Abstract

High‐throughput satellite (HTS) is an ideal way to realize cross‐regional massive, multifaceted digital exchange services, and it requires a signal processing module that can be massively multiplexed and has high flexibility. Due to the limitations of the frequency characteristics, microwave integrated circuits are difficult to meet this requirement. One solution to this problem is photonic integrated circuits (PICs). However, full‐size PIC satellite payloads containing main optoelectronic components are extremely challenging to implement on monolithic or hybrid integrated platforms. Here, the study demonstrates a hybrid integrated on‐chip microwave‐photonic satellite repeater with large‐scale multiplexing potential and high flexibility. This is a demonstration of a hybrid integration of a InP/Si3N4 external cavity laser, arrayed InP modulators, and semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), as well as multifunctional Si3N4 signal processors, to fulfill a 1 × 4 Ka‐band repeater module with on‐chip arrayed frequency down‐conversion and outstanding narrowband photonic channelization. When combined with the full‐chip photonic RF repeater, broadband, highly integrated, and cost‐effective communications satellite payloads will become realizable more quickly in the near future. Abstract

This article presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of the first photonic-assisted receiver module for a Scan-on-Receive synthetic aperture radar (SCORE-SAR) intended for Earth observation from space. The module is a hybrid photonic integrated circuit (PIC) that is designed to do precise and continuous beamforming-on-receive of wideband signals from a 12 antenna elements array, synthesizing up to three simultaneous beams. The PIC also implements frequency-agnostic photonic down-conversion so that the synthesized beams can be directly digitized. The PIC is realized by the hybrid integration of active chips on indium phosphide and a passive chip on silicon nitride. The design steps of the photonic module are discussed in this article, including: the functional designs, the optical mask designs, the filters designs, the printed circuit boards (PCB) design, and the control electronics that drive the PIC. Characterization and tuning of the different building blocks of the PIC is also presented, and frequency down-conversion functionality is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has made it into the clinic in the last decade with systems based on bulk optical components. The next disruptive step will be the introduction of handheld OCT systems. Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) technology is the key enabler for this further miniaturization. PIC technology allows signal processing on a stable platform and the implementation of a common path interferometer in that same platform creates a robust fully integrated OCT system with a flexible fiber probe. In this work the first PIC based handheld and integrated common path based spectral domain OCT system is described and demonstrated. The spectrometer in the system is based on an Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) and fully integrated with the CCD and a fiber probe into a system operating at 850 nm. The AWG on the PIC creates a 512 channel spectrometer with a resolution of 0.22 nm enabling a high speed analysis of the full A-scan. The silicon nitride based proprietary waveguide technology (TriPleXTM) enables low loss complex photonic structures from the visible (405 nm) to IR (2350 nm) range, making it a unique candidate for OCT applications. Broadband AWG operation from visible to 1700 nm has been shown in the platform and Photonic Design Kits (PDK) are available enabling custom made designs in a system level design environment. This allows a low threshold entry for designing new (OCT) designs for a broad wavelength range.
