Jon Goodman is considered the undisputed master of contemporary photogravure, a French term referring to high-contrast photoetching, producing a purely black and white image. Goodman, a photographer himself, has spent over two decades refining and developing this art which was first devised in 1878 and had almost vanished. It has been opined that he is perhaps the only contemporary photogravurist to earn a living solely from it.

The works of Lorna Simpson are mostly based on real life situations. They also reflect her experiences as a woman and as an African-American. Through her photographs, Simpson addresses complex racial and gender issues, trying to offer a narrative. It is not a portrayal of suffering but has a potent force of its own. Simpson's central theme revolves around the subjects of survival and those who have managed to survive.
