1. A 5.3-minute-period pulsing white dwarf in a binary detected from radio to X-rays

Abstract

White dwarf stars are the most common stellar fossils. When in binaries, they make up the dominant form of compact object binary within the Galaxy and can offer insight into different aspects of binary formation and evolution. One of the most remarkable white dwarf binary systems identified to date is AR Scorpii (henceforth AR Sco). AR Sco is composed of an M-dwarf star and a rapidly-spinning white dwarf in a 3.56-hour orbit. It shows pulsed emission with a period of 1.97 minutes over a broad range of wavelengths, which led to it being known as a white dwarf pulsar. Both the pulse mechanism and the evolutionary origin of AR Sco provide challenges to theoretical models. Here we report the discovery of the first sibling of AR Sco, J191213.72-441045.1 (henceforth J1912-4410), which harbours a white dwarf in a 4.03-hour orbit with an M-dwarf and exhibits pulsed emission with a period of 5.30 minutes. Abstract

We present simultaneous, multi-colour optical light curves of the companion star to the black-widow pulsar PSR J2051-0827, obtained approximately 10 years apart using ULTRACAM and HiPERCAM, respectively. The ULTRACAM light curves confirm the previously reported asymmetry in which the leading hemisphere of the companion star appears to be brighter than the trailing hemisphere. The HiPERCAM light curves, however, do not show this asymmetry, demonstrating that whatever mechanism is responsible for it varies on timescales of a decade or less. We fit the symmetrical HiPERCAM light curves with a direct-heating model to derive the system parameters, finding an orbital inclination of $55.9^{+4.8}_{-4.1}$ degrees, in good agreement with radio-eclipse constraints. We find that approximately half of the pulsar's spin-down energy is converted to optical luminosity, resulting in temperatures ranging from approximately $5150^{+190}_{-190}$ K on the day side to $2750^{+130}_{-150}$ K on the night side of the companion star. The companion star is close to filling its Roche lobe ($f_{\rm RL} =0.88^{+0.02}_{-0.02}$) and has a mass of $0.039^{+0.010}_{-0.011}$ M$_{\odot}$, giving a mean density of $20.24^{+0.59}_{-0.44}$ g cm$^{-3}$ and an apsidal motion constant in the range $0.0036 < k_2 < 0.0047$. The companion mass and mean density values are consistent with those of brown dwarfs, but the apsidal motion constant implies a significantly more centrally-condensed internal structure than is typical for such objects., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

Abstract

AR Scorpii (AR Sco) is the only radio-pulsing white dwarf known to date. It shows a broad-band spectrum extending from radio to X-rays whose luminosity cannot be explained by thermal emission from the system components alone, and is instead explained through synchrotron emission powered by the spin-down of the white dwarf. We analysed NTT/ULTRACAM, TNT/ULTRASPEC, and GTC/HiPERCAM high-speed photometric data for AR Sco spanning almost seven years and obtained a precise estimate of the spin frequency derivative, now confirmed with 50-sigma significance. Using archival photometry, we show that the spin down rate of P/Pdot = 5.6e6 years has remained constant since 2005. As well as employing the method of pulse-arrival time fitting used for previous estimates, we also found a consistent value via traditional Fourier analysis for the first time. In addition, we obtained optical time-resolved spectra with WHT/ISIS and VLT/X-shooter. We performed modulated Doppler tomography for the first time for the system, finding evidence of emission modulated on the orbital period. We have also estimated the projected rotational velocity of the M-dwarf as a function of orbital period and found that it must be close to Roche lobe filling. Abstract

Accreting magnetic white dwarfs offer an opportunity to understand the interplay between spin-up and spin-down torques in binary systems. Monitoring of the white dwarf spin may reveal whether the white dwarf spin is currently in a state of near-equilibrium, or of uni-directional evolution towards longer or shorter periods, reflecting the recent history of the system and providing constraints for evolutionary models. This makes the monitoring of the spin history of magnetic white dwarfs of high interest. In this paper we report the results of a campaign of follow-up optical photometry to detect and track the 39 sec white dwarf spin pulses recently discovered in Hubble Space Telescope data of the cataclysmic variable V1460 Her. We find the spin pulsations to be present in g-band photometry at a typical amplitude of 0.4%. Under favourable observing conditions, the spin signal is detectable using 2-meter class telescopes. We measured pulse-arrival times for all our observations, which allowed us to derive a precise ephemeris for the white dwarf spin. We have also derived an orbital modulation correction that can be applied to the measurements. With our limited baseline of just over four years, we detect no evidence yet for spin-up or spin-down of the white dwarf, obtaining a lower limit of |P/Pdot|> 4e7 years, which is already 4 to 8 times longer than the timescales measured in two other cataclysmic variable systems containing rapidly rotating white dwarfs, AE Aqr and AR Sco., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

We present optical photometry of the cataclysmic variable LAMOST J024048.51+195226.9 taken with the high-speed, five-band CCD camera HiPERCAM on the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). We detect pulsations originating from the spin of its white dwarf, finding a spin period of 24.9328(38)s. The pulse amplitude is of the order of 0.2% in the g-band, below the detection limits of previous searches. This detection establishes LAMOST J024048.51+195226.9 as only the second white dwarf magnetic propeller system, a twin of its long-known predecessor, AE Aquarii. At 24.93s, the white dwarf in LAMOST J024048.51+195226.9 has the shortest known spin period of any cataclysmic variable star. The white dwarf must have a mass of at least 0.7MSun to sustain so short a period. The observed faintest u-band magnitude sets an upper limit on the white dwarf's temperature of ~25000K. The pulsation amplitudes measured in the five HiPERCAM filters are consistent with an accretion spot of ~30000K covering ~2% of the white dwarf's visible area, although spots that are hot and smaller, or cooler and larger cannot be ruled out., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

HiPERCAM is a portable, quintuple-beam optical imager that saw first light on the 10.4-m Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC) in 2018. The instrument uses re-imaging optics and 4 dichroic beamsplitters to record $u_s g_s r_s i_s z_s$ ($320-1060$ nm) images simultaneously on its five CCD cameras, each of 3.1 arcmin (diagonal) field of view. The detectors in HiPERCAM are frame-transfer devices cooled thermo-electrically to 183 K, thereby allowing both long-exposure, deep imaging of faint targets, as well as high-speed (over 1000 windowed frames per second) imaging of rapidly varying targets. A comparison-star pick-off system in the telescope focal plane increases the effective field of view to 6.7 arcmin for differential photometry. Combining HiPERCAM with the world's largest optical telescope enables the detection of astronomical sources to $g_s \sim 23$ in 1 s and $g_s \sim 28$ in 1 h. Abstract

Using photometric ULTRACAM observations of three new short period cataclysmic variables, we model the primary eclipse lightcurves to extract the orbital separation, masses, and radii of their component stars. We find donor masses of 0.060 +/- 0.008 solar masses, 0.042 +/- 0.001 solar masses, and 0.042 +/- 0.004 solar masses, two being very low-mass sub-stellar donors, and one within 2 sigma of the hydrogen burning limit. All three of the new systems lie close to the modified, "optimal" model evolutionary sequence of Knigge et al. (2011). We briefly re-evaluate the long-standing discrepancy between observed donor mass and radius data, and theoretical CV evolutionary tracks. By looking at the difference in the observed period at each mass and the period predicted by the Knigge et al. (2011) evolutionary sequence, we qualitatively examine the form of excess angular momentum loss that is missing from the models below the period gap. We show indications that the excess angular momentum loss missing from CV models grows in importance relative to gravitational losses as the period decreases. Abstract

Neurons in the brain behave as a network of coupled nonlinear oscillators processing information by rhythmic activity and interaction. Several technological approaches have been proposed that might enable mimicking the complex information processing of neuromorphic computing, some of them relying on nanoscale oscillators. For example, spin torque oscillators are promising building blocks for the realization of artificial high-density, low-power oscillatory networks (ON) for neuromorphic computing. The local external control and synchronization of the phase relation of oscillatory networks are among the key challenges for implementation with nanotechnologies. Here we propose a new method of phase programming in ONs by manipulation of the saturation magnetization, and consequently the resonance frequency of a single oscillator via Joule heating by a simple DC voltage input. We experimentally demonstrate this method in a pair of stray field coupled magnetic vortex oscillators. Since this method only relies on the oscillatory behavior of coupled oscillators, and the temperature dependence of the saturation magnetization, it allows for variable phase programming in a wide range of geometries and applications that can help advance the efforts of high frequency neuromorphic spintronics up to the GHz regime.

9. Surface abundance and the hunt for stratification in chemically peculiar hot subdwarfs: PG 0909+276 and UVO 0512-08

Abstract

Edelmann (2003) identified two chemically peculiar hot subdwarfs, PG 0909+276 and UVO 0512-08, as having very high overabundances of iron-group elements. We obtained high-resolution ultraviolet spectroscopy in order to measure abundances of species not observable in the optical, and to seek evidence for chemical stratification in the photosphere. Abundances were measured in three wavelength regions; the optical 3900\AA-6900\AA\ range was re-analysed to confirm consistency with Edelmann. Ultraviolet spectra were obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), covering the far-UV (1140\AA-1740\AA) and the near-UV (1740\AA-2500\AA). We computed a grid of theoretical LTE spectra to find basic parameters (effective temperatures, surface gravity, surface hydrogen and helium fractions). We measured abundances using a spectral-synthesis approach in each wavelength range. We confirm that several iron-group metals are highly enriched, including cobalt, copper and zinc, relative to typical sdB stars. We detect gallium, germanium, tin, and lead, similar to analysis of ultraviolet spectra of some other sdB stars. Our results confirm that PG 0909+276 and UVO 0512-08 exhibit peculiarities which make them distinct from both the normal H-rich sdB and intermediate He-rich sdB stars. Abstract

Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected whirls that decay through singular magnetic configurations known as Bloch points. We have used Lorentz transmission electron microscopy to infer the energetics associated with the topological decay of magnetic skyrmions far from equilibrium in the chiral magnet Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Si. We observed that the life time $\tau$ of the skyrmions depends exponentially on temperature, $\tau \sim \tau_0 \, e^{\Delta E/k_B T}$. The prefactor $\tau_0$ of this Arrhenius law changes by more than 30 orders of magnitude for small changes of magnetic field reflecting a substantial reduction of the life time of skyrmions by entropic effects and thus an extreme case of enthalpy-entropy compensation. Abstract

The chiral magnet Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ hosts a skyrmion lattice, that may be equivalently described as a superposition of plane waves or lattice of particle-like topological objects. A thermal gradient may break up the skyrmion lattice and induce rotating domains raising the question which of these scenarios better describes the violent dynamics at the domain boundaries. Here we show that in an inhomogeneous temperature gradient caused by illumination in a Lorentz Transmission Electron Microscope different parts of the skyrmion lattice can be set into motion with different angular velocities. Tracking the time dependence we show that the constant rearrangement of domain walls is governed by dynamic 5-7 defects arranging into lines. An analysis of the associated defect density is described by Frank's equation and agrees well with classical 2D-Monte Carlo simulations. Fluctuations of boundaries show surge-like rearrangement of skyrmion clusters driven by defect rearrangement consistent with simulations treating skyrmions as point particles. 12. Synthesis, theoretical and experimental characterisation of thin film Cu2Sn1-xGexS3 ternary alloys (x = 0 to 1): Homogeneous intermixing of Sn and Ge

Abstract

Cu2Sn1-xGexS3 is a p-type semiconductor alloy currently investigated for use as an absorber layer in thin film solar cells. The aim of this study is to investigate the properties of this alloy in thin film form in order to establish relationships between group IV composition and structural, vibrational and opto-electronic properties. Seven single phase Cu2Sn1-xGexS3 films are prepared from x = 0 to 1, showing a uniform distribution of Ge and Sn laterally and in depth. The films all show a monoclinic crystal structure. The lattice parameters are extracted using Le Bail refinement and show a linear decrease with increasing Ge content. Using density-functional theory with hybrid functionals, we calculate the Raman active phonon frequencies of Cu2SnS3 and Cu2GeS3. For the alloyed compounds, we use a virtual atom approximation. The shift of the main Raman peak from x = 0 to x = 1 can be explained as being half due to the change in atomic masses and half being due to the different bond strength. The bandgaps of the alloys are extracted from photoluminescence measurements and increase linearly from about 0.90 to 1.56 eV with increasing Ge. The net acceptor density of all films is around 1018 cm−3. These analyses have established that the alloy forms a solid solution over the entire composition range meaning that intentional band gap grading should be possible for future absorber layers. The linear variation of the unit cell parameters and the band gap with group IV content allows composition determination by scattering or optical measurements. Further research is required to reduce the doping density by two orders of magnitude in order to improve the current collection within a solar cell device structure.

Abstract

The p-type semiconductorCu2SnS3 is alloyedwithAg to investigate its effect on absorber layer and solar cell properties. Ag replaces the Cu in (Cu1-xAgx)2SnS3 (ACTS) up to x ≥ 6% at 550 °C. Above this percentage, Ag forms secondary phases.We find a significant increase in grain size, from hundreds of nanometers to severalmicrons, and increased photoluminescence yield with increasing Ag concentration. Low-temperature photoluminescence measurements show that compensation is increased for the ACTS absorber layers, which could be beneficial for CTS, but also that the electrostatic band gap fluctuations are increased. The external quantum efficiency of the solar cells made from ACTS shows an increased carrier collection length from 320 nm for CTS to 700 nm and a thicker buffer layer. We attribute the increase in collection length to both increased depletion width (increased compensation) and diffusion length (larger grains). Overall the ACTS solar cells have a lower power conversion efficiency due to lower shunt resistance and open-circuit voltage, which are attributed to increase in pinholes, electrostatic fluctuation, and changes at the CdS/ACTS interface.

This analysis evaluated the effect of naldemedine 0.2 mg on patient-reported outcomes in three phase 3 clinical studies.Methods: COMPOSE-1 and COMPOSE-2 were identical randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group studies of 12 weeks’ duration, allowing data to be integrated (n=1095). COMPOSE-3 was similar in design, but of 52 weeks’ duration (n=1241). Patients were adults with chronic non-cancer pain who had been treated with opioid analgesics for ≥ 3 months and experiencing opioid-induced constipation. Patient-reported outcomes included Patient Assessment of Constipation Symptoms (PAC-SYM; 12 questions assessed on a 5-point Likert scale), PAC-QOL (28 questions assessed on a 5-point Likert scale), and Subject Global Satisfaction (measured on a 7-point Likert scale). The proportion of patients achieving a ≥ 1.5 improvement in PAC-SYM and PAC-QOL was calculated. The correlation between change in PAC-SYM and PAC-QOL scores and frequency of bowel movements was also explored.Results: The proportion of PAC-SYM and PAC-QOL responders was significantly higher for naldemedine than for placebo at all assessed time points in COMPOSE-1/COMPOSE-2 (p< 0.005 for both) and COMPOSE-3 (p< 0.005 and p< 0.0001, respectively). There was a statistically significant correlation between improvement in PAC-SYM/PAC-QOL and frequency of bowel movements at all time points (p≤ 0.0002). 15. Optoelectronic and spectroscopic characterization of vapour-transport grown Cu2ZnSnS4 single crystals

Abstract

Single crystals of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) have been grown by iodine vapor transport with and without addition of NaI. Crystals with tin-rich copper-poor and with zinc-rich copper-poor stoichiometries were obtained. The crystals were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, photocurrent spectroscopy and electroreflectance spectroscopy using electrolyte contacts as well as by spectroscopic ellipsometry, Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL)/decay. Near-resonance Raman spectra indicate that the CZTS crystals adopt the kesterite structure with near-equilibrium residual disorder. The corrected external quantum efficiency of the p-type crystals measured by photocurrent spectroscopy approaches 100% close to the bandgap energy, indicating efficient carrier collection. The bandgap of the CZTS crystals estimated from the external quantum efficiency spectrum measured using an electrolyte contact was found to be 1.64-1.68 eV. An additional sub-bandgap photocurrent response (Urbach tail) was attributed to sub bandgap defect states. The room temperature PL of the crystals was attributed to radiative recombination via tail states, with lifetimes in the nanosecond range. At high excitation intensities, the PL spectrum also showed evidence of direct band to band transitions at ∼1.6 eV with a shorter decay time. Electrolyte electroreflectance spectra and spectra of the third derivative of the optical dielectric constant in the bandgap region were fitted to two optical transitions at 1.71 and 1.81 eV suggesting a larger valence band splitting than predicted theoretically. The high values of the EER broadening parameters (192 meV) indicate residual disorder consistent with the existence of tail states.

Background: A responsive and innovative postgraduate programme curriculum that produces an effective and competent multi professional healthcare leader whom can lead within the United Kingdom (UK) and international healthcare context offers a promising approach to contributing towards the challenging global healthcare agenda. Aims: The aim of the study is to evaluate the impact of utilising constructive alignment curricular methodology incorporating the Patchwork Text Assessment on the healthcare leadership development of UK and international postgraduate students. Design: Case study design, incorporating Kirkpatrick's Five Levels of Evaluation Model. Settings and Participants: 12 post graduate students (multi-professional, UK and international) studying on a healthcare leadership and management programme at one UK University in the North West of England. Methods: Retrieval of the critical commentary produced and submitted by students as part of the Patchwork Text Assessment process Data Analysis: Thematic content analysis approach. Results: Four key themes emerged demonstrating how the success of constructive alignment and the Patchwork Text Assessment in promoting deep learning for UK and international postgraduate healthcare leadership students is underpinned by principles of good practice and these include: a) Curriculum planners incorporating work based learning activities into the generated learning activities; b) Curriculum planners creating the best learning environment so the student can achieve the learning activities; c) Providing the learning activities that reflect the real world of healthcare leadership; d) Providing students with opportunities to contextualise theory and practice through relevant patchwork activity and learning activities; e) Equipping students with the transferable postgraduate skills (through learning activities and patch working) to embark on a journey of lifelong learning and continuous professional development; f) Targeting the postgraduate programme /module intended learning outcomes and assessment patches against contemporary leadership qualities frameworks; g) Providing students with opportunities to reflect in multi- professional groups that remain constant in terms of facilitator and supervisor; and h) Creating the learning opportunities for students to apply their learning to their own healthcare organisation.

Abstract

We believe that names have a powerful influence on the experiments we do and the way in which we think. For this reason, and in the light of new evidence about the function and evolution of the vertebrate brain, an international consortium of neuroscientists has reconsidered the traditional, 100-year-old terminology that is used to describe the avian cerebrum. Our current understanding of the avian brain - in particular the neocortex-like cognitive functions of the avian pallium - requires a new terminology that better reflects these functions and the homologies between avian and mammalian brains.

Abstract

Within the European project AFLoNext, one of the technological streams is dedicated to the investigation of active flow control (AFC) to increase the robustness of the wing tip design at takeoff conditions, whilst allowing the optimization of aerodynamic efficiency in cruise. AFC is used to delay the wing tip stall, which is caused by vortex breakdown, thus improving the lift to drag ratio and allowing a steeper climb gradient during second segment climb when the landing gear is retracted. The numerical parametric studies of AFC aerodynamic sizing were shared between the involved partners on the basis of actuator location (in the leading edge region or on the upper surface) and actuator types (steady blowing, synthetic jets, pulsed jets). Most of the numerical results have been obtained for steady blowing through continuous or segmented slots. The specific effect of the unsteady means of actuation on the flow topology was also identified. The aim of this study was to take into account industrial requirements defined by Airbus and geometric constraints of AFC actuators arising from the project partners involved in the development of AFC hardware. Some comparisons between the partners’ results are presented, allowing preliminary conclusions to be drawn. The most effective and efficient device turned out to be pulsed blowing through segmented slots located at the leading edge separation line.

Abstract

Sleep disturbance is common following hospital admission both for COVID-19 and other causes. The clinical associations of this for recovery after hospital admission are poorly understood despite sleep disturbance contributing to morbidity in other scenarios. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and nature of sleep disturbance after discharge following hospital admission for COVID-19 and to assess whether this was associated with dyspnoea.
