Opierając się na przechowywanej w Archiwum Narodowym w Krakowie spuściźnie naukowej M. Friedberga, udało się prześledzić jego zaangażowanie na polu dydaktyki, podstawę źródłową uzupełniono o materiały zgromadzone w Archiwum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego oraz o wydane drukiem spisy wykładów realizowanych na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim. Analiza zachowanych archiwaliów umożliwiła omówienie zaangażowania Profesora w wykłady skierowane do studentów Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego oraz te dla archiwistów, a także w organizację kursów edytorskich przygotowanych przez archiwum w Krakowie. M. Friedberg prowadził szereg wykładów akademickich, których tematyka skupiona była wokół różnych zagadnień wchodzących w skład nauk pomocniczych historii i archiwistyki. Osobno omówiono wkład M. Friedberga w kształcenie przyszłych archiwistów.

Abstract In recent years, the use of light to selectively and precisely activate drugs has been developed along the fundamental concepts of photopharmacology. One of the key methods in this field relies on transiently silencing the drug activity with photocleavable protecting groups (PPGs). To effectively utilize light‐activated drugs in future medical applications, physicians will require a reliable method to assess whether light penetrates deep enough into the tissues to activate the photoresponsive theragnostic agents. Here, we describe the development and evaluation of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging agents that allow for the detection of light penetration and drug activation in the tissues using non‐invasive whole‐body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST)‐MRI modalities. The approach relies on the use of PPG‐protected MR contrast agents, which upon irradiation with light change their imaging signal. A Gadolinium(III)‐based MRI contrast agent is presented that undergoes a significant change in relaxivity (25%) upon uncaging, providing a reliable indicator of light‐induced cargo release. Additionally, we introduce the first light‐responsive CEST‐MRI imaging agent, enabling positive signal enhancement (off‐to‐on) upon light activation, offering a novel approach to visualize the activation of photoactive agents in living tissues. This research provides a proof‐of‐principle for the non‐invasive, whole‐body imaging of light penetration and drug activation with high temporal resolution characteristic of MR methods.

Judgment of the Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights of 14 March 2023 in the case of Georgiou v. Greece, Application No. 57378/18 In March 2023, the European Court of Human Rights issued a judgment concerning the former President of the Greek Statistical Office. The case was described as a test of the Greek justice system, and the issue at stake was the reliability of published statistics relating to the functioning of both the national and the Community economy. Andreas Georgiou was President of ELSTAT, the Greek equivalent of the Polish Central Statistical Office, from 2010 to 2015. In its first year of office, it provided the European Statistical Office with statistics relating to the budget deficit in Greece for 2009. According to Greek law, the competence to make statistics public rested with the Executive Board of ELSTAT, not with the President himself. The Greek authorities accused him of having committed the offence of abuse of power. Georgiou, on the other hand, claimed that he had acted in accordance with the principles of the European Statistical Code of Practice. It provides that the heads of statistical offices are solely responsible for decisions on the content and timing of the publication of statistical information. The defendant faced up to 10 years in prison. The Court of First Instance found Georgiou not guilty. However, the court of second instance sentenced him to two years imprisonment. The Court of Cassation rejected the appeal against the judgment of the Court of Appeal without, however, referring to the defendant’s objections relating to the need to refer a question to the Court of Justice of the EU for a preliminary ruling. Before the sentence came into force, Georgiou left for the United States. In the present judgment, the ECtHR found a violation of the Convention. The judgment is expected to restore confidence in Greek statistics and demonstrate the independence of the statistical office from pressure from the authorities.

Abstract Background Pretargeted immuno-PET tumor imaging has emerged as a valuable diagnostic strategy that combines the high specificity of antibody-antigen interaction with the high signal and image resolution offered by short-lived PET isotopes, while reducing the irradiation dose caused by traditional 89Zr-labelled antibodies. In this work, we demonstrate proof of concept of a novel ‘two-step’ immuno-PET pretargeting approach, based on bispecific antibodies (bsAbs) engineered to feature dual high-affinity binding activity for a fluorescein-based 18F-PET tracer and tumor markers. Results A copper(I)-catalysed click reaction-based radiolabeling protocol was developed for the synthesis of fluorescein-derived molecule [ 18 F]TPF. Binding of [ 18 F]TPF on FITC-bearing bsAbs was confirmed. An in vitro autoradiography assay demonstrated that [ 18 F]TPF could be used for selective imaging of EpCAM-expressing OVCAR3 cells, when pretargeted with EpCAMxFITC bsAb. The versatility of the pretargeting approach was showcased in vitro using a series of fluorescein-binding bsAbs directed at various established cancer-associated targets, including the pan-carcinoma cell surface marker EpCAM, EGFR, melanoma marker MCSP (aka CSPG4), and immune checkpoint PD-L1, offering a range of potential future applications for this pretargeting platform. Conclusion A versatile pretargeting platform for PET imaging, which combines bispecific antibodies and a fluorescein-based 18F-tracer, is presented. It is shown to selectively target EpCAM-expressing cells in vitro and its further evaluation with different bispecific antibodies demonstrates the versatility of the approach.

The development of modern manufacturing technologies related to the ongoing industrial revolution Industry 4.0, is largely related to the dynamic development of materials chemistry. This means that currently 3D printing technologies allow the production of physical models using newer materials with better properties and application in new industrial sectors. The article presents the results of tribological tests of the bio-medical material under the trade name MED610, which shows biocompatibility for medical and dental purposes. The paper presents the results of measurements of tribological models of samples designed and manufactured in the shape of rings. Using the variable friction parameters, the wear process was described in the pressure-rotational speed (P-V) system. Moreover, the friction coefficient and wear measured by using the linear method were analyzed. The paper also presents a metrological analysis carried out with the application of an optical profilometer on the surface of the samples after pressing at the contact point of the surface during the test. The preliminary review of the test results showed that the MED610 material exhibited relatively good abrasion resistance. However, it cannot be employed for heavily loaded friction nodes, and in the PV diagram even at a relatively small value, the sample models were destroyed.

IntroductionHealthcare workers (HCWs) from the beginning of the pandemic have been at risk of exposure to SARS-CoV-2, so they were vaccinated as first.ObjectivesThe purpose of the study was to determine the level of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in HCWs before and after vaccination with mRNA preparations according to previous COVID- 19.Patients and methodsThe HCWs from the University Hospital in Krakow completed two surveys: the baseline survey before receiving the first dose of vaccine (in January 2021) and the follow-up survey in June 2021. In parallel, two blood samples were collected from each participant at baseline and at follow-up. Total anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels were measured using the ECLIA technique.ResultsAt baseline, 41.1% of HCWs had positive antibody test results, and at follow-up, the vaccinated HCWs had almost 100 times higher antibody levels than the unvaccinated HCWs. Participants under 30 years of age had significantly higher antibody levels in June than older HCWs. Among participants with positive antibody test results in January, HCWs who had experienced asymptomatic COVID-19 had more than five times higher antibody levels in June than HCWs self-reported severe COVID-19. In total, 86.9% of HCWs received Comirnaty or Spikevax. The incidence rate of COVID-19 in the unvaccinated vs. vaccinated group was 13 times higher, 20.5% and 1.9% respectively.ConclusionsThese results confirm the effectiveness of vaccination in the prevention of COVID-19 in HCWs. It is worth getting vaccinated regardless of previous infection. Furthermore, vaccination among HCWs under 30 years of age induced more effective antibody production compared to older individuals.

The molecular imaging of biomarkers plays an increasing role in medical diagnostics. In particular, the imaging of enzyme activity is a promising approach, as it enables the use of its inherent catalytic activity for the amplification of an imaging signal. The increased activity of a sulfatase enzyme has been observed in several types of cancers. We describe the development and in vitro evaluation of molecular imaging agents that allow for the detection of sulfatase activity using the whole-body, non-invasive MRI and CEST imaging methods. This approach relies on a responsive ligand that features a sulfate ester moiety, which upon sulfatase-catalyzed hydrolysis undergoes an elimination process that changes the functional group, coordinating with the metal ion. When Gd3+ is used as the metal, the complex can be used for MRI, showing a 25% decrease at 0.23T and a 42% decrease at 4.7T in magnetic relaxivity after enzymatic conversion, thus providing a “switch-off” contrast agent. Conversely, the use of Yb3+ as the metal leads to a “switch-on” effect in the CEST imaging of sulfatase activity. Altogether, the results presented here provide a molecular basis and a proof-of-principle for the magnetic imaging of the activity of a key cancer biomarker.

Celem artykułu jest nie tylko zwrócenie uwagi na wybrane aspekty nauczania historii osób z dysfunkcją wzroku – niewidomych i niedowidzących, ale również ukazanie w jaki sposób można wyjaśnić złożoną historię XX w. na podstawie umocnień pochodzących z czasów II wojny światowej. Warto podkreślić, że w czasie zorganizowanych specjalnych wycieczek tematycznych, podczas których można zobaczyć, dotknąć umocnień, schronów bojowych, posiadamy wyjątkową możliwość objaśniania różnych aspektów związanych z czasami II wojny światowej. Następnie uwaga zostanie poświęcona pewnemu fragmentowi umocnień wchodzących w skład Obszaru Warownego „Śląsk”, który powstał w latach 30. XX w.

Here, the authors develop a visible light-responsive inhibitor of casein kinase I which controls the period and phase of cellular and tissue circadian rhythms in a reversible manner.

The aim of the article is to familiarize the reader with sermons delivered during World War II by Marcin Chrostowski OP, chaplain of the Polish Armed Forces in the West. Father Chrostowski’s legacy of sermons, stored in the Archive of the Polish Province of the Dominican Order, is an interesting supplement to information we currently hold on his service as chaplain of the Polish Armed Forces. The sermons reflect the spirit of his times and also present the morale of the military. Studying them allows us to capture moral attitudes preached to soldiers. This edition contains sermons delivered in Great Britain (Scotland), the USSR (where Fr. Chrostowski accompanied the field bishop during his official visit with the Polish forces), Iraq, the Holy Land, the Netherlands, Belgium, and the Reich. To date, these sermons have not been commonly known, although selected passages were published in Chrostowski’s printed biography (see H. Gallus, E. Mikołajczak, Ojciec Marcin Chrostowski, Poznań 2001). The remaining texts have yet not been analyzed by researchers. Father Marcin Chrostowski volunteered for the army in France, where he was staying at the outbreak of the war. Later, he became chaplain of the Polish Armed Forces in the West – in France and Great Britain, secretary of Field Bishop Gawlina, with whom he travelled to the USSR. After his service in the Holy Land, he was transferred to Great Britain, where he joined the ranks of General Maczek’s 1st Armored Division. As chaplain of the 9th Rifle Battalion, he followed the battle trail from “Maczuga” to Wilhelmshaven. Notably, he was rewarded for his heroism during the hostilities at Baarle Nassan with the War Order of Virtuti Militari.

Celem tekstu było ukazanie potencjału dydaktycznego przedmiotów zaliczanych do tzw. sztuki okopowej. Sztuka okopowa została najtrafniej zdefiniowana przez Nicholasa J. Saundersa. Wedle niego są to wszystkie przedmioty wykonane przez żołnierzy, a także jeńców bądź cywilów, z materiałów używanych przez armie w terenie lub czasie związanym z konfliktem zbrojnym lub jego następstwami. Przedmioty tworzone przez żołnierzy i cywilów w czasie II wojny światowej umożliwiają ukazanie wojennego życia codziennego, jak również konsekwencji wynikających ze zniszczeń wojennych. W tym celu omówiono przykłady przedmiotów tworzonych np. z elementów broni rakietowej V-1, V-2, części broni pancernej. Następnie zwrócono uwagę na możliwość ukazania różnych aspektów głównych dwudziestowiecznych konfliktów zbrojnych osobom z dysfunkcją wzroku, albowiem przedmioty sztuki okopowej są wyjątkowo łatwe do percepcji za pomocą zmysłu dotyku.

The design of photoswitches which operate in the visible light regime, show a large separation of absorption bands and are functional in various solvents is challenging. Here the authors report Iminothioindoxyls as visible-light operated photoswitches with a band separation of 100 nm.

The aim of this essay was to present the catalogue of priors of the Domi­nican Monastery in Oświęcim. The subject of analysis was the oldest pre­served catalogue of priors, kept in the collections of Dominican archive in Cracow – this particular catalogue was set down at the beginning of the 17th century. The other most important sources concerning the history of the Oświęcim Dominicans were also discussed, works that can be found in ar­chives in Cracow, Wrocław, Lviv and Rome. Among the Oświęcim priors, one can find Father Mikołaj Ursinus, who was behind the plan to divide the Polish province into two. One can also find royal confessors, preachers at Wawel Cathedral, and figures who likewise served as prior of Cracow’s Dominican monastery. One of the priors was Father Leonard Niezabitowski, who, according to Dominican tradition, translated the Bible into Polish.

Objective: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection may alter a stroke course; thus, we compared stroke course during subsequent pandemic waves in a stroke unit (SU) from a hospital located in a rural area.Methods: A retrospective study included all patients consecutively admitted to the SU between March 15 and May 31, 2020 (“first wave”), and between September 15 and November 30, 2020 (“second wave”). We compared demographic and clinical data, treatments, and outcomes of patients between the first and the second waves of the pandemic and between subjects with and without COVID-19.Results: During the “first wave,” 1.4% of 71 patients were hospitalized due to stroke/TIA, and 41.8% of 91 during the “second wave” were infected with SARS-CoV-2 (p < 0.001). During the “second wave,” more SU staff members were infected with COVID-19 than during the “first wave” (45.6 vs. 8.7%, p < 0.001). Nevertheless, more patients underwent intravenous thrombolysis (26.4 vs. 9.9%, p < 0.008) and endovascular thrombectomy (5.3 vs. 0.0%, p < 0.001) during the second than the first wave. Large vessel occlusion (LVO) (OR 8.74; 95% CI 1.60–47.82; p = 0.012) and higher 30-day mortality (OR 6.01; 95% CI 1.04–34.78; p = 0.045) were associated with patients infected with COVID-19. No differences regarding proportions between ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes and TIAs between both waves or subgroups with and without COVID-19 existed.Conclusion: Despite the greater COVID-19 infection rate among both SU patients and staff during the “second wave” of the pandemic, a higher percentage of reperfusion procedures has been performed then. COVID-19 infection was associated with a higher rate of the LVO and 30-day mortality.

Przedmiotem opracowania jest edycja źródła przybliżającego życie religijne oficerów Polskich Sił Zbrojnych na Zachodzie przebywających na wyspie Bute. Decyzją naczelnego wodza gen. Władysława Sikorskiego zlokalizowano tam Zgrupowanie Oficerów Nieprzydzielonych (Samodzielny Obóz Oficerski) Stacja Zborna Oficerów, do której kierowano zarówno oficerów starszych wiekiem nienadających się do służby liniowej, osoby skonfliktowane z przełożonymi jak również przeciwników politycznych gen. Sikorskiego. Wspomniany obóz funkcjonował od 1940 r. do 1944 r., przebywało w nim w tym okresie ponad 800 oficerów. Tematyka życia religijnego jest wzmiankowana jedynie na marginesie wspomnień pisanych w Rothesay. Szczęśliwie w spuściźnie dominikanina Marcina Chrostowskiego, który w 1940 r. pełnił obowiązki kapelana wspomnianej stacji zachował się tekst wygłoszonej przezeń konferencji religijnej. Warto wspomnieć, że ojciec Marcin przed wstąpieniem do zakonu uczestniczył jako ochotnik w kampanii 1920 r., walcząc z bolszewikami. W czasie II wojny światowej był między innymi kapelanem biskupa polowego Gawliny, z którym odbył podróż i wizytację oddziałów polskich w ZSRR. Następnie ojciec Marcin Chrostowski służył w szeregach 1. Dywizji Pancernej, jego bohaterska post awa została nagrodzona między innymi krzyżem Virtuti Militarii.

Infections caused by multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, especially methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), are responsible for high mortality and morbidity worldwide. Resistant lineages were previously confined to hospitals but are now also causing infections among healthy individuals in the community. It is therefore imperative to explore therapeutic avenues that are less prone to raise drug resistance compared with today’s antibiotics. An opportunity to achieve this ambitious goal could be provided by targeted antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT), which relies on the combination of a bacteria-specific targeting agent and light-induced generation of ROS by an appropriate photosensitizer. Here, we conjugated the near-infrared photosensitizer IRDye700DX to a fully human mAb, specific for the invariantly expressed staphylococcal antigen immunodominant staphylococcal antigen A (IsaA). The resulting immunoconjugate 1D9-700DX was characterized biochemically and in preclinical infection models. As demonstrated in vitro, in vivo, and in a human postmortem orthopedic implant infection model, targeted aPDT with 1D9-700DX is highly effective. Importantly, combined with the nontoxic aPDT-enhancing agent potassium iodide, 1D9-700DX overcomes the antioxidant properties of human plasma and fully eradicates high titers of MRSA. We show that the developed immunoconjugate 1D9-700DX targets MRSA and kills it upon illumination with red light, without causing collateral damage to human cells.

Ovarian adult-type granulosa cell tumors are often associated with endometrial hyperplasia or even uterine cancer. Herein, we present a case report of a 65-year-old female patient who had undergone curettage of the uterine cavity several times due to abnormal and irregular uterine bleeding. Owing to recurrent episodes of vaginal bleeding as well as ineffective pharmacological treatment of simple endometrial hyperplasia without atypia, the patient underwent a laparoscopically-assisted vaginal hysterectomy. Owing to an enlarged right ovary with bluish color, intra-operative pathological examination was immediately performed. Surprisingly, an ovarian adult-type granulosa cell tumor was diagnosed, and the surgery was extended to pelvic lymphadenectomy and omentectomy. Immunohistochemical staining with selected antibodies (Arginase 2, Nidogen 2, BAF250a/ARID1A, GPR30, SF-1/NR5A, and 1LRH-2E1/NR5A2) was also performed. In conclusion, in cases of recurrent vaginal bleeding concomitant with endometrial hyperplasia, the existence of rare ovarian tumors connected with extensive estrogenic stimulation must be taken into account. Immunostaining with selected antibodies (Arginase 2, Nidogen 2, ARID1A, or GPR30) may help elucidate the possible molecular mechanisms associated with the BAF250a/development of various ovarian/endometrial abnormalities.

Recently, I came across the statement that „adaptation is a procedure for the translation of the film” (Post). Adaptation reaches not only the increasing circles of the cinema or art, but also our lives, and the very concept of adaptation undergoes constant expansion. The main goal of this article is to show that film adaptation is an example of a multimodal translation pattern. As a result, we receive a completely new text, which is a film, in contrast to its literary prototype. To show that a film adaptation is an example of a multimodal translation pattern I will discuss it from a linguistic point of view. The article will often refer to modality or multimodal text. I will also present a small part of the research conducted on the film from a linguistic point of view at the Philology University (Wyższa Szkoła Filologiczna) in Wrocław.

Within the past years the proportion of cervical adenocarcinomas has increased, however, there is a shortage of data regarding immunohistochemical and molecular features and their prognostic relevance in early-stage cervical adenocarcinoma (esCAC). Aim of the present study was to evaluate molecular prognostic factors in esCAC patients treated with primary surgery. Analyses of surgical specimens in 59 patients with esCAC were performed on fixed paraffin-embedded sections of tumour tissue. Tumour tissue sections were routinely stained with hematoxylin and eosin followed by microscopic examination. Immunohistochemical analyses (IHC) were performed on paraffin-embedded section. Flow cytometry (FCM) analysis of paraffin-embedded tumor tissue was performed using flow cytometer FACSCalibur equipped with argon laser. DNA histogram analysis was performed with ModFit application. Treatment effectiveness was evaluated using overall 5-year survival. Survival probability was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Overall survival rate estimated using Kaplan-Meier method was 74.6%. Among the IHC and FCM features univariate analysis showed statistical significance of nm23-H1 gene expression and total S-phase fraction ≤ 11.9% (S-TOT). In multi- variate analysis LVSI and parametrial involvement had significant, negative impact on survival (HR = 8.04, p < 0.003 and HR = 4.03, p < 0.017, respectively). However, none of the tested IHC and FCM features had any influence on overall 5-year survival.

The new generation of programmable networks allow mechanisms to be deployed for the efficient control of dynamic bandwidth allocation and ensure Quality of Service (QoS) in terms of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for delay or loss sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) services. To achieve flexible, dynamic and automated network resource management in Software-Defined Networking (SDN), Artificial Intelligence (AI) algorithms can provide an effective solution. In the paper, we propose the solution for network resources allocation, where the AI algorithm is responsible for controlling intent-based routing in SDN. The paper focuses on the problem of optimal switching of intents between two designated paths using the Deep-Q-Learning approach based on an artificial neural network. The proposed algorithm is the main novelty of this paper. The Developed Networked Application Emulation System (NAPES) allows the AI solution to be tested with different patterns to evaluate the performance of the proposed solution. The AI algorithm was trained to maximize the total throughput in the network and effective network utilization. The results presented confirm the validity of applied AI approach to the problem of improving network performance in next-generation networks and the usefulness of the NAPES traffic generator for efficient economical and technical deployment in IoT networking systems evaluation.

Many HIV-1-seropositive women in Africa who are offered antiretroviral prophylaxis to prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV do not begin interventions. Research on barriers to participation has not addressed the possible effects of women's sociocultural and economic circumstances. We examined these factors at an MTCT prevention programme in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire. We interviewed two groups of women after they had received HIV-positive test results and had been invited by the programme staff to return for monthly follow-up visits before beginning short-course zidovudine prophylaxis. Participants (n = 30) completed follow-up visits and prophylaxis. Non-participants (n = 27) refused or discontinued follow-up visits and did not begin zidovudine. Fewer non-participants had been born in Cote d'Ivoire (67% vs. 97%) or were Ivorian nationals (48% vs. 77%); they had lived in the country for less time (21 vs. 26 median years). They were less likely to be French-literate (37% vs. 77%), and more of them reported having had Koranic education only (18% vs. 0). They more often reported miscarriages, stillbirths, or infant deaths (69% vs. 33%), and had partners with low-ranked jobs (63% vs. 30%). Our findings suggest that the non-participants were more marginal socioculturally and economically in Ivorian society than participants. Greater attention to mitigating the effects of broader structural factors on women's participation in interventions may increase the effectiveness of MTCT prevention in Africa. Violent and aggressive behaviour is a serious problem among hospitalised psychiatric patients. The aim of this study was to assess factors that may help predict violent behaviour in psychiatric inpatients. Method: The study group consisted of 107 patients hospitalised in the Department of Adult Psychiatry, Poznan University of Medical Sciences in Poznań, with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (n = 58), schizophrenia (n = 39) and anxiety disorders (n = 10). Sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained through a review of medical records and patient interviews using a self-prepared questionnaire. Results: Of 107 respondents, aggressive behaviour occurred in 46 patients (42.99%). A low risk of aggressive behaviour was observed in 68 patients (63.6%), medium risk – in 37 patients (34.6%), and high risk – in 2 subjects (1.9%). The study demonstrated a significant association between aggressive behaviour and short duration of the illness (p = 0.002), the criminal history of the patient (p = 0.003), the use of sedatives (p = 0.04), unemployment (p = 0.00034) and male gender in patients with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (p = 0.03). There were no statistically significant differences between the incidence of violence and the main diagnosis (p = 0.56). The study showed no association with alcohol (p = 0.5) and psychoactive substance abuse (p = 0.07), age (p = 0.8), addiction in family (p = 0.1), history of suicide attempt (p = 0.08) and the lack of insight into the illness (p = 0.8). Conclusions: Based on these results, it appears that the most important factors in the occurrence of aggressive behaviour were criminal history, prior violent behaviour and short duration of the illness. The use of sedative drugs and male gender were also significant risk factors.

Quantitative characterization of the spatial structure of single photons is essential for free-space quantum communication and quantum imaging. We introduce an interferometric technique that enables the complete characterization of a two-dimensional probability amplitude of a single photon. Importantly, in contrast to methods that use a reference photon for the phase measurement, our technique relies on a single photon interfering with itself. Our setup comprises of a heralded single-photon source with an unknown spatial phase and a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer with a spatial filter in one of its arms. The spatial filter removes the unknown spatial phase and the filtered beam interferes with the unaltered beam passing through the other arm of the interferometer. We experimentally confirm the feasibility of our technique by reconstructing the spatial phase of heralded single photons using the lowest order interference fringes. This technique can be applied to the characterization of arbitrary pure spatial states of single photons.

Background: Early identification of patients at risk for cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CS-AKI) based on novel biomarkers and tissue oxygen saturation might enable intervention to reduce kidney injury. Aims: The study aimed to ascertain whether brain and muscle oxygenation measured by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), in addition to cystatin C and NGAL concentrations, could help with CS-AKI prediction. Methods: This is a single-centre prospective observational study on adult patients undergoing cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Brain and muscle NIRS were recorded during surgery. Cystatin C was measured on the first postoperative day, while NGAL directly before and 3 h after surgery. Results: CS-AKI was diagnosed in 18 (16%) of 114 patients. NIRS values recorded 20 min after CPB (with cut-off value ≤ 54.5% for muscle and ≤ 62.5% for the brain) were revealed to be the most accurate predictors of CS-AKI. Preoperative NGAL ≥ 91.5 ng/mL, postoperative NGAL ≥ 140.5 ng/mL, and postoperative cystatin C ≥ 1.23 mg/L were identified as independent and significant CS-AKI predictors. Conclusions: Brain and muscle oxygen saturation 20 min after CPB could be considered early parameters possibly related to CS-AKI risk, especially in patients with increased cystatin C and NGAL levels.

During the last decades, a continuous rise of multi-drug resistant pathogens has threatened antibiotic efficacy. To tackle this key challenge, novel antimicrobial therapies are needed with increased specificity for the site of infection. Photopharmacology could enable such specificity by allowing for the control of antibiotic activity with light, as exemplified by trans/cis-tetra-ortho-chloroazobenzene-trimethoprim (TCAT) conjugates. Resistance development against the on (irradiated, TCATa) and off (thermally adapted, TCATd) states of TCAT were compared to that of trimethoprim (TMP) in Escherichia coli mutant strain CS1562. Genomics and transcriptomics were used to explore the acquired resistance. Although TCAT shows TMP-like dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) inhibition in vitro, transcriptome analyses show different responses in acquired resistance. Resistance against TCATa (on) relies on the production of exopolysaccharides and overexpression of TolC. While resistance against TCATd (off) follows a slightly different gene expression profile, both indicate hampering the entrance of the molecule into the cell. Conversely, resistance against TMP is based on alterations in cell metabolism towards a more persister-like phenotype, as well as alteration of expression levels of enzymes involved in the folate biosynthesis. This study provides a deeper understanding of the development of new therapeutic strategies and the consequences on resistance development against photopharmacological drugs.

While molecular photoswitches have proven useful in many fields, selective and reversible control over multiple switches is an unsolved challenge. Here, the authors report on a system consisting of two classes of photoswitches that can be addressed orthogonally and demonstrate the applicability in phase-transfer control.

Background: There is a high incidence of opportunistic infection among HIV-1-infected patients with tuberculosis in Africa and, consequently, high mortality. We assessed the safety and efficacy of trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole 800 mg/160 mg (co-trimoxazole) prophylaxis in prevention of such infections and in decrease of morbidity and mortality.Methods: Between October, 1995, and April, 1998, we enrolled 771 HIV-1 seropositive and HIV-1 and HIV-2 dually seroreactive patients who had sputum-smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis (median age 32 years [range 18-64], median CD4-cell count 317 cells/microL) attending Abidjan's four largest outpatient tuberculosis treatment centres. Patients were randomly assigned one daily tablet of co-trimoxazole (n=386) or placebo (n=385) 1 month after the start of a standard 6-month tuberculosis regimen. We assessed adherence to study drug and tolerance monthly for 5 months and every 3 months thereafter, as well as rates of admission to hospital.Findings: Rates of laboratory and clinical adverse events were similar in the two groups. 51 patients in the co-trimoxazole group (13.8/100 person-years) and 86 in the placebo group (25.4/100 person-years) died (decrease In risk 46% [95% CI 23-62], p<0.001). 29 patients on co-trimoxazole (8.2/100 person-years) and 47 on placebo (15.0/100 person-years) were admitted to hospital at least once after randomisation (decrease 43% [10-64]), p=0.02). There were significantly fewer admissions for septicaemia and enteritis in the co-trimoxazole group than in the placebo group.Interpretation: In HIV-1-infected patients with tuberculosis, daily co-trimoxazole prophylaxis was well tolerated and significantly decreased mortality and hospital admission rates. Thanks to its innocuousness and high spatiotemporal resolution, light is used in several established and emerging applications in biomedicine. Among them is the modulation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents’ relaxivity with the aim to increase the sensitivity, selectivity and amount of functional information obtained from this outstanding whole-body medical imaging technique. This approach requires the development of molecular contrast agents that show high relaxivity and strongly pronounced photo-responsiveness. To this end, we report here the design and synthesis of a light-activated MRI contrast agent, together with its evaluation using UV–vis spectroscopy, Fast Field Cycling (FFC) relaxometry and relaxometric measurements on clinical MRI scanners. The high relaxivity of the reported agent changes substantially upon irradiation with light, showing a 17% decrease in relaxivity at 0.23T upon irradiation with λ = 400 nm (violet) light for 60 min. On clinical MRI scanners (1.5T and 3.0T), irradiation leads to a decrease in relaxivity of 9% and 19% after 3 and 60 min, respectively. The molecular design presents an important blueprint for the development of light-activatable MRI contrast agents.

The purpose of the study is to present selected aspects of the work of bachelors (vice-regents) of Krakow’s studium generale in modern period, especially in XVII century. One of the aspects shown in the text was the importance of studying outside the province in Italy, France and Spain for the intellectual formation of the bachelors of the studium generale. Next attention has been given particularly to the fraternal movement as bachelors were involved in promoting this form of piety especially membership in rosary confraternities.

Odpusty miasta kościołów [Rzym] a odpusty jubileuszowe w Polsce średniowiecznej(streszczenie) Celem artykułu jest ukazanie metod symbolicznego pielgrzymowania do Rzymu (bez opuszczania granic kraju) ludności średniowiecznej Polski. Było to możliwe dzięki pozyskiwaniu tzw. odpustów jubileuszowych, nadaniom odpustów stacji rzymskich, a także poprzez odwiedzenie dwóch nekropolii (Gniezno i Łask), na których rozsypano ziemie zebraną z cmentarzy rzymskich. Omawiając nadania indulgencji stacji rzymskich wskazano beneficjentów tych nadań oraz zasygnalizowano kwestię przywilejów odpustowych udzielanych zakonom mendykanckim.

Paper concerns the software system supporting the analysis of different cases of solving VRP by various algorithms. VRP has been characterised and application structure has been presented. Illustrative experimental results show the usefulness of the system.

Main objective of the essay under consideration was investigation and characterized most important source materials stocked at the Archive of the Cracow’s Dominican Province to present the history of their studium generale during the Modern period. Also, the current knowledge of a.m. period of studium generale was screened- out and some searching hypothesis were proposed concerning the history of the Cracow’s Dominican studium generale. The searching time frame have been limited to XVI up to XVII century. Taken into consideration, the current status of research works performed so far, one ought to stated that the Modern Epoch has not been searched out with the same consciousness compare to the Medieval one. As the most important printed source materials, one ought to account the documents issued by the general and provincial chapters of the Convent. The documents of the provincial chapters have been listed and screened by Father Fabian Madura, and were stocked as the typescript formats at the Cracow’s Dominican Convent Library. Based on the searched source materials of General Chapter of Dominican Convent at Cracow, it is possible to present the general overview of the convent education system and its changes in due time. Due to the records found it would be possible to identify – position and name – the Dominicans nominated to the Convent stadium generale. The most important manuscript stocked at the Cracow’s Dominican Convent Archive as the education system is concern, is so called Liber Studii Generalis cracoviensis (rkps 20). This manuscript covers the list of friars who have been nominated to work at stadium generale. A.m. document has to verify and compare with other sources. Taken into consideration above mention facts, it seems to be as most important searching activities to describe the convent society of the Cracow’s Dominicans. At the essay some detailed searching hypothesis were presented, such as searching and reviewing the personnel of studium generale, the convent, intellectual culture both teachers and scholar, legal aspects related to the convent’s education system, links and cooperation between the Cracow’s University and studium generale and the Dominicans activities both sacrum and profanum.

The farming sector was strongly affected by substantial price increases of some products. It was especially painful for poorer consumers in developing and Third World countries, while its benefits were channelled mainly to big farmers and speculators in developed economies. The implementa-tion of the concept of sustainable development is a possible solution of this problem as its approach is more holistic and humanistic. However, the implementation of adequate reforms is very slow. It is a sign that leading US and EU policymakers attempt to stay within the limits of current model of growth.However, the second wave of price hikes may prove to be more lasting, which would further deepen income inequality.

W ustawach uniwersyteckich z lat 1441 – 1508 brakuje informacji o archiwum. Brak źródeł na jego temat jest także wynikiem nawiedzających uniwersytet przez stulecia pożarów, które niweczyły dorobek piśmienniczy uniwersytetu. Początkowo archiwum znajdowało się w dyspozycji rektora. Najcenniejsze dokumenty, w tym dyplomy pergaminowe, przechowywane były w skarbcu uniwersyteckim znajdującym się w budynku Collegium Maius. Celem niniejszego szkicu jest ukazanie najstarszych dziejów archiwum Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, począwszy od założenia uniwersytetu w Krakowie aż po okres zaborów. Zasygnalizowano w nim również problematykę wybranych źródeł do dziejów uczelni, wraz z krótką charakterystyką przechowywanych w archiwum zbiorów z przełomu średniowiecza i okresu nowożytnego. W artykule przedstawione zostały także dzieje opracowywania katalogu dokumentów pergaminowych podjęte w latach 30. XIX wieku oraz kontynuowane podczas II wojny światowej przez Kazimierza Kaczmarczyka, byłygo dyrektora Archiwum Państwowego w Poznaniu, który został zatrudniony w Krakowie 1 sierpnia 1940 r. Zdołał on sporządzić katalog dokumentów pergaminowych, opracowując 731 pozycji. Ta praca, uzupełniona następnie o materiały z tzw. zbioru E. Rastawieckiego, stała się podstawą katalogu wydanego w 1953 r. Victor Shklovsky’s Third Factory is the third part of the so-called “autobiographical trilogy”, which was first published in 1926, i.e. after Shklovsky’s return from abroad, following his unwilling emigration. As a literary work, it is not easily classified. In part, it is a memoir of the three “factories” that influenced Shklovki’s development both as a writer and a witness of his time. In addition to fictional and biographical elements, Third Factory also includes anecdotes about writers, literary critics and theorists (e.g. Roman Jakobson, Yuri Tynianov, Boris Eikhenbaum, and Y. Polivanov) as well as letters and memoirs, which are published here in a Polish translation for the first time.

Background: The association between HIV infection and invasive cervical cancer that has been reported may reflect differential prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection or uncontrolled confounding. We conducted a case-control study in a West African population to assess the relationship between HIV infection and invasive cervical cancer, taking into account HPV infection and other potential risk factors for cervical cancer.Methods: Women with invasive cervical cancer (cases) or normal cervical cytology (controls) were recruited in a hospital-based case-control study in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were estimated in logistic regression analyses controlling for important cofactors.Results: HIV infection was noted in 22/132 (16.7%) cases and 10/120 (8.3%) controls (p = 0.048). High-risk HPV infection was detected in cervical tumor samples from 89.4% of case-participants and in cervical cytology samples in 31.1% of control-participants. In logistic regression analysis, HIV infection was associated with cervical cancer in women with HPV (OR 3.4; 95% CI 1.1-10.8). Among women aged 2 (OR 7.0; 95% CI 1.9-25.7) and HIV infection (OR 4.5; 95% CI 1.5-13.6). Among women aged > 40 years, high-risk HPV infection (OR 23.5; 95% CI 9.1-60.6) and parity > 2 (OR 5.5; 95% CI 2.3-13.4), but association with HIV infection was not statistically significant.Conclusions: These data support the hypothesis that HIV infection is a cofactor for cervical cancer in women with HPV infection, and, as in all populations, the need for promoting cervical screening in populations with high prevalence of HIV infection.
