Search

This Report summarises the activities of the "SM and Higgs" working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. On the one hand, we performed a variety of experimental and theoretical studies on standard candles (such as W, Z, and ttbar production), treating them either as proper signals of known physics, or as backgrounds to unknown physics; we also addressed issues relevant to those non-perturbative or semi-perturbative ingredients, such as Parton Density Functions and Underlying Events, whose understanding will be crucial for a proper simulation of the actual events taking place in the detectors. On the other hand, several channels for the production of the Higgs, or involving the Higgs, have been considered in some detail. The report is structured into four main parts. The first one deals with Standard Model physics, except the Higgs. A variety of arguments are treated here, from full simulation of processes constituting a background to Higgs production, to studies of uncertainties due to PDFs and to extrapolations of models for underlying events, from small-$x$ issues to electroweak corrections which may play a role in vector boson physics. The second part of the report treats Higgs physics from the point of view of the signal. In the third part, reviews are presented on the current status of multi-leg, next-to-leading order and of next-to-next-to-leading order QCD computations. Finally, the fourth part deals with the use of Monte Carlos for simulation of LHC physics., Comment: 234 pages, 173 figures. We calculate the production of a W boson and a single b jet to next-to-leading order in QCD at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Both exclusive and inclusive cross sections are presented. We separately consider the cross section for jets containing a single b quark and jets containing a b-anti b pair. There are a wide variety of processes that contribute, and it is necessary to include them all in order to have a complete description at both colliders., Comment: LaTeX, 16 pages, 22 postscript figures; version published in Phys. The top quark and electroweak bosons (W and Z) represent the most massive fundamental particles yet discovered, and as such refer directly to the Standard Model's greatest remaining mystery: the mechanism by which all particles gained mass. This report summarizes the work done within the top-ew group of the Tevatron-for-LHC workshop. It represents a collection of both Tevatron results, and LHC predictions. The hope is that by considering and comparing both machines, the LHC program can be improved and aided by knowledge from the Tevatron, and that particle physics as a whole can be enriched. The search for Higgs bosons in both the standard model and its extensions is well under way at the Tevatron. As the integrated luminosity collected increases into the multiple inverse femptobarn range, these searches are becoming very interesting indeed. Meanwhile, the construction of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and its associated experiments at CERN are nearing completion. In this TeV4LHC workshop, it was realized that any experience at the Tevatron with respect to backgrounds, experimental techniques and theoretical calculations that can be verified at the Tevatron which have relevance for future measurements at the LHC were important. Studies and contributions to these efforts were made in three broad categories: theoretical calculations of Higgs production and decay mechanisms; theoretical calculations and discussions pertaining to non-standard model Higgs bosons; and experimental reviews, analyses and developments at both the Tevatron and the upcoming LHC experiments. The production of a W boson and two jets, at least one of which contains a b quark, is a principal background to single-top production, Higgs production, and signals of new physics at hadron colliders. We present a next-to-leading-order (NLO) calculation of the cross section at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We present results for the SM and MSSM Higgs-boson production cross sections at the Tevatron and the LHC. The SM cross sections are a compilation of the state-of-the-art theoretical predictions. The MSSM cross sections are obtained from the SM ones by means of an effective coupling approximation, as implemented in FeynHiggs. We study the trinified model, SU(3)_C x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R x Z_3, with the minimal Higgs sector required for symmetry breaking. There are five Higgs doublets, and gauge-coupling unification results if all five are at the weak scale, without supersymmetry. The radiative see-saw mechanism yields sub-eV neutrino masses, without the need for intermediate scales, additional Higgs fields, or higher-dimensional operators. The proton lifetime is above the experimental limits, with the decay modes p -> \bar\nu K^+ and p -> \mu^+ K^0 potentially observable. We also consider supersymmetric versions of the model, with one or two Higgs doublets at the weak scale. The radiative see-saw mechanism fails with weak-scale supersymmetry due to the nonrenormalization of the superpotential, but operates in the split-SUSY scenario., Comment: 23 pages, uses axodraw

We present a next-to-leading-order calculation of the production of a Z boson with two jets, one or more of which contains a heavy quark (Q=c,b). We show that the cross section with only one heavy-quark jet is larger than that with two heavy-quark jets at both the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN LHC. These processes are the dominant irreducible backgrounds to a Higgs boson produced in association with a Z boson, followed by h->bb. Our calculation makes use of a heavy-quark distribution function, which resums collinear logarithms and makes the next-to-leading-order calculation tractable., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures. We use an effective-field-theory approach to construct models with naturally light sterile neutrinos, due to either exact or accidental global symmetries. The most attractive models we find are based on gauge symmetries, either discrete or continuous. Theoretical progress in Higgs boson production and background processes is discussed with particular emphasis on QCD corrections at and beyond next-to-leading order as well as next-to-leading order electroweak corrections. The residual theoretical uncertainties of the investigated processes are estimated in detail. Moreover, recent investigations of the MSSM Higgs sector and other extensions of the SM Higgs sector are presented. In the Standard Model, the coupling of the Higgs boson to b quarks is weak, leading to small cross sections for producing a Higgs boson in association with b quarks. However, Higgs bosons with enhanced couplings to b quarks, such as occur in supersymmetric models for large values of tan beta, will be copiously produced at both the Tevatron and the LHC in association with b quarks, which will be an important discovery channel. We investigate the connections between the production channels, bg -> bh and gg ->b bbar h, at next-to-leading order (NLO) in perturbative QCD and present results for the cases with two high p_T b jets and with one high p_T b jet at both the Tevatron the the LHC. The leading-order process for the production of a Z boson and a heavy-quark jet at hadron colliders is gQ -> ZQ (Q=c,b). We calculate this cross section at next-to-leading order at the Tevatron and the LHC, and compare it with other sources of ZQ events. We propose that quarks and leptons are interchangeable entities in the high-energy limit. This naturally results in the extension of [SU(3)]^3 trinification to [SU(3)]^4 quartification. In addition to the unbroken color SU(3)_q of quarks, there is now also a color SU(3)_l of leptons which reduces to an unbroken SU(2)_l. We discuss the natural occurrence of SU(2)_l doublets at the TeV energy scale, which leads remarkably to the unification of all gauge couplings without supersymmetry. I describe the surrounding landscape on the road to the CERN Large Hadron Collider. I revisit the milestones of hadron-collider physics, and from them draw lessons for the future. I recall the primary motivation for the journey - understanding the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking - and speculate that even greater discoveries may await us. I review the physics that we know beyond the standard model - dark matter, dark energy, and neutrino masses - and discuss the status of grand-unified theories. Gauge-coupling unification is just as successful in the standard model with six Higgs doublets as it is in the minimal supersymmetric standard model. However, the gauge couplings unify at 10^14 GeV, which yields rapid proton decay in the SU(5) model. I propose that the grand-unified gauge group is instead SU(3)_c x SU(3)_L x SU(3)_R, in which baryon number is conserved by the gauge interactions., Comment: 8 pages, 1 figure. Higgs bosons with enhanced coupling to bottom quarks are copiously produced at hadron colliders via b\bar{b} -> h, where the initial b quarks reside in the proton sea. We revisit the calculation of the next-to-leading-order cross section for this process and argue that the appropriate factorization scale for the b distribution functions is approximately m_h/4, rather than m_h, as had been previously assumed. This greatly improves the convergence of the perturbation series, and yields a result with mild factorization-scale dependence. We also show that the leading-order calculation of gg -> b\bar{b}h, integrated over the momenta of the final-state particles, is very sensitive to the factorization and renormalization scales. For scales of order m_h/4 the gg -> b\bar{b}h cross section is comparable to that of b\bar{b} -> h, in contrast to the order-of-magnitude discrepancy between these two calculations for the scale m_h. The top quark is one of the least well-studied components of the standard model. In these lectures I discuss the expected properties of the top quark, which will be tested at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. I begin with a modern review of the standard model, emphasizing the underlying concepts. I then discuss the role the top quark plays in precision electroweak analyses. The last two lectures address the strong and weak interactions of the top quark, with an emphasis on the top-quark spin., Comment: 41 pages. We introduce a new color decomposition for multi-parton amplitudes in QCD, free of fundamental-representation matrices and structure constants. This decomposition has a physical interpretation in terms of the flow of color, which makes it ideal for merging with shower Monte-Carlo programs. The color-flow decomposition allows for very efficient evaluation of amplitudes with many quarks and gluons, many times faster than the standard color decomposition based on fundamental-representation matrices. This will increase the speed of event generators for multi-jet processes, which are the principal backgrounds to signals of new physics at colliders., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, version to appear on Phys. Higgs bosons from an extended Higgs sector, such as a two-Higgs-doublet model, can have greatly enhanced coupling to the bottom quark. Producing such a Higgs boson in association with a single high-p_T bottom quark via g b -> h b allows for the suppression of backgrounds. Previous studies have instead used g g,qbar q -> bbar b h as the production mechanism, which is valid only if both b quarks are at high p_T. We calculate g b -> h b at next-to-leading order in QCD, and find that it is an order of magnitude larger than g g,qbar q -> bbar b h at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This production mechanism improves the prospects for the discovery of a Higgs boson with enhanced coupling to the b quark., Comment: 24 pages, 11 figures

We study the signal and background for the process tth, h->WW at the LHC and a 100 TeV VLHC. Signals are studied in two-, three-, and four-lepton final states. We find a statistical uncertainty in the top-quark Yukawa coupling at the LHC of 16%, 8%, 12% for m_h = 130, 160, 190 GeV, respectively. The statistical uncertainty at the VLHC is likely to be negligible in comparison with the systematic uncertainty., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

We study the production of the Higgs boson in association with a single top quark at hadron colliders. The cross sections for the three production processes (t-channel, s-channel, and W-associated) at both the Tevatron and the LHC are presented. We investigate the possibility of detecting a signal for the largest of these processes, the t-channel process at the LHC, via the Higgs decay into b b-bar. The QCD backgrounds are large and difficult to curb, hindering the extraction of the signal. Extensions of our analysis to the production of supersymmetric Higgs bosons are also addressed. The cross section is enhanced for large values of tangent beta, increasing the prospects for extracting a signal., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures

Unitarity of longitudinal weak vector boson scattering implies an upper bound on the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking, $\Lambda_{EWSB}\equiv \sqrt{8\pi}v\approx$ 1 TeV. Appelquist and Chanowitz have derived an analogous upper bound on the scale of fermion mass generation, proportional to $v^2/m_f$, by considering the scattering of same-helicity fermions into pairs of longitudinal weak vector bosons in a theory without a standard Higgs boson. We show that there is no upper bound, beyond that on the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking, in such a theory. This result is obtained by considering the same process, but with a large number of longitudinal weak vector bosons in the final state. We further argue that there is no scale of (Dirac) fermion mass generation in the standard model. In contrast, there is an upper bound on the scale of Majorana-neutrino mass generation, given by $\Lambda_{Maj}\equiv 4\pi v^2/m_\nu$. In general, the upper bound on the scale of fermion mass generation depends on the dimensionality of the interaction responsible for generating the fermion mass. We explore the scale of fermion mass generation in a variety of excursions from the standard model: models with fermions in nonstandard representations, a theory with higher-dimension interactions, a two-Higgs-doublet model, and models without a Higgs boson., Comment: 31 pages, 9 figures; version accepted for publication in Phys. The top quark, discovered at the Fermilab Tevatron collider in 1995, is the heaviest known elementary particle. Its large mass suggests that it may play a special role in nature. It behaves differently from the other known quarks due both to its large mass and its short lifetime. Thus far we have only crude measurements of the properties of the top quark, such as its mass, weak interactions, strong interactions, and decay modes. These measurements will be made more precise when the Tevatron begins operation again in 2001. We derive a model-independent upper bound on the scale of Majorana-neutrino mass generation. The upper bound is $4\pi v^2/\sqrt 3 m_\nu$, where $v \simeq 246$ GeV is the weak scale and $m_\nu$ is the Majorana neutrino mass. We argue that the leading-order subprocess for Higgs-boson production in association with bottom quarks is (b\bar{b} -> H). This process is an important source of Higgs bosons with enhanced Yukawa coupling to bottom quarks. Single-top-quark production probes the charged-current weak interaction of the top quark, and provides a direct measurement of the CKM matrix element V_{tb}. We perform two independent analyses to quantify the accuracy with which the W-gluon fusion (gq -> t\bar{b}q) and (q\bar{q} -> t\bar{b}) signals can be extracted from the backgrounds at both the Tevatron and the LHC. Although perturbation theory breaks down at low transverse momentum for the W-gluon fusion \bar{b} differential cross section, we show how to obtain a reliable cross section integrated over low \bar{b} transverse momenta up to a cutoff. We estimate the accuracy with which V_{tb} can be measured in both analyses, including theoretical and statistical uncertainties. We study the upper bound on the scale of fermion mass generation in a two-Higgs-doublet model. If the model is weakly-coupled, the scale of fermion mass generation is much less than the Appelquist-Chanowitz unitarity bound. However, if we allow some dimensionless Higgs self-couplings to become large, the Appelquist-Chanowitz unitarity bound can be saturated. The unitarity bound on the scale of top-quark mass generation is about 3 TeV, which may be within the reach of future colliders., Comment: 8 pages, LateX, 2 postscript files included. The pole mass of a heavy quark is ambiguous by an amount of order $\Lambda_{QCD}$. We show that the heavy-quark potential, $V(r)$, is similarly ambiguous, but that the total static energy, $2M_{pole}+V(r)$, is unambiguous when expressed in terms of a short-distance mass. This implies that the extraction of a short-distance mass from the quarkonium spectrum is free of an ambiguity of order $\Lambda_{QCD}$, in contrast with the pole mass., Comment: 6 pages, LateX. The hypercharges of the fermions are not uniquely determined in SO(10) grand unification, but rather depend upon which linear combination of the two U(1) subgroups of SO(10) > SU(3) X SU(2) X U(1) X U(1) remains unbroken. We show that, in general, a given hypercharge assignment can be obtained only with very high-dimensional Higgs representations. The observation that the standard model is obtained with low-dimensional Higgs representations can therefore be regarded as further evidence for SO(10) grand unification. This evidence is independent of the fact that SO(10) > SU(5)., Comment: 6 pages, LateX

We show that the perturbation series for quarkonia energies diverges at large orders. This results in a perturbative ambiguity in the energy that scales as e^(-1/a*Lambda) where a is the Bohr radius of quarkonium and Lambda is the QCD scale parameter. This ambiguity is associated with a nonperturbative contribution to the energy from distances of order 1/Lambda and greater. This contribution is separate from that of the gluon condensate., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Single-top-quark production via W-gluon fusion at hadron colliders provides an opportunity to directly probe the charged-current interaction of the top quark. We calculate the next-to-leading-order corrections to this process at the Fermilab Tevatron, the CERN Large Hadron Collider, and DESY HERA. Using a b-quark distribution function to sum collinear logarithms, we show that there are two independent corrections, of order 1/[ln(m_t^2/m_b^2)] and alpha_s. This observation is generic to processes involving a perturbatively derived heavy-quark distribution function at an energy scale large compared with the heavy-quark mass., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, small update to Phys. ``Weakly-coupled'' and ``strongly-coupled'' models of electroweak symmetry breaking are introduced by analogy with the Fermi theory of the weak interaction and the low-energy interaction of pions, respectively. We propose techniques to observe the correlation of the spins of top quarks and antiquarks at the Tevatron and the LHC. Observation of the spin correlation would confirm that the top quark decays before its spin flips, and would place a lower bound on the top-quark width and V_tb. We consider single-top-quark production via the weak process $q\bar q to t\bar b$ at hadron colliders. This process may provide the best measurement of the magnitude of the Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{tb}$. We show that a signal can potentially be observed at the Fermilab Tevatron with 3 $fb^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. In contrast, the signal is masked at the CERN Large Hadron Collider by top-quark pair production and single-top-quark production via $W$-gluon fusion., Comment: 12 pages latex + 5 uuencoded figures

We study meson decays mediated by the heavy gauge bosons of the Pati-Salam model of quark-lepton unification. We consider the scenarios in which the tau lepton is associated with the third, second, and first generation of quarks. Higgs bosons which decay principally to top quarks, such as in the minimal supersymmetric model, produce a peak-dip structure in the $gg\to t\bar t$ invariant-mass spectrum. This structure is potentially observable at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We consider the search for the Higgs boson at a high-luminosity Fermilab Tevatron, an upgraded Tevatron of energy 3.5 TeV, and the CERN Large Hadron Collider, via $WH/ZH$ production followed by H -> bb~ and leptonic decay of the weak vector bosons. We show that each of these colliders can potentially observe the standard Higgs boson in the intermediate-mass range, 80 GeV \gamma\gamma at the LHC.
