Search

Studying outflows is important as they may significantly contribute to angular momentum removal from the star/disk system, affecting disk evolution and planet formation. To investigate the different outflow components; the collimated jet, wide-angled molecular outflow, and outflow cavity, of the Class I HH 46/47 outflow system. We focus on their kinematics. We present Near Infrared (NIR) K-band integral field observations of the blue-shifted HH 46/47 outflow base obtained using VLT/SINFONI with an angular resolution of 0".81. Our analysis focuses on [Fe II], H2 1-0 S(1), and, Br-gamma emission. We employ a wavelength recalibration technique based on OH telluric lines to probe the kinematics of the wide-angled flow with an accuracy of 1 km/s - 3 km/s. A velocity gradient of 10 km/s transverse to the outflow direction is confirmed in the wide-angled H2 outflow cavity. The H2 cavity peaks at radial velocities of -15 km/s to -30 km/s, and the atomic jet at v = -210 km/s. The outflow exhibits a layered structure; the high-velocity [Fe II] and Br-gamma jet is surrounded by a wide-angled H2 outflow cavity, which is in turn nested within the continuum emission and CO molecular outflow. The continuum emission and H2 outflow cavity are asymmetric with respect to the jet axis. We propose that the origin of the asymmetries and the velocity gradient detected in the wide-angled H2 cavity, is due to a wide-angled outflow or successive jet bowshocks expanding into an inhomogeneous ambient medium, or the presence of a secondary outflow. We eliminate outflow rotation as an exclusive origin of this velocity gradient due to large specific angular momenta values, J(r)= 3000 - 4000 km/s au calculated from 1" to 2" along the outflow. We present the first results of the JWST program PROJECT-J (PROtostellar JEts Cradle Tested with JWST ), designed to study the Class I source HH46 IRS and its outflow through NIRSpec and MIRI spectroscopy (1.66 to 28 micron). The data provide line-images (~ 6.6" in length with NIRSpec, and up to 20" with MIRI) revealing unprecedented details within the jet, the molecular outflow and the cavity. We detect, for the first time, the red-shifted jet within ~ 90 au from the source. Dozens of shock-excited forbidden lines are observed, including highly ionized species such as [Ne III] 15.5 micron, suggesting that the gas is excited by high velocity (> 80 km/s) shocks in a relatively high density medium. Images of H2 lines at different excitations outline a complex molecular flow, where a bright cavity, molecular shells, and a jet-driven bow-shock interact with and are shaped by the ambient conditions. Additional NIRCam 2 micron images resolve the HH46 IRS ~ 110 au binary system and suggest that the large asymmetries observed between the jet and the H2 wide angle emission could be due to two separate outflows being driven by the two sources. The spectra of the unresolved binary show deep ice bands and plenty of gaseous lines in absorption, likely originating in a cold envelope or disk. In this work we present the highest spatial and spectral resolution integral field observations to date of the bipolar jet from the Orion proplyd 244-440 using MUSE NFM) observations on the VLT. We observed a previously unreported chain of six distinct knots in a roughly S-shaped pattern, and by comparing them with HST images we estimated proper motions in the redshifted knots of 9.5 mas yr$^{-1}$ with an inclination angle of $73^{\circ}$, though these quantities could not be measured for the blueshifted lobe. Analysis of the [FeII] and [NiII] lines suggests jet densities on the order of $\sim 10^5$ cm$^{-3}$. We propose that the observed S-shaped morphology originates from a jet launched by a smaller source with $M_\star < 0.2$ M$_{\odot}$ in orbital motion around a larger companion of $M_\star \simeq 0.5$ M$_{\odot}$ at a separation of 30-40 au. The measured luminosities of the knots using the [OI]$\lambda6300$ and [SII]$\lambda6731$ lines were used to estimate a lower limit to the mass-loss rate in the jet of $1.3 \times 10^{-11}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ and an upper limit of $10^{-9}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, which is typical for low-mass driving sources. While the brightness asymmetry between the redshifted and blueshifted lobes is consistent with external irradiation, further analysis of the [NiII] and [FeII] lines suggests that photoionization of the jet is not likely to be a dominant factor, and that the emission is dominated by collisional excitation. The dynamical age of the jet compared to the anticipated survival time of the proplyd demonstrates that photoevaporation of the proplyd occurred prior to jet launching, and that this is still an active source. These two points suggest that the envelope of the proplyd may shield the jet from the majority of external radiation, and that photoionization of the proplyd does not appear to impact the ability of a star to launch a jet., Comment: 30 pages, 20 figures

(Pre-)transitional disks show gaps and cavities that can be related with on-going planet formation. According to theory, young embedded planets can accrete material from the circumplanetary and circumstellar disks, so that they could be detected in accretion tracers, like the H$_{\alpha}$ emission line. In this work, we present spectral angular differential imaging AO-assisted observations of five (pre-)transitional disks obtained with SPHERE/ZIMPOL at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). They were obtained in the H$_{\alpha}$ line and the adjacent continuum. We have combined spectral and angular differential imaging techniques to increase the contrast in the innermost regions close to the star, and search for the signature of young accreting protoplanets. As a result, the reduced images do not show any clear H$_{\alpha}$ point source around any of the targets. We report faint H$_{\alpha}$ emissions around TW Hya and HD163296: while the former is most probably an artifact related with a spike, the nature of the latter remains unclear. The spectral and angular differential images yield contrasts of 6--8 magnitudes at separations of $\sim$ 100 mas from the central stars, except in the case of LkCa15, with values of $\sim$3 mag. We have estimated upper limits to the accretion luminosity of potential protoplanets, obtaining that planetary models provide an average value of $L_{\rm acc} \sim 10^{-4}$ $L_{\odot}$ at 200 mas, which is $\sim$2 orders of magnitude higher than the $L_{\rm acc}$ estimated from the extrapolation of the $L_{H_{\alpha}}$ - $L_{acc}$ stellar relationship. HD163296 is a Herbig Ae star which drives a bipolar knotty jet with a total length of ~6000au. Strong evidence exists that the disk of HD163296 harbors planets. Studies have shown that the presence of companions around jet-driving stars could affect the morphology of the jets. This includes a `wiggling' of the jet axis and a periodicity in the positions of the jet knots. In this study we investigate the morphology (including the jet width and axis position) and proper motions of the HD163296 jets, and use our results to better understand the whole system.This study is based on optical integral-field spectroscopy observations obtained with VLT/MUSE in 2017. Using spectro-images and position velocity diagrams extracted from the MUSE data cube, we investigated the number and positions of the jet knots. A comparison was made to X-Shooter data collected in 2012 and the knot proper motions were estimated. The jet width and jet axis position with distance from the star were studied from the extracted spectro-images. We observe the merging of knots and identify two previously undetected knots. Measurements of the jet axis position reveal a similar pattern of deviation in all forbidden emission lines along the first 20 arc seconds of the jets. This result is interpreted as being due to asymmetric shocks and not due to a wiggling of the jet axis. The number of new knots detected and their positions challenge the 16-year knot ejection periodicity proposed in prior studies, arguing for a more complicated jet system than was previously assumed. We use the non-detection of a jet axis wiggling to rule out companions with a mass $>$0.1~\Msun\ and orbits between 1~au and 35~au. Any object inferred at these distances using other methods must be a brown dwarf or planet, otherwise it would have impacted the jet axis position. Both the precession and orbital motion scenarios are considered.

Context: Th 28 is a Classical T Tauri star in the Lupus 3 cloud which drives an extended bipolar jet. Previous studies of the inner jet identified signatures of rotation around the outflow axis, a key result for theories of jet launching. Thus this is an important source in which to investigate the poorly understood jet launching mechanism. We investigate the morphology and kinematics of the Th 28 micro-jets with the aim of characterizing their structure and outflow activity, using optical integral-field spectroscopy observations obtained with VLT/MUSE. We use spectro-imaging and position-velocity maps to investigate the kinematic and morphological features of the jet, and obtain a catalogue of emission lines in which the jet is visible. A Lucy-Richardson deconvolution procedure is used to differentiate the structure of the inner micro-jet region. Spatial profiles extracted perpendicular to the jet axis are fitted to investigate the jet width, opening angle and the evolution of the jet axis. We confirm the previously identified knot HHW$_{2}$ within the red-shifted jet and identify three additional knots in each lobe for the first time. We also find [O III]$\lambda$5007 emission from the blue-shifted micro-jet including the knot closest to the star. Proper motions for the innermost knots on each side are estimated and we show that new knots are ejected on an approximate timescale of 10-15 years. The jet axis centroids show a point-symmetric wiggle within the inner portion of both micro-jets indicating precession. We use the jet shape to measure a precession period of 8 years, with a half-opening angle < 0.6$^{\circ}$. This may provide an alternative explanation for the rotation signatures previously reported. Spectro-astrometry is used to investigate the low velocity component (LVC) of the optical forbidden emission from the T Tauri stars RU Lupi and AS 205 N. Both stars also have high velocity forbidden emission (HVC) which is tracing a jet. For AS 205 N, analysis reveals a complicated outflow system. For RU Lupi, the [O I] 6300 and [S II] 6716, 6731 LV narrow component (NC) is offset along the same position angle (PA) as the HVC but with a different velocity gradient than the jet, in that displacement from the stellar position along the rotation axis is decreasing with increasing velocity. From the LVC NC PA and velocity gradient, it is inferred that the NC is tracing a wide angled MHD disk wind. A photoevaporative wind is ruled out. This is supported by a comparison with a previous spectro-astrometric study of the CO fundamental line. The decrease in offset with increasing velocity is interpreted as tracing an increase in the height of the wind with increasing disk radius. This is one of the first measurements of the spatial extent of the forbidden emission line LVC NC (~ 40 au, 8 au for RU~Lupi in the [S II] 6731 and [O I] 6300 lines) and the first direct confirmation that the LVC narrow component can trace an MHD disk wind., Comment: Accepted by ApJ, 16 pages, 11 figures

Young accreting stars drive outflows that collimate into jets, which can be seen hundreds of au from their driving sources. Accretion and outflow activity cease with system age, and it is believed that magneto-centrifugally launched disk winds are critical agents in regulating accretion through the protoplanetary disk. Protostellar jets are well studied in classical T~Tauri stars ($M_\star\lesssim2\,M_\odot$), while few nearby ($d\lesssim150\,$pc) intermediate-mass stars ($M_\star=2-10\,M_\odot$), known as Herbig Ae/Be stars, have detected jets. We report VLT/MUSE observations of the Herbig~Ae/Be star HD~100546 and the discovery of a protostellar jet. The jet is similar in appearance to jets driven by low-mass stars and compares well with the jet of HD~163296, the only other known optical jet from a nearby Herbig~Ae/Be star. We derive a (one-sided) mass-loss rate in the jet of $\log \dot{M}_{jet} \sim -9.5$ (in $M_\odot$\,yr$^{-1}$) and a ratio of outflow to accretion of roughly $3\times10^{-3}$, which is lower than that of CTTS jets. The discovery of the HD~100546 jet is particularly interesting because the protoplanetary disk around HD~100546 shows a large radial gap, spiral structure, and might host a protoplanetary system. A bar-like structure previously seen in H$\alpha$ with VLT/SPHERE shares the jet position angle, likely represents the base of the jet, and suggests a jet-launching region within about 2\,au. MWC758 is a young star surrounded by a transitional disk. Recently, a protoplanet candidate has been detected around MWC758 through high-resolution $L'$-band observations. The candidate is located inside the disk cavity at a separation of $\sim$111 mas from the central star, and at an average position angle of $\sim$165.5 degrees. We have performed simultaneous adaptive optics observations of MWC758 in the H$_{\alpha}$ line and the adjacent continuum using SPHERE/ZIMPOL at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). We aim at detecting accreting protoplanet candidates through spectral angular differential imaging observations. The data analysis does not reveal any H$_{\alpha}$ signal around the target. The derived contrast curve in the B_Ha filter allows us to derive a 5$\sigma$ upper limit of $\sim$7.6 mag at 111 mas, the separation of the previously detected planet candidate. This contrast translates into a H$_{\alpha}$ line luminosity of $L_{\rm H_{\alpha}}\lesssim$ 5$\times$10$^{-5}$ $L_{\odot}$ at 111 mas, and an accretion luminosity of $L_{acc} <$3.7$\times$10$^{-4}\,L_{\odot}$. For the predicted mass range of MWC758b, 0.5-5 $M_{\rm Jup}$, this implies accretion rates of $\dot M \lesssim$ 3.4$\times$(10$^{-8}$-10$^{-9})\,M_{\odot}/yr$, for an average planet radius of 1.1 $R_{\rm Jup}$. Therefore, our estimates are consistent with the predictions of accreting circumplanetary accretion models for $R_{\rm in} = 1 R_{\rm Jup}$. In any case, the non-detection of any H$_{\alpha}$ emitting source in the ZIMPOL images does not allow us to unveil the true nature of the $L'$ detected source., Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in A&A letters

We report the discovery of a new Herbig-Haro jet, HH 1165, in SOAR narrow-band imaging of the vicinity of the sigma Orionis cluster. HH 1165 shows a spectacular extended and collimated spatial structure, with a projected length of 0.26 pc, a bent C-shaped morphology, multiple knots, and fragmented bow-shocks at the apparent ends of the flow. The Halpha image shows a bright halo with a clumpy distribution of material seen around the driving source, and curved reflection nebulosity tracing the outflow cavities. The driving source of HH 1165 is a Class I proto-brown dwarf, Mayrit 1701117 (M1701117), with a total (dust+gas) mass of ~36 MJup and a bolometric luminosity of ~0.1 Lsun. High-resolution VLT/UVES spectra of M1701117 show a wealth of emission lines indicative of strong outflow and accretion activity. SOAR/Goodman low-resolution spectra along the jet axis show an asymmetrical morphology for HH 1165. We find a puzzling picture wherein the north-west part exhibits a classical HH jet running into a pre-dominantly neutral medium, while the southern part resembles an externally irradiated jet. The C-shaped bending in HH 1165 may be produced by the combined effects from the massive stars in the ionization front to the east, the sigma Orionis core to the west, and the close proximity to the B2-type star HR 1950. HH 1165 shows all of the signatures to be considered as a scaled-down version of parsec-length HH jets, and can be termed as the first sub-stellar analog of a protostellar HH jet system., Comment: Accepted in ApJ

Be/X-ray binaries are the most populous class of High Mass X-ray Binaries. Their X-ray duty cycle is tightly related to the optical companion wind activity, which in turn can be studied through optical spectroscopical dedicated observations. We study optical spectral features of the Be circumstellar disk to test their long-term variability and their relation with the X-ray activity. Special attention has been given to the H$\alpha$ emission line, that is one of the best tracers of the disk conditions. We obtained optical broadband medium resolution spectra from a dedicated campaign with the Anglo-Australian Telescope and the Southern African Large Telescope in 2014-2015. Data span over one entire binary orbit, and cover both X-ray quiescent and moderately active periods. We used Balmer emission lines to follow the evolution of the circumstellar disk. We observe prominent spectral features, like double-peaked H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ emission lines. The H$\alpha$ V/R ratio significantly changes over a time scale of about one year. Our observations are consistent with a system observed at a large inclination angle ($i\gtrsim60^{\circ}$). The derived circumstellar disk size shows that the disk evolves from a configuration that prevents accretion onto the neutron star, to one that allows only moderate accretion. This is in agreement with the contemporary observed X-ray activity. Our results are interpreted within the context of inefficient tidal truncation of the circumstellar disk, as expected for this source's binary configuration. We derived the H$\beta$-emitting region size, which results about half of the corresponding H$\alpha$-emitting disk, and constrain the luminosity class of V850 Cen as III-V, consistent with the previously proposed class.}, Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication on A&A

Z CMa is a complex pre-main sequence binary with a current separation of 100 mas, known to consist of an FU Orionis star (SE component) and an embedded Herbig Be star (NW component). Immediately when the late-2008 outburst of Z CMa was announced to the community, we initiated a high angular resolution imaging campaign with VLT/NaCo, Keck/NIRC2, VLT/SINFONI, and Keck/OSIRIS which aimed at characterizing the outburst of both components of the system in the near-infrared. We confirm that the NW star dominates the system flux in the 1.1-3.8 microns range and is responsible for the photometric outburst. We extract the first medium-resolution (R=2000-4000) near-infrared (1.1-2.4 microns) spectra of the individual components during and after the outburst. The SE component has a spectrum typical of FU Orionis objects. The NW component spectrum is characteristic of embedded outbursting protostars and EX Or objects. It displays numerous emission lines during the outburst whose intensity correlates with the system activity. In particular, we find a correlation between the Brackett gamma equivalent width and the system brightness. The bluing of the continuum of the NW component along with the absolute flux and color-variation of the system during the outburst suggests that the outburst was caused by a complex interplay between a variation of the extinction in the line of sight of the NW component on one hand, and the emission of shocked regions close to the NW component on the other. We confirm the recently reported wiggling of the SE component jet from [Fe II] line emission. We find a point-like structure associated with a peak emission at 2.098 microns coincidental with the clump or arm seen in broadband polarization differential imaging as well as additional diffuse emission along a PA=214 degrees. We have identified a new externally irradiated Herbig-Haro (HH) jet, HH 1158, within ~2 pc of the massive OB type stars in the sigma Orionis cluster. At an Lbol ~ 0.1 Lsun, HH 1158 is the lowest luminosity irradiated HH jet identified to date in any cluster. Results from the analysis of high-resolution optical spectra indicate asymmetries in the brightness, morphology, electron density, velocity, and the mass outflow rates for the blue and red-shifted lobes. We constrain the position angle of the HH 1158 jet at 102+/-5 degree. The mass outflow rate and the mean accretion rate for HH 1158 using multiple diagnostics are estimated to be (5.2 +/- 2.6) x 10^(-10) Msun/yr and (3.0 +/- 1.0) x 10^(-10) Msun/yr, respectively. The properties for HH 1158 are notably similar to the externally irradiated HH 444 -- HH 447 jets previously identified in sigma Orionis. In particular, the morphology is such that the weaker jet beam is tilted towards the massive stars, indicating a higher extent of photo-evaporation. The high value for the Halpha/[SII] ratio is also consistent with the ratios measured in other irradiated jets, including HH 444 -- HH 447. The presence of an extended collimated jet that is bipolar and the evidence of shocked emission knots make HH 1158 the first unique case of irradiated HH jets at the very low-luminosity end, and provides an opportunity to learn the physical properties of very faint HH jet sources., Comment: Accepted in ApJ Letters

Aims. We present an X-ray study of the supernova remnant SNR J0533-7202 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and determine its physical characteristics based on its X-ray emission. Methods. We observed SNR J0533-7202 with XMM-Newton (flare-filtered exposure times of 18 ks EPIC-pn and 31 ks EPIC-MOS1/MOS2). We produced X-ray images of the SNR, performed an X-ray spectral analysis, and compared the results to multi-wavelength studies. Results. The distribution of X-ray emission is highly non-uniform, with the south-west region brighter than the north-east. The X-ray emission is correlated with the radio emission from the remnant. We determine that this morphology is likely due to the SNR expanding into a non-uniform ambient medium and not an absorption effect. We estimate the size to be 53.9 (\pm 3.4) x 43.6 (\pm 3.4) pc, with the major axis rotated ~64 degrees east of north. We find no spectral signatures of ejecta and infer that the X-ray plasma is dominated by swept-up interstellar medium. Using the spectral fit results and the Sedov self-similar solution, we estimate an age of ~17-27 kyr, with an initial explosion energy of (0.09-0.83) x 10^51 erg. We detected an X-ray source located near the centre of the remnant, namely XMMU J053348.2-720233. The source type could not be conclusively determined due to the lack of a multi-wavelength counterpart and low X-ray counts. We find that it is likely either a background active galactic nucleus or a low-mass X-ray binary in the LMC. Conclusions. We detected bright thermal X-ray emission from SNR J0533-7202 and determined that the remnant is in the Sedov phase of its evolution. The lack of ejecta emission prohibits us from typing the remnant with the X-ray data. Therefore, the likely Type Ia classification based on the local stellar population and star formation history reported in the literature cannot be improved upon., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Planet formation is one explanation for the partial clearing of dust observed in the disks of some T Tauri stars. Indeed studies using state-of-the-art high angular resolution techniques have very recently begun to observe planetary companions in these so-called transitional disks. The goal of this work is to use spectra of the transitional disk object LkCa 15 obtained with X-Shooter on the Very Large Telescope to investigate the possibility of using spectro-astrometry to detect planetary companions to T Tauri stars. It is argued that an accreting planet should contribute to the total emission of accretion tracers such as H$\alpha$ and therefore planetary companions could be detected with spectro-astrometry in the same way as it has been used to detect stellar companions to young stars. A probable planetary-mass companion was recently detected in the disk of LkCa 15. Therefore, it is an ideal target for this pilot study. We studied several key accretion lines in the wavelength range 300 nm to 2.2 $\mu$m with spectro-astrometry. While no spectro-astrometric signal is measured for any emission lines the accuracy achieved in the technique is used to place an upper limit on the contribution of the planet to the flux of the H$\alpha$, Pa$\gamma$, and Pa$\beta$ lines. The derived upper limits on the flux allows an upper limit of the mass accretion rate, log($\dot{M}_{acc}$) = -8.9 to -9.3 for the mass of the companion between 6 M$_{Jup}$ and 15 M$_{Jup}$, respectively, to be estimated (with some assumptions)., Comment: Accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present an optical through sub-millimetre multi-wavelength study of two very low-luminosity Class I/Flat systems, Mayrit 1701117 and Mayrit 1082188, in the sigma Orionis cluster. We performed moderate resolution (R ~ 1000) optical (~0.4-0.9mu) spectroscopy with the TWIN spectrograph at the Calar Alto 3.5-m telescope. The spectra for both sources show prominent emission in accretion- and outflow-associated lines. The mean accretion rate measured from multiple line diagnostics is 6.4x10^{-10} Msun/yr for Mayrit 1701117, and 2.5x10^{-10} Msun/yr for Mayrit 1082188. The outflow mass loss rates for the two systems are similar and estimated to be ~1x10^{-9} Msun/yr. The activity rates are within the range observed for low-mass Class I protostars. We obtained sub-millimetre continuum observations with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA-2) bolometer at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. Both objects are detected at a >5-sigma level in the SCUBA-2 850mu band. The bolometric luminosity of the targets as measured from the observed spectral energy distribution over ~0.8-850mu is 0.18+/-0.04 Lsun for Mayrit 1701117, and 0.16+/-0.03 Lsun for Mayrit 1082188, and is in the very low-mass range. The total dust+gas mass derived from sub-millimetre fluxes is ~36 M_Jup and ~22 M_Jup for Mayrit 1701117 and Mayrit 1082188, respectively. There is the possibility that some of the envelope material might be dissipated by the strong outflows driven by these sources, resulting in a final mass of the system close to or below the sub-stellar limit., Comment: Accepted in MNRAS

As the number of observed brown dwarf outflows is growing it is important to investigate how these outflows compare to the well studied jets from young stellar objects. A key point of comparison is the relationship between outflow and accretion activity and in particular the ratio between the mass outflow and accretion rates ($\dot{M}_{out}$/$\dot{M}_{acc}$). The brown dwarf candidate ISO-ChaI 217 was discovered by our group, as part of a spectro-astrometric study of brown dwarfs, to be driving an asymmetric outflow with the blue-shifted lobe having a position angle of $\sim$ 20$^{\circ}$. The aim here is to further investigate the properties of ISO-ChaI 217, the morphology and kinematics of its outflow, and to better constrain ($\dot{M}_{out}$/$\dot{M}_{acc}$). The outflow is spatially resolved in the $[SII]\lambda \lambda 6716,6731$ lines and is detected out to $\sim$ 1\farcs6 in the blue-shifted lobe and ~ 1" in the red-shifted lobe. The asymmetry between the two lobes is confirmed although the velocity asymmetry is less pronounced with respect to our previous study. Using thirteen different accretion tracers we measure log($\dot{M}_{acc}$) [M$_{sun}$/yr]= -10.6 $\pm$ 0.4. As it was not possible to measure the effect of extinction on the ISO-ChaI 217 outflow $\dot{M}_{out}$ was derived for a range of values of A$_{v}$, up to a value of A$_{v}$ = 2.5 mag estimated for the source extinction. The logarithm of the mass outflow ($\dot{M}_{out}$) was estimated in the range -11.7 to -11.1 for both jets combined. Thus $\dot{M}_{out}$/$\dot{M}_{acc}$ [\Msun/yr] lies below the maximum value predicted by magneto-centrifugal jet launching models. Finally, both model fitting of the Balmer decrements and spectro-astrometric analysis of the H$\alpha$ line show that the bulk of the H I emission comes from the accretion flow., Comment: accepted by Astronomy & Astrophysics

The protostellar outflow mechanism operates for a significant fraction of the pre-main sequence phase of a solar mass star and is thought to have a key role in star and perhaps even planet formation. This energetic mechanism manifests itself in several different forms and on many scales. Thus outflow activity can be probed in numerous different regimes from radio to X-ray wavelengths. Recent discoveries have shown that it is not only solar mass stars that launch outflows during their formation but also the sub-stellar brown dwarfs. In this article what is currently known about jets from young stars is summarised, including an outline of why it is important to study jets. The second part of this article is dedicated to jets from young brown dwarfs. While only a small number of brown dwarf outflows have been investigated to date, interesting properties have been observed. In this paper a comprehensive analysis of VLT / X-Shooter observations of two jet systems, namely ESO-H$\alpha$ 574 a K8 classical T Tauri star and Par-Lup 3-4 a very low mass (0.13~\Msun) M5 star, is presented. Both stars are known to have near-edge on accretion disks. A summary of these first X-shooter observations of jets was given in a 2011 letter. The new results outlined here include flux tables of identified emission lines, information on the morphology, kinematics and physical conditions of both jets and, updated estimates of $\dot{M}_{out}$ / $\dot{M}_{acc}$. Asymmetries in the \eso flow are investigated while the \para jet is much more symmetric. The density, temperature, and therefore origin of the gas traced by the Balmer lines are investigated from the Balmer decrements and results suggest an origin in a jet for \eso while for \para the temperature and density are consistent with an accretion flow. $\dot{M}_{acc}$ is estimated from the luminosity of various accretion tracers. For both targets, new luminosity relationships and a re-evaluation of the effect of reddening and grey extinction (due to the edge-on disks) allows for substantial improvements on previous estimates of $\dot{M}_{acc}$. It is found that log($\dot{M}_{acc}$) = -9.15 $\pm$ 0.45~\Msun yr$^{-1}$ and -9.30 $\pm$ 0.27~\Msun yr$^{-1}$ for \eso and \para respectively. Additionally, the physical conditions in the jets (electron density, electron temperature, and ionisation) are probed using various line ratios and compared with previous determinations from iron lines. The results are combined with the luminosity of the [SII]$\lambda$6731 line to derive $\dot{M}_{out}$ through a calculation of the gas emissivity based on a 5-level atom model., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, Accepted by A&A

We investigate the diagnostic capabilities of the iron lines for tracing the physical conditions of the shock-excited gas in jets driven by pre-main sequence stars. We have analyzed the 300-2500 nm X-shooter spectra of two jets driven by the pre-main sequence stars ESO-Halpha 574 and Par-Lup 3-4. Both spectra are very rich in [FeII] lines over the whole spectral range; in addition, lines from [FeIII] are detected in the ESO-H\alpha 574 spectrum. NLTE codes along with codes for the ionization equilibrium are used to derive the gas excitation conditions of electron temperature and density, and fractional ionization. The iron gas-phase abundance is provided by comparing the iron lines emissivity with that of [OI] 630 nm. The [FeII] lines indicate ESO-Halpha 574 jet is, on average, colder (T_e = 9000 K), less dense (n_e = 2 10^4 cm^-3) and more ionized (x_e = 0.7) than the Par-Lup 3-4 jet (T_e = 13000 K, n_e = 6 10^4 cm^-3, x_e < 0.4), even if the existence of a higher density component (n_e = 2 10^5 cm^-3) is probed by the [FeIII] and [FeII] ultra-violet lines. Theoretical models suggest that the shock at work in ESO-Halpha 574 is faster and likely more energetic than the Par-Lup 3-4 shock. This latter feature is confirmed by the high percentage of gas-phase iron measured in ESO-Halpha 574 (50-60% of its solar abundance in comparison with less than 30% in Par-Lup 3-4), which testifies that the ESO-Halpha 574 shock is powerful enough to partially destroy the dust present inside the jet. This work demonstrates that a multiline Fe analysis can be effectively used to probe the excitation and ionization conditions of the gas in a jet without any assumption on ionic abundances. We discuss accretion and outflow properties of three very low-mass young stellar objects based on broad-band mid-resolution X-Shooter/VLT spectra. Our targets (FU TauA, 2M 1207-39, and Par-Lup3-4) have spectral types between M5 and M8, ages between 1 Myr and ~10 Myr, and are known to be accreting from previous studies. The final objective of our project is the determination of mass outflow to accretion rate for objects near or within the substellar regime as a probe for the T Tauri phase of brown dwarfs and the investigation of variability in the accretion and outflow processes., Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Proceedings of the conference "Physics at the Magnetospheric Boundary" (Geneva, June 2013)

We report the detection of a molecular outflow driven by the brown dwarf binary FU Tau. Using the IRAM 30 m telescope we observed the $^{12}$CO(2-1) (CO) emission in the vicinity of FU Tau and detected a bipolar outflow by examining the wings of the CO(2-1) line as we moved away from the source position. An integrated map of the wing emission between 3 kms$^{-1}$ and 5 kms$^{-1}$ reveals a blue-shifted lobe at a position of $\sim$ 20 \arcsec\ from the FU Tau system and at a position angle of $\sim$ 20$^{\circ}$. The beam size of the observations is $11\arcsec$\ hence it is not possible to distinguish between the two components of the FU Tau binary. However as optical forbidden emission, a strong tracer of the shocks caused by outflow activity, has been detected in the spectrum of FU Tau A we assume this component to be the driving source of the molecular outflow. We estimate the mass and mass outflow rate of the outflow at 4 $\times$ 10$^{-6}$ \Msun\ and 6 $\times$ 10$^{-10}$ \Msun/yr respectively. These results agree well with previous estimates for BD molecular outflows. FU Tau A is now the third BD found to be associated with molecular outflow activity and this discovery adds to the already extensive list of the interesting properties of FU Tau., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Characterization of the properties of young brown dwarfs are important to constraining the formation of objects at the extreme low-mass end of the IMF. While young brown dwarfs share many properties with solar-mass T Tauri stars, differences may be used as tests of how the physics of accretion/outflow and disk chemistry/dissipation depend on the mass of the central object. This article summarizes the presentations and discussions during the splinter session on 'Disks, accretion and outflows of brown dwarfs' held at the CoolStars17 conference in Barcelona in June 2012. Accretion is a fundamental process in star formation. Although the time evolution of accretion remains a matter of debate, observations and modelling studies suggest that episodic outbursts of strong accretion may dominate the formation of the protostar. Observing young stellar objects during these elevated accretion states is crucial to understanding the origin of unsteady accretion. ZCMa is a pre-main-sequence binary system composed of an embedded Herbig Be star, undergoing photometric outbursts, and a FU Orionis star. The Herbig Be component recently underwent its largest optical photometric outburst detected so far. We aim to constrain the origin of this outburst by studying the emission region of the HI Brackett gamma line, a powerful tracer of accretion/ejection processes on the AU-scale in young stars. Using the AMBER/VLTI instrument at spectral resolutions of 1500 and 12 000, we performed spatially and spectrally resolved interferometric observations of the hot gas emitting across the Brackett gamma emission line, during and after the outburst. From the visibilities and differential phases, we derive characteristic sizes for the Brackett gamma emission and spectro-astrometric measurements across the line, with respect to the continuum. We find that the line profile, the astrometric signal, and the visibilities are inconsistent with the signature of either a Keplerian disk or infall of matter. They are, instead, evidence of a bipolar wind, maybe partly seen through a disk hole inside the dust sublimation radius. The disappearance of the Brackett gamma emission line after the outburst suggests that the outburst is related to a period of strong mass loss rather than a change of the extinction along the line of sight. Based on these conclusions, we speculate that the origin of the outburst is an event of enhanced mass accretion, similar to those occuring in EX Ors and FU Ors., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters

Over the last number of years spectroscopic studies have strongly supported the assertion that protostellar accretion and outflow activity persists to the lowest masses. In this paper we present the results of our latest investigation of brown dwarf (BD) outflow activity and report on the discovery of two new outflows. Here ISO-Oph 32 is shown to drive a blue-shifted outflow with a radial velocity of 10-20 km/s and spectro-astrometric analysis constrains the position angle of this outflow to 240 +/- 7 degrees. The BD candidate ISO-Cha1 217 is found to have a bipolar outflow bright in several key forbidden lines (radial velocity = -20 km/s, +40 km/s) and with a PA of 190-210 degrees. A striking feature of the ISO-Cha1 217 outflow is the strong asymmetry between the red and blue-shifted lobes. This asymmetry is revealed in the relative brightness of the two lobes (red-shifted lobe is brighter), the factor of two difference in radial velocity (the red-shifted lobe is faster) and the difference in the electron density (again higher in the red lobe). Such asymmetries are common in jets from low mass protostars and the observation of a marked asymmetry at such a low mass supports the idea that BD outflow activity is scaled down from low mass protostellar activity. In addition to presenting these new results, a comprehensive comparison is made between BD outflow activity and jets launched by CTTSs. As outflow activity in low mass protostars is strongly connected to ac- cretion it is reasonable to expect accreting brown dwarfs to also be driving out- flows. In the last three years we have searched for brown dwarf outflows using high quality optical spectra obtained with UVES on the VLT and the technique of spectro-astrometry. To date five brown dwarf outflows have been discovered. Here the method is discussed and the results to date outlined.

It is now apparent that classical T Tauri-like outflows commonly accompany the formation of young brown dwarfs. To date two optical outflows have been discovered and results presented in this paper increase this number to three. Using spectro-astrometry the origin of the LS-RCrA 1 forbidden emission lines in a blue-shifted outflow is confirmed. The non-detection of the red-shifted component of the outflow in forbidden lines, along with evidence for some separation between low and high velocity outflow components, do not support the hypothesis that LS-RCrA 1 has an edge-on accretion disk. The key result of this analysis is the discovery of an outflow component to the H-alpha line. The H-alpha line profile has blue and red-shifted features in the wings which spectro-astrometry reveals to also originate in the outflow. The discovery that H-alpha emission in BDs can have a significant contribution from an outflow suggests the use of H-alpha line widths as a proxy of mass accretion in BDs is not clear-cut. This method assumes that any contribution to the H-alpha line flux from a possible outflow is negligible. Finally the fact that the H-alpha line traces both lobes of the outflow while only the blue-shifted lobe is seen in forbidden emission points to the presence of a dust hole in the accretion disk of LS-RCrA 1. The 24 M Jupiter mass brown dwarf 2MASS1207-3932 has for some time been known to show clear signs of classical T Tauri-like accretion. Through analysis of its oxygen forbidden emission we have discovered that it is driving a bipolar outflow. Blue and red-shifted components to the [OI] 6300 forbidden emission line are seen at velocities of - 8 km/s and +4 km/s. Spectro-astrometry recovers the position of both components relative to the BD, at ~ 0.08 arcseconds(in opposing directions). A position velocity diagram of the line region supports the spectro-astrometric results. The H-alpha and HeI 6678 lines were also analysed. These line regions are not offset with respect to the continuum ruling out the presence of spectro-astrometric artifacts and underlining the validity of the [OI] 6300 results. The low radial velocity of the outflow, and relatively large offsets, are consistent with 2MASS1207-3932 having a near edge-on disk, as proposed by Scholz et al. 2MASS1207-3932 is now the smallest mass galactic object known to drive an outflow. The age of the TW Hydrae Association (~ 8 Myr) also makes this one of the oldest objects with a resolved jet. This discovery not only highlights the robustness of the outflow mechanism over an enormous range of masses but also suggests that it may even be feasible for young giant planets with accretion disks to drive outflows., Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures

We present long-slit H- and K-band spectroscopy of the low-mass outflow source SVS 13, obtained with the adaptive-optics assisted imager-spectrometer NACO on the VLT. With a spatial resolution of < 0.25 arcsec and a pixel scale of 0.027 arcsec we precisely establish the relative offsets of H2, [FeII], CO, HI and NaI components from the source continuum. The H2 and [FeII] peaks are clearly associated with the jet, while the CO, HI and NaI peaks are spatially unresolved and coincident with the source, as is expected for emission associated with accretion processes. The H2 profile along the slit is resolved into multiple components, which increase in size though decrease in intensity with distance from the source. This trend might be consistent with thermal expansion of packets of gas ejected during periods of increased accretion activity. Indeed, for the brightest component nearest the source, proper motion measurements indicate a tangential velocity of 0.028 arcsec/year. It therefore seems unlikely that this emission peak is associated with a stationary zone of warm gas at the base of the jet. However, the same can not be said for the [FeII] peak, for which we see no evidence for motion downwind, even though radial velocity measurements indicate that the emission is associated with higher jet velocities. The Paschen beta (1.2822 micron) emission line found in the near-infrared spectra of T-Tauri stars (TTSs) is believed to trace the accretion of material onto the central star. We present spectroscopic data which suggests that this may not always be the case. The technique of spectro-astrometry is used by us to measure positional displacements in the Pab emission from four T-Tauri stars, namely DG Tau, V536 Aql, LkHalpha 321 and RW Aur. We also observed the optical forbidden emission from these sources. Forbidden emission lines are formed in the outflows that accompany the evolution of protostars and so are ideal to use as a comparison to confirm that the measured offsets in the Pab emission are indeed due to outflowing material. Models based on the magnetospheric accretion theory have been the most successful to date in explaining the origin of atomic hydrogen emission lines. Yet we see that the line profiles of the sources showing displacement in their Pab emission all have features that the magnetospheric accretion model has so far failed to explain, such as broad full width half maxima, large wings and an absence of red shifted absorption features. The failure of the models to explain the presence of large extended wings in the line profiles is particularly interesting in the context of this study as in all cases it is in the extended wings that we measure offsets in position with respect to the source., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures
