Introduction Obesity and excessive weight gain during pregnancy have lasting implications for both women and infant health. Adverse childhood experiences and stressful life events have been associated with pre-pregnancy obesity and excessive gestational weight gain. However, the effect of each has been examined independently and scant work has investigated the effects of both in the same analysis. The current study examined the unique and conjoint effects of adverse childhood experiences and recent stressful life events on women's pre-pregnancy BMI and gestational weight gain. Methods A racially and socioeconomically diverse sample of 176 pregnant women completed questionnaires and anthropometric measurements during the third trimester and two months postpartum. Results Maternal adverse childhood experiences were uniquely associated with pre-pregnancy BMI ([beta] = 0.21, p = .02), but not gestational weight gain. Recent stressful life events did not uniquely predict pre-pregnancy BMI or gestational weight gain, nor did it explain the association between adverse childhood experiences and pre-pregnancy BMI. Adverse childhood experiences and recent stressful life events did not interact to predict either of the women's weight outcomes. Discussion Adverse childhood experiences have lasting unique effects on women's pre-pregnancy BMI. Obesity is related to several perinatal health issues for the mother and child, thus understanding the effects of childhood adversity on women's weight outcomes is critical. Parasympathetic nervous system functioning as indexed by respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is widely used as a measure of physiological regulation. We examined developmental patterns of children's resting RSA and RSA reactivity from 2 to 15 years of age, a period of time that is marked by considerable advances in children's regulatory abilities. Physiological data were collected from a community sample of 270 children (116 males) during a resting period and during a frustration laboratory task when the children were 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 15 years old. We examined both stability and continuity in resting RSA and RSA reactivity across time. We found stability in resting RSA but not RSA reactivity from toddlerhood to adolescence. Separate multilevel models were used to examine changes in resting RSA and RSA reactivity from Age 2 to Age 15. The rate of change in resting RSA slowed from Age 2 to Age 15 with a plateau around Age 10. A splined growth model indicated that the rate of RSA reactivity increased from Age 2 to Age 7 and a modest slowing and leveling off from Age 7 to Age 15. Understanding the developmental characteristics of RSA across childhood and adolescence is important to understanding the larger constructs of self- and emotion regulation.

Several cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (e.g., hypertension, poor glycemic control) can affect and be affected by autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity. Since excess adiposity can influence CVD development through its effect on hypertension and diabetes mellitus, it is important to determine how adiposity and altered ANS activity are related. The present study employed structural equation modeling to investigate the relation between adiposity and ANS activity both directly and indirectly through biological variables typically associated with glycemic impairment and cardiac stress in older adults. Utilizing the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) dataset, 1,145 non-smoking adults (74±4.8 yrs, 62.8% female) free from known CVD, hypertension, and diabetes and not currently taking beta-blockers were evaluated for fasting blood glucose (FBG), insulin, and HbA1c concentrations, waist circumference (WC), blood pressure (BP), and markers of ANS activity. WC was recorded just above the iliac crest and was used to reflect central adiposity. Resting 2-minute electrocardiograph recordings, pulse wave velocity, and ankle-brachial index data were used to assess the root mean square of successive differences in RR intervals (RMSSD) and the pre-ejection period (PEP), markers of parasympathetic and sympathetic activity, respectively. FBG, insulin, and HbA1c inferred a latent variable termed glycemic impairment (GI), whereas heart rate and diastolic BP inferred a latent variable termed cardiac stress (CS). The structural equation model fit was acceptable [root mean square error of approximation = 0.050 (90% CI =.036,.066), comparative fit index =.970, Tucker Lewis Index = 0.929], with adiposity having both significant direct (β = 0.208, p = 0.018) and indirect (β = -.217, p =.041) effects on PEP through GI. Adiposity displayed no significant direct effect on RMSSD. CS displayed a significant pathway (β = -0.524, p = 0.035) on RMSSD, but the indirect effect of WC on RMSSD through CS did not reach statistical significance (β = -0.094, p = 0.137). These results suggest that adiposity's relation to ANS activity is multifaceted, as increased central adiposity had opposing direct and indirect effects on markers of sympathetic activity in this population of older adults. The cortisol awakening response (CAR) is a distinct component of the circadian cortisol profile and has promise as a biomarker for the monitoring of athlete readiness and training status. Although some studies have suggested the CAR may be affected by the development of overtraining syndrome (OTS), this has yet to be systematically investigated. Purpose: To compare the CAR and diurnal cortisol slope between athletes diagnosed with OTS, healthy athletes, and sedentary controls. Methods: This study was a secondary analysis of data from the Endocrine and Metabolic Responses on Overtraining study. Male participants were recruited to either OTS, healthy athlete, or sedentary control groups. The participants produced saliva samples immediately after waking (S1), 30 minutes after waking (S2), at 16:00 hours, and at 23:00 hours. Salivary cortisol concentration was determined by an electrochemiluminescence assay. Mixed-effects models were used to assess the conditional effect of group (sedentary controls, OTS, and healthy athletes) on the change in cortisol over time. Separate models were fit for the awakening samples (S1 and S2) and for the diurnal slope (linear change across S1, 16:00 h, and 23:00 h). Results: The models demonstrated significant time-by-group interaction for OTS for the 2 cortisol concentrations collected during the awakening period (β = −9.33, P <.001), but not for the diurnal cortisol slope (β = 0.02, P =.80). Conclusions: These results suggest the CAR may be associated with OTS and should be considered within a panel of biomarkers.
