Global maps of maximum bottom particle concentration, benthic nepheloid layer thickness, and integrated particle mass in benthic nepheloid layers (BNL) based on 2412 global profiles collected using the Lamont Thorndike nephelometer from 1964 to 1984 are compared with maps of those same properties compiled from 6392 global profiles measured by transmissometers from 1979 to 2016. Outputs from both instruments were converted to particulate matter concentration (PM). The purposes of this paper are to compare global differences and similarities in the location and intensity of BNLs measured with these two independent instruments over slightly overlapping decadal time periods, to combine the data sets in order to expand the time scale of global in situ measurements of BNLs, and to gain insight about the factors creating/sustaining BNLs. The similarity between general locations of high and low particle concentration BNLs during the two time periods indicates that the driving forces of erosion and resuspension of bottom sediments are spatially persistent during recent decadal time spans, though in areas of strong BNLs, intensity is highly episodic. Topography and well-developed current systems play a role. These maps will help to understand deep ocean sediment dynamics, linkage with upper ocean dynamics, the potential for scavenging of adsorption-prone elements near the seafloor, and provide a comprehensive comparison of these data sets on a global scale. During both time periods, BNLs are weak or absent in most of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic basins away from continental margins. High surface eddy kinetic energy is associated with the Kuroshio Current east of Japan. Both data sets show weak BNLs south of the Kuroshio, but no transmissometer data have been collected beneath the Kuroshio itself. Sparse nephelometer data show moderate BNLs just north of the Kuroshio Extension, but with much lower concentrations than beneath the Gulf Stream. Strong BNLs are found in areas where eddy kinetic energy in overlying waters, mean kinetic energy near bottom, and energy dissipation within the bottom boundary layer are high. Areas of strongest BNLs include the Western North Atlantic, Argentine Basin (South Atlantic), areas around South Africa tied to the Agulhas Current region, and somewhat random locations in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current of the Southern Ocean.

Benthic storms are episodic periods of strong abyssal currents and intense, benthic nepheloid (turbid) layer development. In order to interpret the driving forces that create and sustain these storms, we synthesize measurements of deep ocean currents, nephelometer-based particulate matter (PM) concentrations, and seafloor time-series photographs collected during several science programs that spanned two decades in the western North Atlantic. Benthic storms occurred in areas with high sea-surface eddy kinetic energy, and they most frequently occurred beneath the meandering Gulf Stream or its associated rings, which generate deep cyclones, anticyclones, and/or topographic waves; these create currents with sufficient bed-shear stress to erode and resuspend sediment, thus initiating or enhancing benthic storms. Occasionally, strong currents do not correspond with large increases in PM concentrations, suggesting that easily erodible sediment was previously swept away. Periods of moderate to low currents associated with high PM concentrations are also observed; these are interpreted as advection of PM delivered as storm tails from distal storm events. Outside of areas with high surface and deep eddy kinetic energy, benthic nepheloid layers are weak to non-existent, indicating that benthic storms are necessary to create and maintain strong nepheloid layers. Origins and intensities of benthic storms are best identified using a combination of time-series measurements of bottom currents, PM concentration, and bottom photographs, and these should be coupled with water-column and surface-circulation data to better interpret the specific relations between shallow and deep circulation patterns. Understanding the generation of benthic nepheloid layers is necessary in order to properly interpret PM distribution and its influence on global biogeochemistry.

Here we present a new flexible modeling tool for simulating the distribution of tracers in the modern ocean. A Working Environment for Simulating Ocean Movement and Elemental cycling within an Ocean Circulation Inverse Model, the AWESOME OCIM, is a transport matrix model (TMM) which is specifically designed to be easy, accessible, and intuitive, even for scientists without prior modeling experience. The AWESOME OCIM comes with a variety of selectable biogeochemical functions, including sources (atmospheric dust, hydrothermal vents, and seafloor nepheloid layers), internal cycling processes (biological uptake, remineralization, and scavenging), and sinks (radioactive decay and burial of particles in the sediments). A wide variety of elements can be simulated through different combinations of this suite of processes. We anticipate that the AWESOME OCIM will be a valuable tool for interpreting transect data from ocean surveys, particularly the trace-elements and isotopes distributions mapped by the ongoing GEOTRACES program. This manuscript provides an introduction to the philosophical, mathematical, and functional basis of the AWESOME OCIM.

The oceanic cycles of thorium-230 and protactinium-231 are affected by a number of processes, such as removal by adsorption to settling particles and transport by ocean currents. Measurements obtained as part of GEOTRACES and earlier programs have shown that, in the North Atlantic, the activities of dissolved 230Th (230Thd) and 231Pa (231Pad) at abyssal depths are lower near the western margin than in the basin interior. At least two factors could explain the lower 230Thd and 231Pad near the margin: (i) intensified scavenging in benthic nepheloid layers (BNLs) extending a thousand meters or more above the seafloor; and (ii) ventilation by relatively 230Thd- and 231Pad-poor waters emanating from the Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC). Here a regional ocean circulation model with ‘eddy-permitting’ resolution (1/4∘) that incorporates 230Th and 231Pa is used in an effort to reproduce the observed distributions of 230Th and 231Pa in the western North Atlantic. In this model, 230Th and 231Pa removal from solution is governed by a prescribed distribution of particulate matter that is derived from a recent synthesis of nephelometer and transmissometer data. The model simulates a meandering Gulf Stream and a DWBC along the continental slope and rise, although noticeable differences with physical observations also exist. A model solution is found that explains most of the variance of 230Thd measurements (85%) and 231Pad measurements (81%) from (pre-)GEOTRACES cruises. On the other hand, measurements of particulate 230Th (230Thp) and 231Pa (231Pap) are more difficult to reproduce, with the same solution accounting for only 49% (11%) of the 230Thp (231Pap) variance. Sensitivity experiments suggest that the low 230Thd and 231Pad activities observed near the western margin are due to enhanced removal rates of both nuclides in BNLs rather than to deep water ventilation from the western boundary. The radionuclide activities present in the DWBC at its inflow location are also found to strongly influence the basin-scale distributions of 230Th and 231Pa. Overall, our study points to BNLs as important sites of 230Th and 231Pa scavenging in the ocean and illustrates the difficulty to explain simultaneously radionuclide measurements in dissolved and particulate forms in the studied area.

Optical measurements provide substantial information on the dynamics and composition of particulate matter in the open ocean and coastal waters. When calibrated with the analysis of simultaneously collected discrete bottle samples, (particulate matter concentration: PMC, particulate organic carbon concentration: POC, chlorophyll α concentration: chl α, particle volume concentration and particle size distribution measured in situ), optical proxies increase the vertical resolution of changes in particle properties in the water column. We report relationships of inherent optical properties (beam attenuation at 2 wavelengths, fluorescence) and bulk particle properties obtained in the NW Black Sea during October 2007. The Danube River delta area was heavily stratified at that time, mainly due to a sharp thermocline at 17–27 m. Beam cp and fluorescence were significantly correlated and showed highest values near the coast, with a decreasing trend offshore. In situ measured particle size distributions were characterized by modes at ~ 40 μm, 20 μm and 5 μm. PMC, POC, and chl α exhibited wide ranges of spatial variation, a common feature being the gradual decrease in concentrations from the coast to offshore. The POC:PMC and POC:chl α ratios suggested a general predominance of biogenic material over terrigenous particles throughout the study area. The commonly accepted sequence of large phytoplanktonic species transitioning to smaller ones during summer–autumn was confirmed by light microscopy and SEM observations. Detritus of Chaetoceros sp. and other diatoms was the dominant component of particulate matter. The small percentage of terrigenous particles was surprising given the high riverine sediment loads suggesting that most of the sediment load flocculated and was deposited before reaching the delta. Given the lack of previous data in this area, our study may serve as a baseline or background to look for changes in future bio-optical and/or biogeochemical measurements.
