14. Teacher and Librarian Perspectives on Information Literacy, and the Secondary-School Library's Relationship to Information Literacy in the Classroom

Abstract

This article reports on the quantitative data from a 2017 survey of secondary-school teachers and librarians in Aotearoa New Zealand. Findings suggest that librarians and library services are not seen by teachers or librarians to be centrally involved in the development of information literacy (IL) skills in students, and that teachers may lack full awareness of what services school libraries offer. There was mixed evidence for the idea that teachers and librarians share a definition of IL, and our findings suggest that, while both groups value IL skills, particularly in academic contexts, they don't necessarily see those skills as promoted by "The New Zealand Curriculum" ("NZC"59-88 ) and the National Certificates of Educational Achievement (NCEA). We conclude with a discussion of the implications of these findings and provide recommendations.

15. Serving up a Smorgasbord of Collaborative Practice: Keys to Approaching Collaboration in Your School and How to Encourage Teaching Colleagues to Participate in This Journey with You

Abstract

Collaborative practice which acknowledges differentiated learning needs of students, diverse long term educational outcomes, and acknowledges the respective skill sets of both teacher and librarian in delivering a curriculum which embraces the future focused needs of 21st century learners--to be literate and numerate, critical and creative thinkers, active seekers, users and creators of knowledge, informed decision makers, and active participants in their future world. Looking at the journey of two school library managers and their diverse school communities, both involved in the Otago/Southland Information Literacy Project from June 2007 to November 2008. This project, commissioned by the National Library of New Zealand in collaboration with the Otago University Education Department and the New Zealand Ministry of Education, involved the participation of librarians and teachers from seven schools from the Otago and Southland regions of New Zealand looking at a collaborative approach to student learning outcomes and focused on year 8 students. Collaboration in the case studies outlined has resulted in improved communication and understanding of expertise between teachers and librarians, and in improved learning outcomes for students. The work is just beginning, and as the information environment continues its exponential expansion, the combined strength of collaborative teaching will share the burden between teachers and librarians. Both parties bring individual strengths to the partnership, and each party also learns from the other, benefiting the professional practise of each. Students are better served by working with two professionals, and the benefit of seeing their teachers working collaboratively, as we so often expect them to do, cannot be overstated.

16. Under-Recognised, Underused, and Undervalued: School Libraries and Librarians in New Zealand Secondary School Curriculum Planning and Delivery

Abstract

Multiple international studies have confirmed the positive impact of library services and teacher--librarian partnerships on delivering curriculum outcomes and quality student learning in secondary schools. Despite this, there are indications internationally that school libraries are in decline. This article uses qualitative data from a national survey of teachers and librarians in New Zealand secondary schools to investigate teacher and librarian attitudes and beliefs about the role of library services as a space to help develop "The New Zealand Curriculum's" (Ministry of Education, 2007) ("NZC") future-focused vision of knowledgeable, critically and creatively engaged citizens, and the teaching of its attendant competencies. Our findings suggest that teachers' and librarians' beliefs and attitudes towards the library and to each other differ significantly, leading to an underutilisation of library services as a central resource for effective curriculum implementation. We conclude by arguing for a systemic revision of how libraries are positioned, staffed, and resourced in schools, that will change teacher and management beliefs to more closely align with the espoused pedagogical position of "NZC" and, ultimately, and most importantly, to engender sustained gains in student learning.

The author relates some of the challenges he encountered in preparing students at James Hargest College in Invercargill, New Zealand for tertiary study as the college's library manager.
