The genus Dichichthys was resurrected for five species previously allocated to the genus Parmaturus in the family Pentanchidae. Supraorbital crests on the chondrocranium distinguish Dichichthys from Parmaturus and other members of the family Pentanchidae. A new family, Dichichthyidae, has been proposed to contain Dichichthys. The sequence of the NADH2 mitochondrial gene confirms the placement of Dichichthys outside of the Pentanchidae family, as well as separate from the Atelomycteridae and Scyliorhinidae families. Dichichthys albimarginatus was described using a holotype collected off the coast of New Caledonia. A second juvenile specimen collected off the coast of Papua New Guinea was tentatively assigned as D. cf. albimarginatus. Dichichthys bigus is known from the holotype collected in the Coral Sea off the coast of Queensland, Australia. A new, parasite-afflicted underwater observation was reported further north of Queensland. The type species Dichichthys melanobranchus, previously only known from juvenile specimens, was redescribed based on adult specimens. Dichichthys nigripalatum is known from the holotype collected off Sumbawa, Indonesia, and a tentatively identified photo record from West Java. Dichichthys satoi n. sp. is described from the West Norfolk Ridge and off the North Island of New Zealand. Background: A Zoom-based website was developed in 2020 that offers continuous access to online Narcotics Anonymous (NA) meetings for the first time. This website provides immediate access for persons with substance use disorder to support abstinence from substance-related addictive disorders.Objectives: This study is designed to characterize attendees employing this online format; to evaluate their experiences for gaining support to maintain abstinence; and to compare the 24/7 experience to face-to-face (FF) meetings they attend.Methods: An anonymous 33-item survey was made available on the 24/7 NA website that links to the 24/7 meetings. Persons accessing the site could choose to fill out the survey.Results: 530 respondents completed the survey (64.9% female/35.1% male). Most had stable prior involvement in NA. They had attended more 24/7 meetings (14.9, SD 19.7) than FF meetings (4.6, SD 7.8) in the previous month. 86% had previously attended FF meetings, 48% had served as sponsors, and 92% reported that the 24/7 meetings were more comfortable for them than the FF meetings (p < .001, Cohen’s d = 0.65) and more supportive of abstinence (p < .001, Cohen’s d = 0.91). Of the respondents, 8% were still using drugs, of whom 52% had previously completed some of the Twelve Steps.Conclusions: The 24/7 format provides a new and easily accessible way for NA members to gain support for abstinence and is positively rated by attendees seeking support for recovery from substance use disorders. Objectives Design and Methods Results Conclusions This study aimed, following both single‐ and multi‐event trauma, to ascertain prevalence and course of the dissociative subtype of post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD‐DS) in youth; how well early PTSD‐DS predicts later PTSD; and whether dissociation accounts for unique variance in post‐traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and functional impairment over and above the effect of other post‐trauma cognitive processing factors and PTSS respectively.This study is a secondary analysis of data from the Acute Stress Programme for Children and Teenagers study (n = 234) and the Coping in Care After Trauma study (n = 110) in which children had experienced single‐ and multi‐event trauma respectively.PTSD‐DS diagnosis was common in children with PTSD regardless of trauma experienced (>39.0%). PTSD‐DS showed a similar trajectory of natural recovery to PTSD, and it was similarly predictive of later PTSD following single‐event trauma. Finally, dissociation was a significant factor in PTSS and functional impairment.These results should be viewed in the context of several limitations including narrow sample of participants which reduces the generalizability of results, concerns around children's ability to conceptualize challenging concepts such as dissociation and the use of self‐report measures to form diagnostic groups. The PTSD‐DS diagnosis may offer clinical utility to the extant PTSD diagnosis in children and adolescents, as dissociation has been shown to be a contributory factor in the maintenance of both PTSS and functional impairment. Trawl surveys within and surrounding two northwestern Australian marine parks revealed banded sand catsharks Atelomycterus fasciatus (family Atelomycteridae) taking refuge within large sponges of the family Irciniidae (Demospongiae: Dictyoceratida) and the genus Agelas (Demospongiae: Agelasida: Agelasidae). Five sponges contained a total of 57 A. fasciatus, comprising both sexes and both immature and mature individuals ranging from 102 to 390 mm total length (TL). In the same surveys, only five A. fasciatus were captured unassociated with sponges, suggesting that sponges are an important microhabitat for A. fasciatus and may provide a daytime refuge from predators. Immune system threat detection hinges on T cells' ability to perceive varying peptide-major histocompatibility complex (pMHC) antigens. As the Erk and NFAT pathways link T cell receptor engagement to gene regulation, their signaling dynamics may convey information about pMHC inputs. To test this idea, we developed a dual reporter mouse strain and a quantitative imaging assay that, together, enable simultaneous monitoring of Erk and NFAT dynamics in live T cells over day-long timescales as they respond to varying pMHC inputs. Both pathways initially activate uniformly across various pMHC inputs but diverge only over longer (9+ h) timescales, enabling independent encoding of pMHC affinity and dose. These late signaling dynamics are decoded via multiple temporal and combinatorial mechanisms to generate pMHC-specific transcriptional responses. Our findings underscore the importance of long timescale signaling dynamics in antigen perception and establish a framework for understanding T cell responses under diverse contexts. Pediatric acquired brain injury (ABI) can lead to lifelong challenges restricting social participation, which is an important goal for rehabilitation due to associations with improved wellbeing. This evaluation considered the utility of the Child Adolescent Scale of Participation (CASP) in ABI rehabilitation services. The 20-item measure is rated on a Likert scale with reference to what the rater would expect of their child at that age, including "not applicable" (N/A). It showed high internal consistency (α = 0.954–0.968). Two-step cluster analysis indicated greater difficulties in children with lower participation, including more impairments of executive function and higher staff involvement. Between-group analysis indicated higher rates of N/A answers for younger children and those of ethnic minorities. Overall, the CASP is reliable and clinically useful on an individual level, helping identify people who may need prioritizing for neurorehabilitation; however, group-level analyses were more challenging due to high frequency of N/A responses. Apristurus ovicorrugatus, a new species of deepwater catshark, is described from northwestern Australia. Unique egg cases belonging to an unknown species of Apristurus prompted a more detailed investigation of Apristurus specimens off northwestern Australia. One specimen previously identified as A. sinensis collected off Dampier Archipelago was found gravid with a single egg case. Removal of this egg case confirmed that this species was responsible for producing the unique egg cases previously recorded. The egg cases of this species have strong T‐shaped longitudinal ridges on the dorsal and ventral surfaces which are unique in the genus Apristurus. The ridges most closely resemble those present in Bythaelurus canescens from South America, but are larger and always T‐shaped. The holotype is closest morphologically to A. sinensis but differs in having a medium brown buccal cavity (vs. jet black), ridged egg cases (vs. smooth egg cases), fewer intestinal spiral valve turns and larger pectoral fins. The holotype is also similar, and closest on a molecular level, to A. nakayai with which it shares a unique synapomorphic character, the white shiny iris (apomorphic within the genus). A late‐term embryo removed from an egg case superficially resembled the holotype except in having two parallel rows of enlarged dermal denticles on the dorsolateral predorsal surface. Recent nomenclatural changes to the genera Apristurus and Pentanchus are discussed and challenged. A new species of hornshark is described from northwestern Australia based on six whole specimens and a single egg case. Heterodontus marshallae n. sp. was previously considered to be conspecific with H. zebra from the Western Pacific. The new species differs from H. zebra in the sequence of its NADH2 gene, several morphological characters, egg case morphology and key coloration features. Despite the coloration being similar between H. marshallae n. sp. and H. zebra, i.e., pale background with 22 dark brown bands and saddles, they differ consistently in two key aspects. Firstly, the snout of H. marshallae n. sp. has a dark semicircular bar, usually bifurcated for most of its length vs. a pointed, triangular shaped dark marking in H. zebra. Secondly, H. zebra has a dark bar originating below the posterior gill slits and extending onto anterior pectoral fin, which is absent in H. marshallae n. sp. The Heterodontus marshallae n. sp. is endemic to northwestern Australia and occurs in deeper waters (125–229 m) than H. zebra (0–143 m). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article argues that peacemaking became a central strand of political debate and practice in England during the 1640s. The traumatic experiences of civil war and the failure of elite politicians to negotiate a swift settlement forced English people to think more than ever before about how peace could be achieved and preserved. Those outside the usual spheres of political decision-making now offered themselves up as mediators between king and parliament and publicized their own schemes for national reconciliation. At the same time, the article shows how those most committed to the Parliamentarian or Royalist cause sought to present themselves as peacemakers. It argues that a crucial issue in these public debates about peace was whether a lasting settlement was more likely to be achieved through negotiation or through a decisive military victory for one side. Abstract Background Objectives Data Sources, Study Appraisal, and Synthesis Methods Results Conclusions Spirituality is a construct encompassing a diversity of strongly held beliefs and pursuits related to life’s meaning and purpose. Empirical studies in key domains of spirituality related to substance use disorder (SUD) can be valuable in guiding research, and potentially clinical care.To conduct a scoping review of research on the psychological, biological, and cultural dimensions of spirituality and their role in relation to SUD. To identify limitations in empirical findings within these domains and identify promising areas for related research.Illustrative studies available in the empirical literature are reviewed in order to characterize these three key domains.Certain areas of importance stand out: On Psychology, attribution of SUD to a spiritual outlook; spiritual awakening; the relation of spirituality to drug craving; and spirituality in the context of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy. On Biology, heritability of traits related to shared spiritual experience; neurophysiologic correlates of spiritually related experiences; and correlates in brain imaging; On Culture, spiritual aspects of SUD in different cultural settings; distinctions between spiritual and religious phenomena; roles that international organizations play; and context of acquiring recovery capital. The need for further research in each area is defined.There is utility in examining the diversity of findings in the roles of psychology, biology, and culture in the SUD field. Further research, particularly applying randomization and clinical controls, would be useful in improving the effective application of the construct of spirituality in clinical care. Background: The Twelve Steps described by Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous denote key aspects of how members can achieve abstinence from alcohol and other drugs. However, there are limited empirical findings on what long-term members rely on to support their ongoing recovery. Method: In order to clarify the members' reliance on those latter resources, we surveyed 2,293 long-term NA members through the internet on items they rely on for their recovery. They scored nine NA-related resources (e.g., their sponsor) and three non-NA institutional ones (e.g., a professional therapist). Results: Three factors accounted for 53.6% of the variance in the respondents' scores of the 12 items. We labeled them, with the percent of variance accorded, as NA-based social (24.9%) support, spiritual (17.8%) support, and outside professional (10.9%) help. While NA-based resources ranked highest, outside resources (a house of worship, a therapist, or medications for psychological distress) were scored by 75.4% of the respondents. Analysis by subgroups of respondents reflected the diversity of resources members draw on. The use of internet-based meetings during the COVID-19 period reflected the resilience of the NA format. Conclusion: Members of Twelve Step programs can be studied to shed light on options that they rely on for support for their ongoing recovery, both within the fellowships and outside them. Long-term members can apparently rely on resources inside the fellowship and simultaneously on professional ones, as well. These findings can be helpful for researchers in considering mechanisms that underlie long-term Twelve Step-related recovery and for clinicians in employing both these fellowships and outside resources as adjuncts to their professional care. Background and Objectives: Methamphetamine use disorder (MUD) is a major public health problem, but there are no evidence‐based, best‐practice, pharmacologic, or behavioral treatments for it. Narcotics Anonymous (NA) may provide an option for referral for such patients. Methods: Two waves of surveys were sent to a sample of NA members to evaluate demographic, drug use, and NA‐related issues. Of 4445 responses received from US residents, 647 listed themselves as abstinent from their worst drug problem, methamphetamine. Twelve possible sources of support were scored by these latter respondents for how important each was for their own recovery. Results: Methamphetamine respondents were longstanding NA members, with their first NA meeting 30.2 years ago, 84.3% having served as sponsors for other members, and with little current craving (0.65 out of 10). Although now abstinent for an average of 13.4 years, at some point over the course of the membership, 47.4% had experienced a relapse, for an average of 16.7 months. In a factor analysis of resources scored, 29.6% of the variance fell under NA social and 29.2% spiritual; and 11.8% under outside professional support. Discussion and Conclusions: NA served as a resource for supporting abstinence for some members with MUD. They scored social resources of NA support higher than both spiritual and outside institutional ones. Scientific Significance: NA can serve as a community‐based resource for MUD. Adult specimens, additional juvenile specimens, egg cases and embryos were used to provide a more detailed anatomical description of the Kerguelen sandpaper skate Bathyraja irrasa, a species of skate endemic to the Kerguelen Plateau and listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The morphological and meristic data reveal a relatively high level of intraspecific variation, mostly related to size. Egg cases are described for the first time and were shown to vary in colour and fouling depending on the length of time spent in the marine environment. Embryos removed from egg cases represent all stages of embryonic development in this species and include the largest embryo recorded for this species, i.e., 230 mm total length (LT), which increases the range of size at hatching of B. irrasa to 178–230 mm LT. A number of morphometric and meristic characters varied ontogenetically in B. irrasa, in particular relative tail length, number of tail thorns in the median row and the size of orbits. This study highlights the importance of describing intraspecific variation in species and the importance of egg cases to taxonomic and biological research on oviparous species. The dissociative subtype of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD-DS) was introduced in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), and is characterised by symptoms of either depersonalisation or derealisation, in addition to a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to estimate the point prevalence of current PTSD-DS, and the extent to which method of assessment, demographic and trauma variables moderate this estimate, across different methods of prevalence estimation. Studies included were identified by searching MEDLINE (EBSCO), PsycInfo, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete and PTSDpubs, yielding 49 studies that met the inclusion criteria (N = 8214 participants). A random-effects meta-analysis estimated the prevalence of PTSD-DS as 38.1% (95% CI 31.5–45.0%) across all samples, 45.5% (95% CI 37.7–53.4%) across all diagnosis-based and clinical cut-off samples, 22.8% (95% CI 14.8–32.0%) across all latent class analysis (LCA) and latent profile analysis (LPA) samples and 48.1% (95% CI 35.0–61.3%) across samples which strictly used the DSM-5 PTSD criteria; all as a proportion of those already with a diagnosis of PTSD. All results were characterised by high levels of heterogeneity, limiting generalisability. Moderator analyses mostly failed to identify sources of heterogeneity. PTSD-DS was more prevalent in children compared to adults, and in diagnosis-based and clinical cut-off samples compared to LCA and LPA samples. Testosterone replacement therapies have been shown to increase blood pressure (BP) in hypogonadal men. We studied the effects of a new formulation of testosterone undecanoate (Kyzatrex™) on ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) and heart rate, in 155 men with hypogonadism (mean age, 50.5 years, 76.8% white, 36.1% on antihypertensive therapy). The ABP, heart rate and clinical assessments were obtained at baseline and following 120 and 180 days of therapy. Mean changes from baseline in 24‐h ambulatory systolic BP of 1.7 mmHg (95% CI, 0.3, 3.1) at day 120 and 1.8 mmHg (95% CI, 0.3, 3.2) at day 180 were observed post‐treatment. For those men on antihypertensive drug therapy, increases in mean 24‐h systolic BP were greater than those not taking antihypertensive drugs (3.4 vs 0.7 mmHg at day 120 and 3.1 vs 1.0 mmHg at day 180, respectively). Changes from baseline in 24‐h diastolic BP and heart rate at day 120 were smaller (<1 mmHg and <1 beat/min, respectively). There were no relationships observed between testosterone concentration or hemoglobin levels with ABP. Multivariable analyses showed that baseline ambulatory BP and antihypertensive therapy were significantly correlated with BP changes. These data demonstrate small increases in ambulatory BP following 120 days on this oral testosterone undecanoate with no further changes at 180 days. Background: The term God, included in 5 of the 12 Steps of Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), self-designated spiritual fellowships, has not been studied empirically relative to members' experiences. A greater understanding of this can be clinically useful and can shed light on the 12 Step process of recovery. Objectives: To determine how NA members understand the 12-step concept "God as we understood Him" and the relationship between their understanding of God and the intensity of their craving and depressive symptoms." Methods: 450 (59% male) NA members completed a survey related to their experiences relative to their relationship with "God." The relationship among these variables and comparisons to the general population was analyzed. Craving and depressive symptoms were assessed by self-report. Results: 98% of the NA participants believe in God explicitly or some other higher power (vs 89% of a probability sample of the US population), 67% believe that God determines what happens to them some or all of the time (vs 48%), 78% (vs 28%) report hearing God talking to them "in their mind"; and 37% report that God talks to them "out loud." Acceptance of 12 Step God-related variables inversely predicted a significant portion of the variance of scores on craving (7.5%) and depression (13.5%). Conclusions: Respondents' understanding of God in NA varied considerably and was predictive of their depressive symptoms and craving intensity. These findings can serve as a basis for research into mechanisms underlying NA/AA recovery experiences and can also aid clinicians in how to employ these programs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Size limits are a common fisheries management strategy that are applied to many fisheries and species. Most size limits use a minimum legal size to protect adult fish as per the 'reproduce at least once' paradigm, where stock collapse becomes impossible if every adult can produce one spawner prior to harvest. These approaches can be useful in fisheries where determining catch is difficult and therefore catch limits can be ineffective and potentially cause stock decline.Shark longline fisheries can be complicated to manage due to a deficiency of species‐level reporting. Catch limits are therefore difficult to determine, creating a need for other management measures. Here, three different size‐based management approaches were tested using the shark longline fishery from Papua New Guinea as a case study. These approaches included minimum size, maximum size and harvest slot approaches.Age‐structured Leslie matrix models revealed a broad range of productivities for 12 commonly caught species, ranging from low population growth rates of 1% per year for pelagic thresher sharks Alopias pelagicus to >33% per year for blue sharks Prionace glauca. Therefore, different harvest strategies were required for each species to be fished sustainably. However, management could be applied by grouping similar and easily distinguishable groups of species together.Synthesis and applications. The most pragmatic harvest strategy for all shark species included in this study was to limit harvest to mature individuals using minimum legal sizes. This provided sufficient resilience for all species to tolerate higher levels of fishing mortality than the Papua New Guinea (PNG) longline fishery could impose. Legal minimum lengths were derived from the largest length‐at‐maturity within each species group. However, while this produced a sustainable harvest strategy, issues with selectivity, post‐release mortality, interactions with other fisheries, economic viability and illegal, underreported and unregulated fishing were challenges to restricting fishing to the correct size classes and overall management efficacy. Therefore, while theoretically viable harvest strategies were outlined, it is apparent that size limits would not ensure that these shark species are fished sustainably. The commercial landscape of seaweed use in New Zealand (NZ) has shifted and evolved since it was last reviewed in 2006. One of the largest changes saw the introduction of Macrocystis pyrifera and green-lipped mussel spat (which is landed attached to beach-cast seaweed) into the Quota Management System—the primary tool for commercial fisheries management in NZ. There have also been policy changes around commercial harvesting and farming of Undaria pinnatifida, an introduced brown alga native to Asia. Traditionally, commercial algal utilization has been limited to agar production and beach-cast collection for aquaculture feeds, though demand for seaweed products has increased with a growing Asian population in NZ. The NZ seaweed industry is at an early developmental stage, but it has the potential to offer high quality seaweed stock and value-added products to the world market. The exploration of seaweed farming, the growing demand for seaweed fertilizers and the development of high-value bioactive products such as fucoidan has attracted interest from marine farmers and entrepreneurs. The key to success for the NZ seaweed industry rests in developing high-value products for an export market, from integrated farming, harvesting and processing that can deliver the most value, consume the least energy and generate minimal waste. Two modes of oviparity are known in cartilaginous fishes, (1) single oviparity where one egg case is retained in an oviduct for a short period and then deposited, quickly followed by another egg case, and (2) multiple oviparity where multiple egg cases are retained in an oviduct for a substantial period and deposited later when the embryo has developed to a large size in each case. Sarawak swellshark Cephaloscyllium sarawakensis of the family Scyliorhinidae from the South China Sea performs a new mode of oviparity, which is named "sustained single oviparity", characterized by a lengthy retention of a single egg case in an oviduct until the embryo attains a sizable length. The resulting fecundity of the Sarawak swellshark within a season is quite low, but this disadvantage is balanced by smaller body, larger neonates and quicker maturation. The Sarawak swellshark is further uniquely characterized by having glassy transparent egg cases, and this is correlated with a vivid polka-dot pattern of the embryos. Five modes of lecithotrophic (yolk-dependent) reproduction, i.e. short single oviparity, sustained single oviparity, multiple oviparity, yolk-sac viviparity of single pregnancy and yolk-sac viviparity of multiple pregnancy were discussed from an evolutionary point of view. Background: Subcortical microvascular disease represented by brain white matter hyperintensity on magnetic resonance imaging is associated with functional decline in older people with hypertension. The effects of 2 levels of 24-hour average systolic blood pressure (BP) on mobility, white matter disease progression, and cognitive function over 3 years were studied.Methods: This trial was a prospective, randomized, blinded end-points study in patients ≥75 years of age with systolic hypertension and magnetic resonance imaging evidence of white matter hyperintensity lesions. Patients were randomized to a 24-hour mean systolic BP of ≤130 mm Hg (intensive treatment) versus ≤145 mm Hg (standard treatment) with antihypertensive therapies. Primary study outcomes were changes in mobility (gait speed) and accrual of white matter hyperintensity volume after 3 years. Changes in cognitive function (executive processing) and adverse events were also evaluated.Results: In 199 randomized patients, the mean age of the cohort was 80.5 years, and 54% were women; the average 24-hour systolic BP was 149 mm Hg. Goal BPs were achieved after a median treatment period of 3 to 4 months; at that time, the mean 24-hour systolic BP was 127.7 mm Hg in the intensive treatment group and 144.0 mm Hg in the standard treatment group for an average difference of 16.3 mm Hg. Changes in gait speed were not different between treatment groups (0.40±2.0 versus 0.42±2.7 s in the intensive treatment and standard treatment groups, respectively; P=0.91), whereas changes from baseline in white matter hyperintensity volumes were smaller (0.29%) in the intensive treatment group compared with the standard treatment group (0.48%; P=0.03). Cognitive outcomes also were not different between the treatment groups. Major adverse cardiovascular events were higher in the standard treatment group compared with the intensive treatment group (17 versus 4 patients; P=0.01). This article explores the political uses of disinformation during the English civil war. It argues that forged and falsified publications formed part of a sophisticated propaganda strategy employed by the parliamentarian war party, aimed at discrediting Charles I during the first months of the conflict. It therefore offers an important corrective to traditional emphases on the anxieties that partisan print engendered. Furthermore, by showing that this strategy drew on both the practices and texts associated with early Stuart scribal opposition to Caroline rule, the article suggests an important link between pre‐war manuscript culture and the print practices of the sixteen‐forties. This article seeks to revise existing interpretations of the political writings composed by the early Stuart MP, Sir John Eliot (1592–1632), while imprisoned in the Tower of London between 1629 and 1632. In particular, it challenges the common understanding of Eliot as an absolutist writer. This characterization is shown to be based on a misreading of his principal treatise, The monarchie of man , and the problematic assumption that De jure – a translation he undertook of the continental absolutist, Arnisaeus – should be taken to epitomize Eliot's own views. The article also refutes the notion that The monarchie of man is an uncontroversial text that ignores contemporary political context. It is argued that the treatise can, in fact, only be read in relation to the constitutional crisis of the late 1620s: Eliot's work is presented as a subversive attack on Charles I's tyrannical pretensions, which supplies a remedy in the form of a Ciceronian insistence on active virtue. In this work we have developed a comprehensive dynamic model of electron beam induced deposition (EBID) of residual hydrocarbon coupling mass transport, electron transport and scattering, and species decomposition to predict the deposition of carbon nanopillars. The simulations predict the local species and electron density distributions, as well as the three-demensional morphology and the growth rate of the deposit. Since the process occurs in a high vacuum environment, surface diffusion is considered as the primary transport mode of surface-adsorbed hydrocarbon precursor. The governing surface transport equation (STE) of the adsorbed species is derived and solved numerically. The transport, scattering, and absorption of primary electron as well as secondary electron generation are treated using the Monte Carlo method. Low energy secondary electrons are the major contributors to hydrocarbon decomposition due to their energy range matching peak dissociation reaction cross section energies for precursor molecules. The deposit and substrate are treated as a continuous entity allowing the simulation of the growth of a realistically sized deposit rather than a large number of cells representing each individual atom as in previously published simulations [Mitsuishi et al., Ultramicroscopy 103, 17 (2005); Silvis-Cividjian, Ph.D. thesis, University of Delft, 2002]. Such formulation allows for simple coupling of the STE with the dynamic growth of the nanopillar. Accurate ground-based measurements of leaf area index (LAI) are needed for validation of remote sensing-based retrievals used in models estimating plant water use, stress, carbon assimilation and other land surface processes. Several methods for indirect LAI estimation with the Plant Canopy Analyzer (PCA, LAI-2200C, LI-COR, Lincoln, NE, USA) were evaluated using destructive (direct) leaf area measurements in three split-canopy vineyards and one double-vertical vineyard in California, as part of the Grape Remote sensing and Atmospheric Profile and Evapotranspiration eXperiment (GRAPEX). A method with the sensor facing the canopy, and four readings occurring evenly across the interrow space, had a coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.87 and relative root mean square error (RRMSE) of 16%, when compared to direct LAI measurements via destructive sampling. A previously used method, with the sensor facing down-row, showed lower correlation to direct LAI (R2 = 0.75, RRMSE = 33%) and underestimation which was mitigated by removing the outer sensor rings from analysis. A PCA method is recommended for rapid and accurate LAI estimation in split-canopy vineyards, though local calibration may be required. The method was tested within small units of ground surface area, which compliments high-resolution datasets such as those acquired by small unmanned aerial vehicles. Carcharhinus obsolerus is described based on three specimens from Borneo, Thailand and Vietnam in the Western Central Pacific. It belongs to the porosus subgroup which is characterised by having the second dorsal-fin insertion opposite the anal-fin midbase. It most closely resembles C. borneensis but differs in tooth morphology and counts and a number of morphological characters, including lack of enlarged hyomandibular pores which are diagnostic of C. borneensis. The historic range of C. obsolerus sp. nov. is under intense fishing pressure and this species has not been recorded anywhere in over 80 years. There is an urgent need to assess its extinction risk status for the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. With so few known records, there is a possibility that Carcharhinus obsolerus sp. nov. has been lost from the marine environment before any understanding could be gained of its full historic distribution, biology, ecosystem role, and importance in local fisheries. But before that, Halleck was a county prosecutor in northwestern Indiana, serving from 1924 to 1926 and again from 1928 to 1934. In that capacity, he prosecuted a wide variety of cases, many of which lend interesting historical perspective to how Prohibition and the Great Depression affected people at the local and county levels. Abstract: There have been concerns that treatment of overactive bladder with β3‐adrenoceptor agonists may potentially have detrimental cardiovascular (CV) side effects. We evaluated the CV safety of mirabegron, a β3‐adrenoceptor agonist, alone and in combination therapy with the antimuscarinic agent solifenacin. The SYNERGY trial was a multinational, multicenter, randomized, double‐blind, parallel‐group, placebo and active‐controlled phase 3 trial. Patients were randomized to receive solifenacin 5 mg + mirabegron 50 mg (combination 5 + 50 mg), solifenacin 5 mg + mirabegron 25 mg (combination 5 + 25 mg), solifenacin 5 mg monotherapy, mirabegron 25 mg monotherapy, mirabegron 50 mg monotherapy, or placebo for a 12‐week double‐blind treatment period. A total of 3398 patients were included in the study. Mean changes from baseline to the end of therapy in ECG parameters were similar across treatment groups, although there was an increase in heart rate of 1 beat/minute in the mirabegron treatment groups. There were no clinically meaningful differences in change from baseline in QTcF between monotherapies and placebo and between monotherapies and combination therapy. There were very few major CV events: 1 of 853 (0.1%) with a nonfatal myocardial infarction in the combination 5 + 25 mg group, 2 of 848 (0.2%) with a nonfatal stroke in the combination 5 + 50 mg group, and no events in the other groups. This CV safety analysis of the combination of mirabegron and solifenacin showed rates of CV events comparable with those for monotherapy treatments based on assessments of vital signs, electrocardiograms, and adjudicated CV events. In clinical practice, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) tends to be used solely for diagnosing hypertension, especially to identify white-coat and masked hypertension. However, ABPM can provide additional information to guide the management and drug treatment of hypertension. In this brief review, the general principles governing the use of ABPM in clinical practice, such as the devices and software, recording requirements, the thresholds for the day, night and 24-hour periods and how often to repeat ABPM are summarized. Objective: Patients with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk of developing heart failure (HF). Enhanced recognition of patients at risk for HF would help guide therapeutic decisions.Research Design and Methods: We investigated the prognostic implications of changes in N-terminal B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) concentration in patients with type 2 diabetes and ischemic heart disease who were enrolled in the Examination of Cardiovascular Outcomes with Alogliptin versus Standard of Care (EXAMINE) trial, a phase 3b trial of alogliptin, a dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) inhibitor. Patients with type 2 diabetes and a recent acute coronary syndrome event were eligible. NT-proBNP was measured at baseline and 6 months. Cardiovascular (CV) death or hospitalization for HF was the end point of principal interest for this analysis.Results: We observed a strong graded relationship between increasing baseline and 6-month NT-proBNP concentration and the incidence of major CV events (P < 0.001). After adjusting for potential confounders, NT-proBNP at baseline was independently associated with the development of major CV events, in particular hospitalization for HF. Patients who had persistently high NT-proBNP (P < 0.001) or developed high NT-proBNP at 6 months (P < 0.001) were at a significantly higher risk for CV death/HF than those in whom NT-proBNP remained low at both time points or who had a high NT-proBNP value at baseline that subsequently declined to the low category. Absolute changes in NT-proBNP by 6 months were also strongly associated with subsequent outcomes. Treatment with a DPP-4 inhibitor did not meaningfully alter NT-proBNP concentrations (P = 0.20).Conclusions: Serial monitoring of NT-proBNP in patients with type 2 diabetes and ischemic heart disease may be useful for identifying patients at highest risk for HF. Raman spectra were measured on bulk Na2O·(2-x)SiO2·xGeO2 glasses, where x varied from 0 to 2, and on Na2O·SiO2·xGeO2 glasses, where x varied from 0 to 1. Raman spectra were measured also on Na2O·(1-x)SiO2·xGeO2 glasses crystallized at 650 °C, mostly a solid solution with the β-Na2Si2O5 structure at x between 0 and 1.5. The spectra of the glasses as well as the crystalline solid solutions can be interpreted in terms of random substitution of Ge for Si. The symmetric stretching vibrations of the nonbridging bonds Si–O-, Ge–O-, -O–Si–O-, and -O–Ge–O- are localized and exhibit two-mode behavior. Within primary health care, evidenced-based medicine (EBM) remains the primary methodology for examining the efficacy of medical treatments. Although EBM has dramatically improved treatment outcomes, it fails to reflect the full spectrum of factors involved in the care and healing of patients. As a result, many physicians have adopted narrative based medicine (NBM) within their clinical practice and research. Unlike EBM, NBM focuses on examining the intertwining narratives found between physician-patient relationships and society. In the framework of NBM, the physician aims to utilize the narratives of themselves and their patients to address the relational and psychological dimensions involved in both treatment and healing. Currently, there is a growing movement that seeks to reconnect EBM care models of addiction treatment to the larger and more enduring lived experience of personal and family recovery. Background: Cardiovascular risk is increased in patients with gout. We compared cardiovascular outcomes associated with febuxostat, a nonpurine xanthine oxidase inhibitor, with those associated with allopurinol, a purine base analogue xanthine oxidase inhibitor, in patients with gout and cardiovascular disease.Methods: We conducted a multicenter, double-blind, noninferiority trial involving patients with gout and cardiovascular disease; patients were randomly assigned to receive febuxostat or allopurinol and were stratified according to kidney function. The trial had a prespecified noninferiority margin of 1.3 for the hazard ratio for the primary end point (a composite of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, or unstable angina with urgent revascularization).Results: In total, 6190 patients underwent randomization, received febuxostat or allopurinol, and were followed for a median of 32 months (maximum, 85 months). The trial regimen was discontinued in 56.6% of patients, and 45.0% discontinued follow-up. In the modified intention-to-treat analysis, a primary end-point event occurred in 335 patients (10.8%) in the febuxostat group and in 321 patients (10.4%) in the allopurinol group (hazard ratio, 1.03; upper limit of the one-sided 98.5% confidence interval [CI], 1.23; P=0.002 for noninferiority). All-cause and cardiovascular mortality were higher in the febuxostat group than in the allopurinol group (hazard ratio for death from any cause, 1.22 [95% CI, 1.01 to 1.47]; hazard ratio for cardiovascular death, 1.34 [95% CI, 1.03 to 1.73]). The results with regard to the primary end point and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the analysis of events that occurred while patients were being treated were similar to the results in the modified intention-to-treat analysis.Conclusions: In patients with gout and major cardiovascular coexisting conditions, febuxostat was noninferior to allopurinol with respect to rates of adverse cardiovascular events. Abstract: A double‐blind, 4‐period crossover study (NCT01327066) was conducted to assess the effect of the novel norepinephrine prodrug droxidopa on the QT interval in in healthy subjects. Subjects were randomized to receive a single dose of droxidopa 600 mg (maximal dose) and 2000 mg (supratherapeutic dose) compared with the positive control, moxifloxacin 400 mg, and placebo, each separated by a 3‐day washout period. Patients were monitored by continuous Holter monitoring, and electrocardiograms (ECGs) were extracted 0.5–23 hours after dosing. Blood samples for pharmacokinetic analysis were collected before dosing and after ECG data collection. The primary end point was the time‐matched placebo‐adjusted change from baseline in the individually corrected QT (QTcI). The time‐averaged QTcI mean placebo‐corrected changes from baseline for droxidopa 600 and 2000 mg were 0.1 milliseconds (90%CI, ‐0.9 to 1.0 milliseconds) and 0.3 milliseconds (90%CI, ‐0.6 to 1.3 milliseconds), respectively, and 9 milliseconds (90%CI, 8.4–10.3 milliseconds) for moxifloxacin. This study found no effect of either dose of droxidopa on cardiac repolarization using QTcI. Analysis of the pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic relationship and cardiac repolarization showed no association with droxidopa exposure. There were no clinically relevant effects of droxidopa on heart rate, atrioventricular conduction, or cardiac depolarization identified. No morphologic ECG changes were observed. DNA sequence data from mitochondrial genomes and c. 1000 nuclear exons were analysed for a complete taxon sampling of manta and devilrays (Mobulidae) to estimate a current molecular phylogeny for the family. The resulting inferences were combined with morphological information to adopt an integrated approach to resolving the taxonomic arrangement of the family. The members of the genus Manta were found to consistently nest within the Mobula species and consequently the genus Manta is placed into the synonymy of Mobula. Mobula eregoodootenkee, M. japanica and M. rochebrunei were each found to be junior synonyms of M. kuhlii, M. mobular and M. hypostoma, respectively. The mitochondrial and nuclear tree topologies were in agreement except for the placement of M. tarapacana which was basal to all other mobulids in the nuclear exon analysis, but as the sister group to the M. alfredi- M. birostris-M. mobular clade in the mitochondrial genome analysis. Results from this study are used to a revise the taxonomy for the family Mobulidae. We report major-element, trace-element, and radiogenic-isotope analyses of 49 lavas and xenoliths as well as 35 40Ar/39Ar ages from Grenada, Kick 'em Jenny submarine volcano, and several Grenadine Islands. Grenada magmas are compositionally unusual in several respects compared to other subduction-related magmas. Particularly controversial is the extent to which compositions reflect the presence of subducted sediment in their sources or assimilation of sediment in the arc crust and the relationship between two distinct Grenada magma series, the Sr-rich and ankaramitic C series and olivinemicrophyric M series, erupted on the island. New 40Ar/39Ar ages show that eruption of these magmas has been interwoven both in time and space over the past 6 million years, during which the present volcanic edifice of Grenada has been built, indicating they share a common plumbing system. Consistent with earlier studies, our data show that the two series are isotopically distinct in their most mafic examples. At least 0.6% of a subducted sediment component must be added to depleted mantle to explain M-series isotopic compositions; considerably less, ~0.2%, subducted sediment is present in the C-series source. Trace elements and isotope ratios of both series are best modeled by the addition of slab-derived components predominantly through silicate melts, but the addition of hydrous fluids is also required, with the C series requiring a greater fluid component than the M series. This indicates the top of the slab is at or above its solidus beneath Grenada. C-series parental magmas are generated by significantly smaller peridotite melt fractions than M-series parents and may contain a fraction of pyroxenite melt as well. Radiogenic-isotope ratios in C-series basalts correlate significantly with MgO, but oxygen-isotope ratios do not. This and other aspects of their evolution, including decreasing K2O/Na2O and Sr concentrations with decreasing MgO, cannot be explained by sediment assimilation previously proposed. Instead, these features are readily explained by mixing with evolved M-series magmas stored in the arc crust and, perhaps, assimilation of their crystallization products. Such mixing may also affect M-series magmas, but because M-series magmas constitute three-fourths of Grenada igneous products and because parent M-series magmas are notably more heterogeneous, the effects of this mixing are less obvious. Any assimilation of sediment within the arc crust has at best second-order effects of magma compositions. The geochemistry of a pillow basalt from Mayreau Island is consistent with an earlier interpretation that the Grenadine Platform consists of uplifted oceanic crust formed through Eocene backarc spreading. Union Island consists of supra-subduction andesites and basalts (erupted between 6.5 and 3 million years ago) that are similar to those of Grenada. Kick 'em Jenny volcano is a distinct magma system from Grenada, but the neighboring volcanic islet of Isle de Caille is magmatically part of Grenada. A dacite dike cutting sedimentary rocks of the Tufton Hall Formation on Grenada yielded a 40Ar/39Ar age of 37.9 ± 0.2 Ma, suggesting the existence of supra-subduction volcanism in the region since the Eocene. Replacing passive ion-exchange membranes, like Nafion, with membranes that use light to drive ion transport would allow membranes in photoelectrochemical technologies to serve in an active role. Toward this, we modified perfluorosulfonic acid ionomer membranes with organic pyrenol-based photoacid dyes to sensitize the membranes to visible light and initiate proton transport. Covalent modification of the membranes was achieved by reacting Nafion sulfonyl fluoride poly- (perfluorosulfonyl fluoride) membranes with the photoacid 8- hydroxypyrene-1,3,6-tris(2-aminoethylsulfonamide). The modified membranes were strongly colored and maintained a high selectivity for cations over anions. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and ionexchange measurements together provided strong evidence of covalent bond formation between the photoacids and the polymer membranes. Visible-light illumination of the photoacid-modified membranes resulted in a maximum power-producing ionic photoresponse of ~100 μA/cm2 and ~1 mV under 40 Suns equivalent excitation with 405 nm light. In comparison, membranes that did not contain photoacids and instead contained ionically associated RuII-polypyridyl coordination compound dyes, which are not photoacids, exhibited little-to-no photoeffects (~1 μA/cm2). These disparate photocurrents, yet similar yields for nonradiative excited-state decay from the photoacids and the RuII dyes, suggest temperature gradients were not likely the cause of the observed photovoltaic action from photoacid-modified membranes. Moreover, spectral response measurements supported that light absorption by the covalently bound photoacids was required in order to observe photoeffects. These results represent the first demonstration of photovoltaic action from an ion-exchange membrane and offer promise for supplementing the power demands of electrochemical processes with renewable sunlight-driven ion transport. The efficacy and safety of azilsartan medoxomil (AZL-M) were evaluated in African-American patients with hypertension in a 6-week, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, for which the primary end point was change from baseline in 24-hour mean systolic blood pressure (BP). There were 413 patients, with a mean age of 52 years, 57% women, and baseline 24-hour BP of 146/91 mm Hg. Treatment differences in 24-hour systolic BP between AZL-M 40 mg and placebo (-5.0 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval, -8.0 to -2.0) and AZL-M 80 mg and placebo (-7.8 mm Hg; 95% confidence interval, -10.7 to -4.9) were significant (P≤.001 vs placebo for both comparisons). Changes in the clinic BPs were similar to the ambulatory BP results. Incidence rates of adverse events were comparable among the treatment groups, including those of a serious nature. Phylogenomic analysis of large genome-wide sequence data sets can resolve phylogenetic tree topologies for large species groups, help test the accuracy of and improve resolution for earlier multi-locus studies and reveal the level of agreement or concordance within partitions of the genome for various tree topologies. Here we used a target-capture approach to sequence 1088 single-copy exons for more than 200 labrid fishes together with more than 100 outgroup taxa to generate a new data-rich phylogeny for the family Labridae. Our time-calibrated phylogenetic analysis of exon-capture data pushes the root node age of the family Labridae back into the Cretaceous to about 79 Ma years ago. The monotypic Centrogenys vaigiensis , and the order Uranoscopiformes (stargazers) are identified as the sister lineages of Labridae. The phylogenetic relationships among major labrid subfamilies and within these clades were largely congruent with prior analyses of select mitochondrial and nuclear datasets. However, the position of the tribe Cirrhilabrini (fairy and flame wrasses) showed discordance, resolving either as the sister to a crown julidine clade or alternatively sister to a group formed by the labrines, cheilines and scarines. Exploration of this pattern using multiple approaches leads to slightly higher support for this latter hypothesis, highlighting the importance of genome-level data sets for resolving short internodes at key phylogenetic positions in a large, economically important groups of coral reef fishes. BACKGROUND: We aimed to describe the relationship between changes in highsensitivity cardiac troponin I (hsTnI) and cardiovascular outcomes. METHODS: The EXAMINE trial (Examination of Cardiovascular Outcomes With Alogliptin Versus Standard of Care) was a phase IIIb clinical outcomes trial designed to evaluate the cardiovascular safety of alogliptin, a nonselective dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitor. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, glycohemoglobin between 6.5% and 11% (or between 7% and 11% if they were on insulin), and a recent acute coronary syndrome (between 15 and 90 days before randomization) were eligible for the trial. hsTnI was measured using the Abbott ARCHITECT assay at baseline and 6 months in patients randomized in the EXAMINE trial. The primary end point of the trial was cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke. Cardiovascular death or heart failure was a prespecified, adjudicated secondary end point. RESULTS: At baseline, hsTnI was detectable (≥1.9 ng/L) in 93% of patients and ˃99th percentile upper reference limit in 16%. There was a strong relationship between increasing hsTnI, both at baseline and 6 months, and the incidence of cardiovascular events through 24 months (P<0.001 for each). Patients with undetectable hsTnI at baseline and 6 months were at the lowest risk of future cardiovascular events. Stable patients with hsTnI ≥99th percentile upper reference limit at 6 months were at increased risk of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke compared with patients with hsTnI <99 percentile upper reference limit irrespective of whether hsTnI was newly elevated (28.1% versus 8.8%; adjusted hazard ratio, 2.65; 95% confidence interval, 1.64–4.28; P<0.001) or persistently so (22.5% versus 8.8%; adjusted hazard ratio, 1.90; 95% confidence interval, 1.33–2.70; P<0.001). Alogliptin neither increased nor decreased the risk of cardiovascular events compared with placebo in patients with high baseline hsTnI (22.3% versus 23.0%; hazard ratio, 0.87; 95% confidence interval, 0.60–1.25; P=0.44). CONCLUSIONS: Serial assessment of hsTnI revealed a substantial proportion of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus without clinically recognized events had dynamic or persistently elevated values and were at high risk of recurrent events. hsTnI may have a role in personalizing preventive strategies in patients with diabetes mellitus based on risk. This article traces the reception of a “science comic book” by various audiences including readers and reviewers after publication as well as grant application review committees vetting the proposed project in its conceptual stage. Specifically, the work is a biology textbook containing comics-style visual explanations couched in the form of an imaginative story interwoven with and supplementing traditional text-based explanations of the same ideas. The analysis uses Genette’s concept of “paratexts” (i.e., a class of speech genres comprising those supplementary texts that contextualize and inform readers’ interpretations of the primary text that they accompany) to examine the rhetoric of the visual in the discourse of science education. This analysis observes that the stigmatization of comics as a medium played some role in how readers, critics, and reviewers responded to the text. The implications of this stigma for cultural conceptions of science and their relationships to other knowledge domains, including the arts and humanities, raise a concern for the mediation of public impressions of science as an institution. Prior to the civil rights movement, most cities in the United States had at least one racially segregated neighborhood-a place where the Others lived. This was typically a geographic location designated by the White community as the area in which non-Whites could reside. In Boise, Idaho, African Americans and other non-Whites lived in the River Street neighborhood, a multiethnic and multiracial enclave that provided shelter from discrimination. While African Americans comprised only a portion of the neighborhood's population, it was stigmatized as a Black neighborhood and was segregated from the rest of the town. Oral-history interviews and archival research conducted as part of the River Street Digital History Project revealed the way the neighborhood was remembered by both Black and White residents. As a segregated place on the landscape, the River Street neighborhood provides an opportunity to examine the role structural racial hierarchies played in the creation of Whiteness for Boise's European American community.
