Abstract

As tools for designing and manufacturing hardware become more accessible, smaller producers can develop and distribute novel hardware. However, there aren't established tools to support end-user hardware troubleshooting or routine maintenance. As a result, technical support for hardware remains ad-hoc and challenging to scale. Inspired by software troubleshooting workflows like StackOverflow, we propose a workflow for asynchronous hardware troubleshooting: SplatOverflow. SplatOverflow creates a novel boundary object, the SplatOverflow scene, that users reference to communicate about hardware. The scene comprises a 3D Gaussian Splat of the user's hardware registered onto the hardware's CAD model. The splat captures the current state of the hardware, and the registered CAD model acts as a referential anchor for troubleshooting instructions. With SplatOverflow, maintainers can directly address issues and author instructions in the user's workspace. The instructions define workflows that can easily be shared between users and recontextualized in new environments. In this paper, we describe the design of SplatOverflow, detail the workflows it enables, and illustrate its utility to different kinds of users. 4. Language Learning of Migrants: Empirical Evidence from the German Integration Course System with a Focus on Literacy Courses

Abstract

In this chapter, we focus on the German integration course for migrants, the number of which increased rapidly beginning in 2015. The courses are mandated by the German Immigration Act and represent a relatively well-financed and professional course programme within the national adult education system. The main challenges between 2015 and 2018 were the provision of a sufficient number of adequate integration courses, the successful transfer of knowledge in the teaching-learning process, and the qualification of teachers. Additionally, pass rates of integration courses, including the final examinations, declined compared with previous years. We assess how well the German integration course system met the demand in those years, and also, how successfully the adult literacy course as part of the German integration course system met its goals and facilitated success for its students. As a first step, we present data over time compiled from the official statistics for nationwide integration courses by the "Federal Office for Migration and Refugees" (BAMF) to show developments and shifts within the course system. We then analyse the test results of participants in "literacy courses" from 2015 to 2018. Finally, we subject the German integration course system to a critical discussion. Abstract

The deep sea plays a critical role in global climate regulation through uptake and storage of heat and carbon dioxide. However, this regulating service causes warming, acidification and deoxygenation of deep waters, leading to decreased food availability at the seafloor. These changes and their projections are likely to affect productivity, biodiversity and distributions of deep-sea fauna, thereby compromising key ecosystem services. Understanding how climate change can lead to shifts in deep-sea species distributions is critically important in developing management measures. We used environmental niche modelling along with the best available species occurrence data and environmental parameters to model habitat suitability for key cold-water coral and commercially important deep-sea fish species under present-day (1951-2000) environmental conditions and to project changes under severe, high emissions future (2081-2100) climate projections (RCP8.5 scenario) for the North Atlantic Ocean. Our models projected a decrease of 28%-100% in suitable habitat for cold-water corals and a shift in suitable habitat for deep-sea fishes of 2.0°-9.9° towards higher latitudes. The largest reductions in suitable habitat were projected for the scleractinian coral Lophelia pertusa and the octocoral Paragorgia arborea, with declines of at least 79% and 99% respectively. We projected the expansion of suitable habitat by 2100 only for the fishes Helicolenus dactylopterus and Sebastes mentella (20%-30%), mostly through northern latitudinal range expansion. Our results projected limited climate refugia locations in the North Atlantic by 2100 for scleractinian corals (30%-42% of present-day suitable habitat), even smaller refugia locations for the octocorals Acanella arbuscula and Acanthogorgia armata (6%-14%), and almost no refugia for P. arborea. Our results emphasize the need to understand how anticipated climate change will affect the distribution of deep-sea species including commercially important fishes and foundation species, and highlight the importance of identifying and preserving climate refugia for a range of area-based planning and management tools.

13. Are molecular cytogenetics and bioinformatics suggesting diverging models of ancestral mammalian genomes?

Abstract

"Excavating" ancestral genomes The recent release of the chicken genome sequence (Hillier et al. 2004Go) provided exciting news for the comparative genomics community as it allows insights into the early evolution of the human genome. A bird species can now be used as an outgroup to model early mammalian genome organization and reshuffling. The genome sequence data have already been incorporated in a computational analysis of chicken, mouse, rat, and human genome sequences for the reconstruction of the ancestral genome organization of both a mammalian ancestor as well as a murid rodent ancestor (Hillier et al. 2004Go; Bourque et al. 2005Go). This bioinformatic effort joins a molecular cytogenetic model (Richard et al. 2003Go; Yang et al. 2003Go; Robinson et al. 2004Go; Svartman et al. 2004Go; Wienberg 2004Go; Froenicke 2005Go) as the second global approach to explore the architecture of the ancestral eutherian karyotype—a fundamental question in comparative genomics. Since both models use the human genome as reference, they are readily comparable. Surprisingly, however, they share few similarities. Only two small autosomes and the sex chromosomes of the hypothesized ancestral karyotypes are common to both. Unfortunately, given its significance, neither the extent of these differences nor their impact on comparative genomics have been discussed by Bourque and colleagues (2005Go). In an attempt to redress this, we compare the two methods of ancestral genome reconstruction, verify the resulting models, and discuss reasons for their apparent divergence.
