Abstract

Spin and charge transport through a quantum dot coupled to external nonmagnetic leads is analyzed theoretically in terms of the non-equilibrium Green function formalism based on the equation of motion method. The dot is assumed to be subject to spin and charge bias, and the considerations are focused on the Kondo effect in spin and charge transport. It is shown that the differential spin conductance as a function of spin bias reveals a typical zero-bias Kondo anomaly which becomes split when either magnetic field or charge bias are applied. Significantly different behavior is found for mixed charge/spin conductance. The influence of electron-phonon coupling in the dot on tunneling current as well as on both spin and charge conductance is also analyzed., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures

Spin-polarized transport through a quantum dot strongly coupled to ferromagnetic electrodes with non-collinear magnetic moments is analyzed theoretically in terms of the non-equilibrium Green function formalism. Electrons in the dot are assumed to be coupled to a phonon bath. The influence of electron-phonon coupling on tunnelling current, linear and nonlinear conductance, and on tunnel magnetoresistance is studied in detail. Abstract

Non-equilibrium Green's function technique has been used to calculate spin-dependent electronic transport through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime. The dot is described by the Anderson Hamiltonian and is coupled either symmetrically or asymmetrically to ferromagnetic leads, whose magnetic moments are noncollinear. It is shown that the splitting of the zero bias Kondo anomaly in differential conductance decreases monotonically with increasing angle between magnetizations, and for antiparallel configuration it vanishes in the symmetrical case while remains finite in the asymmetrical one., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

Nonequilibrium electronic transport through a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads (electrodes) is studied theoretically by the nonequilibrium Green function technique. The system is described by the Anderson model with arbitrary correlation parameter $U$. Exchange interaction between the dot and ferromagnetic electrodes is taken into account {\it via} an effective molecular field. The following situations are analyzed numerically: (i) the dot is symmetrically coupled to two ferromagnetic leads, (ii) one of the two ferromagnetic leads is half-metallic with almost total spin polarization of electron states at the Fermi level, and (iii) one of the two electrodes is nonmagnetic whereas the other one is ferromagnetic. Generally, the Kondo peak in the density of states (DOS) becomes spin-split when the total exchange field acting on the dot is nonzero. The spin-splitting of the Kondo peak in DOS leads to splitting and suppression of the corresponding zero bias anomaly in the differential conductance., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Spin-dependent transport through an interacting single-level quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads with non-collinear magnetizations is analyzed theoretically. The transport properties and average spin of the dot are investigated within the nonequilibrium Green function technique based on the equation of motion in the Hartree-Fock approximation. Numerical results show that Coulomb correlations on the dot and strong spin polarization of the leads significantly enhance precession of the average dot spin around the effective molecular field created by the external electrodes. Moreover, they also show that spin precession may lead to negative differential conductance in the voltage range between the two relevant threshold voltages. Nonmonotonous angular variation of electric current and change in sign of the tunnel magnetoresistance are also found. It is also shown that the diode-like behavior in asymmetrical junctions with one electrode being half-metallic is significantly reduced in noncollinear configurations., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, changed content, updated references

Abstract

In Part I of this article, we present our data collected over the past 8 years on the clinical evaluations of pediatric brain tumors with an emphasis placed on the more common neoplasms. Our data consists of 385 children ranging in age from newborn to 18 years. The majority of children presented with signs of raised intracranial pressure (including nausea, vomiting, and headaches), seizures or other focal neurologic deficits. Five percent of our children presented to outlying hospitals with symptoms that retrospectively turned out to be due to brain neoplasms but were misdiagnosed as "gastroenteritis," "viral upper respiratory tract infection," or even viral meningitis. These delays in diagnosis can cause serious negative outcomes for these patients and can be avoided through more careful neurologic and ophthalmologic examination at the time of first presentation. Central nervous system neoplasms are not uncommon in children and any child presenting with nausea, vomiting, and headaches should raise the suspicion of a primary brain tumor and should receive both a thorough neurologic exam and screening for papilledema. If papilledema is present, these children should be referred for proper neuroradiologic evaluation (which will be addressed in Part II.

Abstract

This article reports the results of clinical testing in pediatric patients of a new contrast agent, gadoteridol injection (ProHance), developed by Squibb Diagnostic as a nonionic gadolinium agent for use in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Thirteen children (four girls and nine boys) ranging in age from 10 to 18 years were enrolled in the study. The children had MR studies of the brain and/or spine with T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and postgadoteridol injection T1-weighted sequences. Five children had primary brain or spine neoplasms, three children had metastatic disease to the central nervous system, one child had a recurrent brain neoplasm and spinal canal metastasis, one child had an arteriovenous malformation, and two children were normal on the MRI studies. No minor or major reactions to gadoteridol injection developed in the 13 patients. Gadoteridol injection provided excellent delineation and enhancement of the arteriovenous malformation and all of the primary and secondary neoplasms of the central nervous system except for one case of a grade 1 glioma of the midbrain. Gadoteridol injection is a safe and excellent contrast agent for use in MRI.

Abstract

Published epidemiologic data on the administration rates of enteral/parenteral home nutrition is very limited. The aim of this first nationwide study was to assess the availability of pediatric home enteral nutrition (HEN) services in Poland. The questionnaire was sent to all regional centers providing pediatric HEN services in Poland (n = 14). The analysis included the number of pediatric patients who received HEN in 2010, their demographic characteristics and geographical distribution. Furthermore, the distributions of indications and methods of enteral nutrition administration were analyzed, along with the reasons of withdrawal from the HEN program. The number and fraction of children receiving HEN increased in 2010, from 433 (11.34 per 1 million inhabitants) on January 1st to 525 (13.75) on December 31st. Marked differences were observed in geographical distribution of this parameter, from zero to up to 30 pediatric patients per 1 million inhabitants. Median age of patients was 6 years (range: 9 months-18 years). In most cases, HEN was prescribed due to neurological disorders (n = 337, 64.2%), and administered by means of gastrostomy (n = 450, 85.71%). This study revealed the dynamic development of pediatric HEN services in Poland but also documented their potential regional shortages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Reinforcement of the tooth belts is the element responsible for the transmission of the torque. Its structure is related to the dynamics of the belt and such important parameters as the stiffness of running stability on pulleys and above all, the pitch stability. The axis of symmetry of the reinforcement in the vertical direction of the belt is the reference point of the belt geometry as well as the neutral axis of stresses caused by bending. On the arc of the contact between belt and pulley, over the reinforcement, the belt is stretched, and below it is compressed. In the tooth belts, there are various solutions of the carrier layer, in terms of the materials used, but also types of fibers, quantity of the fibers, etc. The paper presents the results of analysis of the carrier layer of the most popular tooth belts with T10 and AT10 trapezoidal teeth. The paper shows possible direction of choice of the construction materials of the carrier layer and their importance for the dynamics of the gear with the tooth belt.

Abstract

The paper deals with the problem of timing belt pitch significance for the dynamics of a timing belt transmission gear motion. Specific pitches of timing belts have been used for many years. They were previously reserved for belts made of rubber, while another group of pitches was intended for belts made of polyurethane. This division ceased to apply recently, and in addition there are belts with pitches which have not been used before, such as HTD9M or AT15. The paper presents the parameter that makes the pulley diameter and the pitch dependent on the number of teeth involved in meshing (coupling) with a pulley. It is an equivalent of the coverage factor occurring in cylindrical timing gears. Earlier studies on that parameter did not take into account the teeth unevenly spaced over the width of the belt. New pitches of belts may occur in "mass production" applications and they are applied more and more often. Thus it is important to bear in mind the consequences of changing the pitch of the timing belt in transmission gear structures.

Abstract

This paper presents the problem of phenomena occurring at the contact of a timing belt and a pulley. Depending on a belt size range these phenomena differ significantly. There is no indication as to what solutions are optimal for drive belts. The analysis of the coupling process and performance tests have shown that the drive belt should have a cord of very good mechanical properties and its raceway side should be made from the material of a low friction coefficient against the pulley material. A flat belt in power transmission and conveying systems cooperates with several elements consisting of timing pulleys, tensioners or guiding rails. In gear with timing belts they depend strongly on characteristics of the process as well as the type of friction. In recent constructions, producers of timing belts are very much concerned about achieving as much slippery surface as possible. The work describes the problem of friction on different surfaces as well as its influence on gear lifetime. Research results confirm that on many surfaces bigger coefficient of friction is expected.

The paper deals with the problem of volumetric wear of timing pulleys. The authors analyze the course of this phenomenon depending on the properties of the belt-pulley friction pair. Timing belts are made of various materials, including additional coating layers, similarly to pulleys. The gear operation problem consists in modelling the pulley life for specific gear materials. The authors made also an attempt to investigate the rate of this phenomenon and its impact on the kinematic efficiency of the transmission gear with timing belts.

Abstract

Introduction: One anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) is one option of a revisional procedure for failed sleeve gastrectomy. Moreover, it can be used as a primary bariatric procedure, and is an effective surgery resulting in significant weight loss and the resolution or improvement of obesity-associated medical problems, accompanied by low perioperative complications. However, as with any therapy, OAGB has its limitations, including micronutrient deficiency or malnutrition. In our study, we compared the fatty acid (FA) profile in serum of patients after both primary OAGB (pOAGB) and revisional OAGB (rOAGB) to identify potential postsurgical FA alterations., Methods: This is a retrospective study on patients with obesity who underwent OAGB procedures (pOAGB n=68; rOAGB n=17), conducted from 2016 to 2018. In blood, we analyzed a series of biochemical parameters, and in the serum, the FA profile was determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry., Results: The percentage of excess BMI loss (% EBMIL) after pOAGB was 73.5 ± 2.47% in comparison to 45.9 ± 4.15% in the rOAGB group (p<0.001). In contrast to the lack of effect of rOAGB on most polyunsaturated FAs, in the pOAGB group, there was a decrease in eicosapentaenoic acid, and eicosatetraenoic and docosahexaenoic acid levels (p<0.001). We also found a decrease in very long-chain FAs (VLCFAs) and an increase in branched-chain FAs (BCFAs) after both types of OAGB procedure., Conclusions: Both OAGB procedures improved the profile of most FAs, leading to a decrease in VLCFAs, which are considered harmful, and an improvement in BCFAs, which are considered to be beneficial. There is a need to further investigate the possibility of n-3 polyunsaturated FA supplementation after pOAGB, due to the large decrease in these FAs after pOAGB., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Abstract

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of the corneal tunnel length on surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) after 3 phacoemulsification techniques., Methods: Patients who underwent a planned phacoemulsification surgery with an implantation of a foldable, acrylic IOL were selected for the study. All surgeries were performed under topical anaesthesia, with the same phaco machine. Group I consisted of 30 eyes of 30 patients after bimanual 1.4 mm microincision cataract surgery (B-MICS). Group II consisted of 30 eyes of 30 patients after coaxial 1.8 mm microincision cataract surgery (C-MICS). Group III consisted of 30 eyes of 30 patients after coaxial 2.4 mm small incision cataract surgery (C-SICS).Best corrected visual acuity, autorefractometry, tonometry, a slit lamp examination and anterior segment OCT were performed preoperatively and 1, 7, 30 and 90 days postoperatively. The temporal peripheral corneal thickness and the chord length of the main incision were measured. Vector method was used to calculate SIA., Results: Mean preoperative BCVA was 0.52 ± 0.19 and it improved to 0.98 ± 0.05 (p < 0.05). Mean corneal tunnel chord length was 1.30 ± 0.16 mm 90 days postoperatively in group I, 1.30 ± 0.19 mm in group II and 1.48 ± 0.22 mm in group III. SIA was 0.54 ± 0.48 mm in group I, 0.45 ± 0.21 mm in group II and 0.62 ± 0.30 mm in group III. There were no correlations between the chord length of the corneal tunnel and SIA calculated with using vector analysis method., Conclusions: Unlike the incision width, the length of the clear corneal tunnel in small incisions and microinicions, has no significant influence on SIA.
