Abstract

Measurements have been made of pi+ absorption on He3 at T_pi+ = 118, 162, and 239 MeV using the Large Acceptance Detector System (LADS). The nearly 4pi solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertainties associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The total absorption cross section is reported. In addition, the total cross section is divided into components in which only two or all three nucleons play a significant role in the process. These are the first direct measurements of the total and three nucleon absorption cross sections., Comment: 8 pages, LaTeX. 3 figures, anonymous ftp MITLNS.MIT.EDU, cd LADS. Submitted to PRL. Abstract

In this work, we study neural network architectures that will reduce the number of infractions made by autonomous-driving agents. These agents control vehicles by providing future waypoints directly from a forward-facing camera. Building on top of the teacher-student approach of Cheating by Segmentation, we investigate the impact of Pyramid Pooling Module and Feature Pyramid Network with the aim to learn more representative features. We run our experiment with CARLA simulatorand show that pyramid perception modules have a positive impact in reducing the number of traffic light infractions and collisions.

Određuju se ukupni udarni presjeci i njihovo razlaganje u najvažnije kanale. Predstavljaju se rezultati za jezgre N, Ar i Xe na energijama 118,162 i 239 MeV. Ističe se uloga višenukleonske emisije u procesu apsorpcije.

Abstract

This paper presents a large solid angle measurement of the positive pion absorption cross section 4He and its decomposition into partial channels. The total absorption cross sections at incident pion kinetic energies of Tpi+ = 70, 118, 162, and 239 MeV are 35+/-5, 52+/-4, 51+/-5, and 27+/-2 mb, respectively. These values are lower section is due to multinucleon channels.

Abstract

Results from a measurement of the reaction 2H(+,pp)  at T+ = 239 MeV are presented. Because two protons were detected, the measurement was sensitive to events which involved both nucleons in a substantial way. Differential distributions are compared to the predictions of simple models. An integrated cross section for SCX (single charge exchange), with the emmision of two protons each with kinetic energy >25 MeV, is presented

Abstract

A Large Acceptance Detector System (LADS) has been designed and built at the Paul Scherrer Institute to study multiparticle final states following pion-nucleus absorption. It consists of a 28-sector cylinder of plastic scintillators of 1.6 m active length and 1.4 m diameter, two cylindrical wire chambers, and two 14-sector plastic scintillator end-caps which close each end. The nearly 4pi solid angle coverage of this detector minimizes uncertaities associated with extrapolations over unmeasured regions of phase space. The design and the performance of the LADS detector are presented.

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment will measure CP violation parameters in the neutral kaon system, using a low energy antiproton beam from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN. One of its subdetectors, the Particle Identification Detector (PID), makes a fast separation of pions and kaons, which is essential for the experiment. This article describes the design of the PID and its performance during beam tests and during initial runs at LEAR. A pion rejection efficiency of 99.7% for the first level trigger (after 60 ns) is found in the relevant momentum region.

Abstract

Abstract:: The pion absorption reaction (π+,3 p ) on Ar was studied at pion energies of 70, 118, 162 and 239 MeV, and on N and Xe at 239 MeV. The 3p cross section with a 50 MeV cut on the missing energy is presented. The existence of an initial state interaction (ISI) component to the reaction was investigated. The portion of the 3p cross section assigned to the ISI process is less than one half and at lower energies significantly so.

Abstract

The CPLEAR experiment will measure CP violation parameters in the neutral kaon system, using a low energy antiproton beam from the Low Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR) at CERN. One of its subdetectors, the Particle Identification Detector (PID), makes a fast separation of pions and kaons, which is essential for the experiment. This article describes the design of the PID and its performance during beam tests and during initial runs at LEAR. A pion rejection efficiency of 99.7% for the first level trigger (after 60 ns) is found in the relevant momentum region. Abstract

In environmental risk assessment either for registration purposes or for retrospective assessments of monitoring data, the hazard assessment is predominantly based on effect data from ecotoxicity studies. Most regulatory frameworks require studies used for risk assessment to be evaluated for reliability and relevance. Historically, the Klimisch methodology was used in many regulatory procedures where reliability needed to be evaluated. More recently, the Criteria for Reporting and Evaluating Ecotoxicity Data (CRED) have been developed for aquatic ecotoxicity studies, providing more detailed guidance on the evaluation and reporting of not only the reliability but also the relevance of a scientific study. Here, we discuss the application of the CRED methodology for assessing sediment and soil ecotoxicity studies, addressing important sediment- and soil-specific criteria that should be included as part of the CRED evaluation system. We also provide detailed recommendations for the design and reporting of sediment and soil toxicity studies that can be used by scientists and researchers wishing to contribute ecotoxicological data for effect assessments carried out within regulatory frameworks. Abstract

In Switzerland, surface waters are protected by the Swiss Water Protection Ordinance (OEaux; OFEV 1998), which stipulates that the water quality shall be such that the water, suspended matter, and sediments contain no persistent synthetic substances to ensure the protection of aquatic life. Local agencies are in charge of water quality monitoring, using a set of validated methods. Several lists of priority substances have been developed for aquatic microcontaminants for surface water monitoring but not for sediments. Some local agencies have established sediment monitoring programs, but to date, there exists no harmonized methodology for sediment quality assessment in Switzerland. Within the main goal of developing and providing methodologies for monitoring sediment quality in Switzerland, a screening was performed to help prioritize sediment-relevant microcontaminants. The screening approach was largely based on the NORMAN (network of reference laboratories, research centers, and related organizations for monitoring emerging environmental substances) system and was carried out in four steps: (1) identification of candidate substances, (2) selection of sediment relevant substances, (3) classification of substances into different categories based on identified data gaps and envisaged actions, and (4) ranking within each action category. This paper describes the methodology used in the prioritization process for sediment-relevant substances and provides recommendations for monitoring strategies in Switzerland.

Abstract

The inter-individual variation of EEG spectra is large even for the same cognitive task. We asked whether task-induced EEG spectra remain stable over more than a year. We recorded EEG in 41 healthy adults who performed a modified Sternberg task. In 20 subjects EEG was recorded in a second session with retest intervals 12-40 months. For electrodes AFz, Cz and Pz peak frequency and peak height were determined. We compared the curve shape of power spectra by regressing spectra pairwise onto each other and calculated a t-value. The t-value and pairwise differences in peak frequency and peak height between all sessions were entered into a generalized linear model (GLM) where binary output represents the recognition probability. The results were cross-validated by out-of-sample testing. Of the 40 sessions, 35 were correctly matched. The shape of power spectra contributed most to recognition. Out of all 2400 pairwise comparisons 99.3% were correct, with sensitivity 87.5% and specificity 99.5%. The intra-individual stability is high compared to the inter-individual variation. Thus, interleaved EEG-fMRI measurements are valid. Furthermore, longitudinal effects on cognitive EEG can be judged against the intra-individual variability in subjects.

In 20 persons EEG was recorded in a second session with retest intervals 12-40 months. For electrodes AFz, Cz and Pz alpha peak frequency and alpha peak height were transformed into Z-scores. We compared the curve shape of power spectra by first aligning alpha peaks to 10Hz and then regressing spectra pairwise onto each other to calculate a t-value. The t-value and differences of Z-scores for all pairs of sessions were entered into a generalized linear model (GLM) where binary output represents the recognition probability. The results were cross-validated by out-of-sample testing., Results: Of the 40 sessions, 35 were correctly matched. The shape of power spectra contributed most to recognition. Out of all 2960 pairwise comparisons 99.5% were correct, with sensitivity 88% and specificity 99.5%., Conclusions: Our statistical apparatus allows to identify those spectral EEG observables which qualify as statistical signature of a person., Significance: The effect of external factors on EEG observables can be contrasted against their normal variability over time.
