Abstract

This thesis reviews in detail the powers, practice and effectiveness of the United Nations in the maintenance of international peace and security since its inception over forty years ago. The work not only contains an examination of the constitutional powers of the the two United Nations' organs responsible for this area - the Security Council and the General Assembly - and of how these powers have been developed in practice, but also of the significant political factors operating to limit the ambit and effectiveness of those powers. To this end Part 1 of the work examines the Security Council, Part 2 the General Assembly, whilst Part 3 contains a study of the peacekeeping function of the United Nations. Each Part is roughly divided into an analysis in terms of political factors, constitutional considerations and finally effectiveness. Peacekeeping is examined separately because it raises a host of particular problems - both constitutional and political – which would be difficult to encompass in the other two Parts. Generally, each chapter contains a conclusion at which point the various threads are drawn together not only to produce a summary but also to provide guidance as to the future use and development of the powers possessed by the United Nations in this field.

Abstract

A three-dimensional transient heat, mass, and momentum transfer model was developed to predict temperatures and moisture contents of canola stored inside silo bags under Canadian Prairie conditions. The developed model calculated the condensation and production of water and heat generated by the respiration of microorganisms inside silo bags. This model was coupled with the soil temperature model developed in part I. These developed models were validated using weather data as input and measured temperatures and moisture contents inside silo bags filled with canola at 9.1%, 10.5%, or 14.4% initial moisture content (MC). The developed models had a poor prediction of the temperature and moisture content of the 14.4% MC canola because the canola seeds spoiled and clumped together in less than four months. The developed models could explain more than 90% of the measured temperatures inside the silo bags filled with 10.5% MC canola without underestimation or overestimation. The average absolute difference was less than 1.9°C ±0.1°C and 0.7°C ±0.0°C inside silo bags with 9.1% and 10.5% initial MC, respectively. The developed models could explain more than 94% of the measured moisture contents of canola stored inside the silo bags with ≤10.5% initial MC. The average absolute difference between measured and predicted moisture contents of canola was ≤0.4% ±0.0% inside the silo bags filled with 9.1% and 10.5% MC canola. Simulation results showed that condensation on the canola seeds mostly occurred at the boundary of silo bags, and canola inside hot spots might produce ≥2.5 fold of heat production, which was measured under small-scale laboratory conditions. Abstract

Silo bags have been used by Canadian farmers in the last few years to temporarily store cereal grains, pulses, and oilseeds for up to one year. It is difficult to install temperature and moisture cables inside silo bags or conduct sampling because any cutting of the silo bag damages its hermeticity. Mathematical models could be used to predict spoilage during storage, and the accuracy of mathematical models is influenced by soil temperature. In this study, soil temperature models were developed based on the energy balance on the surface of the ground and heat conduction equations (HCE). The surface of the ground was covered with snow during winter and with vegetation during summer. The developed soil models were coupled with the developed three-dimensional transient heat, mass, and momentum transfer models inside silo bags. The developed models were validated using weather data (solar radiation, temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and snow covering) and temperatures collected inside bulk canola in silo bags with 9.1% and 10.5% moisture contents. The prediction accuracy associated with the HCE models was compared with that associated with Fourier series, which has been used in the literature. The HCE models developed in this study had higher prediction accuracy than the Fourier series. The maximum absolute difference and average absolute difference between the measured and predicted (by the HCE models) canola temperature at 10 cm height of the canola from the bottom of the silo bag were 3.23°C and <1.79°C ±0.04°C, respectively. Abstract

Heat production by 14.0% moisture content (MC) canola seeds was determined at 30°C and 20°C under airtight and non-airtight storage conditions by using a transient method. The 14.0% MC canola seeds were placed inside copper balls (15 cm diameter with 1.5 mm wall thickness). The balls were located at the center of cubic plywood boxes (50 cm long in each inner dimension) which were filled with 8.0% MC canola seeds. The plywood boxes were insulated with Styrofoam (14.5 cm thickness). Thermocouples were installed inside and outside the boxes and balls at 27 locations. The heat production rate was calculated by using finite element, analytical, and Fourier law methods. The heat production rate calculated by the finite element method was the heat production rate of the 14.0% MC canola, while the analytical and Fourier law methods overestimated and underestimated the heat production rate, respectively. The mean heat production rates at 30°C non-airtight, 30°C airtight, and 20°C non-airtight conditions were 0.102 ±0.001, 0.084 ±0.003, and 0.036 ±0.001 W kg-1, respectively. Accumulated heat increased with increase of temperature and decrease of airtightness. The dry mass loss of canola seeds due to respiration of microflora was in accordance with heat production, moisture content increment under airtight condition, and microorganism infestation. Abstract

Seed major and minor axes of three canola varieties with high oil content (45H29 at 8%, 10%, and 12% moisture content wet basis, and Invigor 5440 and Nex4 105 at 10% moisture content) and one low-oil canola variety (5525 Clearfield at 10% moisture content) were measured at room temperature. Bulk density, angles of repose, and coefficients of friction against four structural surfaces were determined for two varieties of high-oil canola (Invigor 5440 and Nex4 105) and for mixtures of them (at ratios of 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1) at four moisture contents (8%, 10%, 12%, and 14%). The same physical properties were determined for the third high-oil canola (45H29) and for the low-oil canola (5525 Clearfield) at three moisture contents (8%, 10%, and 12%). The four structural surfaces were galvanized steel, plywood, wood-floated concrete, and steel-troweled concrete. Major and minor axes of 45H29 increased with increasing moisture content. Oil content did not affect the axes of canola seeds. Bulk densities were significantly different between Invigor 5440 and Nex4 105. Mixtures of the high-oil canola varieties had bulk density values between those of the canola varieties that were used in the mixtures. Bulk density decreased with increasing oil content. Angles of repose depended more on canola variety and surface properties than on oil content. The coefficient of friction against structural surfaces was not significantly affected by moisture content but was affected by oil content.
