The Flight Dynamics Laboratory is engaged in compressible boundary layer research in our M=3 and M=6 High Reynolds Number Facilities (HRNF). A good direct reading skin friction balance is required to accurately define the shearing stresses on smooth and rough surfaces and for development of indirect measurement techniques.

This Appendix I is intended to provide a broad history of the Columbia-North Pacific Region Comprehensive Framework Study. The first section, covering authorization, purpose, and scope, defines the study area and the level of detail obtained and outlines the broad objectives of the study. Following this is a listing and brief description of previous studies of a comprehensive nature covering major areas or basins within the region. The third section describes the organization established for conduct of the study and how it was funded and administered. Special attention is given to the coordination of the study necessitated by the numerous State and Federal agencies participating. All of the cooperating agencies are identified. The appendix concludes with a section describing some of the public information activities concerning the study which have been engaged in by the Pacific Northwest River Basins Commission and by study participants., Appendix 1 to Main Report, ADA036545. The memorandum summarizes the available information on the compatibility of liquid rocket propellants with prominent materials of construction. Fuels and oxidizers of current interest are discussed. The corrosion data which are presented will apply to storing, handling, and control equipment outside of missiles and to missile components excluding combustion chamber. The compatibility of materials with reaction products in combustion chambers, nozzles, etc., is not considered. Included in the summary are data for many nonmetallic materials. The memorandum is subdivided into sections according to the propellant. Each material of construction is rated for a given medium as belonging to one of four classes, based primarily upon corrosion resistance. Consideration also is given to such factors as catalytic decomposition and sensitivity to impact., Available copy will not permit fully legible reproduction. The purpose of Appendix II, The Region, is to give an overall view of the history of the Columbia-North Pacific Region and describe its geology, climate, natural resources, and population characteristics. A description is also provided for each of the twelve subregions into which the region has been divided for study purposes. This description covers two types of information: general information that could be fitted into any one of several appendices, and additional detail needed to more fully describe the region. The coverage in this appendix is not intended to be an all inclusive regional description. Details concerning the functional aspects of water use, as well as detailed inventory information, have been fully and adequately covered in the several appendices listed inside the front cover of this volume. The research described in this report continued the investigation of magnesium- lithium alloys conducted during 1957-1959 for the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center. The final report of the earlier research received wide distribution and stimulated the present interest in the use of magnesium-lithium alloys for missile and space hardware components. The present contract was initiated in June, 1962, and terminated in January, 1963.
