The microplastics (MPs), due to their high dispersion and bioaccumulation rates, have been identified in various animal groups, such as anuran amphibians during both larval and adult stages. However, current studies on adult anuran amphibians focus on assessing only one exposure route, the digestive system, while other routes remain underestimated. Therefore, this present study aimed to evaluate the degree of contamination in the digestive, respiratory, and integumentary systems, in situ, of two endemic Amazonian adult anuran species (Physalaemus ephippifer and Boana multifasciata). From this, we identified and characterized microplastic particles for each exposure route, assessed the effects of morphometric measures on the total MP contamination level and in the gastrointestinal tract (GIT). Additionally, we determined different contamination indices and how they vary according to species and systems. Based on our data, the digestive and integumentary exposure routes showed the highest contamination levels for both species. Additionally, variations in MP contamination levels indicated that P. ephippifer had a higher level of MP contamination. Thus, this study provides the first evidence of microplastic exposure through respiratory and integumentary routes in adult anurans in situ, and it is the first to identify MP contamination in terrestrial biomonitors in the Amazon., Competing Interests: Declarations. Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a significant class of contaminants due to their widespread presence in various environmental compartments. The ingestion of these particles poses a risk to both human health and the local biota. The investigation of the Santos estuary reveals the abundance of microplastics in the mangrove sediment. The highest concentration was 62,850-93,050 MPs·kg -1 dw, never seen before in Latin America coast. The region investigated is characterized for silting sites and low energy events, notably Rio dos Bugres, influenced by anthropic aspects, while the São Vicente e Santos channels prevail the high energy hydrodynamic regime. In consequence, the MPs are entrapped in the interior of the estuary, affecting drastically the biota of mangrove. Spectroscopic investigation identified: polymers, pigments, herbicide and additives. Plastic production and consumption hubs are mainly concentrated in urban centers, causing the soil in these places to become sinks of plastic fragments. Adhesive vinyl polymers are widely used in various commercial sectors and, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the potential for this type of material to form microplastics in urban soils. This proof-of-concept work started by studying the soil around a sign made of adhesive vinyl that had been exposed to the weather for eight years and showed evident signs of degradation, like cracking and color fading. We separated the microplastics with a two-step density separation protocol and selected only the microplastics targeted by this research, finding up to 5,570 fragments produced from 1 cm 2 of adhesive vinyl film. In the soil below the sign, we registered 5.6 × 10 4 fragments kg -1 of dry soil on its topsoil layer (0-10 cm), 1.2 × 10 4 fragments kg -1 in the 10-20 cm layer, and 1 × 10 4 fragments kg -1 in the 20-30 layer. At a distance of 1 and 2 m from the sign, the highest concentration of fragments was also in the topsoil, respectively 9.3 × 10 3 and 5.3 × 10 2 fragments kg -1 . We also observed that vertical and horizontal transport was not favored, causing the formation of hotspots near the source and that the area of the fragments did not influence vertical transport. Another important finding regarding the characterization technique is that degraded polyvinyl chloride is unlikely to be identified through FTIR without comparison to the source. Interactions between birds and plastics cause several damages like death due to entanglement and blockage of the digestive tract. However, the impacts of plastics on both marine and terrestrial bird nests require further investigation. Recently, Lopes et al. (2024) published the first report on the presence of plastic debris in bird nests (Psarocolius decumanus) for the Amazon. The polymeric composition of fibers was determined, as well as the presence of six dyes in abandoned, fallen nests, of which five are potentially toxic. A month later, Monteiro et al. (2024) published a short communication, describing "plastic nests" of Cacicus cela and Pitangus sulphuratus for the Amazon. Here, we demonstrate that most of the nests presented in the study are in fact from P. decumanus and were wrongly identified as nests of C. cela, as well as inconsistencies regarding the identification of the birds. We use non-resonant Raman scattering to demonstrate a large enhancement of the effective refractive index experienced by Raman photons in a scattering medium comprising spatially-correlated photonic structures of core-shell TiO 2 @Silica scatterers mixed with silica nanoparticles and suspended in ethanol. We show that the high refractive index extends outside the physical boundary of the medium, which is attributed to the evanescent contributions of electromagnetic modes that are strongly localized within the medium. Notably, the effective enhancement can be observed even at very low intensities of Raman emission. This anomalous non-linear phenomenon could be explained by the successive polarization of valence electrons to virtual states induced by the strong photon correlations in the strongly localized electromagnetic modes. The enhancement of refractive index and its extension in the vicinity of the medium's interface provide new opportunities for controlling the electromagnetic fields in advanced photonic devices.

A significant limitation in current coastal pollution research is that microplastics (<5 mm) comprise only a fraction of all anthropogenic microparticles (AMP, <5 mm) scale residues. Comprehensive AMP assessments, including those comprising semisynthetic, and modified natural compositions, are lacking. For instance, the accumulation of AMP in different coastal morphological features within a depositional system remains poorly known, fueling long-lasting debates about the distribution process of microparticles. Using a multi-proxy approach, we address mutual interactions between distinct surface morphologies (tidal flats, beaches, and foredunes) and transport and deposition dynamics of AMP. This issue was addressed by analyzing sediment and water samples collected at a marine protected area in the south coastal of São Paulo (Brazil). Here, we showed that AMP abundance in the tidal mudflat (18,500-20,500 particles/kg) was four times higher than in beach sands (4700-5900 particles/kg), while the lowest abundance was observed in foredune sands (4350 particles/kg). This can be attributed to the low-energy hydrodynamics of tidal flats associated with the cohesive behavior of muddy sediments, which consequently favor trapping and act as the main sink for AMP. Further, coastal processes (waves and currents) drive AMP onshore through sediment transport from the surfzone to the beach, from where the AMP becomes available for onshore eolian transport. Higher AMP abundance (85 particles/l) was observed in the marine water samples compared to the estuarine water samples (35 particles/l). Fibers <1 mm appeared as the predominant AMP in the sediment (99-100 %) and water (80-95 %) samples, primarily consisting of modified cellulose (73 %), dye signature only (16 %), and microplastics (11 %). Understanding the extent and implications of microplastic (MP) pollution along the São Paulo State coastline in southeastern Brazil is crucial, considering the significant environmental burden imposed by industrial and port activities in this region. This research aims to understand the complex dynamics of MP deposition on sandy beaches, which poses severe environmental risks to coastal ecosystems, marine organisms, and humans. Using a comprehensive five-step methodology-geodetic surveys, sediment collection, μ-RAMAN spectrometry for polymer identification, and multivariate statistical models-we analyzed the distribution of MPs across six coastal compartments (C1 to C6). The results (128 samples from 34 profiles) revealed relatively high MP concentrations in C3 and C2, which were likely influenced by local human activities. Various shape types of MPs, such as pellets, fragments, and fibers, present distinct distribution patterns based on their physical properties and emission sources. Fragments and foam were the most prevalent, accounting for 42 % and 35 %, respectively, of the 1026 MP items identified in total. Statistical analyses revealed significant correlations between MP types and beach morphometric features, with higher elevations correlating with increased MP concentrations, particularly for pellets and foam. Beaches with intermediate slopes (0.05 < tanβ <0.12) and openings to the southern quadrant tended to accumulate more MPs. This research underscores the importance of tailored management strategies that consider the unique characteristics of each coastal region to mitigate the impacts of MP pollution. Birds have been impacted by plastic pollution via entanglement, accidental ingestion, and exposure to chemical contaminants. However, plastics were also observed as a nesting material for several species. For the first time, we describe the occurrence and composition of plastics in 36 nests of the crested oropendola (Psarocolius decumanus) in three different sites on the Amazon coast. Plastics were present in 67 % of abandoned, fallen nests. At the mangrove site, all nests contained plastics, while at the grassy clearing and the fishermen's village, plastics were present at 35.3 and 90 % of the nests, respectively. Blue fibers and ropes were the main plastics observed, probably derived from discarded fishing gear. Of 79 analyzed fibers, 97.5 % were composed of Polyethylene, and 83.5 % contained Cobalt Phthalocyanine as an additive. Objective: This study compared three protocols for developing artificial white spot lesions (WSL) using biofilm models., Methodology: In total, 45 human enamel specimens were sterilized and allocated into three groups based on the biofilm model: Streptococcus sobrinus and Lactobacillus casei (Ss+Lc), Streptococcus sobrinus (Ss), or Streptococcus mutans (Sm). Specimens were incubated in filter-sterilized human saliva to form the acquired pellicle and then subjected to the biofilm challenge consisting of three days of incubation with bacteria (for demineralization) and one day of remineralization, which was performed once for Ss+Lc (four days total), four times for Ss (16 days total), and three times for Sm (12 days total). After WSL creation, the lesion fluorescence, depth, and chemical composition were assessed using Quantitative Light-induced Fluorescence (QLF), Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), and Raman Spectroscopy, respectively. Statistical analysis consisted of two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc test (α=0.05). WSL created using the Ss+Lc protocol presented statistically significant higher fluorescence loss (ΔF) and integrated fluorescence (ΔQ) in comparison to the other two protocols (p<0.001)., Results: In addition, Ss+Lc resulted in significantly deeper WSL (137.5 µm), followed by Ss (84.1 µm) and Sm (54.9 µm) (p<0.001). While high mineral content was observed in sound enamel surrounding the WSL, lesions created with the Ss+Lc protocol showed the highest demineralization level and changes in the mineral content among the three protocols., Conclusion: The biofilm model using S. sobrinus and L. casei for four days was the most appropriate and simplified protocol for developing artificial active WSL with lower fluorescence, higher demineralization, and greater depth.

Microplastic pollution is a growing public concern as these particles are ubiquitous in various environments and can fragment into smaller nanoplastics. Another environmental concern arises from widely used engineered nanoparticles. Despite the increasing abundance of these nano-sized pollutants and the possibility of interactions with organisms at the sub cellular level, with many risks still being unknown, there are only a few publications on this topic due to the lack of reliable techniques for nanoparticle characterization. We propose a multi-technique approach for the characterization of nanoparticles down to the 10 nm level using standard micro-Raman spectroscopy combined with standard atomic force microscopy. We successfully obtained single-particle spectra from 25 nm sized polystyrene and 9 nm sized TiO 2 nanoparticles with corresponding mass limits of detection of 8.6 ag (attogram) and 1.6 ag, respectively, thus demonstrating the possibility of achieving an unambiguous Raman signal from a single, small nanoparticle with a resolution comparable to more complex and time-consuming technologies such as Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy and Photo-Induced Force Microscopy.

This study introduces a novel method for producing Ag nanoclusters (NCs) within GeO 2 -PbO glasses doped with Tm 3+ ions. Sample preparation involved the melt-quenching method, employing adequate heat treatment to facilitate Ag NC formation. Absorption spectroscopy confirmed trivalent rare-earth ion incorporation. Ag NC identification and the amorphous structure were observed using transmission electron microscopy. A tunable visible emission from blue to the yellow region was observed. The energy transfer mechanism from Ag NCs to Tm 3+ ions was demonstrated by enhanced 800 nm emission under 380 and 400 nm excitations, mainly for samples with a higher concentration of Ag NCs; moreover, the long lifetime decrease of Ag NCs at 600 nm (excited at 380 and 400 nm) and the lifetime increase of Tm 3+ ions at 800 nm (excitation of 405 nm) corroborated the energy transfer between those species. Therefore, we attribute this energy transfer mechanism to the decay processes from S 1 →T 1 and T 1 →S 0 levels of Ag NCs to the 3 H 4 level of Tm 3+ ions serving as the primary path of energy transfer in this system. GeO 2 -PbO glasses demonstrated potential as materials to host Ag NCs with applications for photonics as solar cell coatings, wideband light sources, and continuous-wave tunable lasers in the visible spectrum, among others.

Random lasers have been studied using many materials, but only a couple have used glass matrices. Here, we present a study of zinc tellurite and aluminum oxide doped with different percentages of neodymium oxide (4 wt.%, 8 wt.%, and 16 wt.%) and demonstrate for the first time random laser action at 1337 nm. Laser emission was verified and the laser pulse's rise time and input-output power slope were obtained. A cavity composed of the sample's pump surface and an effective mirror formed by a second, parallel layer at the gain-loss boundary was probably the main lasing mechanism of this random laser system. The reason for the absence of emission at 1064 nm is thought to be a measured temperature rise in the samples' active volume.

Ordered photonic structures (photonic crystals) have seen increasing interest in recent years due to their potential applications, which depend on fabrication technologies suitable for mass production. In this paper, we studied by light diffraction the order in photonic colloidal suspensions composed by core-shell ( T i O 2 @ S i l i c a ) nanoparticles suspended in ethanol and water solutions. Light diffraction measurements show order in these photonic colloidal suspensions, being stronger in ethanol compared with suspensions in water. Strong and long-range Coulomb interaction explains the order and correlation in the scatterers' ( T i O 2 @ S i l i c a ) position, which favors significantly the interferential processes as localization of light.

The photoelastic dispersion coefficient represents the relationship between stress and the differences in refractive indices in a birefringent material. However, determining the coefficient using photoelasticity is challenging, as it is difficult to determine the refractive indices within photoelastic samples that are under tension. Here we present, for the first time, to our knowledge, the use of polarized digital holography to investigate the wavelength dependence of the dispersion coefficient in a photoelastic material. A digital method is proposed to analyze and correlate the differences in mean external stress with differences in mean phase. The results confirm the wavelength dependence of the dispersion coefficient, with an accuracy improvement of 25% compared to other photoelasticity methods.

This work investigates the optical properties of Yb 3+ ions doped GeO 2 -PbO glasses containing Ag nanoclusters (NCs), produced by the melt-quenching technique. The lack in the literature regarding the energy transfer (ET) between these species in these glasses motivated the present work. Tunable visible emission occurs from blue to orange depending on the Yb 3+ concentration which affects the size of the Ag NCs, as observed by transmission electron microscopy. The ET mechanism from Ag NCs to Yb 3+ ions ( 2 F 7/2 → 2 F 5/2 ) was attributed to the S 1 →T 1 decay (spin-forbidden electronic transition between singlet-triplet states) and was corroborated by fast and slow lifetime decrease (at 550 nm) of Ag NCs and photoluminescence (PL) growth at 980 nm, for excitations at 355 and 405 nm. The sample with the highest Yb 3+ concentration exhibits the highest PL growth under 355 nm excitation, whereas at 410 nm it is the sample with the lowest concentration. The restriction of Yb 3+ ions to the growth of NCs is responsible for these effects. Thus, higher Yb 3+ concentration forms smaller Ag NCs, whose excitation at 355 nm leads to more efficient ET to Yb 3+ ions compared to 410 nm. These findings have potential applications in the visible to near-infrared regions, such as tunable CW laser sources and photovoltaic devices.

Three laser resonators are demonstrated emitting at 1053 nm and pumped at 797 nm by volume Bragg grating-equipped diodes, achieving the highest reported efficiencies for Nd:YLF in a four-level system, to the best of our knowledge. A peak output power of 880 W is achieved by pumping the crystal with a diode stack of 1.4 kW of peak pump power.

When considering dynamically stable resonators, ring lasers are good choices because they have a stability interval that is twice as large as that of linear resonators and sensitivity to misalignment decreasing with pump power; however, the literature does not provide easy design guidelines. A ring resonator utilizing Nd:YAG side pumped by diodes allowed single-frequency operation. The output single-frequency laser had good output characteristics; however, the overall length of the resonator did not allow for building a compact device with low misalignment sensitivity and larger spacing between longitudinal modes which could improve single-frequency performance. Based on previously developed equations, which allow for ease of design of a ring dynamically stable resonator, we discuss how to build an equivalent ring resonator, aiming to building a shorter resonator with the same stability zone parameters. The study of the symmetric resonator containing a pair of lenses allowed us to find the conditions to build the shortest possible resonator.

Nd 3+ -doped GeO 2 -PbO glass with silver (Ag) nanoparticles (NPs) are produced with double line waveguides through fs laser processing for photonic applications. A Ti:sapphire fs laser at 800 nm was used to write the waveguides directly into the glass 0.7 mm beneath the surface. This platform is based on pairs of parallel lines with spacing of 10 µm, each pair being formed by two identical written lines but in two different configurations of 4 or 8 separately processed lines, which are coincident. The results of optical microscopy, absorbance measurements, refractive index change, beam quality factor (at 632 and 1064 nm), photoluminescence, propagation losses, and relative gain at 1064 nm are presented. The structural changes in the glass due to the presence of Ag NPs were investigated by Raman spectroscopy. At 632 and 1064 nm, x,y-symmetrical guiding was observed, and for both kinds of overlapping pulses, a refractive index alteration of 10 -3 was found in both directions. Photoluminescence growth of ~47% at 1064 nm was observed due to the plasmonic effect of Ag NPs. In dual waveguides containing Ag NPs, the relative gain obtained increased by 40% and 30% for four and eight overlapping lines, respectively, at 600 mW of 808 nm pump power, when compared to waveguides without those metallic NPs. We highlight the resultant positive internal gains of 5.11 and 7.12 dB/cm that showed a growth of ~40% and ~30%, respectively, with respect to the samples without Ag NPs. The increase in photoluminescence and relative gain were related to the local field growth produced by Ag NPs. The present results show that the addition of Ag NPs impacts positively on the optical performance at 1064 nm of double line waveguides processed by fs laser writing in Nd 3+ -doped GeO 2 -PbO glass, opening news perspectives for photonics.

A Nd:YAG rod single-frequency ring laser based on side-pumped commercial modules is presented. Thermally induced birefringence compensation was applied in a dynamically stable resonator providing 55.6 W of continuous, linearly polarized, TEM 00 output. The particular case of a symmetric ring resonator containing one or two focusing rods and a pair of curved mirrors was analyzed and a design technique is presented, allowing for easy, continuous shaping of the stability limits by changing only the distances in the resonator.

We study the light-matter coupling by Raman scattering in colloidal suspensions composed by core-shell TiO 2 @Silica (Rutile@Silica) nanoparticles suspended in ethanol and water solutions. Strong enhancement of the Raman signal per particle is observed as [TiO 2 @Silica] is increased above a threshold, being stronger in ethanol suspensions. Moreover, above this [TiO 2 @Silica] threshold, the optical transmittance of the ethanol suspension starts to be considerably lower than in water, despite scattering strength being higher in water. These results are attributed to localization of light induced by strong correlation in the scatterers' position as a consequence of the long-range Coulomb interaction between the TiO 2 @Silica nanoparticles. Light diffraction in TiO 2 @Silica suspensions (water and ethanol) shows strong correlation in the scatterers' position (structure seemingly cubic), being stronger in ethanol than in water (longer-range Coulomb interaction). As a result, we demonstrate in these colloidal suspensions for the first time, to our knowledge, strongly enhanced light-matter coupling through correlation-induced localization with kl T much higher than unity and in an ordered colloidal-photonic structure. This strong enhancement of light-matter coupling by localization of light opens an avenue for manufacturing powerful sensing tools.

Wavelengths in the yellow-orange range are of significant interest for retinal photocoagulation and are especially important in the case of diabetic retinopathy, which can cause blindness and affects 3.3% of all working-age adults. This work presents a highly-efficient, compact, and cost-efficient side-pumped, intracavity Raman configuration to achieve this objective. A side-pumped Nd:YLF/KGW/LBO frequency-doubled Raman laser producing 11.7 W of output power at 1147 nm with 21% of slope efficiency and 6 W of output power at 573.5 nm with 12% slope efficiency is demonstrated.

Silica aerogel is a lightweight material, well known for its good mechanical and thermal characteristics, but its optical properties have received less attention, because it is weakly scattering. Here we present for the first time the lasing properties and their complex dynamics of silica aerogel doped with R6G. It is shown that the Q factors of the lasing modes determine the operation of the laser, being either resonant or ASE-lasing. For resonant lasing, the number of resonators is easily varied and the number of modes in a single resonator and their emission frequency can be dynamically adjusted, making this a truly versatile photonics material., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

A simple, reliable, linearly polarized laser source with very high beam quality is demonstrated using standard diode-side-pumped Nd:YAG modules. The laser produced 30 W of output power with beam quality factor M 2 <1.15 over the entire range of input powers and beam quality of 1.02 at the laser operation point. This is, to our knowledge, the highest beam quality for a dynamically stable high-power laser that uses an optically isotropic crystal. The laser was used as a pump source for an optical parametric oscillator based on a periodically poled lithium niobate, producing wavelength in the 1.5-3.8 μm range.

Anderson localization of light and random lasing in this critical regime is an open research frontier, which besides being a basic research topic could also lead to important applications. This article investigates the random laser action at the localization transition in a strongly disordered scattering medium composed of a colloidal suspension of core-shell nanoparticles (TiO 2 @Silica) in ethanol solution of Rhodamine 6G. The classical superfluorescence band of the random laser was measured separately by collecting the emission at the back of the samples, showing a linear dependence with pumping fluence without gain depletion. However, frontal collection showed saturation of the absorption and emission. Narrow peaks of approximately equal intensity are observed on top of the classical superfluorescence band, indicating suppression of the interaction between the peaks modes. The linewidth of these peaks is lower than that of the passive modes of the scattering medium. A method called fraction of absorbed pumping allowed us to infer that this peak's mode (localized modes) is confined to a shallow region near the input-pumping border., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing financial interest.

Light sources are used in optofluidic devices for real-time system control and quantitative analysis of important process parameters. In this work, we present a random laser source using a hollow-core antiresonant reflecting optical waveguide (HC-ARROW) containing the gain media inside a reservoir to reduce dye bleaching, which is connected to microchannel waveguides to increase beam directionality. The device is pumped externally and emits a highly coherent and collimated laser beam.

We report resonant feedback random lasing from dye-doped biopolymer films, consisting of a deoxyribonucleic acid-cetyltrimethylammonium (DNA-CTMA) complex doped with DCM dye. In the proposed devices, the optical feedback for random lasing is given by scattering centers randomly positioned along the edges of the active area. Scattering elements are either titanium dioxide nanoparticles or random defects at the interface between active polymer and air. Different emission spectra are observed, depending on the geometry of the excited area. A single random resonator with dimensions of 2.6 mm x 0.65 mm is fabricated and random emission with resonant feedback is obtained by uniformly pumping the full device.

We report an alternative experimental setup to laterally focus light at an angle of 90 deg relative to turbid, multiple scattering media, using preprocessing wavefront shaping. We compare the measured image quality to one obtained in the usual configuration for focusing light through turbid media, where focusing occurs behind the scattering sample. We demonstrate that the depth of focus in the lateral configuration is of the same order of the usual transversal one because both setups are designed to operate in the deep Fresnel zone. This result shows that this novel, versatile lateral configuration allows for effectively focusing around corners through multiple scattering samples.

Here we report, to the best of our knowledge, the first diode-side-pumped continuous wave (cw) Nd3+:YVO4 self-Raman laser operating at 1176 nm. The compact cavity design is based on the total internal reflection of the laser beam at the pumped side of the Nd3+:YVO4 crystal. Configurations with a single bounce and a double bounce of the laser beam at the pumped faced have been characterized, providing a quasi-cw peak output power of more than 8 W (multimode) with an optical conversion efficiency of 11.5% and 3.7 W (TEM00) having an optical conversion efficiency of 5.4%, respectively. Cw output power of 1.8 W has been demonstrated.

We analyze the performance of a VBG equipped diode of narrow linewidth in a side-pumped double-beam, mode-controlled resonator and demonstrate power scaling without loss of beam quality by a factor of three, when compared to previous results. 69 W of diffraction-limited laser output power at 1053 nm in a Nd:YLF lasers are demonstrated with slope efficiency of 65% and record optical-to-optical efficiency of 60%.

Here we report 10 laser emission lines in the attractive deep blue to cyan spectral region from an intracavity frequency doubled Raman laser. The fundamental laser field that drives the Raman laser is based on the three-level transition of Nd:YLF. A maximum extracted quasi-continuous wave (qcw) output power of 0.94 W is achieved in the deep blue to cyan spectral regime.

An intracavity Raman laser based on laser transition in Nd:YLF is reported. Quasi-continuous wave Stokes output power was observed at 990 and 976 nm, and up to 0.88 W of peak output power was obtained at 990 nm.

Efficient lasers operating in the 1.3 μm band are of interest in the health industry for frequency conversion to the visible spectral region and for Raman shifting to the eye-safe 1.5 μm region. In this work, we demonstrate for the first time, to our knowledge, a side-pumped Nd:YLiF(4) laser emitting at 1.3 μm. An output power of up to 14.9 W was obtained at 1313 nm with 54 W of absorbed pump power, representing 27.7% optical efficiency and a slope efficiency of 45%.

A wavefront sensor for thermally induced lens and passive lens characterization based on low-coherence digital speckle interferometry was developed and studied. By illuminating the optical setup with two slightly detuned red diode lasers, whole-field contour interference fringes were generated according to the resulting synthetic wavelength. For fringe pattern visualization the optical setup used the light transmitted through a ground glass plate as object beam. The performance of the sensor was investigated and its versatility was demonstrated by measuring the thermal lens induced in an Er-doped glass sample pumped by a 1.76-W diode laser emitting at 976 nm and by evaluating the wavefront distortion introduced by an ophthalmic progressive lens.

The results of many investigations on low-level laser therapy are contradictory and this is due to the large number of illumination parameters as well as the inability to measure the possible effects after irradiation with the necessary objectivity and the fact that the light needs to pass thorough barriers (usually the plastic of the culture dish/plate and culture medium) to reach the cells. In this manner, the objective of this study was to determine the absorption coefficient, penetration depth and effective transmission in materials commonly used in cell cultures. Among the most commonly used wavelengths in low-level laser therapy, the lowest absorption coefficients were reached by DMEM and RPMI (α = 0.03 cm(-1)), from 633 to 690 nm, which reach an effective transmission of 93% of incident radiation and penetration depth of 33 cm. Among the solid materials in the same range of the electromagnetic spectrum, the lowest absorption coefficient was obtained for the polystyrene (Petri dish and well plate), with α = 1.31 cm(-1), 78% of effective transmission and 0.76 cm of penetration depth. Random lasing in nanocrystalline Nd(3+):YVO(4) powder is demonstrated. A method that analyzes the decay kinetics after long-pulse excitation is used to determine the laser characteristics. This method permits to measure the fractional contribution of spontaneous and stimulated emission as well as upconversion as a function of the pump intensity. We observed that maximum linewidth narrowing is achieved when the stimulated emission reaches 50% of fractional contribution in the backscattering cone.

A Nd:YLF/KGW Raman laser has been investigated in this work. We have demonstrated CW output powers at six different wavelengths, 1147 nm (0.70 W), 1163 nm (0.95 W), 549 nm (0.65 W), 552 nm (1.90 W), 573 nm (0.60 W) and 581 nm (1.10 W), with higher peak powers achieved under quasi-CW operation. Raman conversion of the 1053 nm fundamental emission is reported for the first time, enabling two new wavelengths in crystalline Raman lasers, 549 nm and 552 nm. Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). In addition, the laser effect was compared on the different affected oral sites., Materials and Methods: Eleven subjects with a total of 25 sites (tongue, lower lip, upper lip, and palate) affected by a burning sensation were selected. The affected areas were irradiated once a week for three consecutive weeks with an infrared laser (λ = 790 nm). The probe was kept in contact with the tissue, and the mucosal surface was scanned during the irradiation. The exposure time was calculated based on the fluence of 6 J/cm(2), the output power of 120 mW, and the area to be treated. Burning intensity was recorded through a visual analog scale before and after the treatment and at the 6-week follow-up. The percentage of the improvement in symptoms was also obtained., Results: Burning intensity at the end of the laser therapy was statistically lower than at the beginning (p < 0.01). Patients reported an 80.4% reduction in the intensity of symptoms after laser treatment. There was no statistical difference between the end of the treatment and the 6-week follow-up, except for the tongue site., Conclusion: Under the investigated parameters, infrared LLLT proved to be a valuable alternative for BMS treatment, providing a significant and lasting reduction in symptoms.

Self-starting self-pulsing dynamics at the cavity free-spectral-range frequency were observed in intracavity second-harmonic generation of a diode end-pumped Nd:YLF ring laser containing a periodically-poled KTiOPO(4) (ppKTP) nonlinear crystal. Although the unidirectional laser was designed for continuous-wave (cw) single-frequency operation, with a resonator set at the middle of its stability range, partial Kerr-lens mode-locking (KLM) arose spontaneously once the ppKTP was inserted. This ultrafast dynamics along with a strong spectral gain broadening, not observed with any birefringent nonlinear doubler, is associated to the finite bandwidth of the quasi-phase-matched crystal with respect to the laser gain bandwidth, leading to giant cascaded Kerr-lensing effects when the ppKTP temperature is detuned from perfect quasi-phase-matching either in the self-focusing or defocusing sides. While under partial KLM operation the laser delivered only approximately 0.14W of broadband red output power, single-frequency operation could be only achieved by using an intracavity etalon with a suitable partial reflectivity (R>or=25%), leading to an optimally (approximately100% efficiency) out-coupled 1.4 W red power at 660.5 nm, as much as the fundamental 1321 nm power that could be extracted from the unidirectional laser using an optimal T = 2% output coupler.

This study was a long-term clinical trial of home and in-office LED and laser bleaching systems comparing for the first time interdental color differences (differences between the central labial surfaces of the canine and the central incisor). A total of 90 patients were divided into three groups of 30 each. One group received day guard vital bleaching, and the other two groups received one bleaching session for 20 min accelerated by a diode laser for 30 s per tooth or a blue LED for 3 min per tooth, and both groups received additionally day guard for 7 days. A total of four color measurements were carried out during the study period of 3 months and 3 weeks. The group treated with the LED tended to show the highest degree of equalization of lightness, chroma and hue. A significantly stronger overall increase in lightness was observed for canines after treatment when compared with incisors resulting in more homogeneous lightness values.

We demonstrate what we believe to be the highest efficiency obtained to date in a transversely diode-pumped Nd3+:YLiF4 slab laser operating at 1053 nm. The compact 11-cm-long laser cavity configuration is based on total internal reflection of the intracavity beam at the pump facet of the gain crystal to improve the overlap with the pump radiation. Multimode operation with 9.5 W of output power and an efficiency of 45% is obtained for 21 W of pump power in a single-pass configuration. Using a second pass through the crystal and a new mode-controlling technique, the beam quality is improved to the diffraction limit with 6.9 W of output power and 33% of optical-to-optical efficiency.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of 960 nm diode laser and acidulated phosphate fluoride on calcium solubility of human dental enamel., Background Data: Interest in diode lasers has grown steadily since its invention due to its inherent advantages and its range of applications. Several other laser types have shown good results in caries prevention; however, there are few studies on dental tissue interactions using diode lasers., Methods: Acid resistance was evaluated using 65 enamel specimens, divided into five groups: control (C), fluoride (F), laser (L), laser + fluoride (LF), and fluoride + laser (FL). The laser was operated using the parameters of 6.5-W peak power, 5-msec pulse duration, 10-Hz repetition rate, and 33-mJ pulse energy. These parameters were previously tested regarding pulpal temperature rise and enamel morphology, and were determined to be safe. The amount of calcium lost during demineralization was measured., Results: The calcium solubility of the laser group was 12% higher than of the control group (p > 0.05). Group F showed a 33.6% increase of acid resistance (p < 0.05). When laser was associated with fluoride, the calcium solubility increased significantly (p < 0.05) compared to both the control group and the laser group. Groups treated with fluoride showed the same results (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: The 960-nm diode laser promoted a slight increase in calcium solubility. A statistically significant reduction on calcium solubility was achieved with the three treatments that involve fluoride (F, FL, and LF). The additional application of laser irradiation did not cause any significant increase or decrease in calcium solubility.

Objective: This investigation evaluated the variation of the intrapulpal temperature when dentine was irradiated by the Er:YAG laser., Background Data: The effect of preparation with the Er:YAG laser on the intrapulpal temperature is probably the biggest problem in using the laser for preparation of dental hard tissue., Materials and Methods: Seventy-two bovine incisors were studied that had the enamel and dentine of the buccal surface polished to a thickness of 2.0 mm. The teeth were divided into three groups, according to the repetition rate used (Group I = 2 Hz, Group II = 4 Hz, and Group III = 6 Hz), and irradiated, with or without water cooling, using 250, 300, and 350 mJ of energy per pulse. Thermocouples were introduced inside the pulp chamber through the palatine opening of the samples and fixed to the vestibular wall of the pulp chamber using a thermal paste., Results: It was verified that there was a decrease of the intrapulpal temperature for all of the parameters in the Group I irradiated with water cooling and for the parameters of 350 mJ/4 Hz with water cooling. The other irradiations showed an increase of the intrapulpal temperature, varying from 0.03 degrees to 2.5 degrees C., Conclusion: We conclude that the use of the Er:YAG laser promoted acceptable temperature increases inside the pulp chamber. However, we do not recommend this procedure without water cooling because macroscopic observations of the dentine irradiated without water cooling showed dark lesions, suggesting carbonization of this tissue.

Objective: This in vitro study examines the efficacy of two different dental whitening agents, Opalescence Xtra and Opus White, by analyzing the change in color achieved by the treatment and the temperature increase induced in the pulpal chamber., Background Data: Bleaching techniques achieved significant advances with the use of coherent or incoherent radiation sources to activate the bleaching chemicals., Methods: The bleaching agents, containing 35% of hydrogen peroxide, were stimulated with 0.9 W of xenon arc lamp and 0.9 W or 2 W of a 960-nm diode laser during 60 sec (0.9 W) and 30 sec (2 W) on 33 extracted human teeth. During irradiation, the temperature in the pulpal cavity was monitored. The color change was evaluated using the CIE L*a*b* color space measurement system., Results: The treated groups showed an increase in color saturation (DeltaC*) of 3-32% and a change in whiteness (DeltaL*) of 0-8%. This study found that only some of the irradiated groups show statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) in the effectiveness of their treatment when compared to the control, whereas no significant statistical difference was obtained in between the irradiated groups. Temperature increase was 2-4 degrees C when using the xenon arc lamp, 2-8 degrees C and 4-12 degrees C when using the diode laser at 0.9 W and 2 W, respectively., Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that Opalescence Extra and Opus White are both effective to provide brighter teeth. However, according to the conditions used in this study, only the xenon arc lamp induced a safer temperature increase.

Background and Objectives: Bleaching techniques achieved significant advances with the use of coherent or incoherent radiation sources to activate the bleaching agents. This in vitro study compares the whitening efficacy of LED and diode laser irradiation using the two agents Opalescence X-tra and HP Whiteness., Study Design/materials and Methods: A total of 60 bovine incisors were randomly divided into six groups, three for each bleaching agent, receiving only agent, agent and LED (wavelength 470 nm), agent and 1.6 W diode laser (808 nm). The results of the irradiations were characterized using the CIEL*a*b* system., Results: Significant differences in the chroma value are obtained for the two whitening agents and for the different light sources. In terms of lightness, the association of Laser and Whiteness HP bleaching gel showed significantly better results than when the same agent was used alone or in combination with LED., Conclusions: Best overall results are obtained with the Whiteness HP and Laser association., ((c) 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc.)

Background and Objectives: Low-intensity laser therapy (LILT) has been studied in many fields of dentistry, but to our knowledge, this is the first time that its effects on orthodontic movement velocity in humans are investigated., Study Design/patients and Methods: Eleven patients were recruited for this 2-month study. One half of the upper arcade was considered control group (CG) and received mechanical activation of the canine teeth every 30 days. The opposite half received the same mechanical activation and was also irradiated with a diode laser emitting light at 780 nm, during 10 seconds at 20 mW, 5 J/cm2, on 4 days of each month. Data of the biometrical progress of both groups were statistically compared., Results: All patients showed significant higher acceleration of the retraction of canines on the side treated with LILT when compared to the control., Conclusions: Our findings suggest that LILT does accelerate human teeth movement and could therefore considerably shorten the whole treatment duration.

Measurements of the bifocal, thermally induced lenses of a cw Nd:YAG laser were obtained. We observed four different focal lengths that are polarization and direction dependent. The focal lengths were used to design stable resonators with large fundamental mode filling in the laser gain medium. The beam is totally polarized in the desired direction even without an intracavity Brewster window. We developed a general approach for the optimization of single-lamp, cw-pumped Nd:YAG lasers. Up to 22 W of cw output power in the vertically polarized TEM(00) mode and 15 W in the horizontal polarization are obtained for moderate lamp currents. Also, we demonstrate mode locking with 56-ps pulse duration at 33 A of lamp current and up to 13 W of average output power.

Passive stable mode locking of a pulsed Nd:YAG laser was achieved with a long-decay-time saturable absorber in a coupled-cavity longitudinal scheme. In this configuration the saturable absorber (LiF:F(2) ) also behaves as an active medium in intracavity pumping and is the load for the Nd laser. This arrangement provides proper lasing conditions for the F(2) color centers so that the cavity photon lifetime of the color centers is much shorter than the cavity round-trip time of the Nd laser. In this way the Nd pulses are simultaneously Q switched and mode locked. The pulses show a stable temporal profile, with an envelope of 160 ns and a train of mode-locked pulses of less than 200-ps duration.
