Abstract

This study developed a grid-connected biogas power generation system for a rural community using a 3-phase 2.2 kW squirrel-cage induction machine as the self-excited induction generator. The generator was driven by a 196 cc single-cylinder spark-ignition engine fueled by biogas. We developed a back-to-back converter that consists of a 3-phase PWM rectifier as the generator-side converter and a single-phase LCL-filtered grid-connected inverter. The generator-side converter transferred the active power to the grid-side converter and supplied the reactive power control back to the generator. The notch filter-based bus voltage control on the generator side mitigated the inter-harmonics in the generator current. The injected grid current complied with the IEEE 1547 standard because of the multi-frequency unbalanced synchronous reference frame control. The proposed system was validated with biogas produced from pig manure at a pig farm in central Thailand, which found a maximum output of 1.2 kW with a thermal system efficiency of 10.7%. The proposed system was scheduled to operate at 1.2 kW for 8 h per day with a levelized cost of 0.07 US$/kWh, 42% cheaper than the retail electricity price, and a payback period of 2.76 years. The proposed system is suitable for a farm with a minimum of 34 pigs.

Abstract

The current work presents about the development of thermal energy storage (TES) using paraffin wax as a phase change material (PCM). In order to investigate the performance of TES as a supplemental heat source for solar dryer when no sunshine, the TES was connected with solar dryer having maximum capacity for 10 kg of fresh chilies. The TES unit consists of 28.35 kg PCM and copper tube inside the cylindrical tank. The charging process of the TES is carried out with the help of electrical heater. The paraffin wax in the TES starts to melt and absorb the energy till it turns to liquid state. For heat discharging process during the off sunshine hours, air with mass flow rate of 0.0023 kg/s at ambient temperature can be passed through the copper tube in the TES in order to provide hot air for the dryer. From the performance analysis results, it is observed that the temperature of drying chamber can be maintained about 40-50 °C for 3 hours at least after sunset and higher than ambient temperature about 16.72 °C. The novel design of TES successfully increases the performance of the drying systems and reduces the time for drying process.

Abstract

In recent years, solar water heating technology has got the major importance in water heating applications. For the efficient and effective working of solar water heaters, storage of the hot water is the main issue in this water heating technologies. This paper mainly presents the exergy and efficiency comparison between the solar flat plate water heater and evacuated tube water heater. A five level stratified thermal storage tank is designed and developed for this analysis. At each level of the tank, temperature of the water is collected for each one hour interval from 9:00 to 16:00 hours in both cases and the overall exergy and efficiency of the two water heaters were calculated. The average efficiency of all the levels for flat plate and evacuated tube collectors are 7.91% and 8.20% respectively. The overall system efficiency is obtained as 39.54% for flat plate and 41.00% for evacuated tube solar collector. At each level exergy is calculate for both systems and the average exergy of all the levels for flat plate collector is 4.243 kW and for evacuated tube solar collector is 4.371 kW.
