Abstract

Purpose: This work proposes a novel RF pulse design for parallel transmit (pTx) systems to obtain uniform saturation of semisolid magnetization for Magnetization Transfer (MT) contrast in the presence of transmit field ($B_1^+$) inhomogeneities. The semisolid magnetization is usually modeled as being purely longitudinal, with the applied $B_1^+$ field saturating but not rotating its magnetization, thus standard pTx pulse design methods do not apply. Theory and Methods: Pulse design for Saturation Homogeneity (PUSH) optimizes pTx RF pulses by considering uniformity of root-mean squared $B_1^+$, $B_1^{rms}$, which relates to the rate of semisolid saturation. Here we considered designs consisting of a small number of spatially non-selective sub-pulses optimized over either a single 2D plane or 3D. Simulations and in vivo experiments on a 7T Terra system with an 8-TX Nova head coil in 5 subjects were carried out to study the homogenization of $B_1^{rms}$ and of the MT contrast by acquiring MT ratio maps. Results: Simulations and in vivo experiments showed up to 6 and 2 times more uniform $B_1^{rms}$ compared to circular polarized (CP) mode for 2D and 3D optimizations, respectively. This translated into 4 and 1.25 times more uniform MT contrast, consistently for all subjects, where 2 sub-pulses were enough for the implementation and coil used. Conclusion: The proposed PUSH method obtains more uniform and higher MT contrast than CP mode within the same SAR budget., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. 9. Youth movements and mobilisations in post-colonial India, circa 1930-1970

Abstract

Indian historians have examined colonial childhoods and the role of youth movements in anti-colonial politics, but the history of the Indian youth in the post-colonial period is almost entirely unexplored. This PhD thesis examines the history of youth movements and mobilisations in India during the early post-colonial period. Young people had previously been energetic players in the freedom struggle and the powerful association between the youth and the nation was not new, although the realisation of a post-colonial state gave politicians, policy makers, and social leaders the levers of power to organise a novel and state-sponsored youth order. The enormity of this demographic group, the tremendous future role assigned to them, and their supposed state of indiscipline meant that the Indian youth became the object of renewed political and cultural interest in the decades following independence. The need to organise a mass movement for the country's future citizenry became understood throughout the layers of the Government of India. This logic held that the volunteer movements of the colonial era could now only touch the fringes of India's "youth problem" and it was accepted that the newly independent state must accept overall responsibility for the organisation of the national youth movement. This PhD traces the origins, growth, and consequences of these state-sponsored movements, including the National Cadet Corps, the Labour and Social Service Camps, the Bharat Sevak Samaj, the Bharat Scouts and Guides, the Youth Hostel Association of India, the Interuniversity Youth Festival, and the University Film Club. I will also explore the political protests and responses of two communist youth movements, and look at the way the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s unfolded in India from the perspective of the All-India Student Federation and the All-India Youth Federation. This PhD will analyse how colonial conceptions of the Indian youth were adapted and repudiated during the early post-colonial period by referring to the final phase of the colonial era, and how the shifting notion of "youth" had a profound effect on the building of the nation-state at large. It will be organised according to five themes - defence, development, social service, leisure, and student politics - which will allow us to explore the processes of growing up and the way the rich idealisations of youth became embedded in political discourses. There are five arguments that this PhD thesis will advance. Firstly, the undisciplined youth is key to understanding the 1950s and 1960s in India. Politicians, officials, academics, youth leaders, and journalists developed and spread a discourse that imagined the collective behaviour of Indian youths as falling well below what was expected of them. Secondly, a state-organised youth sector emerged in the post-colonial period and its role as the bureaucratic guarantor of the provision of youth services increased during the period at hand. Government departments launched new youth movements and the Five-Year Plans sponsored mobilisations that sought to harness and channel the voluntary efforts of youths. The varied apparatus of the Government of India sought to coordinate and direct the post-colonial youth order, but these efforts did not amount to an attempt to take it over. Thirdly, these youth movements and mobilisations had a comprehensive nation-state building character. From the British Raj era Scouting movement to the Nehruvian era Bharat Sevak Samaj, the movements this PhD thesis explores represented an ongoing exercise in building national youth institutions that sought to tie future citizens to a nation-state identity. Fourthly, the unequal pathways of youthhood in independent India and the ways youths were included and excluded on a differentiated basis from these movements and mobilisations is illuminated. There was an uneven inclusion of the rural youth, women, and Dalits because their (more limited) participation was often accompanied by a patriarchal and patronising reproduction of their "traditional" roles in the official and popular discourses. Finally, this is a research project not only about Indian youth but also the larger questions of post-colonial internationalisms and the way that Indian youth movements were shaped by processes and relationships that transcended the borders of the nation-state. These youth movements and mobilisations sought to play a role, integrate themselves into, or draw upon, larger "post-imperial" or "neo-imperial" internationalisms.

11. The music of J.S. Bach and the evolution of Romantic aesthetics

Johann Nikolaus Forkel's 1802 biography of Bach portrays its subject as the ideal German composer: a progenitor of musical perfection towards whose standards contemporary mortals could only aspire. This retrospective elevation to God-like status, which captures the spirit of the Bach revival, demands explanation. What was the nature of the music's potent appeal in the first three decades of the nineteenth century? What led Bach to write such music - which was regarded by many of his contemporaries as old-fashioned, even eccentric - in the first place? In addressing these questions, this thesis examines the rapid rise in the status of music itself in the period 1700-1830. With reference to the rise of aesthetics and to hermeneutical theory (i.e. theory of interpretation), it explores the historical processes that led to music being regarded, by some in the Romantic age, as a medium of transcendent significance. The underlying thread of my historical analysis is the 'critical' shift in the locus of 'meaning,' from object to subject. It is this migration that underpins my consideration of the nineteenth-century reassessment of Bach's music. Bach may well have conceived his music in objective terms, perhaps as a kind of homage to the purported unity of creation. When heard 'Romantically,' I argue, the music could accrue a new, subjective significance, as an inculcator of an 'experiential' form of the unity it had been intended merely to imitate. Hermeneutical theory is principally relevant to this thesis as a window onto the evolving attitudes towards interpretation in the period 1700-1830. However, owing to its traditional association with biblical exegesis, it also serves as a useful prism by which to consider this period in broader historical context. Famously, Martin Luther viewed biblical interpretation as the foundation of faith; this uncompromising vision was gradually undermined during the early-modern age. Ultimately, I argue that the avowedly Lutheran underpinnings of Bach's sacred music served to bolster its appeal, ironically enough, to the liberalized, subjectively focussed religious sensibilities of the early nineteenth century. This notion captures the image of Bach that I defend throughout this thesis: that of a composer whose conservative impulses led him to produce music of progressive communicative potential.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Serum prolactin levels may be elevated by venepuncture stress. We investigated the utility of a rested prolactin sample, obtained through an indwelling venous cannula, in preventing the overdiagnosis of hyperprolactinaemia. Methods: Patients at our institution undergo serial prolactin sampling, usually over 40 min, when investigating hyperprolactinaemia. We retrospectively reviewed all serial prolactin sampling performed during a 3‐year period. Patients with possible medication‐induced hyperprolactinaemia and macroprolactin interference were excluded. We assessed the effect of venepuncture‐associated stress on hyperprolactinaemia with the main outcome being normalisation of serum prolactin at the end of serial sampling. Results: Ninety‐three patients with documented hyperprolactinaemia (range 360–1690 mU/L) were included in the analysis. Prolactin decreased during serial sampling in 73 patients (78%), suggesting a prevalent effect of venepuncture stress. The final prolactin sample was normal in 50 patients (54%), consistent with stress hyperprolactinaemia rather than pathological hyperprolactinaemia. Patients with a referral prolactin result greater than two times the upper reference limit (URL) were less likely (15%) to have a normal prolactin result on serial sampling. Measurement of a single rested prolactin sample from an indwelling cannula showed the same diagnostic utility as serial sampling. Conclusion: Serum prolactin results are frequently elevated by the stress of venepuncture. Confirmation of pathological hyperprolactinaemia in a rested sample obtained from an indwelling venous cannula is recommended in patients with mild hyperprolactinaemia, particularly when the referral prolactin is less than two times the URL.
