The comprehensive World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) survey of physical and biogeochemical observations, conducted between 1990 and 1998, was unprecedented in spatial coverage, accuracy, and types of measurements. WOCE data represent the “state of the oceans” during the 1990s, providing a baseline for changes that have been observed subsequently through repeats of selected WOCE sections via the Global Ocean Ship-Based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP; http://www.go-ship.org).

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes (BTEX) are common volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in urban airsheds. Elevated levels of VOCs have been reported in many airsheds at many locations, particularly those associated with industrial activity, wood heater use and heavy traffic. Exposure to some VOCs has been associated with health risks. There have been limited investigations into community exposures to BTEX using personal monitoring to elucidate the concentrations to which members of the community may be exposed and the main contributors to that exposure. In this cross sectional study we investigated BTEX exposure of 204 non-smoking, non-occupationally exposed people from four Australian cities. Each participant wore a passive BTEX sampler over 24 h on five consecutive days in both winter and summer and completed an exposure source questionnaire for each season and a diary for each day of monitoring. The geometric mean (GM) and range of daily BTEX concentrations recorded for the study population were benzene 0.80 (0.04-23.8 ppb); toluene 2.83 (0.03-2120 ppb); ethylbenzene 0.49 (0.03-119 ppb); and xylenes 2.36 (0.04-697 ppb). A generalised linear model was used to investigate significant risk factors for increased BTEX exposure. Activities and locations found to increase personal exposure included vehicle repair and machinery use, refuelling of motor vehicles, being in an enclosed car park and time spent undertaking arts and crafts. A highly significant difference was found between the mean exposures in each of the four cities, which may be explained by differences in fuel composition, differences in the mix and density of industry, density of motor vehicles and air pollution meteorology.

Rapid descent of dense Drygalski Trough (western Ross Sea, Antarctica) shelf water over the continental slope, within 100 to 250 m thick benthic plumes, is described. Speeds of up to 1.0 m/s are recorded flowing at an average angle of 35° to the isobaths, entraining ambient Lower Circumpolar Deep Water en route. This process is predominant in determining the concentration and placement of the shelf water injected into the deep sea as a precursor Antarctic Bottom Water. Nonetheless, a 4-hour duration pulse of undiluted shelf water was observed at depth (1407 m) directly north of the Drygalski Trough, moving at around 90 degrees to isobaths, and at a speed of 1.4 m/s. Thus the export of Ross Sea shelf water to the deep sea is accomplished within plumes descending at moderate angle to isobaths, punctuated by rapid downhill cascades.

[1] It is known from small sets of tide gauges that subsurface pressure (sea level corrected for the inverse barometer effect) around Antarctica varies coherently around about half of the continent, and that this coherent signal is related to atmospheric forcing in the form of the Antarctic Oscillation, or Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode. We here confirm that this coherence extends to a more extensive network of tide gauges, and to parts of the continental shelf far from the shore, as measured by bottom pressure gauges. We use time series from an eddy-permitting ocean model with realistic forcing to relate the coherent mode to fluctuations in transport through Drake Passage, and confirm, using a 1degrees resolution barotropic model, that the fluctuations are predominantly due to barotropic dynamics, although baroclinic dynamics are expected to play an increasing role at interannual timescales.
