Phase measurement constitutes a key task in many fields of science, both in the classical and quantum regime. The higher precision of such measurement offers significant advances, and can also be utilised to achieve finer estimates for quantities such as distance, the gravitational constant, electromagnetic field amplitude, etc. Here we theoretically model the use of a quantum network, composed of a randomly coupled set of two-level systems, as a processing device for phase measurement. An incoming resource state carrying the phase information interacts with the quantum network, whose emission is trained to produce a desired output signal. We demonstrate phase precision scaling following the standard quantum limit, the Heisenberg limit, and beyond. This can be achieved using quantum resource states such as NOON states or other entangled states, however, we also find that classically correlated mixtures of states are alone sufficient, provided that they exhibit quantum coherence. Our proposed setup does not require conditional measurements, and is compatible with many different types of coupling between the quantum network and the phase encoding state, hence making it attractive to a wide range of possible physical implementations. We study a damped kicked top dynamics of a large number of qubits ($N \rightarrow \infty$) and focus on an evolution of a reduced single-qubit subsystem. Each subsystem is subjected to the amplitude damping channel controlled by the damping constant $r\in [0,1]$, which plays the role of the single control parameter. In the parameter range for which the classical dynamics is chaotic, while varying $r$ we find the universal period-doubling behavior characteristic to one-dimensional maps: period-two dynamics starts at $r_1 \approx 0.3181$, while the next bifurcation occurs at $ r_2 \approx 0.5387$. In parallel with period-four oscillations observed for $r \leq r_3 \approx 0.5672$, we identify a secondary bifurcation diagram around $r\approx 0.544$, responsible for a small-scale chaotic dynamics inside the attractor. The doubling of the principal bifurcation tree continues until $r \leq r_{\infty} \sim 0.578$, which marks the onset of the full scale chaos interrupted by the windows of the oscillatory dynamics corresponding to the Sharkovsky order., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We propose a method to witness entanglement between two continuous-variable systems in a Gaussian state. Its key ingredient is a local lossy state transfer from the original spatially separated systems onto two spatially separated qubits. The qubits are initially in a pure product state, therefore by detecting entanglement between the qubits we witness entanglement between the two original systems. This method greatly simplifies entanglement witnessing in complex systems., 5 pages, 2 figures

We propose an information-theoretic quantifier for the advantage gained from cooperation that captures the degree of dependency between subsystems of a global system. The quantifier is distinct from measures of multipartite correlations despite sharing many properties with them. It is directly computable for classical as well as quantum systems and reduces to comparing the respective conditional mutual information between any two subsystems. Exemplarily we show the benefits of using the new quantifier for symmetric quantum secret sharing. We also prove an inequality characterizing the lack of monotonicity of conditional mutual information under local operations and provide intuitive understanding for it. In this work we investigate the problem of simultaneous estimation of phases using generalised three- and four-mode Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In our setup, we assume that the phases are placed in each of the modes in the interferometer, which introduces correlations between estimators of the phases. These correlations prevent simultaneous estimation of all these phases, however we show that we can still obtain the Heisenberg-like scaling of precision of joint estimation of any subset of $d-1$ phases, $d$ being the number of modes, within completely fixed experimental setup, namely with the same initial state and set of measurements. Noise affects production and transmission of entanglement. We use a handy approach for a noise resistance of entanglement of two-qudit systems. A geometric concept using correlation tensors of separable and entangled states is implemented to formulate entanglement criterion. We apply the criterion to the various types of noise (white, colored, local depolarizing and amplitude damping) admixtures with the initial (pure) state. We also study the noise resistance with respect to the violation of specific family of Bell inequalities (CGLMP). A broad set of numerical and analytical results is presented.

It has been demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that genuine multipartite entanglement between qubits can exist even in the absence of multipartite correlations. Here we provide first examples of this effect in higher dimensional systems -- qudits. We construct states in which genuine $N$-partite entanglement between qudits is supported only by correlations involving strictly less than $N$ particles. The construction differs in several aspects from the ones for qubits. The states introduced here are a natural test-bed for candidate quantifiers of genuinely multipartite quantum correlations., 6 pages, 1 figure

We investigate the maximum purity that can be achieved by k-uniform mixed states of N parties. Such N-party states have the property that all their k-party reduced states are maximally mixed. A scheme to construct explicitly k-uniform states using a set of specific N-qubit Pauli matrices is proposed. We provide several different examples of such states and demonstrate that in some cases the state corresponds to a particular orthogonal array. The question of how Bell nonlocality behaves in bipartite systems of higher dimensions is addressed. By employing the probability of violation of local realism under random measurements as the figure of merit, we investigate the nonlocality of entangled qudits with dimensions ranging from $d=2$ to $d=7$. We proceed in two complementary directions. First, we study the specific Bell scenario defined by the Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu (CGLMP) inequality. Second, we consider the nonlocality of the same states under a more general perspective, by directly addressing the space of joint probabilities (computing the frequencies of behaviours outside the local polytope). In both approaches we find that the nonlocality decreases as the dimension $d$ grows, but in quite distinct ways. While the drop in the probability of violation is exponential in the CGLMP scenario, it presents, at most, a linear decay in the space of behaviours. Furthermore, in both cases the states that produce maximal numeric violations in the CGLMP inequality present low probabilities of violation in comparison with maximally entangled states, so, no anomaly is observed. Detecting quantumness of correlations (especially entanglement) is a very hard task even in the simplest case i.e. two-partite quantum systems. Here we provide an analysis whether there exists a relation between two most popular types of entanglement identifiers: the first one based on positive maps and not directly applicable in laboratory and the second one --- geometric entanglement identifier which is based on specific Hermiticity-preserving maps. We show a profound relation between those two types of entanglement criteria. Hereunder we have proposed a general framework of nonlinear functional entanglement identifiers which allows us to construct new experimentally friendly entanglement criteria., 11 pages, 3 figures

Quantum coherence can be used to infer the presence of a detector without triggering it. Here we point out that, according to quantum mechanics, such interaction-free measurements cannot be perfect, i.e., in a single-shot experiment one has strictly positive probability to activate the detector. We formalize the extent to which such measurements are forbidden by deriving a trade-off relation between the probability of activation and the probability of an inconclusive interaction-free measurement. Our description of interaction-free measurements is theory independent and allows derivations of similar relations in models generalizing quantum mechanics. We provide the trade-off for the density cube formalism, which extends the quantum model by permitting coherence between more than two paths. The trade-off obtained hints at the possibility of perfect interaction-free measurements and indeed we construct their explicit examples. Such measurements open up a paradoxical possibility where we can learn by means of interference about the presence of an object in a given location without ever detecting a probing particle in that location. We therefore propose that absence of perfect interaction-free measurement is a natural postulate expected to hold in all physical theories. The squares of the three components of the spin-s operators sum up to $s(s+1)$. However, a similar relation is rarely satisfied by the set of possible spin projections onto mutually orthogonal directions. This has fundamental consequences if one tries to construct a hidden variable (HV) theory describing measurements of spin projections. We propose a test of local HV-models in which spin magnitudes are conserved. These additional constraints imply that the corresponding inequalities are violated within quantum theory by larger classes of correlations than in the case of standard Bell inequalities. We conclude that in any HV-theory pertaining to measurements on a spin one can find situations in which either HV-assignments do not represent a physical reality of a spin vector, but rather provide a deterministic algorithm for prediction of the measurement outcomes, or HV-assignments represent a physical reality, but the spin cannot be considered as a vector of fixed length., Comment: 5 pages, journal version

The problem of closing the detection loophole in Bell tests is investigated in the presence of a limited number of efficient detectors using emblematic multipartite quantum states. To this end, a family of multipartite Bell inequalities is introduced basing on local projective measurements conducted by $N-k$ parties and applying a $k$-party Bell inequality on the remaining parties. Surprisingly, we find that most of the studied pure multipartite states involving e.g. cluster states, the Dicke states, and the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states can violate our inequalities with only the use of two efficient detectors, whereas the remaining detectors may have arbitrary small efficiencies. We believe that our inequalities are useful in Bell experiments and device-independent applications if only a small number of highly efficient detectors are in our disposal., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, journal version

A genuinely $N$-partite entangled state may display vanishing $N$-partite correlations measured for arbitrary local observables. In such states the genuine entanglement is noticeable solely in correlations between subsets of particles. A straightforward way to obtain such states for odd $N$ is to design an `anti-state' in which all correlations between an odd number of observers are exactly opposite. Evenly mixing a state with its anti-state then produces a mixed state with no $N$-partite correlations, with many of them genuinely multiparty entangled. Intriguingly, all known examples of `entanglement without correlations' involve an \emph{odd} number of particles. Here we further develop the idea of anti-states, thereby shedding light on the different properties of even and odd particle systems. We conjecture that there is no anti-state to any pure even-$N$-party entangled state making the simple construction scheme unfeasable. However, as we prove by construction, higher-rank examples of `entanglement without correlations' for arbitrary even $N$ indeed exist. These classes of states exhibit genuine entanglement and even violate an $N$-partite Bell inequality, clearly demonstrating the non-classical features of these states as well as showing their applicability for quantum communication complexity tasks., Comment: 8 pages

We investigate the impact of a local random unitary noise on multipartite quantum states of an arbitrary dimension. We follow the dynamical approach, in which the single-particle unitaries are generated by local random Hamiltonians. Assuming short evolution time we derive a lower bound on the fidelity between an initial and the final state transformed by this type of noise. This result is based on averaging the Tamm-Mandelstam bound and holds for a wide class of distributions of random Hamiltonians fulfilling specific symmetry conditions. We present a surprisingly simple three-dimensional Bloch sphere representation of a qutrit, i.e., a single three-level quantum system. We start with a symmetric state of a two-qubit system and relate it to the spin-1 representation. Using this representation we associate each qutrit state with a three-dimensional vector $\mathbf{a}$ and a metric tensor $\mathbf{\hat\Gamma}$ which satisfy $\mathbf{a}\cdot \mathbf{\hat\Gamma} \cdot \mathbf{a}\leq 1$. This resembles the well known condition for qubit Bloch vectors in which case $\mathbf{\hat\Gamma}=\hat{I}$. In our case the vector $\mathbf{a}$ corresponds to spin-1 polarisation, whereas the tensor $\mathbf{\hat\Gamma}$ is a function of polarisation uncertainties. Alternatively, $\mathbf{a}$ is a local Bloch vector of a symmetric two-qubit state and $\mathbf{\hat\Gamma}$ is a function of the corresponding correlation tensor. Spontaneous parametric downconversion in combination with linear optics was successfully used to observe a variety of multiphoton entangled states. Yet, experiments performed so far lacked flexibility, as each of the various setups was useful for only a particular multiphoton entangled state. In this paper, we describe how, by using multiphoton interference, one can observe entire families of multiphoton entangled states in the very same linear optical setup. Our method thus goes beyond the commonly used two-photon interference and turns out to be a very useful tool for state observation. We will discuss the interference of four and six photons at different types of beam splitters and show which families of entangled states are observable. The benefits of this approach are demonstrated in a four-photon interference experiment by observing a variety of highly entangled multiphoton states.

We show that, for a continuous set of entangled four-partite states, the task of maximizing the payoff in the symmetric-strategy four-player quantum Minority game is equivalent to maximizing the violation of a four-particle Bell inequality with each observer choosing the same set of two dichotomic observables. We conclude the existence of direct correspondences between (i) the payoff rule and Bell inequalities, and (ii) the strategy and the choice of measured observables in evaluating these Bell inequalities. We also show that such a correspondence between Bell polynomials (in a single plane) and four-player, symmetric, binary-choice quantum games is unique to the four-player quantum Minority game and its "anti-Minority" version. We test ideas put forward e.g in arXiv:1508.02368, which suggest that using rates in quantum optics can lead to better indicators of non-classicality for states of quantum optical fields with undefined photon numbers. By rate we mean the ratio of registered photons in a given detector to the total number of detected photons in all detectors in the experiment. For the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect for parametric down conversion fields, we show that by using two detector correlation functions which are defined in terms of averages of products of measured rates, rather than usual intensities, one can observe non -- classical visibilities beyond $1/2$ for significantly higher pump rates. At such rates we already have a partially stimulated emission which leads to significant amplitudes for multiple pairs production, still the new approach allows to clearly see the non-classical dip., 5 pages, 1 figure

We introduce a new method of investigating qutrit nonclassicality by translating qutrit operators to symmetric two-qubit operators. We show that this procedure partially resolves the discrepancy between maximal qutrit entanglement and maximal nonclassicality of qutrit correlations. Namely we express Bell operators corresponding to qutrit Bell inequalities in terms of symmetric two-qubit operators, and analyze the maximal quantum violation of a given Bell inequality from the qubit perspective. As an example we show that the two-qutrit CGLMP(Collins-Gisin-Linden-Massar-Popescu) Bell inequality can be seen as a combination of Mermin's and CHSH (Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt) qubit Bell inequalities, and therefore the optimal state violating this combination differs from the one which corresponds to the maximally entangled state of two qutrits. In addition, we discuss the same problem for a three qutrit inequality. We recently showed that multipartite correlations between outcomes of random observables detect quantum entanglement in all pure and some mixed states. In this followup article we further develop this approach, derive a maximal amount of such correlations, and show that they are not monotonous under local operations and classical communication. Nevertheless, we demonstrate their usefulness in entanglement detection with a single random observable per party. Finally we study convex-roof extension of the correlations and provide a closed-form necessary and sufficient condition for entanglement in rank-2 mixed states and a witness in general., Comment: 10 pages, 2 figures

We describe a criterion for the detection of entanglement between two multi-boson systems. The criterion is based on calculating correlations of Gell-Mann matrices with a fixed boson number on each subsystem. This applies naturally to systems such as two entangled spinor Bose-Einstein condensates. We apply our criterion to several experimentally motivated examples, such as an $ S^z S^z $ entangled BECs, ac Stark shift induced two-mode squeezed BECs, and photons under parametric down conversion. We find that entanglement can be detected for all parameter regions for the most general criterion. Multiphoton entanglement is the basis of many quantum communication schemes, quantum cryptographic protocols, and fundamental tests of quantum theory. For entangled three-qubit states it has been shown that there are two inequivalent classes of states, under stochastic local operations and classical communications. The classes are represented by the GHZ- and W-state. The GHZ-state has been used to prove Bell's theorem without inequality. Contrary to the GHZ-state, the W-state shows high robustness of entanglement against photon loss. Here we show the first experimental results on the observation of the polarization entangled three-photon W-state from spontaneous parametric down-conversion.

We show that the "practical" Bell inequalities, which use intensities as the observed variables, commonly used in quantum optics and widely accepted in the community, suffer from an inherent loophole, which severely limits the range of local hidden variable theories of light, which are invalidated by their violation. We present alternative inequalities which do not suffer from any (theoretical) loophole. The new inequalities use redefined correlation functions, which involve averaged products of local rates rather than intensities. Surprisingly, the new inequalities detect entanglement in situations in which the "practical" ones fail. Stokes parameters are a standard tool in quantum optics. They involve averaged intensities at exits of polarizers. If the overall measured intensity fluctuates, as e.g. for states with undefined photon numbers, the instances of its increased value contribute more to the parameters. One can introduce normalized quantum Stokes operators. Operationally, for a given single run of the experiment, their values are differences of measured intensities (or photon numbers) at the two exits of a polarizer divided by their sum. Effects of intensity fluctuations are removed. Switching to normalized Stokes operators results in more sensitive entanglement conditions. We also show a general method of deriving an entanglement indicator for optical fields which use polarization correlations, which starts with any two-qubit entanglement witness. We show that the expectation value of squared correlations measured along random local directions is an identifier of quantum entanglement in pure states, which can be directly experimentally assessed if two copies of the state are available. Entanglement can therefore be detected by parties who do not share a common reference frame and whose local reference frames, such as polarizers or Stern-Gerlach magnets, remain unknown. Furthermore, we also show that in every experimental run, access to only one qubit from the macroscopic reference is sufficient to identify entanglement, violate a Bell inequality, and, in fact, observe all phenomena observable with macroscopic references. Finally, we provide a state-independent entanglement witness solely in terms of random correlations and emphasize how data gathered for a single random measurement setting per party reliably detects entanglement. This is only possible due to utilized randomness and should find practical applications in experimental confirmation of multiphoton entanglement or space experiments. Published version

Non-classical correlations between measurement results make entanglement the essence of quantum physics and the main resource for quantum information applications. Surprisingly, there are $n$-particle states which do not exhibit $n$-partite correlations at all but still are genuinely $n$-partite entangled. We introduce a general construction principle for such states, implement them in a multiphoton experiment and analyze their properties in detail. Remarkably, even without $n$-partite correlations, these states do violate Bell inequalities showing that there is no classical, i.e., local realistic model describing their properties., 13 pages, 10 figures

Imagine three parties, Alice, Bob, and Charlie, who share a state of three qubits such that all two-party reduced states A-B,A-C, and B-C are separable. Suppose that they have information only about these marginals but not about the global state. According to recent results, there exists an example for a set of three separable two-party reduced states that is only compatible with an entangled global state. In this paper, we show a stronger result, by exhibiting separable two-party reduced states A-B, A-C, and B-C, such that any global state compatible with these marginals is nonlocal. Experimental procedures are presented for the rapid detection of entanglement of unknown arbitrary quantum states. The methods are based on the entanglement criterion using accessible correlations and the principle of correlation complementarity. Our first scheme essentially establishes the Schmidt decomposition for pure states, with few measurements only and without the need for shared reference frames. The second scheme employs a decision tree to speed up entanglement detection. We analyze the performance of the methods using numerical simulations and verify them experimentally for various states of two, three and four qubits., 13 pages, 12 figures

We present a class of entanglement identifiers which has the following experimentally friendly feature: once the expectation value of the identifier exceeds some definite limit, we can conclude the state is entangled, even if not all measurements defining the identifier have been performed. These identifiers are in the form of sums of non-negative functions of correlations in a quantum state, mostly squares of correlations, and we illustrate their use and strengths on various examples., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure

We study the activation of entanglement in teleportation protocols. To this end, we a present derivation of the average fidelity of teleportation process with noisy classical channel for qudits. In our work we do not make any assumptions about the entangled states shared by communicating parties. Our result allows us to specify the minimum amount of classical information required to beat the classical limit when the protocol is based on the Bell measurements. We also compare average fidelity of teleportation obtained using noisy and perfect classical channel with restricted capacity. The most important insight into the intricacies of quantum information theory that we gain is that though entanglement, obviously, is a necessary resource for efficient teleportation it requires a certain threshold amount of classical communication to be more useful than classical communication. Another interesting finding is that the amount of classical communication required to activate entanglement for teleportation purposes depends on the dimension d of the system being teleported but is not monotonic reaching maximum for d = 4., 4 pages, 4 figures

Monogamy of bipartite correlations leads, for arbitrary pure multi-qubit states, to simple conditions able to indicate various types of multipartite entanglement by being capable to exclude the possibility of k-separability., journal version

Multi-photon states can be produced in multiple parametric down conversion (PDC) processes. The nonlinear crystal in such a case is pumped with high power. In theory, the more populated these states are, the deeper is the conflict with local realistic description. However, the interference contrast in multi-photon PDC experiments can be quite low for high pumping. We show how the contrast can be improved. The idea employs currently accessible optical devices, the multiport beam splitters. They are capable of splitting the incoming light in one input mode to $M$ output modes. Our scheme works as a POVM filter. It may provide a feasible CHSH-Bell inequality test, and thus can be useful in e.g. schemes reducing communication complexity., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

In a typical, entanglement-based quantum key distribution (QKD) protocols the maximally entangled, singlet states are used. The standard way to generate them is to use parametric down conversion with low intensity laser beams. This way the probability to produce two or more entangled pairs is negligible. However, one obtains it at a cost of a large likelihood of producing no particles at all. In this work, we ask the question if this approach is the optimal one from the point of view of key generation rate. For a case study, we take BBM 92 protocol and find the optimal intensity of the beam. We show optimal intensities are much higher than the ones typically used. Our results can be generalized to other protocols based on singlet states.

We present a new approach to Stokes parameters, which enables one to see better non-classical properties of bright quantum light, and of undefined overall photon numbers. The crucial difference is as follows. The standard quantum optical Stokes parameters are averages of differences of intensities of light registered at the two exits of polarization analyzers, and one gets their normalized version by dividing them by the average total intensity. The new ones are averages of the registered normalized Stokes parameters, for the duration of the experiment. That is, we redefine each Stokes observable as the difference of photon number operators at the two exits of a polarizing beam splitter multiplied by the inverse of their sum. The vacuum eigenvalue of the operator is defined a zero. We show that with such an approach one can obtain more sensitive entanglement indicators based on polarization measurements.

We introduce an experimental procedure for the detection of quantum entanglement of an unknown quantum state with a small number of measurements. The method requires neither a priori knowledge of the state nor a shared reference frame between the observers and can thus be regarded as a perfectly state-independent entanglement witness. The scheme starts with local measurements, possibly supplemented with suitable filtering, which essentially establishes the Schmidt decomposition for pure states. Alternatively we develop a decision tree that reveals entanglement within few steps. These methods are illustrated and verified experimentally for various entangled states of two and three qubits.

Impossibility of finding local realistic models for quantum correlations due to entanglement is an important fact in foundations of quantum physics, gaining now new applications in quantum information theory. We present an in-depth description of a method of testing the existence of such models, which involves two levels of optimization: a higher-level non-linear task and a lower-level linear programming (LP) task. The article compares the performances of the existing implementation of the method, where the LPs are solved with the simplex method, and our new implementation, where the LPs are solved with a matrix-free interior point method. We describe in detail how the latter can be applied to our problem, discuss the basic scenario and possible improvements and how they impact on overall performance. Significant performance advantage of the matrix-free interior point method over the simplex method is confirmed by extensive computational results. The new method is able to solve problems which are orders of magnitude larger. Consequently, the noise resistance of the non-classicality of correlations of several types of quantum states, which has never been computed before, can now be efficiently determined. An extensive set of data in the form of tables and graphics is presented and discussed. We consider multiple entanglement swappings performed on a chain of bipartite states. Each state does not violate CHSH inequality. We show that before some critical number of entanglement swappings is achieved the output state does not violate this inequality either. We report an exhaustive numerical analysis of violations of local realism by two qutrits in all possible pure entangled states. In Bell type experiments we allow any pairs of local unitary U(3) transformations to define the measurement bases. Surprisingly, Schmidt rank-2 states, resembling pairs of maximally entangled qubits, lead to the most noise-robust violations of local realism. We present a method to derive Bell monogamy relations by connecting the complementarity principle with quantum non-locality. The resulting monogamy relations are stronger than those obtained from the no-signaling principle alone. In many cases, they yield tight quantum bounds on violation of single and multiple qubit correlation Bell inequalities. We present a development of a geometric approach to entanglement indicators. The method is applied to detect genuine multiqubit entanglement. The criteria are given in form of non-linear conditions imposed on correlation tensors. Thus they involve directly observable quantities, and in some cases require only few specific measurements to find multiqubit entanglement. The non-linearity of each of the criteria allows detection of entanglement in wide classes of states. States that strongly violate Bell's inequalities are required in many quantum informational protocols as, for example, in cryptography, secret sharing and the reduction of communication complexity. We investigate families of such states with a numerical method which allows to reveal non-classicality even without direct knowledge of Bell's inequalities for the given problem. The Fisher information $F$ gives a limit to the ultimate precision achievable in a phase estimation protocol. It has been shown recently that the Fisher information for a linear two-mode interferometer cannot exceed the number of particles if the input state is separable. As a direct consequence, with such input states the shot-noise limit is the ultimate limit of precision. In this work, we go a step further by deducing bounds on $F$ for several multiparticle entanglement classes. These bounds imply that genuine multiparticle entanglement is needed for reaching the highest sensitivities in quantum interferometry. We further compute similar bounds on the average Fisher information $\bar F$ for collective spin operators, where the average is performed over all possible spin directions. We show that these criteria detect different sets of states and illustrate their strengths by considering several examples, also using experimental data. We consider properties of states of many qubits, which arise after sending certain entangled states via various noisy channels (white noise, coloured noise, local depolarization, dephasing and amplitude damping). Entanglement of these states is studied and their ability to violate certain classes of Bell inequalities. States which violate them allow for higher than classical efficiency of solving related distributed computational tasks with constrained communication. This is a direct property of such states -- not requiring their further modification via stochastic local operations and classical communication such as entanglement purification or distillation procedures. We identify novel families of multi-particle states which are entangled but nevertheless allow local realistic description of specific Bell experiments.
