Abstract

We present an analysis technique that uses the timing information of Cherenkov images from extensive air showers (EAS). Our emphasis is on distant, or large core distance gamma-ray induced showers at multi-TeV energies. Specifically, combining pixel timing information with an improved direction reconstruction algorithm, leads to improvements in angular and core resolution as large as ~40% and ~30%, respectively, when compared with the same algorithm without the use of timing. Above 10 TeV, this results in an angular resolution approaching 0.05 degrees, together with a core resolution better than ~15 m. The off-axis post-cut gamma-ray acceptance is energy dependent and its full width at half maximum ranges from 4 degrees to 8 degrees. For shower directions that are up to ~6 degrees off-axis, the angular resolution achieved by using timing information is comparable, around 100 TeV, to the on-axis angular resolution. The telescope specifications and layout we describe here are geared towards energies above 10 TeV. However, the methods can in principle be applied to other energies, given suitable telescope parameters. The 5-telescope cell investigated in this study could initially pave the way for a larger array of sparsely spaced telescopes in an effort to push the collection area to >10 km2. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a hybrid detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It combines a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level together with a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The fluorescence detector comprises 24 large telescopes specialized for measuring the nitrogen fluorescence caused by charged particles of cosmic ray air showers. In this paper we describe the components of the fluorescence detector including its optical system, the design of the camera, the electronics, and the systems for relative and absolute calibration. We also discuss the operation and the monitoring of the detector. Finally, we evaluate the detector performance and precision of shower reconstructions., Comment: 53 pages. Abstract

TenTen is a proposed array of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) optimized for the gamma ray energy regime of 10 TeV to 100 TeV, but with a threshold of ~1 to a few TeV. It will offer a collecting area of 10 km2 above energies of 10 TeV. In the initial phase, a cell of 3 to 5 modest-sized telescopes, each with 10-30 m2 mirror area, is suggested for an Australian site. A possible expansion of the array could comprise many such cells. Here we present work on configuration and technical issues from our simulation studies of the array. Abstract

The exciting results from H.E.S.S. point to a new population of gamma-ray sources at energies E > 10 TeV, paving the way for future studies and new discoveries in the multi-TeV energy range. Connected with these energies is the search for sources of PeV cosmic-rays (CRs) and the study of multi-TeV gamma-ray production in a growing number of astrophysical environments. TenTen is a proposed stereoscopic array (with a suggested site in Australia) of modest-sized (10 to 30m^2) Cherenkov imaging telescopes with a wide field of view (8 to 10deg diameter) optimised for the E~10 to 100 TeV range. TenTen will achieve an effective area of ~10 km^2 at energies above 10 TeV. 16. Do the Chinese Astronomical Records Dated A.D. 776 January 12/13 Describe an Auroral Display or a Lunar Halo? A Critical Re-examination

Abstract

The enhancement of carbon-14 in tree rings around AD 774/775 has generated wide interest in solar activity at that time. The historical auroral records have been examined critically. Of particular interest was the “white vapour” observed in China on AD 776 January 12/13. Both Usoskin et al. (Astron. Astrophys. 55, L3, 2013; U13) and Stephenson (Adv. Space Res. 55, 1537, 2015; S15) interpreted this record as an auroral display. Subsequently, Neuhäuser and Neuhäuser (Astron. Nachr. 336, 225, 2015; NN15) proposed five “criteria” for the likeliness of aurorae and on this basis rejected an auroral interpretation. Instead, they interpreted it as a lunar halo, and suggested there were no auroral records as a proxy of solar activity in the interval AD 774 – 785. We consider if their “lunar halo hypothesis” and their auroral criteria could be of use in future researches on historical auroral candidates. We first show a counter-example for the lunar halo hypothesis from a parallel record on 1882 November 17, which was seen as a whitish colour, in the southerly direction, and near the Moon. We then consider NN15’s criteria on colour, direction, and sky brightness and investigate other counter-examples from early-modern auroral observations. We also consider the extension of the white vapour in AD 776 according to the distribution of Chinese asterisms, and show that its large extension was inconsistent with the lunar halo hypothesis. Conversely, the streaks of white vapour penetrating the eight Chinese asterisms can be reproduced if we consider auroral-ray structures at altitudes between 97 km and 170 km, along geomagnetic field lines between the L-shells L=1.55 and 1.64. Our investigations show that we should consider candidate auroral records in historical documents not on the basis of the newly suggested a priori criteria by NN15 but based on all the available observational evidence.

Abstract

Allelism in glutathione S-transferase GSTM1 and GSTT1 has been suggested as a risk factor in various cancers. Accordingly, we describe a group of case-control studies carried out to identify associations between GSTT1 genotypes and susceptibility to lung, oral, gastric and colorectal cancers. The frequencies of the putatively high risk GSTT1 null genotype were not increased in the lung, oral or gastric cancer cases compared with controls but the frequency of this genotype was significantly increased (P = 0.0011, odds ratio = 1.88) in the colorectal cancer cases. No significant interactions between the GSTT1 and GSTM1 null genotypes were identified in the cancer groups studied. Indeed, no significant associations between GSTM1 genotypes and susceptibility were identified though further evidence was obtained that the protective effect of GSTM1*A and GSTM1*B is not equal. The data complement studies showing that GSTT1 null is associated with an increased susceptibility to total ulcerative colitis and suggests that this enzyme is important in the detoxification of unidentified xenobiotics in the large intestine.

Einleitung: Für Kleinkinder im Alter von 6-24 Monate existieren bisher kaum Untersuchungstechniken zur Beurteilung der frühkindlichen Kommunikationsfähigkeiten sowie des Sprachentwicklungstands.Material und Methode: Es wurde ein logopädisches Abklärungsverfahren erarbeitet, welches mittels Videodokumentation in standardisierten Spielsituationen eine Beurteilung der prälingualen Kommunikationsfähigkeiten erlaubt. Vier Teilbereiche werden beurteilt: die sozial-kommunikativen und oro-fazialen Kompetenzen als Voraussetzung zur Lautsprachentwicklung sowie die präverbal- und ersten verbal-kommunikativen Kompetenzen. Resultate: Seit Mitte 2003 wurden 15 prälingual ertaubte Kleinkinder erstmals vor einer CI-Operation im Alter zwischen 9 und 38 Monaten logopädisch beurteilt. Die Videoaufzeichnungen wurden analysiert, indem die sprachspezifischen Befunde mittels Auswertungsbogen quantitativ und qualitativ bewertet wurden. Nach der Implantation erfolgten alle sechs Monate logopädische Kontrolluntersuchungen nach demselben Verfahren. Die postoperativen Fortschritte in der Sprachentwicklung der untersuchten Kinder werden aufgezeigt. Diskussion: Mittels standardisierter logopädischer Untersuchung ist es möglich, bereits bei Kleinkindern in den ersten zwei Lebensjahren die Sprachentwicklung zu beurteilen und intra- sowie interindividuell zu vergleichen. Eine frühe logopädische Beurteilung während der sensiblen Phase der Hör- und Sprachentwicklung erlaubt eine bessere Beratung der Eltern und Pädagogen sowie genauere prognostische Aussagen vor und nach einer Cochlea-Implantation.

Abstract

Three months of data taken by the Engineering Array Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory have been analyzed with the aim of setting a procedure for the study of showers at E_0 ~ 10^18 eV. We present the results, concerning: (i) the selection procedure and the check of its efficiency; (ii) the event rate and its stability; (iii) the characteristics of such events (i.e., angular direction, energy estimator S(1000), rise time vs core distance, correlation with pressure) showing their consistency with the expectations. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Southern Observatory in Argentina has begun taking data as it is being developed up to a final enclosed area of 3000 square kilometres. A key aspect of the project is to provide information on the origin of the highest energy cosmic rays through understanding the arrival directions of those particles. To avoid claims of a spurious anisotropy detection because trials have not been properly accounted, the Auger Collaboration has agreed 'a priori' to the analysis prescription presented here. It specifies the following: 1. The accumulation time for the (future) data set to be analyzed. 2. The anisotropy 'targets', each assigned a chance probability level. 3. The analysis procedure for each trial. A positive result will be claimed for any target search only if its chance probability is less than its assigned level. The levels are chosen so that the total chance probability for one or more positive results is 0.001. Exploratory searches beyond this prescription will be encouraged, but the Auger Collaboration will not assign any confidence level to anisotropies that may be discovered that way. Any such discovery would identify a good target for a prescription to be used with a subsequent Auger data set., 4 pages

Abstract

The absolute calibration of an air fluorescence detector (FD) is an important element in correctly determining the energy of detected cosmic rays. The absolute calibration relates the flux of photons of a given wavelength at the detector aperture to the electronic signal recorded by the FD data acquisition system. For the Auger FDs, the primary absolute calibration method uses a diffusive surface which is placed in front of a telescope aperture to uniformly illuminate the telescope field of view with a known light signal. This single-wavelength measurement (375 nm) will be made at intervals of several months until the stability of the telescopes is determined. The relative wavelength dependence of the calibration is determined through independent measurements. The error in absolute calibration at a single wavelength is estimated to be less than 10%. Two other absolute calibration methods are used to provide an independent verification of the primary measurement. The stability of the calibration with time is monitored nightly by a relative calibration system. In this paper we will provide descriptions of the absolute and relative calibration methods used by the Auger air fluorescence observatory. Abstract

The Pierre Auger Observatory is a``hybrid'' UHECR detector. The surface detector (SD) and air fluorescence detector (FD) of the observatory are designed for observation of cosmic ray showers in coincidence, with a 10% duty cycle. The resulting data are expected to be superior in quality to those of either the SD or FD operating individually. Hybrid operation, triggering, data acquisition, and event reconstruction were successfully demonstrated during the prototype phase of the project. This paper focuses on 75 hybrid events recorded during a four month period of running with the prototype detectors in late 2001 and early 2002. The geometric technique for reconstruction of the hybrid events is described and its advantages over the traditional FD-only method are demonstrated. Contains fulltext : 70028.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), OBJECTIVE: To test if a combination of biomarkers can increase the classification power of autoantibodies to cyclic citrullinated peptides (anti-CCP) in the diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) depending on the diagnostic situation. METHODS: Biomarkers were subject to three inclusion/exclusion criteria (discrimination between RA patients and healthy blood donors, ability to identify anti-CCP-negative RA patients, specificity in a panel with major non-rheumatological diseases) before univariate ranking and multivariate analysis was carried out using a modelling panel (n = 906). To enable the evaluation of the classification power in different diagnostic settings the disease controls (n = 542) were weighted according to the admission rates in rheumatology clinics modelling a clinic panel or according to the relative prevalences of musculoskeletal disorders in the general population seen by general practitioners modelling a GP panel. RESULT: Out of 131 biomarkers considered originally, we evaluated 32 biomarkers in this study, of which only seven passed the three inclusion/exclusion criteria and were combined by multivariate analysis using four different mathematical models. In the modelled clinic panel, anti-CCP was the lead marker with a sensitivity of 75.8% and a specificity of 94.0%. Due to the lack in specificity of the markers other than anti-CCP in this diagnostic setting, any gain in sensitivity by any marker combination is off-set by a corresponding loss in specificity. In the modelled GP panel, the best marker combination of anti-CCP and interleukin (IL)-6 resulted in a sensitivity gain of 7.6% (85.9% vs. 78.3%) at a minor loss in specificity of 1.6% (90.3% vs. 91.9%) compared with anti-CCP as the best single marker. CONCLUSION: Depending on the composition of the sample panel, anti-CCP alone or anti-CCP in combination with IL-6 has the highest classification power for the diagnosis of established RA.

43. Beurteilung der Sprachentwicklung bei Kleinkindern mit einem Cochlea-Implantat

Abstract

Einleitung: Für Kleinkinder im Alter von 6-24 Monate existieren bisher kaum Untersuchungstechniken zur Beurteilung der frühkindlichen Kommunikationsfähigkeiten sowie des Sprachentwicklungstands.Material und Methode: Es wurde ein logopädisches Abklärungsverfahren erarbeitet, welches mittels Videodokumentation in standardisierten Spielsituationen eine Beurteilung der prälingualen Kommunikationsfähigkeiten erlaubt. Vier Teilbereiche werden beurteilt: die sozial-kommunikativen und oro-fazialen Kompetenzen als Voraussetzung zur Lautsprachentwicklung sowie die präverbal- und ersten verbal-kommunikativen Kompetenzen. Resultate: Seit Mitte 2003 wurden 15 prälingual ertaubte Kleinkinder erstmals vor einer CI-Operation im Alter zwischen 9 und 38 Monaten logopädisch beurteilt. Die Videoaufzeichnungen wurden analysiert, indem die sprachspezifischen Befunde mittels Auswertungsbogen quantitativ und qualitativ bewertet wurden. Nach der Implantation erfolgten alle sechs Monate logopädische Kontrolluntersuchungen nach demselben Verfahren. Die postoperativen Fortschritte in der Sprachentwicklung der untersuchten Kinder werden aufgezeigt. Diskussion: Mittels standardisierter logopädischer Untersuchung ist es möglich, bereits bei Kleinkindern in den ersten zwei Lebensjahren die Sprachentwicklung zu beurteilen und intra- sowie interindividuell zu vergleichen. Eine frühe logopädische Beurteilung während der sensiblen Phase der Hör- und Sprachentwicklung erlaubt eine bessere Beratung der Eltern und Pädagogen sowie genauere prognostische Aussagen vor und nach einer Cochlea-Implantation.

Abstract

Linsely (1983) has proposed a technique for the detection and analysis of air showers at large distances from the shower axis based on a measurement of the shower front thickness and the assumption that this thickness is closely related to the core distance. Some of the problems involved with realizing such a technique were investigated, and some related observations are reported. The practical problems of how consistent the measurements of the shower front would be, how one would use the measurement, and how the rate of triggered events would depend on the minimum pulse width required are studied.

Abstract

Air shower structure are often measured on time scales of a few nanoseconds. Longitudinal disk structure near the core is of the order of meters in dimension, air Cerenkov pulses have full widths at half maximum of the order of tens of nanoseconds, and fast timing over typical arrays is usually measured to nanosecond accuracy. oscilloscopes can be used but have very limited dynamic range and are expensive if measurements down to a few nanoseconds are to be made. For the fast Cerenkov work, an instrument with better dynamic range than an oscilloscope and with a time resolution sufficient to allow measurements limited only by system risetime of a few nanoseconds is needed. A 16/32 channel, 8 bit, fast transient digitizer was designed and built which runs at sample intervals down to approx. 1 nanosecond per channel.

Abstract

The effects of midenergy electrons on the charge and discharge characteristics of spacecraft dielectric materials and the data base from which basic discharge models can be formulated is expanded. Thin dielectric materials were exposed to low, mid combined low and mid, and spectral energy electron environments. Three important results are presented: (1) it determined electron environments that lead to dielectric discharges at potentials less negative than -5 kV; (2) two types of discharges were identified that dominate the kinds of discharges seen; and (3) it is shown that, for the thin dielectric materials tested, the worst-case discharges observed in the various environments are similar.

Abstract

A directional velocity analyzer has been developed for measuring electron distribution functions in plasmas. It contains a collimating aperture which selects particles from a narrow cone in velocity space and a retarding potential analyzer. The distribution function f(v, theta, phi) is obtained from a large number of analyzer traces taken at different angles theta, phi. In addition, the small analyzer can be moved in space and the measurements are time resolved so as to obtain the complete phase space information f(v,r,t). The large data flow of this seven-variable function is processed with a high-speed digital data-acquisition system. The new electron velocity analyzer is applicable over a wide parameter range in electron energies and densities. Various cases of anisotropic distributions such as beams, shells, tails, and drifts have been successfully investigated.
