The role and benefits of using statistical methodology in the development and optimisation of materials and processes are discussed. It is shown that considerable benefits accrue from the use of an appropriate design in which a number of factors (process parameters) are varied simultaneously while the system responses such as percentage recovery, degree of separation and purity are monitored and ultimately optimised. Compared with the commonly encountered approach which considers one factor at a time, this scheme has the advantage of reduced experimentation and yields quantitative information on the significance of each factor and their combinations on the measured response., The role and benefits of using statistical methodology in the development and optimisation of materials and processes are discussed.
