We discuss impurities in a trapped one-dimensional Bose gas with arbitrary boson-boson and boson-impurity interactions. To fully account for quantum effects, in particular in the regime of strong boson-boson interactions, we employ numerical simulations based on the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and analytic approximations exploiting the mapping to weakly interacting fermions. Mobile impurities in a box potential undergo a phase transition between a delocalized state and a solution localized at one of the potential edges upon increasing the impurity-boson interaction. While a mean-field ansatz based on coupled Gross-Pitaevski -- Schr\"odinger equations gives reasonable predictions of this transition, it also predicts the existence of a self-localized polaron solution, which we show to be an artifact of the underlying decoupling approximation. This demonstrates that impurity-boson correlations are important even in the limit of weak boson-boson interactions, where mean-field approaches are expected to work well. Furthermore we calculate the energy of a single polaron formed by a heavy impurity for arbitrary interaction strengths and give analytical approximations for large but finite boson-boson couplings. Finally we numerically determine the polaron-polaron interaction potential in Born-Oppenheimer approximation, which in the Tonks gas limit is oscillatory due to Friedel oscillations in the Bose gas.

The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. We discuss the dynamics of the formation of a Bose polaron when an impurity is injected into a weakly interacting one-dimensional Bose condensate. While for small impurity-boson couplings this process can be described within the Froehlich model as generation, emission and binding of Bogoliubov phonons, this is no longer adequate if the coupling becomes strong. To treat this regime we consider a mean-field approach beyond the Froehlich model which accounts for the backaction to the condensate, complemented with Truncated Wigner simulations to include quantum fluctuation. For the stationary polaron we find an energy-momentum relation that displays a smooth crossover from a convex to a concave dependence associated with a non-monotonous relation between impurity velocity and polaron momentum. For larger momenta the energy is a periodic function including regions of negative impurity velocity. Studying the polaron formation after turning on the impurity-boson coupling quasi adiabatically and in a sudden quench, we find a very rich scenario of dynamical regimes. Due to the build-up of an effective mass, the impurity is slowed down even if its initial velocity is below the Landau critical value. For larger initial velocities we find deceleration and even backscattering caused by emission of density waves or grey solitons and subsequent formation of stationary polaron states in different momentum sectors. In order to analyze the effect of quantum fluctuations we consider a trapped condensate to avoid 1D infrared divergencies. Context. We are operating an elastic LIDAR for the monitoring of atmospheric conditions during regular observations of the MAGIC Telescopes. Aims. We present and evaluate methods to convert aerosol extinction profiles, obtained with the LIDAR, into corrections of the reconstructed gamma-ray event energy and Instrument Response Functions of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. Methods. We assess the performance of these correction schemes with almost seven years of Crab Nebula data taken by the MAGIC Telescopes under various zenith angles and different aerosol extinction scenarios of Cherenkov light. Results. The methods enable the reconstruction of data taken under non-optimal atmospheric conditions with aerosol transmissions down to around 0.65 with systematic uncertainties comparable to those for data taken under optimal conditions. For the first time, the correction of data affected by clouds has been included in the assessment. We propose and analyze a protocol to create and control the superfluid flow in a one dimensional, weakly interacting Bose gas by noisy point contacts coupled to the density of the bosons. Considering first a single contact in a static or moving condensate, we identify three different dynamical phases: I. a linear response regime, where the noise induces a coherent flow in proportion to the strength of the noise accompanied by a counterflow of the normal component of the gas, II. a Zeno regime with suppressed currents and negative differential current to noise characteristics, and III. for a non-vanishing relative velocity, a regime of continuous soliton emission. The velocity of the condensate at the dissipative impurity determines the threshold for Zeno suppression of the current through the point contact, and the onset of the non-stationary regime of soliton "shooting" from the defect. Generalizing to two point contacts in a condensate at rest we show that noise tuning can be employed to control, stabilize or eventually shunt the superfluid transport of particles along the segment which connects them, with perspectives for an atomtronic analogue of a superfluid-current source for studying quantum transport phenomena., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

We present a new elastic LIDAR concept, based on a bi-axially mounted Nd:YAG laser and a telescope with HPD readout, combined with fast FADC signal digitization and offline pulse analysis. The LIDAR return signals have been extensively quality checked and absolutely calibrated. We analyze seven years of quasi-continuous LIDAR data taken during those nights when the MAGIC telescopes were operating. Characterization of the nocturnal ground layer yields zenith and azimuth angle dependent aerosol extinction scale heights for clear nights. We derive aerosol transmission statistics for light emitted from various altitudes throughout the year and separated by seasons. We find further seasonal dependencies of cloud base and top altitudes, but none for the LIDAR ratios of clouds. Bose polarons, quasi-particles composed of mobile impurities surrounded by cold Bose gas, can experience strong interactions mediated by the many-body environment and form bipolaron bound states. Here we present a detailed study of heavy polarons in a one-dimensional Bose gas by formulating a non-perturbative theory and complementing it with exact numerical simulations. We develop an analytic approach for weak boson-boson interactions and arbitrarily strong impurity-boson couplings. Our approach is based on a mean-field theory that accounts for deformations of the superfluid by the impurities and in this way minimizes quantum fluctuations. The mean-field equations are solved exactly in Born-Oppenheimer (BO) approximation leading to an analytic expression for the interaction potential of heavy polarons which is found to be in excellent agreement with quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) results. In the strong-coupling limit the potential substantially deviates from the exponential form valid for weak coupling and has a linear shape at short distances. Taking into account the leading-order Born-Huang corrections we calculate bipolaron binding energies for impurity-boson mass ratios as low as 3 and find excellent agreement with QMC results.

We study experimentally the dissipative dynamics of ultracold bosonic gases in a dynamic disorder potential with tunable correlation time. First, we measure the heating rate of thermal clouds exposed to the dynamic potential and present a model of the heating process, revealing the microscopic origin of dissipation from a thermal, trapped cloud of bosons. Second, for Bose-Einstein condensates, we measure the particle loss rate induced by the dynamic environment. Depending on the correlation time, the losses are either dominated by heating of residual thermal particles or the creation of excitations in the superfluid, a notion we substantiate with a rate model. Our results illuminate the interplay between superfluidity and time-dependent disorder and on more general grounds establish ultracold atoms as a platform for studying spatiotemporal noise and time-dependent disorder., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

We discuss the interaction of a quantum impurity with a one-dimensional degenerate Bose gas forming a Bose-polaron. In three spatial dimensions the quasiparticle is typically well described by the extended Fr\"ohlich model, in full analogy with the solid-state counterpart. This description, which assumes an undepleted condensate, fails however in 1D, where the backaction of the impurity on the condensate leads to a self-bound mean-field polaron for arbitrarily weak impurity-boson interactions. We present a model that takes into account this backaction and describes the impurity-condensate interaction as coupling to phonon-like excitations of a deformed condensate. A comparison of polaron energies and masses to diffusion quantum Monte-Carlo simulations shows very good agreement already on the level of analytical mean-field solutions and is further improved when taking into account quantum fluctuations.

Advanced knowledge of the detailed atmospheric properties of both the future sites of the Cherenkov Telescope Array is essential in preparation of the arrival of the first scientific data. Meteorological variables are studied using a dedicated characterization station installed at the southern site in Chile and a wealth of data from existing observatories around the northern site on the La Palma island. Campaigns using radiosondes launched on balloons are foreseen to complement these data in the near future. Cloudiness during the night has been continuously monitored at both sites for several years using All-sky Cameras which assess the presence of clouds based on detection of stars. The integrated aerosol optical depth over the southern site has been measured using a Sun/Moon Photometer since 2016 and the small robotic FRAM telescope since 2017; identical instruments have been deployed at the northern site in autumn 2018. Also in October 2018, the ARCADE Raman lidar (RL) has started to take measurements on routine basis at the northern site, providing data on the vertical profile of the aerosol optical properties (i.e., extinction and scattering) and of the water vapour mixing ratio. The mirrors installed on Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes like the MAGIC telescopes in La Palma, Canary Islands, are constantly exposed to the harsh environment. They have to withstand wind-induced corrosion from dust and sand, changing temperatures, and rain. Because of the size of the telescope, protecting the structure with a dome is not practical. The current mirrors used in MAGIC are aluminum front-coated glass mirrors, covered by a thin quartz layer. But even with this protective layer, significant decrease in reflectivity can be seen on timescales of several years. The quartz layer is very delicate and can be easily scratched or damaged, which also makes cleaning the mirrors almost impossible. We have tested a novel design of glass mirrors that can be easily cleaned and should show almost no degradation in reflectivity due to environmental influences. The protective layer is a ultra-thin glass sheet which is back-coated with aluminum, making it possible to simply wipe the mirror with household cleaning tools. In this contribution we will present results from laboratory tests of reflectivity and focusing properties of prototype mirrors, as well as long-term tests on-site at the MAGIC telescopes. We will also outline plans for exchanging a large fraction of MAGIC mirrors with this novel design, guaranteeing a peak performance of MAGIC for the coming years., Comment: Proceedings of the ICRC 2019

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are one of the main targets for current and next generation Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs). Given their transient behavior, especially in the case of their prompt emission phase, performing fast follow-up observations is challenging for IACTs, which have a narrow field of view and limited duty cycle. Despite this, MAGIC plays a major role in the search for Very High Energy (VHE, E>100 GeV) gamma-ray emission from GRBs: this is possible thanks to its fast repositioning speed, low energy threshold and high sensitivity at the lowest energies. In 2013 the MAGIC GRB automatic procedure was upgraded, increasing the number of GRBs followed in the prompt and early afterglow phases and decreasing dramatically hardware failures during fast repositioning. Currently, only GRB 190114C was firmly detected in the VHE band, while for other GRBs no significant detection was achieved. In such a case, upper limits (ULs) can give insight into the physics driving such eluding sources, especially on their emission mechanisms. In this contribution we report on the status of the GRB follow-up with MAGIC and focus on the ULs and results obtained from a sample of GRBs observed between 2013 and 2018. Several classes of sources are known to emit different messengers. Among them, transient sources are a special case, due to their serendipitous occurrence, time variability and duration on different timescales. They are associated with explosive and catastrophic events where very compact objects like neutron stars and black holes are involved. The difficulty of observing such elusive and possibly short-lasting events requires a fast reaction and a well-organized alert network between different experiments. In order to characterize them in the best possible way, instruments with a wide field of view should serve as external triggers for facilities with small sky coverage. MAGIC, as a Cherenkov telescope, belongs to the latter category. The search for transients by MAGIC is possible thanks to an automatic alert system listening to the alerts sent by the Gamma-ray Coordinate Network (GCN). In this contribution we describe the MAGIC alert system, which was designed mainly for the follow-up of Gamma-Ray Bursts in its initial conception. The alert system was recently updated in a multi-messenger context, receiving alerts also from neutrino and GW observatories. The pointing system of the prototype of the Large Size Telescope (LST-1) for the Cherenkov Telescope Array observatory, should ensure mapping of the gamma-ray image of a point-like source in the Cherenkov camera to the sky coordinates with a precision better than 14 arcseconds. Detailed studies of the telescope deformations are performed in order to disentangle different deformations and quantify their contributions to the miss-pointing, to learn how to correct for them, and finally how to design the system for offline and online pointing corrections. The LST-1 pointing precision system consist of several devices mounted at the center of the dish: Starguider Camera (SG), Camera Displacement Monitor (CDM), two inclinometers, four distance meters, and an Optical Axis Reference Laser (OARL), working together with the LEDs mounted in a circle around the Cherenkov camera. The online pointing corrections are based on a bending model as currently done by existing IACTs. The offline corrections will be performed combining measurements done by the SG and CDM cameras. SG will provide the position of the Cherenkov camera center with respect to the sky coordinates with a precision of 5 arcseconds, while CDM will provide the deviation of the telescope optical axis defined by the OARL spots with respect to the Cherenkov camera center with a precision better than 5 arcseconds. Laboratory measurements on dedicated test benches showed that the required pointing precision can be achieved for SG, CDM and inclinometer.

We discuss the rotational cooling of diatomic molecules in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of ultra-cold atoms by emission of phonons with orbital angular momentum. Despite the superfluidity of the BEC there is no frictionless rotation for typical molecules since the dominant cooling occurs via emission of particle-like phonons. Only for macro-dimers, whose size becomes comparable or larger than the condensate healing length, a Landau-like, critical angular momentum exists below which phonon emission is suppressed. We find that the rotational relaxation of typical molecules is in general faster than the cooling of the linear motion of impurities in a BEC. This also leads to a finite lifetime of angulons, quasi-particles of rotating molecules coupled to phonons with orbital angular-momentum. We analyze the dynamics of rotational cooling for homo-nuclear diatomic molecules based on a quantum Boltzmann equation including single- and two-phonon scattering and discuss the effect of thermal phonons., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures
