1. Trends in COVID-19 testing, infection, vaccination, and housing assistance among people who inject drugs in Los Angeles and Denver.

Abstract

Introduction: We examined COVID-19 trends and the socio-structural correlates of infections and vaccinations among people who inject drugs (PWID). Methods: We collected retrospective survey data from PWID (n = 472). We examined changes in COVID-19 testing, infection, and housing assistance for the first year of the pandemic, and then used multivariate logistic regression to examine factors with ever having an infection and receiving at least one vaccination from April 2020-March 2021. Results: The sample was mostly male, White and Latinx, and unhoused. Testing by quarter ranged from 46% to 33%. Housing assistance declined from 10% to 7% by the last quarter, while infections ranged from 6% to 4%. Ever being COVID-19 positive was associated with being male, having an income source, and being arrested in the last 3 months. Almost half of participants reported vaccination (47%). Receiving a vaccination was associated with prior U.S. armed forces service, older age, receiving substance use disorder treatment, and having ever received COVID-19 testing. Discussion: Efforts to vaccinate PWID fell short and housing assistance declined. Receiving targeted assistance, including better access to housing and medication treatments for opioid use disorder, could be important efforts to mitigate the heightened risks of COVID-19 and the ongoing harms PWID face that predate the pandemic. Abstract

Quality Matters is recognized as a rigorous set of standards that guide the designer or instructor to design quality online courses. We explore how Quality Matters standards guide the identification and analysis of learning analytics data to monitor and improve online learning. Descriptive data were collected for frequency of use, time spent, and performance and analyzed to identify patterns and trends on how students interact with online course components based on the Quality Matters standards. Major findings of this article provide a framework and guidance for instructors on how data might be collected and analyzed to improve online learning effectiveness.

Abstract

Members of the Bacillus cereus group contain cell wall carbohydrates that vary in their glycosyl compositions. Recent multilocus sequence typing (MLST) refined the relatedness of B. cereus group members by separating them into clades and lineages. Based on MLST, we selected several B. anthracis, B. cereus, and B. thuringiensis strains and compared their cell wall carbohydrates. The cell walls of different B. anthracis strains (clade l/Anthracis) were composed of glucose (Glc), galactose (Gal), N-acetyl mannosamine (ManNAc), and Nacetylglucosamine (GlcNAc). In contrast, the cell walls from clade 2 strains (B. cereus type strain ATCC 14579 and B. thuringiensis strains) lacked Gal and contained N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc). The B. cereus clade 1 strains had cell walls that were similar in composition to B. anthracis in that they all contained Gal. However, the cell walls from some clade 1 strains also contained GalNAc, which was not present in B. anthracis cell walls. Three recently identified clade 1 strains of B. cereus that caused severe pneumonia, i.e., strains 03BB102, 03BB87, and G9241, had cell wall compositions that closely resembled those of the B. anthracis strains. It was also observed that B. anthracis strains cell wall glycosyl compositions differed from one another in a plasmid- dependent manner. When plasmid pXO2 was absent, the ManNAc/Gal ratio decreased, while the Glc/Gal ratio increased. Also, deletion of atxA, a global regulatory gene, from a pXO2- strain resulted in cell walls with an even greater level of Glc.

Abstract

Highlights • Electroencephalographic abnormalities are common in Africans with epilepsy, with an adjusted prevalence of 2.7 (95% confidence interval, 2.5–2.9) per 1000 population. • Electroencephalographic abnormalities are associated with preventable factors such as adverse perinatal events and frequent seizures. • Electroencephalography is helpful in identifying focal epilepsy in Africa, where timing of focal aetiologies is problematic and there is a lack of neuroimaging services., Objective We investigated the prevalence and pattern of electroencephalographic (EEG) features of epilepsy and the associated factors in Africans with active convulsive epilepsy (ACE). Methods We characterized electroencephalographic features and determined associated factors in a sample of people with ACE in five African sites. Mixed-effects modified Poisson regression model was used to determine factors associated with abnormal EEGs. Results Recordings were performed on 1426 people of whom 751 (53%) had abnormal EEGs, being an adjusted prevalence of 2.7 (95% confidence interval (95% CI), 2.5–2.9) per 1000. 52% of the abnormal EEG had focal features (75% with temporal lobe involvement). The frequency and pattern of changes differed with site. Abnormal EEGs were associated with adverse perinatal events (risk ratio (RR) = 1.19 (95% CI, 1.07–1.33)), cognitive impairments (RR = 1.50 (95% CI, 1.30–1.73)), use of anti-epileptic drugs (RR = 1.25 (95% CI, 1.05–1.49)), focal seizures (RR = 1.09 (95% CI, 1.00–1.19)) and seizure frequency (RR = 1.18 (95% CI, 1.10–1.26) for daily seizures; RR = 1.22 (95% CI, 1.10–1.35) for weekly seizures and RR = 1.15 (95% CI, 1.03–1.28) for monthly seizures)). Conclusions EEG abnormalities are common in Africans with epilepsy and are associated with preventable risk factors. Significance EEG is helpful in identifying focal epilepsy in Africa, where timing of focal aetiologies is problematic and there is a lack of neuroimaging services.
