Search

Using an established classification technique, we leverage standard observations and analyses to predict the progenitors of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). This technique, utilizing support vector machine (SVM) statistics, provides a more nuanced prediction than the previous two-component Gaussian mixture in duration of the prompt gamma-ray emission. Based on further covariance testing from \textit{Fermi}-GBM, \textit{Swift}-BAT, and \textit{Swift}-XRT data, we find that our classification based only on prompt emission properties gives perspective on the recent evidence that mergers and collapsars exist in both long and short GRB populations., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysics Journal as of 11 July 2024

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are ideal probes of the Universe at high redshift (z > 5), pinpointing the locations of the earliest star-forming galaxies and providing bright backlights that can be used to spectrally fingerprint the intergalactic medium and host galaxy during the period of reionization. Future missions such as Gamow Explorer are being proposed to unlock this potential by increasing the rate of identification of high-z GRBs to rapidly trigger observations from 6-10 m ground telescopes, JWST, and the Extremely Large Telescopes. Gamow was proposed to the NASA 2021 Medium-Class Explorer (MIDEX) program as a fast-slewing satellite featuring a wide-field lobster-eye X-ray telescope (LEXT) to detect and localize GRBs, and a 30 cm narrow-field multi-channel photo-z infrared telescope (PIRT) to measure their photometric redshifts using the Lyman-alpha dropout technique. To derive the PIRT sensitivity requirement we compiled a complete sample of GRB optical-near-infrared afterglows from 2008 to 2021, adding a total of 66 new afterglows to our earlier sample, including all known high-z GRB afterglows. We performed full light-curve and spectral-energy-distribution analyses of these afterglows to derive their true luminosity at very early times. For all the light curves, where possible, we determined the brightness at the time of the initial finding chart of Gamow, at different high redshifts and in different NIR bands. We then followed the evolution of the luminosity to predict requirements for ground and space-based follow-up. We find that a PIRT sensitivity of 15 micro-Jy (21 mag AB) in a 500 s exposure simultaneously in five NIR bands within 1000s of the GRB trigger will meet the Gamow mission requirement to recover > 80% of all redshifts at z > 5., Comment: 44 pages, 10 figures, 1 table. In this White Paper, we present recommendations for the scientific community and funding agencies to foster the infrastructure for a collaborative multi-messenger and time-domain astronomy (MMA/TDA) ecosystem. MMA/TDA is poised for breakthrough discoveries in the coming decade. In much the same way that expanding beyond the optical bandpass revealed entirely new and unexpected discoveries, cosmic messengers beyond light (i.e., gravitational waves, neutrinos, and cosmic rays) open entirely new windows to answer some of the most fundamental questions in (astro)physics: heavy element synthesis, equation of state of dense matter, particle acceleration, etc. This field was prioritized as a frontier scientific pursuit in the 2020 Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics via its "New Windows on the Dynamic Universe" theme. MMA/TDA science presents technical challenges distinct from those experienced in other disciplines. Successful observations require coordination across myriad boundaries -- different cosmic messengers, ground vs. space, international borders, etc. -- all for sources that may not be well localized, and whose brightness may be changing rapidly with time. Add that all of this work is undertaken by real human beings, with distinct backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and expectations, that often conflict. To address these challenges and help MMA/TDA realize its full scientific potential in the coming decade (and beyond), the second in a series of community workshops sponsored by the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA titled "Windows on the Universe: Establishing the Infrastructure for a Collaborative Multi-Messenger Ecosystem" was held on October 16-18, 2023 in Tucson, AZ. Future detection of high-redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) will be an important tool for studying the early Universe. Fast and accurate redshift estimation for detected GRBs is key for encouraging rapid follow-up observations by ground- and space-based telescopes. Low-redshift dusty interlopers pose the biggest challenge for GRB redshift estimation using broad photometric bands, as their high extinction can mimic a high-redshift GRB. To assess false alarms of high-redshift GRB photometric measurements, we simulate and fit a variety of GRBs using phozzy, a simulation code developed to estimate GRB photometric redshifts, and test the ability to distinguish between high- and low-redshift GRBs when using simultaneously observed photometric bands. We run the code with the wavelength bands and instrument parameters for the Photo-z Infrared Telescope (PIRT), an instrument designed for the Gamow mission concept. We explore various distributions of host galaxy extinction as a function of redshift, and their effect on the completeness and purity of a high-redshift GRB search with the PIRT. We find that for assumptions based on current observations, the completeness and purity range from $\sim 82$ to $88\%$ and from $\sim 84$ to $>99\%$, respectively. For the priors optimized to reduce false positives, only $\sim 0.6\%$ of low-redshift GRBs will be mistaken as a high-redshift one, corresponding to $\sim 1$ false alarm per 500 detected GRBs., Comment: 14 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Photo-z InfraRed Telescope (PIRT) is an instrument on the Gamow Explorer, currently proposed for a NASA Astrophysics Medium Explorer. PIRT works in tandem with a companion wide-field instrument, the Lobster Eye X-ray Telescope (LEXT), that will identify x-ray transients likely to be associated with high redshift gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) or electromagnetic counterparts to gravitational wave (GW) events. After receiving an alert trigger from LEXT, the spacecraft will slew to center the PIRT field of view on the transient source. PIRT will then begin accumulating data simultaneously in five bands spanning 0.5 - 2.5 microns over a 10 arc-minute field of view. Each PIRT field will contain many hundreds of sources, only one of which is associated with the LEXT transient. PIRT will gather the necessary data in order to identify GRB sources with redshift $z > 6$, with an expected source localization better than 1 arcsec. A near real-time link to the ground will allow timely follow-up as a target of opportunity for large ground-based telescopes or the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). PIRT will also allow localization and characterization of GW event counterparts. The Gamow Explorer will use Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) to: 1) probe the high redshift universe (z > 6) when the first stars were born, galaxies formed and Hydrogen was reionized; and 2) enable multi-messenger astrophysics by rapidly identifying Electro-Magnetic (IR/Optical/X-ray) counterparts to Gravitational Wave (GW) events. GRBs have been detected out to z ~ 9 and their afterglows are a bright beacon lasting a few days that can be used to observe the spectral fingerprints of the host galaxy and intergalactic medium to map the period of reionization and early metal enrichment. Gamow Explorer is optimized to quickly identify high-z events to trigger follow-up observations with JWST and large ground-based telescopes. A wide field of view Lobster Eye X-ray Telescope (LEXT) will search for GRBs and locate them with arc-minute precision. When a GRB is detected, the rapidly slewing spacecraft will point the 5 photometric channel Photo-z Infra-Red Telescope (PIRT) to identify high redshift (z > 6) long GRBs within 100s and send an alert within 1000s of the GRB trigger. An L2 orbit provides > 95% observing efficiency with pointing optimized for follow up by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and ground observatories. The predicted Gamow Explorer high-z rate is >10 times that of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory. The instrument and mission capabilities also enable rapid identification of short GRBs and their afterglows associated with GW events. Athena is an X-ray observatory-class mission concept, developed from April to December 2011 as a result of the reformulation exercise for L-class mission proposals in the framework of ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025. Athena's science case is that of the Universe of extremes, from Black Holes to Large-scale structure. The specific science goals are structured around three main pillars: "Black Holes and accretion physics", "Cosmic feedback" and "Large-scale structure of the Universe". Underpinning these pillars, the study of hot astrophysical plasmas offered by Athena broadens its scope to virtually all corners of Astronomy. The Athena concept consists of two co-aligned X-ray telescopes, with focal length 12 m, angular resolution of 10" or better, and totalling an effective area of 1 m2 at 1 keV (0.5 m2 at 6 keV). At the focus of one of the telescopes there is a Wide Field Imager (WFI) providing a field of view of 24'\times 24', 150 eV spectral resolution at 6 keV, and high count rate capability. At the focus of the other telescope there is the X-ray Microcalorimeter Spectrometer (XMS), a cryogenic instrument offering a spectral resolution of 3 eV over a field of view of 2.3' \times 2.3'. Although Athena has not been selected as ESA's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 L1 mission, its science goals and concept conform the basis of what should become ESA's X-ray astronomy flagship., Comment: 94 pages

The International X-Ray Observatory (IXO) will address fundamental questions in astrophysics, including "When did the first SMBH form? How does large scale structure evolve? What happens close to a black hole? What is the connection between these processes? What is the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density?" This report presents an overview of the assessment study phase of the IXO candidate ESA L-class Cosmic Vision mission. We provide a description of the IXO science objectives, the mission implementation and the payload. The performance will offer more than an order of magnitude improvement in capability compared with Chandra and XMM-Newton. This observatory-class facility comprises a telescope with highly nested grazing incidence optics with a performance requirement of 2.5 sq.m. of effective area at 1.25 keV with a 5" PSF. There is an instrument complement that provides capabilities in imaging, spatially resolved spectroscopy, timing, polarimetry and high resolution dispersive spectroscopy. Since earlier submissions to the Astro2010 Decadal Survey, substantial technological progress has been made, particularly in the mirror development. Risk reduction measures and important programmatic choices have also been identified. An independent internal Technical and Programmatic Review has also been carried out by ESA, concluding with positive recommendations. One of the main themes in extragalactic astronomy for the next decade will be the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time. Many future observatories, including JWST, ALMA, GMT, TMT and E-ELT will intensively observe starlight over a broad redshift range, out to the dawn of the modern Universe when the first galaxies formed. It has, however, become clear that the properties and evolution of galaxies are intimately linked to the growth of their central black holes. Understanding the formation of galaxies, and their subsequent evolution, will therefore be incomplete without similarly intensive observations of the accretion light from supermassive black holes (SMBH) in galactic nuclei. To make further progress, we need to chart the formation of typical SMBH at z>6, and their subsequent growth over cosmic time, which is most effectively achieved with X-ray observations. Swift discovered the high redshift (z=6.29) GRB050904 with the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) and began observing with its narrow field instruments 161 s after the burst onset. This gamma-ray burst is the most distant cosmic explosion ever observed. Because of its high redshift, the X-ray Telescope (XRT) and BAT simultaneous observations provide 4 orders of magnitude of spectral coverage (0.2-150 keV; 1.4-1090 keV in the source rest frame) at a very early source-frame time (22 s). GRB050904 was a long, multi-peaked, bright GRB with strong variability during its entire evolution. The light curve observed by the XRT is characterized by the presence of a long flaring activity lasting up to 1-2 hours after the burst onset in the burst rest frame, with no evidence of a smooth power-law decay following the prompt emission as seen in other GRBs. However, the BAT tail extrapolated to the XRT band joins the XRT early light curve and the overall behavior resembles that of a very long GRB prompt. The spectral energy distribution softens with time, with the photon index decreasing from -1.2 during the BAT observation to -1.9 at the end of the XRT observation. The dips of the late X-ray flares may be consistent with an underlying X-ray emission arising from the forward shock and with the properties of the optical afterglow reported by Tagliaferri et al. (2005b). We interpret the BAT and XRT data as a single continuous observation of the prompt emission from a very long GRB. Although the link between long Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) and supernovae (SNe) has been established, hitherto there have been no observations of the beginning of a supernova explosion and its intimate link to a GRB. In particular, we do not know however how a GRB jet emerges from the star surface nor how a GRB progenitor explodes. Here we report on observations of the close GRB060218 and its connection to SN2006aj. In addition to the classical non-thermal emission, GRB060218 shows a thermal component in its X-ray spectrum, which cools and shifts into the optical/UV band as time passes. We interpret these features as arising from the break out of a shock driven by a mildly relativistic shell into the dense wind surrounding the progenitor. Our observations allow us for the first time to catch a SN in the act of exploding, to directly observe the shock break-out and to provide strong evidence that the GRB progenitor was a Wolf-Rayet star., Comment: 12 pages, 3 color figures (final version). We present Swift and XMM observations of GRB 050326, detected by Swift-BAT. The fluence was 7.7x10^-6 erg cm^-2 (20-150 keV), and its spectrum was hard, with a power law photon index 1.25. The afterglow light curve did not show any break nor flares between ~1 hr and ~6 d after the burst, and decayed with a slope 1.70. The afterglow spectrum is well fitted by a power-law model, suffering absorption both in the Milky Way and in the host galaxy. The rest-frame Hydrogen column density is significant, N_H_z > 4x10^21 cm^-2, and the redshift of the absorber is z > 1.5. There was good agreement between the Swift-XRT and XMM results. By comparing the prompt and afterglow fluxes, we found that an early break occurred before the XRT observation. The properties of the GRB 050326 afterglow are well described by a spherical fireball expanding in a uniform external medium, so a further steepening is expected at later times. The lack of such a break constrains the jet angle to be >7 deg. Using the redshift constraints provided by the X-ray analysis, we also estimated that the beaming-corrected gamma-ray energy was >3x10^51 erg, at the high end of GRB energies. Despite the brightness in X rays, only deep limits could be placed by Swift-UVOT at optical/UV wavelengths. Thus, this GRB was "truly dark", with the optical-to-X-ray spectrum violating the synchrotron limit. The optical and X-ray observations are consistent either with an absorbed event or with a high-redshift one. To obey the Ghirlanda relation, a moderate/large redshift z>4.5 is required. Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs) are bright flashes of high energy photons that can last from about 10 milliseconds to 10 minutes. Their origin and nature have puzzled the scientific community for about 25 years until 1997, when the first X-ray afterglows of long (> 2 s duration) bursts were detected and the first optical and radio counterparts were found. These measurements established that long GRBs are typically at high redshift (z 1.6) and are in sub-luminous star-forming host galaxies. They are likely produced in core-collapse explosions of a class of massive stars that give rise to highly relativistic jets (collapsar model). Internal inhomogeneities in the velocity field of the relativistic expanding flow lead to collisions between fast moving and slow moving fluid shells and to the formation of internal shock waves. These shocks are believed to produce the observed prompt emission in the form of irregularly shaped and spaced pulses of gamma-rays, each pulse corresponding to a distinct internal collision. The expansion of the jet outward into the circumstellar medium is believed to give rise to ``external'' shocks, responsible for producing the smoothly fading afterglow emission seen in the X-ray, optical and radio bands. Here we report on the gamma-ray and x-ray observation of the most distant gamma-ray burst ever observed: its redshift of 6.29 translates to a distance of 13 billion light-years from Earth, corresponding to a time when the Universe was just 700 million to 750 million years old. The discovery of a gamma-ray burst at such a large redshift implies the presence of massive stars only 700 million years after the Big Bang. The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory took part in the multi-wavelength observing campaign of the massive, evolved star Eta Carinae in 2003 during its recent X-ray minimum. This paper reports on the results of these observations, mainly from the aspect of spectral change. Hard X-ray emission from the point source of Eta Carinae was detected even during the minimum. During the minimum the observed flux above 3 keV was ~3e-12 ergs cm-2 s-1, which is about one percent of the flux before the minimum. Changes in the spectral shape revealed two X-ray emission components in the central point source. One component is non-variable and has relatively cool plasma of kT~1 keV and moderate absorption, NH~5e22 cm-2. The plasma is probably located far from the star, possibly produced by the high speed polar wind from Eta Carinae. The other high temperature component has kT~5 keV and is strongly variable. This component shows an increase in the apparent column density from 5e22 cm-2 to 2e23 cm-2, probably originating near the heart of the binary system. These changes in NH were smaller than expected if the minimum is produced solely by an increase of hydrogen column density. The X-ray minimum seems to be dominated by a decrease of the apparent emission measure, suggesting that the brightest part of the X-ray emitting region is completely obscured during the minimum in the form of an eclipse. The Swift mission, scheduled for launch in early 2004, is a multiwavelength observatory for gamma-ray burst (GRB) astronomy. It is the first-of-its-kind autonomous rapid-slewing satellite for transient astronomy and pioneers the way for future rapid-reaction and multiwavelength missions. It will be far more powerful than any previous GRB mission, observing more than 100 bursts per year and performing detailed X-ray and UV/optical afterglow observations spanning timescales from 1 minute to several days after the burst. The objectives are to determine the origin of GRBs; classify GRBs and search for new types; study the interaction of the ultra-relativistic outflows of GRBs with their surrounding medium; and use GRBs to study the early universe out to z>10. The mission is being developed by a NASA-led international collaboration. It will carry three instruments: a new-generation wide-field gamma-ray (15-150 keV) detector; a narrow-field X-ray telescope; and a narrow-field UV/optical telescope. Redshift determinations will be made for most bursts. In addition to the primary GRB science, the mission will perform a hard X-ray survey to a sensitivity of ~1 mCrab (~2x10^{-11} erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} in the 15-150 keV band), more than an order of magnitude better than HEAO A-4. A flexible data and operations system will allow rapid follow-up observations of all types of high-energy transients, with rapid data downlink and uplink available through the NASA TDRSS system. The mission is currently funded for 2 years of operations and the spacecraft will have a lifetime to orbital decay of ~8 years. We present preliminary results of grating observations of YY Mensae and V824 Arae by Chandra and XMM-Newton. Spectral features are presented in the context of the emission measure distributions, the coronal abundances, and plasma electron densities. In particular, we observe a coronal N/C enhancement in YY Men believed to reflect the photospheric composition (CN cycle). We report an XMM-Newton observation of the Low mass X-ray Binary (LMXB) and black hole candidate 4U1755-33. This source had been a bright persistent source for at least 25 yrs, but in 1995 entered an extended quiescent phase. 4U1755-33 was not detected with an upper limit to the 2-10 keV luminosity of 5.10^31 erg/s (assuming a distance of 4 kpc) - consistent with the luminosity of other black hole candidates in a quiescent state. An unexpected result is the discovery of a narrow 7' long X-ray jet-like feature centered on the position of 4U1755-33. The spectrum of the jet is similar to that observed from other galactic and extragalactic jets thought to be associated with accreting black holes. The detection of a fossil jet provides additional evidence supporting the black hole candidacy of 4U1755-33. The spectral properties of three bright serendipitous sources in the field are reported and it is suggested these are background active galactic nuclei (AGN)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

Anomalous x-ray pulsars (AXPs) and soft gamma-ray repeaters (SGRs) are x-ray sources with unusual properties distinguishing them from both rotation-powered and most accretion-powered pulsars. Using archival ASCA data over the energy range 0.5-10.0 keV, we have studied the spectra of the persistent emission from these sources and their variation with spin-down rate. Using a single power law spectral model, we find that the overall hardness of the spectra increase with increasing spin-down rate, and therefore the spectral and spin-down mechanism are inextricably linked in these objects. In terms of the two-component blackbody plus power law spectral models, this correlation is seen as an increasing hardness of the high energy component with increasing spin-down rate, with the temperature of the low energy blackbody component remaining essentially constant. Also for the two component spectral model: the ratio of the 2-10 keV power law and bolometric blackbody luminosities gradually increases with the spin-down rate. The 8.7s X-ray pulsar 4U 0142+61 was monitored by BeppoSAX between January 1997 and February 1998. This source belongs to the rapidly growing class of "anomalous" X-ray pulsars (AXPs) which have pulse periods in the 6-12s range and no plausible optical, infrared or radio counterparts. The BeppoSAX periods measurements show that 4U 0142+61 continues its spin-down at a nearly constant rate of about 2 times 10^{-12}s s^{-1}. The 0.5-10 keV pulse shape is double peaked. The phase-averaged spectrum can be described by a steep absorbed power-law (Gamma about 4) plus a blackbody with kT = 0.4 keV. 4U 0142+61 was also detected serendipitously in a March 1996 RossiXTE observation pointed towards the nearby 1455s X-ray pulsar RX J0146.9+6121. The timing analysis results are reported for this observation and the spin history of 4U 0142+61 since 1979 is discussed., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in A&A

We report the results of quasi-simultaneous observations of the bright quasar 3C 273 using the BeppoSAX Low-Energy Concentrator Spectrometer (LECS) and the ASCA Solid-State Imaging Spectrometer (SIS). These observations are part of an intercalibration programme and demonstrate good agreement between both instruments in the common energy range 0.5-10 keV. In particular, the absorption feature discovered by BeppoSAX/LECS at $\sim$ 0.5 keV is consistently seen by ASCA/SIS. We present the most accurate measurement yet of the spectral shape of this absorption feature and provide constraints on its physical interpretation. A self-consistent warm absorber model in photoionization equilibrium only gives an adequate spectral fit if a very high velocity inflow is allowed for the warm absorber (v $\sim$ 0.36 c). The ionization parameter and the column density of the warm absorber are then $\sim$ 1 and $\sim$ 1.3e21 cm^-2, respectively. If the differences in best-fit neutral absorption column density between the LECS and each SIS are taken as estimates of the systematic spectral uncertainties, then these are < 0.8e20 and < 2.e20 cm^-2 (at 90 % confidence) for SIS0 and SIS1, respectively., Comment: 7 pages, 2 Postscript figures, accepted for publication in A&A

During a systematic search for periodic signals in a sample of ROSAT PSPC (0.1-2.4 keV) light curves, we discovered 12min large amplitude X-ray pulsations in 1WGA J1958.2+3232, an X-ray source which lies close to the galactic plane. The energy spectrum is well fit by a power law with a photon index of 0.8, corresponding to an X-ray flux of about 10E-12 ergs cmE-2 sE-1. The source is probably a long period, low luminosity X-ray pulsar, similar to X Per, or an intermediate polar., Comment: 5 pages (figures included). Accepted for publication on MNRAS

We present ASCA and ROSAT observations of the Be/X-ray binary pulsars RX J0146.9+6121 and X Persei between 1990 and 1996. Measuring the neutron star spin period and X-ray luminosity of X Persei shows that the episode of low X-ray luminosity and monotonic spin-down since 1978 continued to at least August 1995. ASCA and ROSAT HRI observations of RX J0146.9+6121 detected the pulsar with the longest known neutron star spin period at low luminosities after the X-ray outburst seen by EXOSAT in August 1984. The large spin period decrease seen between 1984 and 1993 has nearly stopped at a period of 1407.3 s in February 1996. We discuss that the X-ray outburst behaviour of X Persei with respect to its Be star phase changes observed in the optical can be caused by an asymmetry in the matter distribution around the Be star., Comment: 6 pages, LaTex, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in A&A

During a systematic search for periodic signals in a sample of ROSAT PSPC light curves, we discovered ~ 8.9s X-ray pulsations in 2E0050.1-7247, a variable X-ray source in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The source was detected several times between 1979 and 1993 at luminosity levels ranging from about 5 times 10^{34} erg/s up to 1.4 times 10^{36} erg/s with both the Einstein IPC and ROSAT PSPC. The X-ray energy spectrum is consistent with a power law spectrum which steepens as the source luminosity decreases. We revealed a pronounced Halpha activity from at least two B stars in the X-ray error circles. We present a conceptual design for a new X-ray all sky monitor (ASM). Compared with previous ASMs, its salient features are: (1) it has a focusing capability that increases the signal to background ratio by a factor of 3; (2) it has a broad-band width: 200 eV to 15 keV; (3) it has a large X-ray collection area: ~100 square cm; (4) it has a duty cycle of nearly 100%, and (5) it can measure the position of a new source with an accuracy of a few minutes of arc. We discovered strong 13s X-ray pulsations in the public Rosat PSPC light curve of HD49798, a 1.55d single-component spectroscopic binary containing a hydrogen depleted subdwarf O6 star. We find no evidence for period changes during the about 4hr Rosat pointing. The source X-ray spectrum is extremely soft, with an unabsorbed 0.1-2keV luminosity of a few times 10^32 erg s^-1 (distance of 650pc). A higher luminosity might be hidden in the EUV. Our results imply that the unseen companion is an accreting degenerate star, a white dwarf or, more likely, a neutron star. In either case HD49798 corresponds to a previously unobserved evolutionary stage of a massive binary system, after common envelope and spiral-in., Comment: 10 pages plus 2 postscript figures. AASTeX. We report on the results of the X-ray observing campaign of the massive, evolved star Eta Carinae in 2003 around its recent X-ray Minimum, mainly using data from the XMM-Newton observatory. These imaging observations show that the hard X-ray source associated with the Eta Carinae system does not completely disappear in any of the observations during the Minimum. The variation of the spectral shape revealed two emission components. One newly discovered component did not exhibit any variation on kilo-second to year-long timescales, in a combined analysis with earlier ASCA and ROSAT data, and might represent the collision of a high speed outflow from Eta Carinae with ambient gas clouds. The other emission component was strongly variable in flux but the temperature of the hottest plasma did not vary significantly at any orbital phase. Absorption to the hard emission, was about a factor of three larger than the absorption determined from the cutoff of the soft emission, and reached a maximum of approx.4 x 10(exp 23)/sq cm before the Minimum. The thermal Fe\rm XXV emission line showed significant excesses on both the red and blue sides of the line outside the Minimum and exhibited a large redward excess during the Minimum. This variation in the line profile probably requires an abrupt change in ionization balance in the shocked gas.

The Swift mission: scheduled for launch in early 2004: is a multiwavelength observatory for gamma-ray burst (GRB) astronomy. It is the first-of-its-kind autonomous rapid-slewing satellite for transient astronomy and pioneers the way for future rapid-reaction and multiwavelength missions. It will be far more powerful than any previous GRB mission, observing more than 100 bursts per year and performing detailed X-ray and UV/optical afterglow observations spanning timescales from 1 minute to several days after the burst. The objectives are to: 1) determine the origin of GFU3s; 2) classify GRBs and search for new types; 3) study the interaction of the ultra-relativistic outflows of GRBs with their surrounding medium; and 4) use GRBs to study the early universe out to z greater than 10. The mission is being developed by a NASA-led international collaboration. It will carry three instruments: a new-generation wide-field gamma-ray (15-150 keV) detector that will detect bursts, calculate 1-4 arcmin positions: and trigger autonomous spacecraft slews; a narrow-field X-ray telescope that will give 5 arcsec positions and perform spectroscopy in the 0.2 to 10 keV band; and a narrow-field UV/optical telescope that will operate in the 170-600 nm band and provide 0.3 arcsec positions and optical finding charts. Redshift determinations will be made for most bursts. In addition to the primary GRB science, the mission will perform a hard X-ray survey to a sensitivity of approx. 1 mCrab (approx. 2 x l0(exp -11) erg/sq cm s in the 15-150 keV band), more than an order of magnitude better than HEAO A-4. A flexible data and operations system will allow rapid follow-up observations of all types of high-energy transients. with rapid data downlink and uplink available through the NASA TDRSS system. Swift transient data will be rapidly distributed to the astronomical community and all interested observers are encouraged to participate in follow-up measurements. A Guest Investigator program for the mission will provide funding for community involvement. Innovations from the Swift program applicable to the future include: 1) a large-area gamma-ray detector us- ing the new CdZnTe detectors; 2) an autonomous rapid slewing spacecraft; 3) a multiwavelength payload combining optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray instruments; 4) an observing program coordinated with other ground-based and space-based observatories; and 5) immediate multiwavelength data flow to the community. The mission is currently funded for 2 years of operations and the spacecraft will have a lifetime to orbital decay of approx. 8 years.

The XMM-Newton X-ray observatory took part in the multi-wavelength observing campaign of the massive, evolved star Eta Carinae in 2003 during its recent X-ray minimum in June 2003. This paper reports on the first results of these observations, which were performed (1) before the minimum (five times in January, 2003), (2) near the X-ray maximum just before the minimum (two times in June) and (3) during the minimum (four times in July-August). Hard X-ray emission from the point source of Eta Carinae was detected even during the minimum. The observed flux above 3 keV was approx. 3x10(exp -12) ergs cm(exp -2)/s, which is about one percent of the flux before the minimum. Light curves from the individual observations show no time variability on the scale of a few kilo-seconds. Changes in the spectral shape occurred, but these changes were smaller than expected if the minimum is produced solely by an increase of hydrogen column density. Fits of the hard X-Ray source by an absorbed 1T model show a constant plasma temperature at around 5 keV and an increase of column density from 5x10(exp 22) cm(exp -2) to 2x10(exp 23) cm(exp -2). The spectra below 6 keV significantly deviate from the models that fit the higher energy emission. The X-ray minimum seems to be dominated by an apparent decrease of the emission measure, suggesting that the brightest part of the X-ray emitting region is completely obscured during the minimum in the form of an eclipse. Partial covering plasma emission models might be considered for the spectral variation. The spectra also showed strong iron K line emission from both hot and cold gases, and weak line emission from Ni, Ca, Ar, S and Si.

Following a description of the science drive which originated the Swift Mission, this is US NASA MIDEX Mission with the collaboration of Italy and the UK, we will describe the status of the hardware and the observing strategy. The telemetry is carried out via the TDRSS satellite for those communications that need immediate response. The data transfer and the scheduled uploading of routine commands will be done through the ASI Malindi station in Kenia. Both in the US and in Europe a large effort will be done to follow the bursts with the maximum of efficiency and as soon as possible after the alert. We will describe how the ESO VLT telescopes are able to respond to the alert. To address the problematic of the dark bursts and to immediately follow up all of the bursts also in the Near Infrared we designed and built a 60 cm NIR Robotic telescope, REM, to be located on the ESO ground at Cerro La Silla. The instrumentation includes also a low dispersion spectrograph with the capability of multi wavelength optical photometry.
