Abstract

The first direct detection of neutrinos at the LHC not only marks the beginning of a novel collider neutrino program at CERN but also motivates considering additional neutrino detectors to fully exploit the associated physics potential. We investigate the feasibility and physics potential of neutrino experiments located at the surface-level. A topographic desk study was performed to identify all points at which the LHC's neutrino beams exit the earth. The closest location lies about 9 km east of the CMS interaction point, at the bottom of Lake Geneva. Several detectors to be placed at this location are considered, including a water Cherenkov detector and an emulsion detector. The detector concepts are introduced, and projections for their contribution to the LHC forward neutrino program and searches for dark sector particles are presented. However, the dilution of the neutrino flux over distance reduces the neutrino yield significantly, limiting the physics potential of surface-level detectors compared to ones closer to the interaction point, including the proposed FPF., Comment: 21 pages, 13 figures

2. Comparison between a Two-Wavelength Absolute Distance Meter and a GNSS-Based Distance Meter at CERN Geodetic Network.

Abstract

Absolute distance determination, which is the determination of distances consistent with the International System of Units (SI) definition of meter, is a current challenge for distances of several kilometers in the open air and with submillimetric accuracies, which is being increasingly demanded for scientific and technological applications. We present the first comparison of two techniques recently developed for this purpose: the Arpent Absolute Distance Meter and the improved Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based distance meter. Both techniques have been tested and compared on the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) geodetic network during a 2-week observation campaign. The results obtained include the rigorous determination of the uncertainties for both methodologies. In the end, four baselines of 2.2, 4.8, 6.0, and 6.5 km were measured, and for three of them, the differences between the two systems were less than 0.7 mm. The baseline of 4.8 km showed a difference of 2.7 mm, i.e., about 0.6 parts per million (ppm): in the case of conventional optical telemetry, such an agreement would require refractivity correction with knowledge of the air temperature and pressure at better than 0.6 K and 0.15 hPa, respectively. 3. Towards centimetric Geoid over FCC area: application of the Stokes-Helmert method

Abstract

Knowing the local variations of the gravity field is a prerequisite for an accurate accelerator alignment in a Euclidean plane, especially for large machines. Within the scope of the Future Circular Collider (FCC), the proposed next-generation particle collider with a circumference of 91 km, efforts are made to compute a local centimetric geoid. Local and global geoid models covering the studied area are not consistent (decimetric differences), so a local solution must be found. To achieve the computation of a centimetric geoid, that will be used for the construction of the tunnel and then refined for the alignment, different methodologies are studied. This paper focuses on the application of the Stokes-Helmert method (Fugro/UNB SHGeo+ package) to compute a local gravimetric geoid. The paper first describes the evaluation of the gravity dataset provided by the BGI (Bureau Gravimétrique International), the IGN (Institut Géographique National) and Swisstopo (Federal Office of Topography). Then the computation of the geoid model is developed, evaluating the influence of lateral rock density variations. Finally, its accuracy is evaluated using a dedicated 40 km geodetic control profile composed of 36 GNSS/levelling stations and 83 deflections of the vertical observations.
