2. Potential and risks of water reuse in Brandenburg (Germany) – an interdisciplinary case study

- Abstract
For Brandenburg, a region in Germany with increasing water shortage and drought events, water reuse can counteract competition scenarios between drinking water supply, agricultural irrigation, and industrial use. Centralized and decentralized sources for reclaimed water are found to potentially substitute 245 or 28% of irrigation water, respectively, in agriculture production in Brandenburg. For such a reuse scenario, the fate of organic micro-pollutants is examined for diatrizoate (DZA) and carbamazepine (CBZ). Retention in local sandy soil and transfer into roots and leaves of arugula are analyzed in lysimeter studies and greenhouse pot experiments. Vertical transport was found for DZA and accumulation in or on arugula roots with a root concentration factor of 1,925 ± 34% but a low bioconcentration factor due to intrinsic molecule properties. CBZ was not found to be mobile in the sandy soil but accumulates in arugula roots and leaves by factors of 70 ± 7% and 155 ± 12%, respectively. Further research on potential plant uptake and groundwater enrichment for more substances is highly recommended as well as tertiary wastewater treatment prior to water reuse.

3. Glass eel migration in an urbanized catchment: an integral bottleneck assessment using mark-recapture

- Abstract
Diadromous fish such as the European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) are hampered by a high density of barriers in estuaries and freshwater systems. Modified and fragmented waterbodies lack tidal flows, and habitat may be less accessible and underutilized compared to free-flowing rivers and estuaries. With rising sea levels and increased occurrence of droughts, the number of barriers may further increase, implying that the need to study migration in such areas may even become more urgent worldwide. To study glass eel migration and behaviour in such highly modified water systems, a mark-recapture study was carried out in the North Sea Canal (NSC) basin, which drains into the North Sea via a large sluice complex. In total, eight uniquely tagged groups (3,797 glass eels) were released near the sluice complex, and 11 groups (2,663 glass eels) were released at inland barriers upstream over a 28 km long stretch in the NSC in spring 2018. The sluice complex attracted 10.3 million glass eel and did not block or delay their immigration. The large and diurnally intensively used coastal ship locks and allowings some saltwater intrusion, efficiently facilitated glass eel migration. Once in the NSC, water outlets from adjacent polders attracted glass eels relative proportional to the discharge of pumping stations. In the NSC, average migration speeds of 0.7 km/day (max. 1.8 km/day) were measured, and this increased with higher temperatures. Redistribution of glass eel from accumulations at inland barriers to other outlet locations was observed in both upstream and downstream directions in the NSC. Passage success and residence time (‘delays’ of 4.1–13.7 days) varied between the different inland barriers. Most of the glass eel, however, appears to settle in the easily accessible habitats within the brackish NSC catchment. This study combined an integral assessment of successive bottlenecks in a modified inland water system.

Bagana is a remote, highly active volcano, located on Bougainville Island in southeastern Papua New Guinea. The volcano has exhibited sustained and prodigious sulfur dioxide gas emissions in recent decades, accompanied by frequent episodes of lava extrusion. The remote location of Bagana and its persistent activity have made it a valuable case study for satellite observations of active volcanism. This remoteness has also left many features of Bagana relatively unexplored. Here, we present the first measurements of volcanic gas composition, achieved by unoccupied aerial system (UAS) flights through the volcano's summit plume, and a payload comprising a miniaturized MultiGAS. We combine our measurements of the molar CO2/SO2 ratio in the plume with coincident remote sensing measurements (ground‐ and satellite‐based) of SO2 emission rate to compute the first estimate of CO2 flux at Bagana. We report low SO2 and CO2 fluxes at Bagana from our fieldwork in September 2019, ∼320 ± 76 td−1 and ∼320 ± 84 td−1, respectively, which we attribute to the volcano's low level of activity at the time of our visit. We use satellite observations to demonstrate that Bagana's activity and emissions behavior are highly variable and advance the argument that such variability is likely an inherent feature of many volcanoes worldwide and yet is inadequately captured by our extant volcanic gas inventories, which are often biased to sporadic measurements. We argue that there is great value in the use of UAS combined with MultiGAS‐type instruments for remote monitoring of gas emissions from other inaccessible volcanoes. Plain Language Summary: Bagana is a remote and highly active volcano in southeastern Papua New Guinea (PNG). Historically, it has been among the most active volcanoes in PNG, notable for its long‐lived eruptions and sustained gas emissions. Bagana has only been infrequently studied before now. We use unoccupied aerial systems (drones) along with ground‐ and satellite‐based remote sensing data to characterize the chemical composition and flux of Bagana's gas emissions and place these in the context of global volcanic emissions. Owing to low activity during the time of our fieldwork, we report lower than anticipated emissions of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide from Bagana. We argue that characterizing highly variable volcanic emissions is challenging without long‐term continuous observations and that, for remote volcanoes like Bagana, both drones and satellite observations are powerful tools to undertake these observations. The European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.) is an economic important species and is listed on the IUCN red list as critically endangered. Nonetheless, each year between late winter (February) and late spring (May) glass eels arrive at the various coastal areas attempting to migrate to freshwater habitat. As part of the statutory tasks (WOT) a yearly index of glass eels arriving at the sluices at Den Oever was created since 1938. The program consists of a monitoring with liftnets and traps and is commissioned by Wageningen Marine Research (WMR). In addition, WMR also equips glass eels with a Visible Implant Elastomer tag to determine abundance and differences in retention time between years since 2019 using (batch) mark- and recapture methods. However, effects of tagging in relation to predation risk are unknown. Tagged glass eels might have an increased risk for predation, which in turn would influence abundance and retention time estimates. This study aims to determine differences in predation risk when glass eels are equipped with a VIE tag and exposed to European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). Also, this study aims to determine the feasibility of stomach content analysis of predatory fish for future field studies on predation of glass eels near barriers. To answer both questions a laboratory experiment was conducted using marked (red and blue) and unmarked glass eels which were exposed to sea bass for a 2-hour trial. If at least one glass eel was eaten, stomach content was analyzed by a hand pump. 48% of the trials showed successful predation and 13% showed clear attempts of predation but failed to eat glass eels. The other sea bass (39%) waited significantly longer to show some activity, and they moved significantly less. The study showed that no differences in predation risk for marked glass eels by European sea bass. Also, no difference was found in predation between red and blue marked glass eels. We present results from a measurement of double diffraction dissociation in $\bar pp$ collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The production cross section for events with a central pseudorapidity gap of width $\Delta\eta^0>3$ (overlapping $\eta=0$) is found to be $4.43\pm 0.02{(stat)}{\pm 1.18}{(syst) mb}$ [$3.42\pm 0.01{(stat)}{\pm 1.09}{(syst) mb}$] at $\sqrt{s}=1800$ [630] GeV. Our results are compared with previous measurements and with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, using RevTeX. Submitted to Physical Review Letters

We report on measurements of differential cross sections dsigma/dp(T) for prompt charm meson production in p (p) over bar collisions at roots=1.96 TeV using 5.8+/-0.3 pb(-1) of data from the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. The data are collected with a new trigger that is sensitive to the long lifetime of hadrons containing heavy flavor. The charm meson cross sections are measured in the central rapidity region \y\less than or equal to1 in four fully reconstructed decay modes: D(0)-->K(-)pi(+), D(*+)-->D(0)pi(+), D(+)-->K(-)pi(+)pi(+), D(s)(+)-->phipi(+), and their charge conjugates. The measured cross sections are compared to theoretical calculations.

- Abstract
We report on a search for the flavor-changing neutral current decay D(0)-->mu(+)mu(-) in p (p) over bar collisions at roots=1.96 TeV using 65 pb(-1) of data collected by the CDF II experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. A displaced-track trigger selects long-lived D(0) candidates in the D(0)-->mu(+)mu(-) search channel, the kinematically similar D(0)-->pi(+)pi(-) channel used for normalization, the Cabibbo-favored D(0)-->K(-)pi(+) channel used to optimize the selection criteria in an unbiased manner, and their charge conjugates. Finding no signal events in the D(0)-->mu(+)mu(-) search window, we set an upper limit on the branching fraction B(D(0)-->mu(+)mu(-))less than or equal to2.5x10(-6) (3.3x10(-6)) at the 90% (95%) confidence level.

Parasitoid Wasp Genomes Parasitoid wasps, which prey on and reproduce in host insect species, play important roles in plant herbivore interactions, and may provide valuable tools in the biological control of pest species. The Nasonia Genome Working Group (p. 343 ; see the news story by Pennisi ) presents the genome of three very closely related species: Nasonia vitripennis, N. giraulti , and N. longicornis . The findings document rapid evolution between a host and endosymbiont that can cause nuclear-cytoplasmic incompatibilities that may affect speciation.

The results of a search for the direct production of Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton modes using the rate of events with one or two energetic jets and large ET at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CFD) were reported. The search was based on 84±4 pb-1 of integrated luminosity recorded with the CDF detector. The final state of large missing transverse energy and one or two high energy jets was also investigated. We report results from a study of events with a double-Pomeron exchange topology produced in (p) over barp collisions at roots=1800 GeV. The events are characterized by a leading antiproton and a large rapidity gap on the outgoing proton side. We find that the differential production cross section agrees in shape with predictions based on Regge theory and factorization, and that the ratio of double-Pomeron exchange to single diffractive production rates is relatively unsuppressed as compared to the O(10) suppression factor previously measured in single diffractive production.
