De provincie Drenthe heeft de opgave een groot areaal nieuwe natuur in te richten en om de hydrologie en ecologie van het beekdal van de Drentsche Aa te herstellen. De opgaven voor ecologie en hydrologie zijn vernatting en verschraling van het gebied, en vereisen een herinrichting van de Drentsche Aa. In de Drentsche Aa zijn ook belangrijke kaders voor landschappelijke waarden en recreatie. Daarom worden voor verschillende deelgebieden integrale inrichtingsplannen opgesteld, waarbij de samenhang tussen ecologie, hydrologie, cultuurhistorie en recreatie centraal staat. Dit inrichtingsplan focust op deelgebied ‘Roodzanden’, een beekdalflank van de Drentsche Aa. In het vervolg van dit hoofdstuk worden de kaders voor het inrichtingsplan toegelicht, en daarna de daaruit volgende opgaven. Vervolgens wordt het doorlopen proces toegelicht en het project afgebakend.

Typically, training sessions are administered daily for several days or weeks. While this intensive training is effective, it may also be that monaural localization abilities improve instantly after providing explicit top-down information about the direction dependent change in timbre and level. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether cognitive feedback (i.e., top-down information) could instantly improve sound localization in naive acutely monauralized listeners. Forty-three normal-hearing listeners (experimental group), divided over five different centers, were tested. Two control groups, consisting of, respectively, nine and eleven normal-hearing listeners, were tested in one center. Broadband sounds (0.5-20 kHz) were presented from visible loudspeakers, positioned in azimuth (- 90° to 90°). Participants in the experimental group received explicit information about the noticeable difference in timbre and the poor localization in the monauralized listening condition, resulting in an instant improvement in sound localization abilities. With subsequent roving of stimulus level (20 dB), sound localization performance deteriorated immediately. The reported improvement is related to the context of the localization test. The results provide important implications for studies investigating sound localization in a clinical setting, especially during closed-set testing, and indicate the importance of top-down information.

De KRW is een Europese richtlijn uit 2000 die, na implementatie door de Europese lidstaten, er voor moet zorgen dat in uiterlijk 2027 al het oppervlakte- en grondwater in Europa in een goede chemische en ecologische toestand is. De huidige stand van zaken van het Nederlandse KRW-doelbereik laat zien dat het niet goed gesteld is met de Nederlandse waterkwaliteit en -kwantiteit van onze oppervlakte- en grondwateren. Momenteel voldoet geen enkel oppervlaktewater aan de KRW-doelen en is voor grondwater zowel de kwaliteit als de kwantiteit onvoldoende. Sterker nog: de waterkwaliteit en -kwantiteit is sinds 2009 zelfs achteruit gegaan, terwijl dat volgens het stand still-beginsel van de KRW juist verboden is. Daarnaast zijn ook de geplande maatregelen in het derde en laatste SGBP onvoldoende om de KRW-doelen voor de deadline van 2027 overal in Nederland te halen, en zijn aanvullende maatregelpakketten bij lange na niet toereikend genoeg om het KRW-doelbereik in zicht te brengen. In dit rapport leest u wat daarvan de risico’s zijn voor de vergunningverlening voor de bouw- en infrasector.

Het Noordzeekanaalgebied vormt een natuurlijke verbinding voor trekvissen als aal, driedoornige stekelbaars en spiering. In een sterk veranderd landschap blijkt samen optrekken binnen het stroomgebied cruciaal voor het herstel van migratieroutes, een effectieve monitoring van vispassages en onderzoek naar resterende knelpunten.

Nederland kent 161 Natura 2000-gebieden, met een totale omvang van circa een miljoen hectare waarvan twee derde open water. Dit Natura 2000-netwerk bestaat uit gebieden die zijn aangewezen onder de Vogelrichtlijn en onder de Habitatrichtlijn (VHR). Beide Europese richtlijnen zijn belangrijke instrumenten om de Europese biodiversiteit te waarborgen. Alle Vogel- of Habitatrichtlijngebieden zijn geselecteerd op grond van het voorkomen van soorten en habitattypen die vanuit Europees oogpunt gebiedsbescherming nodig hebben. Hoofddoelstelling van het Natura 2000-netwerk is het herstel en behoud van biodiversiteit in Europa.

Het Noordzeekanaal is niet alleen een belangrijke scheepvaartverbinding tussen Amsterdam en de Noordzee, maar vormt ook een belangrijke ecologische verbindingszone voor vissen. Bekend is dat 5 tot 10 procent van de schieraal die uit Nederland wegtrekt door dit kanaal naar buiten trekt. Minder bekend is de omvang van de intrek van glasaal door het Noordzeekanaal.

The Traffic Control department of ProRail manages the train traffic on the railway network, especially in cases of calamities. Train Traffic Controllers (referred to as TRDLs) are the people at this department that are responsible for safely guiding everything in an assigned area. A TRDL achieves this mainly by controlling signs, switches and railway settings. These TRDLs are supported by an Automatic Railway Setting (referred to as ARI). The main shortcoming of the ARI is that many real world traffic management problems are not supported by the functionality. The goal of this research project is to specify, design and implement a multi-agent system within ProRails distributed simulated environment to support TRDLs in their work that is not handled by the ARI. The specification and design of this multi-agent system were modeled using the Prometheus methodology. The implementation of the MAS is created with the OO2APL Java library. I was able to create a working proof of concept of a multi-agent system within a distributed simulation environment that notifies when a Train Handling Documents (referred to as, TAD(s)) should be applied to ProRail. The system not only does it at the decision point, but it gives the TRDLs a heads up to possibly prepare a TAD.

While traditional authority and violent conflict have both been characteristic for the African continent and studied frequently in academia, the relation between these two phenomena has remained profoundly under-researched. In recent years the Central Malian regions of Mopti and Ségou have become the theatre of intensifying violent conflict dynamics in which traditional authorities and their communities have increasingly become confronted with severe destabilization, insecurity and violence perpetrated by radical armed groups and communal militias. It is argued in this thesis that these traditional authorities have become caught in a difficult position between the state, radical armed groups, which both have posed physical threats and undermined their governance capacity, and inter-communal violence which they have been attempting to pacify. The main purpose of this thesis is to identify, analyze and theorize the ways in which traditional authorities in Central Mali have affected and been affected by these conflict dynamics since the start of Mali’s crisis in 2012. In the search for these connections this thesis adopts Charles Tilly’s relational mechanisms-processes framework. It is argued that traditional authorities are linked to the two main identified conflict processes, namely radical armed mobilization and inter-communal polarization, through the relational mechanisms of co-optation attempts, intra-communal brokerage, and inter-communal brokerage. The thesis explains how these concepts relate to the main identified ways in which traditional authorities in the region have suffered from, responded to and more generally been connected to violent conflict dynamics in Central Mali.

In dit onderzoek is gekeken naar de invloed van onderlinge sociale relaties bij kleuters op het werkgeheugen. Er deden 150 kinderen mee aan het onderzoek. Er is gekeken naar zowel positieve als negatieve aspecten van onderlinge sociale relaties bij kleuters, namelijk pro-sociaal gedrag en problemen onderling. Het werkgeheugen is gemeten door de subschaal van de Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF). Pro-sociaal gedrag en problemen met leeftijdsgenoten is gemeten door subschalen van de Strengths and Difficulties Questionaire (SDQ). Beide vragenlijsten zijn door de leerkracht ingevuld. Vervolgens is de data geanalyseerd door een multiple regressie analyse. Uit de resultaten kwam een positieve significante relatie tussen pro-sociaal gedrag en het werkgeheugen met een gemiddelde effectgrootte naar voren. Dit resultaat impliceert dat pro-sociaal gedrag bij kinderen in de kleuterklas het werkgeheugen versterkt. Er is echter, tegen de verwachting naar aanleiding van resultaten van eerder onderzoek in, geen significante relatie gevonden tussen problemen onderling en het werkgeheugen. Methodologische beperkingen worden genoemd in het onderzoek. Het onderzoek onderstreept het belang om pro-sociaal gedrag mee te nemen in interventieporgramma’s voor het werkgeheugen bij kleuters.

Integrative analysis of copy number and gene expression data can help in understanding the cis and trans effect of copy number aberrations on transcription levels of genes involved in a pathway. To analyse how these copy number mediated gene-gene interactions differ between groups of samples we propose a new method, named dNET. Our method uses ridge regression to model the network topology involving one gene's expression level, its gene dosage and the expression levels of other genes in the network. The interaction parameters are estimated by fitting the model per gene for all samples together. However, instead of testing for differential network topology per gene, dNET tests for an overall difference in estimated parameters between two groups of samples and produces a single p-value. With the help of several simulation studies, we show that dNET can detect differential network nodes with high accuracy and low rate of false positives even in the presence of differential cis effects. We also apply dNET to publicly available TCGA cancer datasets and identify pathways where copy number mediated gene-gene interactions differ between samples with cancer stage lower than stage 3 and samples with cancer stage 3 or above.

Item does not contain fulltext, BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The TRENDY trial is an international multi-center phase-II study, randomizing hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients between transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) with a target dose of 48-54Gy in six fractions. The radiotherapy quality assurance (QA) program, including prospective plan feedback based on automated treatment planning, is described and results are reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Scans of a single patient were used as a benchmark case. Contours submitted by nine participating centers were compared with reference contours. The subsequent planning round was based on a single set of contours. A total of 20 plans from participating centers, including 12 from the benchmark case, 5 from a clinical pilot and 3 from the first study patients, were compared to automatically generated VMAT plans. RESULTS: For the submitted liver contours, Dice Similarity Coefficients (DSC) with the reference delineation ranged from 0.925 to 0.954. For the GTV, the DSC varied between 0.721 and 0.876. For the 12 plans on the benchmark case, healthy liver normal-tissue complication probabilities (NTCPs) ranged from 0.2% to 22.2% with little correlation between NCTP and PTV-D95% (R(2)<0.3). Four protocol deviations were detected in the set of 20 treatment plans. Comparison with co-planar autoVMAT QA plans revealed these were due to too high target dose and suboptimal planning. Overall, autoVMAT resulted in an average liver NTCP reduction of 2.2 percent point (range: 16.2 percent point to -1.8 percent point, p=0.03), and lower doses to the healthy liver (p<0.01) and gastrointestinal organs at risk (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Delineation variation resulted in feedback to participating centers. Automated treatment planning can play an important role in clinical trials for prospective plan QA as suboptimal plans were detected.

Item does not contain fulltext, OBJECTIVE: Rhenium-188-HEDP is an effective radiopharmaceutical for the treatment of painful bone metastases from prostate cancer. The effectiveness of the beta-radiation emitted by 188Re might be enhanced by combination with chemotherapy, using the radiosensitization concept. Therefore, the authors investigated the combined treatment of the taxanes, docetaxel and cabazitaxel, with 188Re in prostate carcinoma cell lines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cytotoxic effects of single and combined treatment with taxanes and 188Re were investigated in three human prostate carcinoma cell lines (PC-3, DU 145, and LNCaP), using the colony-forming assay. The half maximal effective concentration (EC50) of all individual agents was determined. The combined treatment was studied at 0.25, 0.5, 1, 2, and 4 times the EC50 of each agent. The interaction was investigated with a regression model. RESULTS: The survival curves showed dose-dependent cell growth inhibition for both the taxanes and 188Re. The regression model showed a good capability of explaining the data. It proved additivity in all combination experiments and confirmed a general trend to a slight subadditive effect. CONCLUSIONS: This proof-of-mechanism study exploring radiosensitization by combining 188Re and taxanes showed no synergism, but significant additivity. This encourages the design of in vivo studies. Future research should explore the potential added value of concomitant treatment of bone metastases with chemotherapy and 188Re-HEDP.

Centraal in de nieuwe CROW 400 staat risicogestuurd werken. Dit principe komt onder andere terug in de nieuwe systematiek voor het bepalen van de veiligheidsklasse en de grotere rol die de veiligheidskundige heeft bij het vaststellen van de maatregelen. Ook de manier van onderzoek doen heeft een meer risicogestuurd karakter gekregen.
