Abstract

Summary: The weekend constitutes an important recovery period for employees. However, psychologically reattaching to work on Monday can be difficult because employees must transition from their private to their work role. Building on boundary theory and integrating a sleep and circadian perspective, we shed light on this transition by investigating antecedents and outcomes of Monday reattachment. We propose that three weekend sleep characteristics differentially relate to reattachment on Monday: weekend sleep quality, catch‐up sleep (extended sleep duration on the weekend), and social sleep lag (differences in sleep times workweek vs. weekend). Successful reattachment on Monday should, in turn, be related to lower levels of exhaustion and higher task performance during the workweek. We conducted a weekly diary study with 310 employees (933 weeks) over four workweeks. Two‐level path models demonstrated that higher weekend sleep quality was indirectly related to lower levels of workweek exhaustion via higher levels of Monday reattachment. In contrast, higher catch‐up sleep was related to higher levels of workweek exhaustion via lower levels of Monday reattachment. Accordingly, we demonstrate that Monday reattachment can set the tone for the entire workweek, but the capability to reattach can depend on weekend sleep as a core recovery process. 8. Information search in everyday decisions: The generalizability of the attraction search effect

Abstract

The recently proposed integrated coherence-based decisions and search model (iCodes) makes predictions for search behavior in multi-attribute decision tasks beyond those of classic decision-making heuristics. More precisely, it predicts the Attraction Search Effect that describes a tendency to search for information for the option that is already attractive given the available evidence. To date, the Attraction Search Effect has been successfully tested using a hypothetical stock-market game that was highly stylized and specifically designed to be highly diagnostic. In three experiments, we tested whether the Attraction Search Effect generalizes to different semantic contexts, different cue-value patterns, and a different presentation format than the classic matrix format. Across all experiments, we find evidence for information-search behavior that matches iCodes's information-search prediction. Therefore, our results corroborate not only the generalizability of the Attraction Search Effect in various contexts but also the inherent process assumptions of iCodes.

10. Chronobiology & Sleep at Work.

Abstract

In the current symposium we will address the important topics of chronobiology and sleep in work settings. Chronobiology deals with how humans and many other living organisms synchronize their daily biorhythms with the 24h-light-dark cycle of our planet. Individual differences in synchronization (entrainment) settings have important implications for when people are capable of performing at their very best during the workday. Moreover, we will address sleep -- an activity that is controlled by chronobiological processes and that has important implications for performance and employee well-being. By doing so, our symposium aims to stimulate an integrative account of insights from chronobiology and sleep research. We believe that the connection between sleep, chronotype, and work is a compelling area of interdisciplinary research that is of great interest to researchers and practitioners who care about organizational performance and employee well-being.
