 95%CI 44.8–59.2) compared to the iELISA (serum: 42.9%, 95%CI 35.9–50.1; OF: 33.3%, 95%CI 26.8–40.4). qPCR-serum had the highest AUC (0.895, 95%CI 0.863–0.928). BLCA estimates were nearly identical to those obtained when assuming disease status and were robust to changes in priors. qPCR sensitivity was considerably higher than ELISA in the acutely-affected population, while ELISA sensitivity was higher in the chronically-affected population. Specificity was nearly perfect for all test/sample types.DiscussionThe effect of disease chronicity on sensitivity and specificity could not be well characterized here due to limited data, but future studies should aim to elucidate these trends to understand the best use of virus and antibody detection methods for ASF. Results presented here will help the design of surveillance and control strategies in Vietnam and other countries affected by ASF.

13. Interaction Networks Are Driven by Community-Responsive Phenotypes in a Chitin-Degrading Consortium of Soil Microbes

Abstract

ABSTRACT Soil microorganisms provide key ecological functions that often rely on metabolic interactions between individual populations of the soil microbiome. To better understand these interactions and community processes, we used chitin, a major carbon and nitrogen source in soil, as a test substrate to investigate microbial interactions during its decomposition. Chitin was applied to a model soil consortium that we developed, “model soil consortium-2” (MSC-2), consisting of eight members of diverse phyla and including both chitin degraders and nondegraders. A multiomics approach revealed how MSC-2 community-level processes during chitin decomposition differ from monocultures of the constituent species. Emergent properties of both species and the community were found, including changes in the chitin degradation potential of Streptomyces species and organization of all species into distinct roles in the chitin degradation process. The members of MSC-2 were further evaluated via metatranscriptomics and community metabolomics. Intriguingly, the most abundant members of MSC-2 were not those that were able to metabolize chitin itself, but rather those that were able to take full advantage of interspecies interactions to grow on chitin decomposition products. Using a model soil consortium greatly increased our knowledge of how carbon is decomposed and metabolized in a community setting, showing that niche size, rather than species metabolic capacity, can drive success and that certain species become active carbon degraders only in the context of their surrounding community. These conclusions fill important knowledge gaps that are key to our understanding of community interactions that support carbon and nitrogen cycling in soil. IMPORTANCE The soil microbiome performs many functions that are key to ecology, agriculture, and nutrient cycling. However, because of the complexity of this ecosystem we do not know the molecular details of the interactions between microbial species that lead to these important functions. Here, we use a representative but simplified model community of bacteria to understand the details of these interactions. We show that certain species act as primary degraders of carbon sources and that the most successful species are likely those that can take the most advantage of breakdown products, not necessarily the primary degraders. We also show that a species phenotype, including whether it is a primary degrader or not, is driven in large part by the membership of the community it resides in. These conclusions are critical to a better understanding of the soil microbial interaction network and how these interactions drive central soil microbiome functions.

14. FE vibration analyses of novel conforming meta-structures and standard lattices for simple bricks and a topology-optimized aerodynamic bracket

Abstract

Abstract Additive manufacturing (AM) enables production of components that are not possible to make using traditional methods. In particular, lattice-type structures are of recent interest due to their potential for high strength-to-weight ratios and other desirable properties. However, standard periodic lattice structures have problems conforming to complex curved and multi-connected shapes (e.g. holes or sharp-to-smooth mating edges). In addition, standard lattices have well known shear and fatigue weaknesses due to their periodic basis/structure. To address these problems, we developed a new type of shape-conforming meta-structure (HGon) that extends lattices, enabling automated conforming to complex shapes and parametric meta-topology control. HGons also have unique vibration dampening and optimization capabilities. This study presents initial FE analyses of (Part 1) dynamic vibration responses of new HGon meta-structures compared with periodic lattices of equivalent density for a series of basic rectangular structures and (Part 2) a complex multi-connected aerodynamic bracket with field-based stress meta-topology optimization. Results show significantly enhanced vibration dampening behavior and superior strength-to-weight ratios for HGon meta-structures as compared to standard lattices.

Abstract

Poor ventilation and polluting cooking fuels in low-income homes cause high exposure, yet relevant global studies are limited. We assessed exposure to in-kitchen particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) employing similar instrumentation in 60 low-income homes across 12 cities: Dhaka (Bangladesh); Chennai (India); Nanjing (China); Medellín (Colombia); São Paulo (Brazil); Cairo (Egypt); Sulaymaniyah (Iraq); Addis Ababa (Ethiopia); Akure (Nigeria); Blantyre (Malawi); Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania) and Nairobi (Kenya). Exposure profiles of kitchen occupants showed that fuel, kitchen volume, cooking type and ventilation were the most prominent factors affecting in-kitchen exposure. Different cuisines resulted in varying cooking durations and disproportional exposures. Occupants in Dhaka, Nanjing, Dar-es-Salaam and Nairobi spent > 40% of their cooking time frying (the highest particle emitting cooking activity) compared with ∼ 68% of time spent boiling/stewing in Cairo, Sulaymaniyah and Akure. The highest average PM2.5 (PM10) concentrations were in Dhaka 185 ± 48 (220 ± 58) μg m−3 owing to small kitchen volume, extensive frying and prolonged cooking compared with the lowest in Medellín 10 ± 3 (14 ± 2) μg m−3. Dual ventilation (mechanical and natural) in Chennai, Cairo and Sulaymaniyah reduced average in-kitchen PM2.5 and PM10 by 2.3- and 1.8-times compared with natural ventilation (open doors) in Addis Ababa, Dar-es-Salam and Nairobi. Using charcoal during cooking (Addis Ababa, Blantyre and Nairobi) increased PM2.5 levels by 1.3- and 3.1-times compared with using natural gas (Nanjing, Medellin and Cairo) and LPG (Chennai, Sao Paulo and Sulaymaniyah), respectively. 17. Paratubal Cystectomy in a Pregnant Woman Using the Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery (SILS) Technique

Abstract

Introduction. The proliferation of prenatal ultrasound has enhanced the detection of adnexal masses during pregnancy. The presentation necessitates a clear approach to investigation and treatment that balances both maternal and fetal risk. Laparoscopy is a safe approach to surgical management in the pregnant patient, and SILS may contribute to minimising perioperative complications. Case Presentation. We present the case of a 21-year-old female in her second trimester of pregnancy presenting with a large 20 cm right adnexal cyst. We proceeded with laparoscopic cystectomy via the SILS technique. There were no intraoperative complications, and she recovered well postoperatively. Conclusion. Laparoscopic resection of adnexal lesions is safe during pregnancy and should be favoured over the open approach. SILS minimises incision sites and has potential for reduction in perioperative morbidity.

Abstract

Automated fault detection and diagnostics in building systems using machine learning (ML) can be applied to commercial buildings and can result in increased efficiency and savings. Using ML for FDD brings the benefit of advancing the analytics of a building. An automated process was developed to provide ML-based building analytics to building engineers and operators with minimal training. The process can be applied to buildings with a variety of configurations, which saves time and manual effort in a fault analysis. Classification analysis is used for fault detection and diagnostics. An ML analysis is defined which introduces advanced diagnostics with metrics to quantify a fault’s impact in the system and rank detected faults in order of impact severity. Explanations of the methodology used for the ML analysis include a description of the algorithms used. The analysis was applied to a building on the Texas A&M University campus where the results are shown to illustrate the performance of the process using measured data from a building.

19. Characterization of the Subclinical Infection of Porcine Deltacoronavirus in Grower Pigs under Experimental Conditions

Abstract

This study characterized the susceptibility and dynamic of porcine deltacoronavirus infection in grower pigs under experimental conditions using a combination of syndromic and laboratory assessments. Seven-week-old conventional pigs (n = 24) were randomly distributed into PDCoV- (n = 12) and mock-inoculated (n = 12) groups. Serum was collected at −7, 0, 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 21, 28, 35, and 42 days post-inoculation (DPI) to evaluate viremia (RT-qPCR) and antibody response (S1-based ELISA). Viral shedding and potential infectivity were determined using pen-based oral fluids and feces collected every other day between DPI 0 and 42. Pigs showed no clinical signs or viremia throughout the study. Active virus shedding was detected in feces (6-22 DPI) and oral fluids (2-30 DPI), peaking at DPI 10. IgG was first detected at DPI 10, being statistically significant after DPI 14 and increasing thereafter, coinciding with the progressive resolution of the infection. Likewise, a significant increase in proinflammatory IL-12 was detected between DPI 10 and 21 in PDCoV-inoculated pigs, which could enhance innate resistance to PDCoV infection. This study demonstrated that active surveillance based on systematic sampling and laboratory testing combining molecular and serological tools is critical for the accurate detection of subclinical circulation of PDCoV in pigs after weaning.

20. Machine Learning Methods for Automated Fault Detection and Diagnostics in Building Systems—A Review

Abstract

Energy consumption in buildings is a significant cost to the building’s operation. As faults are introduced to the system, building energy consumption may increase and may cause a loss in occupant productivity due to poor thermal comfort. Research towards automated fault detection and diagnostics has accelerated in recent history. Rule-based methods have been developed for decades to great success, but recent advances in computing power have opened new doors for more complex processing techniques which could be used for more accurate results. Popular machine learning algorithms may often be applied in both unsupervised and supervised contexts, for both classification and regression outputs. Significant research has been performed in all permutations of these divisions using algorithms such as support vector machines, neural networks, Bayesian networks, and a variety of clustering techniques. An evaluation of the remaining obstacles towards widespread adoption of these algorithms, in both commercial and scientific domains, is made. 24. Modeling the effects of alternative crop–livestock management scenarios on important ecosystem services for smallholder farming from a landscape perspective

Abstract

Smallholder farming systems in southern Africa are characterized by low-input management and integrated livestock and crop production. Low yields and dry-season feed shortages are common. To meet growing food demands, sustainable intensification (SI) of these systems is an important policy goal. While mixed crop–livestock farming may offer greater productivity, it implies trade-offs between feed supply, soil nutrient replenishment, soil carbon accumulation, and other ecosystem functions (ESFs) and ecosystem services (ESSs). Such settings require a detailed system understanding to assess the performance of prevalent management practices and identify potential SI strategies. Models can evaluate different management scenarios on extensive spatiotemporal scales and help identify suitable management strategies. Here, we linked the process-based models APSIM (Agricultural Production Systems sIMulator) for cropland and aDGVM2 (Adaptive Dynamic Global Vegetation Model) for rangeland to investigate the effects of (i) current management practices (minimum input crop–livestock agriculture), (ii) an SI scenario for crop production (with dry-season cropland grazing), and (iii) a scenario with separated rangeland and cropland management (livestock exclusion from cropland) in two representative villages of the Limpopo Province, South Africa, for the period from 2000 to 2010. We focused on the following ESFs and ESSs provided by cropland and rangeland: yield and feed provision, soil carbon storage, cropland leaf area index (LAI), and soil water. Village surveys informed the models of farming practices, livelihood conditions, and environmental circumstances. We found that modest SI measures (small fertilizer quantities, weeding, and crop rotation) led to moderate yield increases of between a factor of 1.2 and 1.6 and reduced soil carbon loss, but they sometimes caused increased growing-season water limitation effects. Thus, SI effects strongly varied between years. Dry-season crop residue grazing reduced feed deficits by approximately a factor of 2 compared with the rangeland-only scenario, but it could not fully compensate for the deficits during the dry-to-wet season transition. We expect that targeted deficit irrigation or measures to improve water retention and the soil water holding capacity may enhance SI efforts. Off-field residue feeding during the dry-to-wet season transition could further reduce feed deficits and decrease rangeland grazing pressure during the early growing season. We argue that integrative modeling frameworks are needed to evaluate landscape-level interactions between ecosystem components, evaluate the climate resilience of landscape-level ecosystem services, and identify effective mitigation and adaptation strategies.

27. Sephardic Diaspora

Abstract

In its widest sense, the Sephardic diaspora refers to the dispersal of Jews and their descendants from the Iberian Peninsula after the expulsions from Spain (1492) and Portugal (1496) over the course of several centuries. The term Sepharad, taken to mean the Iberian Peninsula as a focal point of the Jewish diaspora, is derived from a Hebrew word that appears only once in the shortest book of the Hebrew Bible of the prophet Obadiah and refers to the presence of Jews in exile in an unidentified place called Sepharad possibly after the Babylonian conquest of Judah (597 bce). Its use by them to refer to themselves as, in some way, connected to these initial exiles and up to what point Jews in Iberia prior to the expulsion saw themselves as denizens of a mental and geographical space called Sepharad is still a much-debated point. It certainly became more widely used afterward and is, currently, the term most used to refer to people who recognize themselves as descendants of Jews from Spain and Portugal and maintain some kind of rapport with an Iberian heritage in lore, language, and liturgical and religious practices. The expulsions from Spain and Portugal were in fact some of the last from Europe in the late Middle Ages, as from the eleventh century onward Jews were progressively expelled from most European kingdoms and territories. The measure known as the Alhambra Decree, dated 31 March 1492 by King Ferdinand II of Aragon and Isabella I of Castile, was followed by their expulsion from Portugal in 1497. After a series of persecutions of Jewish communities in several towns in Spain at the end of the fourteenth, mass conversions to Christianity ensued. A new distinction arose between Old Christians (Spaniards who allegedly had no Jewish ancestors) and New Christians, Jews who embraced Christianity and their descendants. The distinction quickly took on a racial connotation and the idea arose of pure and impure blood, which were the basis of exclusionary measures that first took root in the middle of the fifteenth century in Spain. Something similar took place in Portugal after the general conversion of 1497. The suspicion that New Christians or conversos as they were called, were often still adhering to some form of Jewish belief or practice even after conversion often followed them and many were accused of being marranos, crypto Jews who maintained a Christian façade while secretly judaizing or adhering to Judaism. This was largely the justification for the arrival of a tribunals of the Inquisition in Spain (1478) and Portugal (1536). As a result of the menace of Inquisitorial persecution and exclusionary measures, many took flight over the centuries from Spain and Portugal to almost all corners of the world, some of which were dominated by Spain and Portugal in the Americas, Asia, and Africa. Over time, Iberian Jewish communities arose, some of which were by definition secret as Judaism could not be overtly practiced such as in Spanish and Portuguese overseas territories. In other cases, new communities of Iberian Jews who had previously lived as Christians sprang up. The Old and New Christian distinction was only abolished in Portugal in 1773 and in Spain it remained until at least 1865. The Portuguese Inquisition was abolished in 1821 and the Spanish tribunal was finally eliminated in 1834. As such, it could be said that the Iberian diaspora of Jewish origin as such existed into the nineteenth century, at least in Spain. Here we have endeavored to provide some of the salient titles in a vast bibliography that spans the religious, cultural, intellectual, and social life of the descendants of Iberian Jewry who were coerced to leave their homeland, either as Jews after the expulsions of 1492 and 1496 or as converts to Christianity over the span of several centuries, taking into account how problematic the designations of Sepharad and Sephardic are.

Abstract

Due to global climate change, droughts are likely to become more frequent and more severe in many regions such as in South Africa. In Limpopo, observed high climate variability and projected future climate change will likely increase future maize production risks. This paper evaluates drought patterns in Limpopo at two representative sites. We studied how drought patterns are projected to change under future climatic conditions as an important step in identifying adaptation measures (e.g., breeding maize ideotypes resilient to future conditions). Thirty-year time horizons were analyzed, considering three emission scenarios and five global climate models. We applied the WOFOST crop model to simulate maize crop growth and yield formation over South Africa’s summer season. We considered three different crop emergence dates. Drought indices indicated that mainly in the scenario SSP5-8.5 (2051–2080), Univen and Syferkuil will experience worsened drought conditions (DC) in the future. Maize yield tends to decline and future changes in the emergence date seem to impact yield significantly. A possible alternative is to delay sowing date to November or December to reduce the potential yield losses. The grain filling period tends to decrease in the future, and a decrease in the duration of the growth cycle is very likely. Combinations of changed sowing time with more drought tolerant maize cultivars having a longer post-anthesis phase will likely reduce the potential negative impact of climate change on maize. 30. Nasal colonization of methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus among slaughterhouse workers in Dar es salaam, Tanzania

Abstract

Introduction: Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a zoonotic pathogen that is associated with serious and sometimes fatal infections in humans. The pathogen has ability to acquire resistance to most antibiotics. Working in slaughterhouses increase the chance of workers to contract this pathogen. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of MRSA and its associated factors among slaughterhouse workers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from June-July 2018 involving workers from 4 registered slaughterhouses. Social demographics and other information was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Swabs were collected and inoculated in Mannitol salt agar for S. aureus isolation. The isolates were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility using 10µg Oxacillin discs implanted on Muller Hinton Agar plates. Binary logistic regression was employed to determine the association between prevalence of MRSA and independent variables. Results: MRSA was isolated from 39,2% of the 258 enrolled slaughterhouse workers. MRSA colonization was more likely in persons who have been working for more than 21 years (p=0,014) and smokers (p=0,02). On-job training (adjOR=0,417; 95% CI: 0,202-0,858, p= 0,018) was protective against MRSA nasal colonization. Conclusion: Our study has demonstrated the occurrence of MRSA in slaughterhouse workers in Dar es salaam, Tanzania. It is more prevalent in persons who have been working for a long time in slaughterhouses. In addition, provision of on-job training is protective against MRSA nasal colonization. More studies are required to confirm whether the MRSA detected were livestock-associated.

Abstract

Cereal–legume intercropping is promoted within semi-arid regions as an adaptation strategy to water scarcity and drought for low-input systems. Our objectives were firstly to evaluate the crop model APSIM for pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.))—cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp) intercropping—and secondly to investigate the hypothesis that intercropping provides complimentary yield under drought conditions. The APSIM model was evaluated against data from a two year on station field experiment during the dry season of a semi-arid environment in Patancheru, India, with severe, partial and no water deficit stress (well-watered); densities of 17 and 33 plants per m−2, and intercrop and sole crop production of pearl millet and cowpea. Overall, APSIM captured the dynamics of grain yields, indicated by the Willmott Index of Agreement (IA: 1 optimal, 0 the worst) 0.91 from 36 data points (n), total biomass (IA: 0.90, n = 144), leaf area index (LAI, IA = 0.77, n = 66), plant height (IA 0.96, n = 104 pearl millet) and cowpea (IA 0.81, n = 102), as well as soil water (IA 0.73, n = 126). Model accuracy was reasonable in absolute terms (RMSE pearl millet 469 kg/ha and cowpea 322 kg/ha). However, due to low observed values (observed mean yield pearl millet 1,280 kg/ha and cowpea 555 kg/ha), the relative error was high, a known aspect for simulation accuracy in low-yielding environments. The simulation experiment compared the effect of intercropping pearl millet and cowpea versus sole cropping under different plant densities and water supplies. A key finding was that intercropping pearl millet and cowpea resulted in similar total yields to the sole pearl millet. Both sole and intercrop systems responded strongly to increasing water supply, except sole cropped cowpea, which performed relatively better under low water supply. High plant density had a consistent effect, leading to lower yields under low water supply. Higher yields were achieved under high density, but only when water supply was high: absolute highest total intercrop yields were 4,000 (high density) and 3,500 kg/ha (low density). This confirms the suitability of the common practice among farmers who use the low planting density under water scarce conditions. Overall, this study confirms that intercropping is no silver bullet, i.e. not per se a way to achieve high yield production or reduce risk under drought. It does, however, provide an opportunity to diversify food production by additionally integrating protein rich crops, such as cowpea.

The potato psyllid (PoP) Bactericera cockerelli (Sulc) and Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) Diaphorina citri Kuwayama are the insect vectors of the fastidious plant pathogen, Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum (CLso) and Ca. L. asiaticus (CLas), respectively. CLso causes Zebra chip disease of potato and vein-greening in solanaceous species, whereas, CLas causes citrus greening disease. The reliance on insecticides for vector management to reduce pathogen transmission has increased interest in alternative approaches, including RNA interference to abate expression of genes essential for psyllid-mediated Ca. Liberibacter transmission. To identify genes with significantly altered expression at different life stages and conditions of CLso/CLas infection, cDNA libraries were constructed for CLso-infected and -uninfected PoP adults and nymphal instars. Illumina sequencing produced 199,081,451 reads that were assembled into 82,224 unique transcripts. PoP and the analogous transcripts from ACP adult and nymphs reported elsewhere were annotated, organized into functional gene groups using the Gene Ontology classification system, and analyzed for differential in silico expression. Expression profiles revealed vector life stage differences and differential gene expression associated with Liberibacter infection of the psyllid host, including invasion, immune system modulation, nutrition, and development.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify and validate a sensitive, high-throughput, and cost-effective SARS-CoV-2 real-time RT-PCR assay to be used as a surveillance and diagnostic tool for SARS-CoV-2 in a university surveillance program. We conducted a side-by-side clinical evaluation of a newly developed SARS-CoV-2 multiplex assay (EZ-SARS-CoV-2 Real-Time RT-PCR) with the commercial TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit, which has an Emergency Use Authorization from the FDA. The EZ-SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR incorporates two assays targeting the SARS-CoV-2 N gene, an internal control targeting the human RNase P gene, and a PCR inhibition control in a single reaction. Nasopharyngeal (NP) and anterior nares (AN) swabs were tested as individuals and pools with both assays and in the ABI 7500 Fast and the QuantStudio 5 detection platforms. The analytical sensitivity of the EZ-SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR assay was 250 copies/ml or approximately 1.75 genome copy equivalents per reaction. The clinical performance of the EZ-SARS-CoV-2 assay was evaluated using NP and AN samples tested in other laboratories. The diagnostic sensitivity of the assay ranged between 94 and 96% across the detection platforms, and the diagnostic specificity was 94.06%. The positive predictive value was 94%, and the negative predictive value ranged from 94 to 96%. Pooling five NP or AN specimens yielded 93% diagnostic sensitivity. The overall agreement between these SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR assays was high, supported by a Cohen’s kappa value of 0.93. The EZ-SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR assay performance attributes of high sensitivity and specificity with AN sample matrix and pooled upper respiratory samples support its use in a high-throughput surveillance testing program. Abstract

We present a rigorous mathematical treatment of water flow in saturated heterogeneous porous media based on the classical Navier-Stokes formulation that includes vorticity in a heterogeneous porous media. We used the mathematical approach proposed in 1855 by James Clark Maxwell. We show that flow in heterogeneous media results in a flow field described by a heterogeneous complex lamellar vector field with rotational flows, compared to the homogeneous lamellar flow field that results from Darcy’s law. This analysis shows that Darcy’s Law does not accurately describe flow in a heterogeneous porous medium and we encourage precise laboratory experiments to determine under what conditions these issues are important. We publish this work to encourage others to perform numerical and laboratory experiments to determine the circumstances in which this derivation is applicable, and in which the complications can be disregarded.

37. Bounding of Flow and Transport Analysis in Heterogeneous Saturated Porous Media: A Minimum Energy Dissipation Principle for the Bounding and Scale-Up

We apply minimum kinetic energy principles from classic mechanics to heterogeneous porous media flow equations to derive and evaluate rotational flow components to determine bounding homogenous representations. Kelvin characterized irrotational motions in terms of energy dissipation and showed that minimum dynamic energy dissipation occurs if the motion is irrotational; i.e., a homogeneous flow system. For porous media flow, reductions in rotational flow represent heterogeneity reductions. At the limit, a homogeneous system, flow is irrotational. Using these principles, we can find a homogenous system that bounds a more complex heterogeneous system. We present mathematics for using the minimum energy principle to describe flow in heterogeneous porous media along with reduced special cases with the necessary bounding and associated scale-up equations. The first, simple derivation involves no boundary differences and gives results based on direct Kelvin-type minimum energy principles. It provides bounding criteria, but yields only a single ultimate scale-up. We present an extended derivation that considers differing boundaries, which may occur between scale-up elements. This approach enables a piecewise less heterogeneous representation to bound the more heterogeneous system. It provides scale-up flexibility for individual model elements with differing sizes, and shapes and supports a more accurate representation of material properties. We include a case study to illustrate bounding with a single direct scale-up. The case study demonstrates rigorous bounding and provides insight on using bounding flow to help understand heterogeneous systems. This work provides a theoretical basis for developing bounding models of flow systems. This provides a means to justify bounding conditions and results.

Abstract

Lanthanides such as europium with more accessible divalent states are useful for studying redox stability afforded by macrocyclic organic ligands. Substituted cryptands, such as 2.2.2B cryptand, that increase the oxidative stability of divalent europium also provide coordination environments that support synthetic alterations of Eu(II) cryptate complexes. Two single crystal structures were obtained containing nine-coordinate Eu(II) 2.2.2B cryptate complexes that differ by a single coordination site, the occupation of which is dictated by changes in reaction conditions. A crystal structure containing a [Eu(2.2.2B)Cl]+ complex is obtained from a methanol-THF solvent mixture, while a methanol-acetonitrile solvent mixture affords a [Eu(2.2.2B)(CH3OH)]2+ complex. While both crystals exhibit the typical blue emission observed in most Eu(II) containing compounds as a result of 4f65d1 to 4f7 transitions, computational results show that the substitution of a Cl- anion in the place of a methanol molecule causes mixing of the 5d excited states in the Eu(II) 2.2.2B cryptate complex. Additionally, magnetism studies reveal the identity of the capping ligand in the Eu(II) 2.2.2B cryptate complex may also lead to exchange between Eu(II) metal centers facilitated by π-stacking interactions within the structure, slightly altering the anticipated magnetic moment. The synthetic control present in these systems makes them interesting candidates for studying less stable divalent lanthanides and the effects of precise modifications of the electronic structures of low valent lanthanide elements.

Abstract

The REGAIN (Regional versus General Anesthesia for Promoting Independence after Hip Fracture) trial found similar ambulation and survival at 60 days with spinal versus general anesthesia for hip fracture surgery. Trial outcomes evaluating pain, prescription analgesic use, and patient satisfaction have not yet been reported.To compare pain, analgesic use, and satisfaction after hip fracture surgery with spinal versus general anesthesia.Preplanned secondary analysis of a pragmatic randomized trial. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT02507505).46 U.S. and Canadian hospitals.Patients aged 50 years or older undergoing hip fracture surgery.Spinal or general anesthesia.Pain on postoperative days 1 through 3; 60-, 180-, and 365-day pain and prescription analgesic use; and satisfaction with care.A total of 1600 patients were enrolled. The average age was 78 years, and 77% were women. A total of 73.5% (1050 of 1428) of patients reported severe pain during the first 24 hours after surgery. Worst pain over the first 24 hours after surgery was greater with spinal anesthesia (rated from 0 [no pain] to 10 [worst pain imaginable]; mean difference, 0.40 [95% CI, 0.12 to 0.68]). Pain did not differ across groups at other time points. Prescription analgesic use at 60 days occurred in 25% (141 of 563) and 18.8% (108 of 574) of patients assigned to spinal and general anesthesia, respectively (relative risk, 1.33 [CI, 1.06 to 1.65]). Abstract

This article examines the use of technical analysis, namely, a moving-average technique, to improve upon a buy-and-hold investment strategy during financial bubbles. Econometric techniques can identify financial bubbles in real time, and these techniques successfully identify commonly acknowledged bubbles in the US stock market. The authors find that technical analysis significantly improves investment returns over a buy-and-hold strategy during three of the five financial bubbles since 1928 and performs identically in the other two. The authors also demonstrate similar results using three international markets. 44. Effects of alternative crop-livestock management scenarios on selected ecosystem services in smallholder farming – a landscape perspective

Abstract

Smallholder farming systems in southern Africa are characterized by low-input management and integrated livestock and crop production. Low yields and dry-season feed shortages are common. To meet growing food demands, sustainable intensification (SI) of these systems is an important policy goal. While mixed crop-livestock farming may offer greater productivity, it implies trade-offs between feed supply, soil nutrient replenishment, soil carbon accumulation, and other ecosystem functions and services. Such settings require a detailed systems understanding to assess the performance of prevalent management practices and identify potential SI strategies. Models can evaluate different management scenarios on extensive spatio-temporal scales and help identify suitable management strategies. Here, we linked the process-based models APSIM for cropland and aDGVM2 for rangeland to investigate the effects of (i) current management practices, (ii) a SI scenario for crop production, and (iii) a scenario with separated rangeland and cropland management in two representative villages of the Limpopo province, South Africa, for the period 2000–2010. Village surveys informed the models of farming practices, livelihood conditions, and environmental circumstances. We found that modest SI measures (manure application, small fertilizer quantities, weeding, crop rotation) led to moderate yield increases but could cause increased water limitation effects in dry years. SI effects therefore strongly varied between years. Dry-season crop residue grazing substantially reduced feed deficits, but could not compensate severe feed deficits during the transition period from dry to wet season. Targeted irrigation or measures to improve water retention and soil water holding capacity may enhance SI efforts. Off-field residue feeding during the dry-to-wet season transition could further reduce feed deficits and reduce grazing pressure on rangeland during the early growing season. We argue that integrative modeling frameworks are needed to evaluate landscape-level interactions between ecosystem components, evaluate the climate resilience of landscape-level ecosystem services, and identify effective mitigation and adaptation strategies.
