This thesis describes the development of stochastic analysis frameworks for use in engineering design and optimisation. The research focuses on fibre-reinforced composites, with the stochastic analyses of an existing analytical failure model for unidirectional composites and of a unit cell numerical model of a 2D 5-Harness satin weave. Stochastic failure envelopes are generated through parallelised Monte Carlo Simulation of deterministic, analytical, physically based failure criteria for unidirectional carbon fibre/epoxy matrix composite plies. Monte Carlo integration of global variance-based Sobol sensitivity indices is performed and utilised to decompose observed variance within stochastic failure envelopes into contributions from physical input parameters. It is observed how the interaction effect can be used to identify domains of bi-modal failure, within which the predicted failure probability is governed by multiple failure modes. A reduced unit cell (rUC) model of a 5-Harness satin weave is constructed and analysed deterministically in uniaxial and biaxial loading conditions. An algorithm is developed and implemented to fully automate the rUC construction such that stochastic variations of the crimp angle can be evaluated. Monte Carlo Simulation is employed to propagate the effect of the crimp angle through the deterministic model and the probabilistic response compared with data obtained experimentally. It is observed how simulated variability compares well in uni-axial compression, but under-predicts observed experimental variability in uni-axial tension. The influence of vertical stacking sequence of plies is also demonstrated through the study of in-phase and out-of-phase periodic boundary conditions. The research highlights various, potential advantages that stochastic methodologies offer over the traditional deterministic approach, making a case for their application in engineering design and providing a springboard for further research come the day when greater computational power is available.

In Canada and the U.S., aquatic exposure to pesticides is modeled using field and waterbody models linked together using the Pesticide in Water Calculator (PWC v. 2.001). The field model is the Pesticide Root Zone Model (PRZM v. 5) (USEPA 2020). The waterbody model is the Variable Volume Waterbody Model (VVWM v. 1.02) (USEPA 2019). Currently, US and Canadian pesticide regulatory agencies do not have the ability to quantitatively model potential pesticide runoff reductions from vegetative filter strips (VFS), an area of non-crop (typically grass) vegetation designed to remove sediment and other pollutants from surface water runoff. In 2018, North Carolina State University’s Center of Excellence for Regulatory Science in Agriculture (CERSA) held a workshop, “Incorporating the benefits of vegetative filter strips into risk assessment and risk management of pesticides.” The workshop was organized by scientists from academia, government, and industry along with conservation experts and producers interested in evaluating VFS for reducing pesticide transport. A second workshop was held in September of 2020 where the mechanistic Vegetative Filter Strips Model (VFSMOD) was recommended in combination with PWC for quantitative mitigation of pesticides with VFS in current high-tier, long-term risk assessments. This document oninput parameter definitions, literature references, and sensitivity analyses of the parameters used in VFSMOD is the result of the discussions following the second workshop for reference in the application of the model.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Bingo is often understood as a low-harm form of gambling. This view has been challenged by a growing body of literature identifying gambling harm to bingo players in a range of countries. In this study, we aimed to identify which conditions enabled, facilitated, intensified or mitigated gambling harm for bingo players in three populations in Victoria in the context of corporate, technological and regulatory changes. METHODS: Our qualitative study investigated experiences of bingo-related gambling harm in three populations in Victoria, Australia where bingo was popular and structural disadvantage common: Indigenous people in the east, Pacific people in the state's north and older people on low or fixed incomes in the capital. Data was generated through interviews with 53 bingo players and 13 stakeholders as well as 12 participant observations of bingo sessions. RESULTS: We found that while bingo is overwhelmingly positive for many players, a minority of bingo players and their families experience notable harm. Harm was generated through traditional paper-based bingo games, new technologies such as tablet-based bingo and by the widespread tactic of placing bingo sessions in close proximity to harmful electronic gambling machines. Overall, the risk of harm to bingo players appears to be escalating due to commercial, technological and regulatory changes. CONCLUSIONS: These changes can be better managed by regulators: reforms are needed to safeguard bingo's distinct character as a lower-risk form of gambling at a time when it, and its players, are under threat. Significantly, we found that harm to bingo players is intensified by factors external to gambling such as racialised poverty and adverse life events. Strategies that recognise these factors and grapple with gambling harm to bingo players are needed.

- Abstract
Bingo is a distinct, enduring but understudied form of gambling. It provides comfort and pleasure to many of its players while also causing harm to some. While traditionally seen as low harm, it is being reshaped by technological and regulatory change. Despite this, there is no recent overview of the literature on bingo. This narrative review seeks to fill this gap by exploring the development of literature on bingo since the 1980s, first providing a chronological overview of writing on bingo and then a brief account of major themes in the literature. The literature reviewed was primarily identified through searches of academic databases using search terms such as betting, bingo, electronic and gambling. We find that bingo research makes a number of important contributions: it allows better understanding of groups of overlooked gamblers, corrects biases in gambling literature, highlights the importance of social and structural factors in understanding gambling and employs methodological approaches that are congruent with the people and practices being studied. Additionally, it provides new perspectives on gambling in terms of skill, affect, harm and control and offers a distinct viewpoint to analyse gambling and other phenomena.

- Abstract
© 2019 Researchers worldwide are increasingly reporting the societal impact of their research as part of national research productivity assessments. However, the challenges they encounter in developing their impact case studies against specified government assessment criteria and how pitfalls can be mitigated are not reported. This paper examines the key steps taken to develop an Aboriginal Family Wellbeing (FWB) empowerment research impact case study in the context of an Australian Research Council (ARC) pilot research impact assessment exercise and the challenges involved in applying the ARC criteria. The requirement that researchers demonstrate how their institutions support them to conduct impactful research has the potential to create supportive environments for researchers to be more responsive to the needs of users outside academia. However, the 15-year reference period for the associated research underpinning the reported impact and the focus on researcher's current institutional affiliation constitute potential constraints to demonstrating the true impact of research. For researchers working with Indigenous people, relationships that build over long periods of time, irrespective of university affiliation, are critical to conducting impactful research. A more open-ended time-frame, with no institutional restrictions for the ‘associated research’ provides the best opportunity to demonstrate the true benefits of research not only for Indigenous people but for Australian society more broadly.

Background Cancer is a major cause of death in children worldwide, and the recorded incidence tends to increase with time. Internationally comparable data on childhood cancer incidence in the past two decades are scarce. This study aimed to provide internationally comparable local data on the incidence of childhood cancer to promote research of causes and implementation of childhood cancer control. Methods This population-based registry study, devised by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in collaboration with the International Association of Cancer Registries, collected data on all malignancies and nonmalignant neoplasms of the CNS diagnosed before age 20 years in populations covered by high-quality cancer registries with complete data for 2001-10. Incidence rates per million person-years for the 0-14 years and 0-19 years age groups were age-adjusted using the world standard population to provide age-standardised incidence rates (WSRs), using the age-specific incidence rates (ASR) for individual age groups (0-4 years, 5-9 years, 10-14 years, and 15-19 years). All rates were reported for 19 geographical areas or ethnicities by sex, age group, and cancer type. The regional WSRs for children aged 0-14 years were compared with comparable data obtained in the 1980s. Findings Of 532 invited cancer registries, 153 registries from 62 countries, departments, and territories met quality standards, and contributed data for the entire decade of 2001-10. 385 509 incident cases in children aged 0-19 years occurring in 2.64 billion person-years were included. The overall WSR was 140.6 per million person-years in children aged 0-14 years (based on 284 649 cases), and the most common cancers were leukaemia (WSR 46.4), followed by CNS tumours (WSR 28.2), and lymphomas (WSR 15.2). In children aged 15-19 years (based on 100 860 cases), the ASR was 185.3 per million person-years, the most common being lymphomas (ASR 41.8) and the group of epithelial tumours and melanoma (ASR 39.5). Incidence varied considerably between and within the described regions, and by cancer type, sex, age, and racial and ethnic group. Since the 1980s, the global WSR of registered cancers in children aged 0-14 years has increased from 124.0 (95% CI 123.3-124.7) to 140.6 (140.1-141.1) per million person-years. Interpretation This unique global source of childhood cancer incidence will be used for aetiological research and to inform public health policy, potentially contributing towards attaining several targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The observed geographical, racial and ethnic, age, sex, and temporal variations require constant monitoring and research., International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Union for International Cancer Control.

Objective Ovarian cancer comprises several histological groups with widely differing levels of survival. We aimed to explore international variation in survival for each group to help interpret international differences in survival from all ovarian cancers combined. We also examined differences in stage-specific survival. Methods The CONCORD programme is the largest population-based study of global trends in cancer survival, including data from 60 countries for 695,932 women (aged 15–99years) diagnosed with ovarian cancer during 1995–2009. We defined six histological groups: type I epithelial, type II epithelial, germ cell, sex cord-stromal, other specific non-epithelial and non-specific morphology, and estimated age-standardised 5-year net survival for each country by histological group. We also analysed data from 67 cancer registries for 233,659 women diagnosed from 2001 to 2009, for whom information on stage at diagnosis was available. We estimated age-standardised 5-year net survival by stage at diagnosis (localised or advanced). Results Survival from type I epithelial ovarian tumours for women diagnosed during 2005–09 ranged from 40 to 70%. Survival from type II epithelial tumours was much lower (20–45%). Survival from germ cell tumours was higher than that of type II epithelial tumours, but also varied widely between countries. Survival for sex-cord stromal tumours was higher than for the five other groups. Survival from localised tumours was much higher than for advanced disease (80% vs. 30%). Conclusions There is wide variation in survival between histological groups, and stage at diagnosis remains an important factor in ovarian cancer survival. International comparisons of ovarian cancer survival should incorporate histology.

- Abstract
Cancer is a major cause of death in children worldwide, and the recorded incidence tends to increase with time. Internationally comparable data on childhood cancer incidence in the past two decades are scarce. This study aimed to provide internationally comparable local data on the incidence of childhood cancer to promote research of causes and implementation of childhood cancer control. This population-based registry study, devised by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in collaboration with the International Association of Cancer Registries, collected data on all malignancies and non-malignant neoplasms of the CNS diagnosed before age 20 years in populations covered by high-quality cancer registries with complete data for 2001-10. Of 532 invited cancer registries, 153 registries from 62 countries, departments, and territories met quality standards, and contributed data for the entire decade of 2001-10. 385 509 incident cases in children aged 0-19 years occurring in 2·64 billion person-years were included. The overall WSR was 140·6 per million person-years in children aged 0-14 years (based on 284 649 cases), and the most common cancers were leukaemia (WSR 46·4), followed by CNS tumours (WSR 28·2), and lymphomas (WSR 15·2). In children aged 15-19 years (based on 100 860 cases), the ASR was 185·3 per million person-years, the most common being lymphomas (ASR 41·8) and the group of epithelial tumours and melanoma (ASR 39·5). Incidence varied

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: Health promotion by and with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (hereafter Indigenous) Australians is critically important given a wide gap in health parity compared to other Australians. The development and implementation of step-by-step guides, instruments, packages, frameworks or resources has provided a feasible and low-resource strategy for strengthening evidence-informed health promotion practice. Yet there has been little assessment of where and how these tools are implemented or their effectiveness. This paper reviews the characteristics, implementation and effects of Indigenous health promotion tools. METHODS: Indigenous health promotion tools were identified through a systematic literature search including a prior scoping study, eight databases, references of other reviews and the authors' knowledge (n = 1494). Documents in the peer reviewed and grey literature were included if they described or evaluated tools designed, recommended or used for strengthening Indigenous Australian health promotion. Eligible publications were entered into an Excel spreadsheet and documented tools classified according to their characteristics, implementation and effects. Quality was appraised using the Dictionary for Effective Public Health Practice Project (EPHPP) and Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) tools for quantitative and qualitative studies respectively. RESULTS: The review found that Indigenous health promotion tools were widely available. Of 74 publications that met inclusion criteria, sixty (81%) documented tools developed specifically for the Indigenous Australian population. All tools had been developed in reference to evidence; but only 22/74 (30%) publications specified intended or actual implementation, and only 11/74 (15%) publications evaluated impacts of the implemented tools. Impacts included health, environmental, community, organisational and health care improvements. The quality of impact evaluations was strong for only five (7%) s

A prospective controlled randomized clinical study of 50 patients undergoing total thoracic oesophagectomy by one surgical team is described, in which one group of patients was given prophylactic digoxin and the other was not. The incidence of cardiac dysrhythmia in each group was compared. Fourteen (56%) of 25 patients digitalized, compared to 16 (64%) of 25 patients not digitalized, suffered cardiac dysrhythmia, with a total incidence of 30 patients (60%). The first onset of dysrhythmia occurred within 48 h in 89% of the patients who suffered this complication. These results indicate a high incidence of cardiac dysrhythmia in patients undergoing this operative procedure, which is not significantly reduced by prophylactic digitalization and which is likely to occur within 2 days of surgery.
