The bulk helimagnet Cu2OSeO3 represents a unique example in the family of B20 cubic helimagnets exhibiting a tilted spiral and skyrmion phase at low temperatures when the magnetic field is applied along the easy <001> crystallographic direction. Here we present a systematic study of the stability and ordering of these low temperature magnetic states. We focus our attention on the temperature and field dependencies of the tilted spiral state that we observe persisting up to above T =35 K, i.e. up to higher temperatures than reported so far. We discuss these results in the frame of the phenomenological theory introduced by Dzyaloshinskii in an attempt to reach a quantitative description of the experimental findings. We find that the anisotropy constants, which are the drivers behind the observed behaviour, exhibit a pronounced temperature dependence. This explains the differences in the behaviour observed at high temperatures (above T = 18 K), where the cubic anisotropy is weak, and at low temperatures (below T = 18 K), where a strong cubic anisotropy induces an abrupt appearance of the tilted spirals out of the conical state and enhances the stability of skyrmions.

Using the combined Density Functional and Dynamical Mean Field theory we study relativistic corrections to the Fermi surface of palladium. We find indeed that relativistic corrections create a small hole pockets at the $L$-symmetry points. Furthermore we show that the computed two dimensional Angular Correlation of Electron Positron Annihilation Radiation (the so called $2D$-ACAR) clearly demonstrates the existence of these $L$-hole pockets, which remains robust against electronic correlations. A $2D$-ACAR experiment should therefore provide the "smoking-gun" proof for the existence of the $L$-hole pockets in the palladium Fermi surface., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, accepted in PRB

The transmission through a magnetic layer of correlated electrons sandwiched between non-interacting normal-metal leads is studied within model calculations. We consider the linear regime in the framework of the Meir-Wingreen formalism, according to which the transmission can be interpreted as the overlap of the spectral function of the surface layer of the leads with that of the central region. By analyzing these spectral functions, we show that a change of the coupling parameter between the leads and the central region significantly and non-trivially affects the conductance. The role of band structure effects for the transmission is clarified. For a strong coupling between the leads and the central layer, high-intensity localized states are formed outside the overlapping bands, while for weaker coupling this high-intensity spectral weight is formed within the leads' continuum band around the Fermi energy. A local Coulomb interaction in the central region modifies the high-intensity states, and hence the transmission. For the present setup, the major effect of the local interaction consists in shifts of the band structure, since any sharp features are weakened due to the macroscopic extension of the configuration in the directions perpendicular to the transport direction., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures. The superconductivity in the Bi-II phase of elemental Bismuth (transition temperature $T_{\rm c}\simeq3.92$ K at pressure $p\simeq 2.80$ GPa) was studied experimentally by means of the muon-spin rotation as well as theoretically by using the Eliashberg theory in combination with Density Functional Theory calculations. Experiments reveal that Bi-II is a type-I superconductor with a zero temperature value of the thermodynamic critical field $B_{\rm c}(0)\simeq31.97$~mT. The Eliashberg theory approach provides a good agreement with the experimental $T_{\rm c}$ and the temperature evolution of $B_{\rm c}$. The estimated value for the retardation (coupling) parameter $k_{\rm B}T_{\rm c}/\omega_{\rm ln} \approx 0.07$ ($\omega_{\rm ln}$ is the logarithmically averaged phonon frequency) suggests that Bi-II is an intermediately-coupled superconductor., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

The lack of inversion symmetry in the crystal lattice of magnetic materials gives rise to complex non-collinear spin orders through interactions of relativistic nature, resulting in interesting physical phenomena, such as emergent electromagnetism. Studies of cubic chiral magnets revealed a universal magnetic phase diagram, composed of helical spiral, conical spiral and skyrmion crystal phases. Here, we report a remarkable deviation from this universal behavior. By combining neutron diffraction with magnetization measurements we observe a new multi-domain state in Cu2OSeO3. Just below the upper critical field at which the conical spiral state disappears, the spiral wave vector rotates away from the magnetic field direction. This transition gives rise to large magnetic fluctuations. We clarify physical origin of the new state and discuss its multiferroic properties.

Magnetic skyrmions are nano-sized topologically protected spin textures with particle-like properties. They can form lattices perpendicular to the magnetic field and the orientation of these skyrmion lattices with respect to the crystallographic lattice is governed by spin-orbit coupling. By performing small angle neutron scattering measurements, we investigate the coupling between the crystallographic and skyrmion lattices in both Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ and the archetype chiral magnet MnSi. The results reveal that the orientation of the skyrmion lattice is primarily determined by the magnetic field direction with respect to the crystallographic lattice. In addition, it is also influenced by the magnetic history of the sample which can induce metastable lattices. Kinetic measurements show that these metastable skyrmion lattices may or may not relax to their equilibrium positions under macroscopic relaxation times. Furthermore, multidomain lattices may form when two or more equivalent crystallographic directions are favored by spin-orbit coupling and oriented perpendicular to the magnetic field., Comment: Supplementory movie 4 is not uploaded due to size restrictions but is available upon request

The magnetic phase diagram of the chiral magnet Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ has been investigated by dc magnetisation and ac susceptibility over a very large frequency range from 0.1 Hz up to 1 kHz and temperatures below 50 K. Qualitatively different phase diagrams have been obtained by applying the magnetic field along the easy $\langle100\rangle$ or the hard $\langle110\rangle$ crystallographic directions. Strong $\chi"$ appears close to $B_{c2}$, but only below 30 K and is more pronounced when $B$ is applied along $\langle100\rangle$. In addition, the transition from the helical to the conical phase leads to two adjacent $B_{c1}$ lines below 50 K. The frequency dependence of $\chi"$ indicates the existence of very broad distributions of relaxation times both at $B_{c1}$ and $B_{c2}$. The associated very long characteristic times eventually prevent the system from reaching thermal equilibrium at low temperatures and lead to thermal hysteresis., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

The electronic structure of vanadium measured by Angular Correlation of electron-positron Annihilation Radiation (ACAR) is compared with the predictions of the combined Density Functional and Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT). Reconstructing the momentum density from five 2D projections we were able to determine the full Fermi surface and found excellent agreement with the DMFT calculations. In particular, we show that the local, dynamic self-energy corrections contribute to the anisotropy of the momentum density and need to be included to explain the experimental results.

The critical behavior of the cubic helimagnet FeGe was obtained from isothermal magnetization data in very close vicinity of the ordering temperature. A thorough and consistent scaling analysis of these data revealed the critical exponents $\beta=0.368$, $\gamma=1.382$, and $\delta=4.787$. The anomaly in the specific heat associated with the magnetic ordering can be well described by the critical exponent $\alpha=-0.133$. The values of these exponents corroborate that the magnetic phase transition in FeGe belongs to the isotropic 3D-Heisenberg universality class. We present an investigation of the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ based on DC magnetisation and AC susceptibility measurements covering a broad frequency range of four orders of magnitude, from very low frequencies reaching 0.1 Hz up to 1 kHz. The experiments were performed in the vicinity of $T_C=58.2$ K and around the skyrmion lattice A-phase. At the borders between the different phases the characteristic relaxation times reach several milliseconds and the relaxation is non-exponential. Consequently the borders between the different phases depend on the specific criteria and frequency used and an unambiguous determination is not possible., Comment: 10 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review B (2016)

The electrostatic force is described in this model by the action of electric dipole distributions on charged particles. The individual hypothetical dipoles are propagating at the speed of light in vacuum transferring momentum and energy between charges through interactions on a local basis. High pressure electrical resistivity and x-ray diffraction experiments have been performed on Fe single crystals. The crystallographic investigation provides direct evidence that in the martensitic $bcc \rightarrow hcp$ transition at 14 GPa the $\lbrace 110\rbrace_{bcc}$ become the $\lbrace 002\rbrace_{hcp}$ directions. During a pressure cycle, resistivity shows a broad hysteresis of 6.5 GPa, whereas superconductivity, observed between 13 and 31 GPa, remains unaffected. Upon increasing pressure an electronic instability, probably a quantum critical point, is observed at around 19 GPa and, close to this pressure, the superconducting $T_{c}$ and the isothermal resistivity ($0

High-resolution DC magnetization and AC-specific heat data of the cubic helimagnet FeGe have been measured as function of temperature and magnetic field. The magnetization data as well as the isothermal susceptibility data confirm the complexity of the magnetic phase diagram in the vicinity of the onset of long-rang magnetic order (Tc = 278.5 K) and the existence of a segmented A-phase region. Moreover, these data revealed independent and clear indications of phase boundaries and crossovers within the A-phase region. We report on magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements of the cubic helimagnet FeGe in external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic order at T_C=278.2(3)K. Pronounced anomalies in the field-dependent chi_ac(H) data as well as in the corresponding imaginary part chi"_ac(H) reveal a precursor region around T_C in the magnetic phase diagram. The occurrence of a maximum at T_0=279.6K in the zero-field specific heat data indicates a second order transition into a magnetically ordered state. A shoulder evolves above this maximum as a magnetic field is applied. The field dependence of both features coincides with crossover lines from the field-polarized to the paramagnetic state deduced from chi_ac(T) at constant magnetic fields. The experimental findings are analyzed within the standard Dzyaloshinskii theory for cubic helimagnets. The remarkable multiplicity of modulated precursor states and the complexity of the magnetic phase diagram near the magnetic ordering are explained by the change of the character of solitonic inter-core interactions and the onset of specific confined chiral modulations in this area., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We report on detailed polarized small-angle neutron scattering on cubic FeGe in magnetic fields applied either along (transverse) the scattering vector or parallel (longitudinal)to the neutron beam. The ($H,T$) phase diagrams for all principal axes contain a segmented $A$-phase region just below the onset of magnetic order. Hexagonal Bragg-spot patterns were observed across the entire $A$-phase region for the longitudinal geometry. Scattering intensity was observed in parts of the A phase for both scattering configurations. Only in a distinct pocket ($A_1$) vanishing scattering intensity was found in the transverse geometry., Comment: This paper has been withdrawn by the author due to misunderstanding with some of the co-authors

We report on detailed magnetic measurements on the cubic helimagnet FeGe in external magnetic fields and temperatures near the onset of long-range magnetic order at $T_C= 278.2(3)$ K. Precursor phenomena display a complex succession of temperature-driven crossovers and phase transitions in the vicinity of $T_C$. The A-phase region, present below $T_C$ and fields $H<0.5$ kOe, is split in several pockets. Relying on a modified phenomenological theory for chiral magnets, the main part of the A-phase could indicate the existence of a $+\pi$ Skyrmion lattice, the adjacent A$_2$ pocket, however, appears to be related to helicoids propagating in directions perpendicular to the applied field., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The structural parameters of $\epsilon$-FeGe have been determined at ambient conditions using single crystal refinement. Powder diffraction have been carried out to determine structural properties and compressibility for pressures up to 30 GPa and temperatures as low as 82 K. The discontinuous change in the pressure dependence of the shortest Fe-Ge interatomic distance might be interpreted as a symmetry-conserving transition and seems to be related to a magnetic phase boundary line., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

The optical spectrum of the cubic helimagnetic metal FeGe has been investigated in the frequency range from 0.01 - 3.1 eV for different temperatures from 30 K to 296 K. The optical conductivity shows the evolution of a low energy (0.22 eV) interband transition and the development of a narrow free carrier response with a strong energy and temperature dependence. The frequency dependent effective mass and scattering rate derived from the optical data indicate the formation of dressed quasi-particles with a mass renormalization factor of 12. Similar to FeSi the spectral weight in FeGe is not recovered over a broad frequency range, an effect usually attributed to the influence of the on-site Coulomb interaction., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We report on results of electrical resistivity and structural investigations on the cubic modification of FeGe under high pressure. The long-wavelength helical order ($T_C=280$ K) is suppressed at a critical pressure $p_c\approx 19$ GPa. An anomaly in the resistivity data at $T_X(p)$ and strong deviations from a Fermi-liquid behavior in a wide pressure range above $p_c$ suggest that the suppression of $T_C$ disagrees with the standard notion of a quantum critical phase transition. The metallic ground state persisting at high pressure can be described by band-structure calculations if structural disorder due to zero-point motion is included. Discontinuous changes in the pressure dependence of the shortest Fe-Ge interatomic distance occurring close to the $T_C(p)$ phase line could be interpreted as a symmetry-conserving transition of first order., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report magnetization and specific heat measurements in the 2D frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 at temperatures down to 0.05 K and high magnetic fields up to 11.5 T applied along a, b and c-axes. The low-field susceptibility chi (T) M/B shows a broad maximum around 2.8 K characteristic of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations and the overall temperature dependence is well described by high temperature series expansion calculations for the partially frustrated triangular lattice with J=4.46 K and J'/J=1/3. At much lower temperatures (< 0.4 K) and in in-plane field (along b and c-axes) several new intermediate-field ordered phases are observed in-between the low-field incommensurate spiral and the high-field saturated ferromagnetic state. The ground state energy extracted from the magnetization curve shows strong zero-point quantum fluctuations in the ground state at low and intermediate fields.

We report on results of specific heat measurements on single crystals of the frustrated quasi-2D spin-1/2 antiferromagnet Cs_2CuCl_4 (T_N=0.595 K) in external magnetic fields B<12 T and for temperatures T>30 mK. Decreasing B from high fields leads to the closure of the field-induced gap in the magnon spectrum at a critical field B_c = 8.51 T and a magnetic phase transition is clearly seen below B_c. In the vicinity to B_c, the phase transition boundary is well described by the power-law T_c(B)\propto (B_c-B)^{1/\phi} with the measured critical exponent \phi\simeq 1.5.
