1. Radiative Transfer of HCN: Interpreting observations of hyperfine anomalies

Abstract

Molecules with hyperfine splitting of their rotational line spectra are useful probes of optical depth, via the relative line strengths of their hyperfine components.The hyperfine splitting is particularly advantageous in interpreting the physical conditions of the emitting gas because with a second rotational transition, both gas density and temperature can be derived. For HCN however, the relative strengths of the hyperfine lines are anomalous. They appear in ratios which can vary significantly from source to source, and are inconsistent with local thermodynamic equilibrium. This is the HCN hyperfine anomaly, and it prevents the use of simple LTE models of HCN emission to derive reliable optical depths. In this paper we demonstrate how to model HCN hyperfine line emission, and derive accurate line ratios, spectral line shapes and optical depths. We show that by carrying out radiative transfer calculations over each hyperfine level individually, as opposed to summing them over each rotational level, the anomalous hyperfine emission emerges naturally. To do this requires not only accurate radiative rates between hyperfine states, but also accurate collisional rates. We investigate the effects of different sets of hyperfine collisional rates, derived via the 'proportional method' and through direct recoupling calculations. Through an extensive parameter sweep over typical low mass star forming conditions, we show the HCN line ratios to be highly variable to optical depth. We also reproduce an observed effect whereby the red-blue asymmetry of the hyperfine lines (an infall signature) switches sense within a single rotational transition., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Abstract

Three bright molecular line sources in G333 have recently been shown to exhibit signatures of infall. We describe a molecular line radiative transfer modelling process which is required to extract the infall signature from Mopra and Nanten2 data. The observed line profiles differ greatly between individual sources but are reproduced well by variations upon a common unified model where the outflow viewing angle is the most significant difference between the sources. The models and data together suggest that the observed properties of the high-mass star-forming regions such as infall, turbulence, and mass are consistent with scaled-up versions of the low-mass case with turbulent velocities that are supersonic and an order of magnitude larger than those found in low-mass star-forming regions. Using detailed radiative transfer modeling, we show that the G333 cores are essentially undergoing a scaled-up version of low mass star formation. This is an extension of earlier work in that the degree of infall and the chemical abundances are constrained by the RT modeling in a way that is not practical with a standard analysis of observational data. We also find high velocity infall and high infall mass rates, possibly suggesting accelerated collapse due to external pressure. Molecular depletion due to freeze-out onto dust grains in central regions of the cores is suggested by low molecular abundances of several species. Strong evidence for a local enhancement of 13C-bearing species towards the outflow cloud cores is discussed, consistent with the presence of shocks caused by the supersonic motions within them., Comment: MNRAS (accepted)

Abstract

We present molecular line imaging observations of three massive molecular outflow sources, G333.6-0.2, G333.1-0.4, and G332.8-0.5, all of which also show evidence for infall, within the G333 giant molecular cloud (GMC). All three are within a beam size (36 arcseconds) of IRAS sources, 1.2-mm dust clumps, various masing species and radio continuum-detected HII regions and hence are associated with high-mass star formation. We present the molecular line data and derive the physical properties of the outflows including the mass, kinematics, and energetics and discuss the inferred characteristics of their driving sources. Outflow masses are of 10 to 40 solar masses in each lobe, with core masses of order 10^3 solar masses. outflow size scales are a few tenth of a parsec, timescales are of several x10^4 years, mass loss rates a few x10^-4 solar masses/year. 4. The Cambridge-Cambridge ROSAT Serendipity Survey - II. Classification of X-ray Luminous Galaxies

Abstract

We present the results of an intermediate-resolution (1.5\AA) spectroscopic study of 17 X-ray luminous narrow emission-line galaxies previously identified in the Cambridge-Cambridge {\it ROSAT} Serendipity Survey and the {\it Einstein} Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey. Emission-line ratios reveal that the sample is composed of ten Seyfert and seven starburst galaxies. Measured linewidths for the narrow H$\alpha$ emission lines lie in the range $170-460\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}$. Five of the objects show clear evidence for asymmetry in the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 emission-line profile. Broad H$\alpha$ emission is detected in six of the Seyfert galaxies, which range in type from Seyfert 1.5 to 2. Broad H$\beta$ emission is only detected in one Seyfert galaxy. The mean full width at half maximum for the broad lines in the Seyfert galaxies is ${\rm FWHM = 3900\pm 1750\,km\,s^{-1}}$. Broad (${\rm FWHM = 2200\pm 600\,km\,s^{-1}}$) $H\alpha$ emission is also detected in three of the starburst galaxies, which could originate from stellar winds or supernovae remnants. The mean Balmer decrement for the sample is H$\alpha$/H$\beta=3$, consistent with little or no reddening for the bulk of the sample. There is no evidence for any trend with X-ray luminosity in the ratio of starburst galaxies to Seyfert galaxies. Abstract

FOXO transcription factors have been shown to regulate longevity in model organisms and are associated with longevity in humans. To gain insight into how FOXO functions to increase lifespan, we examined the subcellular localization of DAF-16 in C. elegans. We show that DAF-16 is localized to endosomes and that this endosomal localization is increased by the insulin-IGF signaling (IIS) pathway. Endosomal localization of DAF-16 is modulated by endosomal trafficking proteins. Disruption of the Rab GTPase activating protein TBC-2 increases endosomal localization of DAF-16, while inhibition of TBC-2 targets, RAB-5 or RAB-7 GTPases, decreases endosomal localization of DAF-16. Importantly, the amount of DAF-16 that is localized to endosomes has functional consequences as increasing endosomal localization through mutations in tbc-2 reduced the lifespan of long-lived daf-2 IGFR mutants, depleted their fat stores, and DAF-16 target gene expression. Overall, this work identifies endosomal localization as a mechanism regulating DAF-16 FOXO, which is important for its functions in metabolism and aging.

13. P911Universal S-ICD eligibility: eliminating the need for pre-implant screening using mathematical vector rotation and a gradient filter

Abstract

S-ICD eligibility is determined by ECG morphology across three sensing vectors; primary (P), secondary (S) and alternate (A). Small R:T ratios and low amplitude signals confer an unacceptable risk of oversensing and are unsuitable. The vector score is a composite measure of signal amplitude and R:T ratio calculated using an S-ICD simulator. Eligibility requires a single vector to score > 100. Around 5% of ICD patients have no suitable vector, this rises to 13-16% in some patient groups (ACHD, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). Mathematical vector rotation is a novel technique which can generate vectors, at any given angle of observation, using signal recorded in the current S-ICD position. Vector rotation alters the relative amplitudes of both R and T such that for any individual, the largest R wave vector (Rmax) and the smallest T wave vector (Tmin) can be generated. We hypothesise that combining these signals, using a gradient filter to identify periods of rapidly changing signal amplitude, will significantly increase both R:T ratio and vector scores. Application of this programming to a cohort of patients, who are currently S-ICD ineligible, has the potential to produce universal device eligibility.

16. Assessing the accuracy of surface ECG as a surrogate for the sensing vectors of the subcutaneous ICD

Abstract

The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) consists of a pulse generator (can) and a single subcutaneous lead with two sensing electrodes; proximal (P) and distal (D). The S-ICD records three sensing vectors; primary (P to can), secondary (D to can) and alternate (D to P). Accurate positioning of electrocardiogram (ECG) electrodes allows a surface ECG to be recorded which mimics the S-ICD sensing vectors. This technique is currently used in S-ICD screening and has potential research applications, although its accuracy has not previously been assessed.

Abstract

The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator (S-ICD) consists of a pulse generator (can) and a single subcutaneous lead with two sensing electrodes; proximal (Pr) and distal (D). The S-ICD records three sensing vectors; primary (Pr to can), secondary (D to can) and alternate (D to Pr) which form an approximate right angled triangle in the frontal plane. Two dimensional modelling of the vectors as a right angled triangle is a useful tool for S-ICD research and development, although the accuracy of this technique has not been validated.

A computer-based battery of performance tasks as used which included subjective measures, short and long term monitoring tasks, continuous production tasks, precision measures, and an extensive battery of cognitive tests. Repetition of extended performance across 48 hours without sleep at four monthly intervals did not offset performance decrements. Where effects were obtained, performance decrements were enhanced. In two experiments with 40-50 year old subjects and 50-60 year old subjects in extended performance of forty-eight hours without sleep, where differences were obtained, older subjects showed a greater performance degradation. Three schedules of interjected naps within a 72 hour period of extended were used: two hour naps prior to the second and third night period, two hours naps following the first and second night period; and a single four hour nap prior to the second night. Limited counter degradation effects were found in the final period of performance. The largest decrements on measures were found in subjective measures, vigilance tasks, and continuous production tasks. More limited decrements or no decrements were found in the cognitive tasks and the precision measures.

Limited counter degradation effects were found in the final period of performance. The largest decrements on measures were found in subjective measures, vigilance tasks, and continuous production tasks. More limited decrements or no decrements were found in the cognitive tasks and the precision measures.
