Abstract

Selected physical and spectroscopic properties of O-(n-butyl)-S-(2-diethylaminoethyl) methylphosphonothiolate, identified in this report as EA 6043, were determined and are reported herein. The title compound is a structural isomer of VX [O-ethyl-S-(2-diisopropylaminoethyl) methylphosphonothiolate] and Russian VX [O-isobutyl-S-(2-diethylaminoethyl) methylphosphonothiolate]; and as such, it is also an extremely potent acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Density, viscosity, surface tension, and vapor pressure for EA 6043 were measured. These properties were correlated to temperature to provide the basis for interpolation and extrapolation of the measured data. Temperature-dependent volatility and heat of vaporization and entropy of vaporization were calculated for EA 6043 on the basis of correlations to the vapor pressure data. Comparisons of selected properties of the structural isomers are provided when possible. Electron impact mass; 1H, 13C, and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance; Fourier transform infrared; and Raman spectra are reported for EA 6043., The original document contains color images.

26. Biomolecule Raman spectral temporal flux from resting bacillus spores in deionized water matrix

Abstract

Raman microspectroscopy and principal component analysis are used to decipher unique biomolecular information by monitoring the effect of residence time of Bacillus spores suspended in deionized water. Suspensions of viable spores of Bacillus anthracis Sterne (BA), Bacillus atrophaeus (BG), and Bacillus thuringiensis were prepared and spectrally monitored from initial deposition (time zero) and intermittently for seven days. Questions addressed include if spectral variations are significant with bacterial species and residence time under non-germination conditions, is the discrimination capability affected, and are there markers indicating pre-germination activity. Clear spectral distinction for the spore suspensions was observed with respect to residence time, however, when the residence time data were combined, discrimination analyses showed significant overlap between the BA and BG spores. Temporal spectral analyses at select wavenumbers suggest an increase in pre-germination activity from the freshly suspended to one day suspensions.

29. Proximal and point detection of contaminated surfaces using Raman spectroscopy

Abstract

We are actively investigating the use of Raman spectroscopy for proximal standoff detection of chemicals and explosive materials on surfaces. These studies include Raman Chemical Imaging of contaminated fingerprints for forensic attribution and the assessments of commercial handheld or portable Raman instruments operating with near-infrared (IR) as well as ultraviolet (UV) laser excitation specifically developed for on-the-move reconnaissance of chemical contamination. As part of these efforts, we have measured the Raman cross sections of chemical agents, toxic industrial chemicals, and explosives from the UV to NIR. We have also measured and modeled the effect interrogation angle has on the Raman return from droplets on man-made surfaces. Realistic droplet distributions have been modeled and tested against variations in surface scan patterns and laser spot size for determining the optimum scan characteristics for detection of relevant surface contamination.

30. Foundry-based waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy in the visible.

Abstract

Waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (WERS) is an analytical technique frequently employed for chemical and biological sensing. Operation at visible wavelengths to harness the inverse fourth power with excitation wavelength signal scaling of Raman scattering intensity is desirable, to combat the inherent inefficiency of Raman spectroscopy. Until now, WERS demonstrations in the visible have required custom materials and fabrication, resulting in high losses and low yields. In this work, we demonstrate a silicon nitride (SIN) visible WERS platform fabricated in a 300 mm complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) foundry. We measure the propagation loss, coupling loss, WERS signal, and background for WERS spirals designed for 532 nm and 633 nm pump wavelengths. We compare these results to the state-of-the-art near-infrared WERS platform at 785 nm. Further, we theoretically validate the relative performance of each of these WERS configurations, and we discuss the optimal WERS configuration at visible wavelengths. We conclude that a configuration optimized for 785 nm pumping provides the greatest signal-to-background ratio in the fingerprint region of the spectrum, and pumping at 633 nm maximizes Stokes signal out to 3000 cm -1 .
