Liquid crystal elastomer films that morph into cones are strikingly capable lifters. Thus motivated, we combine theory, numerics, and experiments to reexamine the load-bearing capacity of conical shells. We show that a cone squashed between frictionless surfaces buckles at a smaller load, even in scaling, than the classical Seide/Koiter result. Such buckling begins in a region of greatly amplified azimuthal compression generated in an outer boundary layer with oscillatory bend. Experimentally and numerically, buckling then grows sub-critically over the full cone. We derive a new thin-limit formula for the critical load, $\propto t^{5/2}$, and validate it numerically. We also investigate deep post-buckling, finding further instabilities producing intricate states with multiple Pogorelov-type curved ridges arranged in concentric-circles or Archimedean spirals. Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are shape-changing materials that exhibit large deformations in response to applied stimuli. Local control of the orientation of LCEs spatially directs the deformation of these materials to realize spontaneous shape change in response to stimuli. Prior approaches to shape programming in LCEs utilize patterning techniques that involve the detailed inscription of spatially varying nematic fields to produce sheets. These patterned sheets deform into elaborate geometries with complex Gaussian curvatures. Here, we present an alternative approach to realize shape-morphing in LCEs where spatial patterning of the crosslink density locally regulates the material deformation magnitude on either side of a prescribed interface curve. We also present a simple mathematical model describing the behavior of these materials. Further experiments coupled with the mathematical model demonstrate the control of the sign of Gaussian curvature, which is used in combination with heat transfer effects to design LCEs that self-clean as a result of temperature-dependent actuation properties.

Deformations of amorphous polymer networks prepared with significant concentrations of liquid crystalline mesogens have been recently reported to undergo mechanotropic phase transitions. Here, we report that these mechanotropic phase transitions are accompanied by an elastocaloric response ($\Delta T = 2.9 \text{ K}$). Applied uniaxial strain to the elastomeric polymer network transitions the organization of the material from a disordered, amorphous state (order parameter $Q=0$) to the nematic phase ($Q=0.47$). Both the magnitude of the elastocaloric temperature change and mechanically induced order parameter are dependent on the concentration of liquid crystal mesogens in the material. While the observed temperature changes in these materials are smaller than those observed in shape memory alloys, the responsivity, defined as the temperature change divided by the input stress, is larger by an order of magnitude., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures. The blue phases are observed in highly chiral liquid crystalline compositions that nascently organize into a three-dimensional, crystalline nanostructure. The periodicity of the unit cell lattice parameters is on the order of the wavelength of visible light and accordingly, the blue phases exhibit a selective reflection as a photonic crystal. Here, we detail the synthesis of liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) that retain blue phase I, blue phase II, and blue phase III. The mechanical properties and deformation of LCEs retaining the blue phases are contrasted to the cholesteric phase in fully solid elastomers with glass transition temperatures below room temperature. Mechanical deformation and chemical swelling of the lightly crosslinked polymer networks induces lattice asymmetry in the blue phase LCE evident in the tuning of the selective reflection. The lattice periodicity of the blue phase LCE is minimally affected by temperature. The oblique lattice planes of the blue phase LCEs tilt and red-shift in response to mechanical deformation. The retention of the blue phases in fully solid, elastomeric films could enable new functional implementations in photonics, sensing, and energy applications.

Nematic elastomers dramatically change their shape in response to diverse stimuli including light and heat. In this paper, we provide a systematic framework for the design of complex three dimensional shapes through the actuation of heterogeneously patterned nematic elastomer sheets. These sheets are composed of \textit{nonisometric origami} building blocks which, when appropriately linked together, can actuate into a diverse array of three dimensional faceted shapes. We demonstrate both theoretically and experimentally that: 1) the nonisometric origami building blocks actuate in the predicted manner, 2) the integration of multiple building blocks leads to complex multi-stable, yet predictable, shapes, 3) we can bias the actuation experimentally to obtain a desired complex shape amongst the multi-stable shapes. We then show that this experimentally realized functionality enables a rich possible design landscape for actuation using nematic elastomers. We highlight this landscape through theoretical examples, which utilize large arrays of these building blocks to realize a desired three dimensional origami shape. In combination, these results amount to an engineering design principle, which we hope will provide a template for the application of nematic elastomers to emerging technologies.

The shape of liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) with spatial variation in the director orientation can be transformed by exposure to a stimulus. Here, informed by previously reported analytical treatments, we prepare complex spiral patterns imprinted into LCEs and quantify the resulting shape transformation. Quantification of the stimuli-induced shapes reveals good agreement between predicted and experimentally observed curvatures. We conclude this communication by reporting a design strategy to allow LCE films to be anchored at their external boundaries onto rigid substrates without incurring internal, mechanical-mismatch stresses upon actuation, a critical advance to the realization of shape transformation of LCEs in practical device applications.

Considerable recent attention has been given to the study of shape formation using modern responsive materials that can be preprogrammed to undergo spatially inhomogeneous local deformations. In particular, nematic liquid crystal polymer networks offer exciting possibilities in this context. In this paper, we discuss the generation of Gaussian curvature in thin nematic sheets using smooth in-plane director fields patterned across the surface. We highlight specific patterns which encode constant Gaussian curvature of prescribed sign and magnitude and present experimental results which appear to support the theoretical predictions. Specifically, we provide experimental evidence for the realization of positive and negative Gaussian curvature in glassy and elastomeric liquid crystal polymer networks through the stimulation of smoothly varying in-plane director fields., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures
