This article presents information on several books on money, prices, credit, and banking. The book "Qualitative Credit Control," by W.E. Dunkman, is based upon the thesis that credit control has "remained an inherently quantitative concept" and that therein lies the explanation of its failure to attain satisfactory results. Dunkman rejects the theoretical basis upon which quantitative control rests and devotes Part 2 of the book to showing how quantitative control has been inadequate in practice. The criticisms of quantitative control are, first, that it is frequently very difficult for the central bank to make an increase in rates effective, and even when effective the result is to restrict the total quantity of credit and not to restrict the borrowing of individual or industries whose products are not meeting the test of saleability. Debts of this type are not "cleared," and the result may be a general breakdown of the credit structure. Recovery from a depression through credit expansion he holds to be inconsistent since, if expansion can be controlled, there will be no price decline to correct. Not only is it inconsistent but he believes it has proved to be futile in the U.S.

This article presents information on several books related to money and banking. The Book "Money, Bank Credit and Prices," by Lionel D. Edie, addresses the theory of money, credit and prices. Another book "Select Statutes, Document and Reports Relating to British Banking, 1832-1928" by T.E. Gregory, comes to remind one of their present day economic experiments. The book is a collection of documents relating to the determination of policy of Bank of England for the years from 1832 to date, together with some selections relating to the development of joint stock banks. This article also presents information on new books related to money and banking. Some of the books are "The Foreign Exchange Markets: A Practical treatise on Post War Foreign Exchange," by H.F.R. Miller, "The Weekly Wholesale Price Index of the National Fertilizer Association," by W.A. Shelton and "The Coinage of the Mexican Revolutionists," by H. Wood.

Some of the books included are "Stabilization of Prices: A critical Study of the Various Plan Proposed for Stabilization," by Joseph S. Lawrence. This book gives a list of all of the plans for stabilizing the purchasing power of money which are of recent origin, with criticisms of each plan as well as a study of the possible effectiveness of the various means by which stabilization can be accomplished. It is being compiled from the writings of the best known advocates of stabilization, official documents and banking and monetary statistics. "Banking and Currency Development in South Africa. 1652-1927, With an Appendix on the Rise of Saving Banking in South Africa," by E.H.D. Arndt. Though on account of their geographical dissociation, the commercial and political connections between the people of the United States and South Africa have never bulked large, the similarities of their economic and political expansion furnish the basis for a permanent useful mutual interest in each other.

The article presents a list of various books on accounting, business methods, investments and the exchanges. Some of these books are "Investments," by Hastings Lyon, "The Selection and Care of Sound Investments," by Arthur H. Herschel, "Principles of Investment," by A.M. Sakolski and "Fundamentals of Investment," edited by Samuel O. Rice. Herscel writes from the point of view of an investor and diverts the investor from speculation. Lyon's book is addressed to the student in a school of business of collegiate grade, who is assumed to know the elements of corporate finance and the various types of corporation securities and capitalization structure, history of corporate financial practise and policy and of government financing is sketched to give a true setting and perspective. A.M. Sakolski's book aims to present the underlying economic theory as it works in actual investment practice. The book which Samuel O. Rice has edited comprises of nineteen lectures by members of the Investment Bankers' Association of America.

Presents information on and listing of books related to business. "Accounting Principles," by Thomas W. Mitchell; "Credit and the Credit Man," by Peter P. Wahlstad; "The Exchanges and Speculation," by A. W. Atwood; "Cases on the Law of Property," by G. P. Costigan; "The Spirit of Scientific Management," by R. A. Feiss; "Shop Expense Analysis and Control," by N. T. Ficker.

The article presents various books on economics and geography. The book "The Critical Period," deals with the efforts of the British to take over the ceded western territory. Military matters and relations with the Indians thus occupy chief place. Some material on fur trade is found in the last part of the document, commenting on the organization of the Indian Department. Some light is thrown on monetary conditions in the interior. "The Financial Administration of the Colony of Virginia," by Percty Scott Flippin is about American colonial history from the imperial point of view and from official papers in the English public record office. The book "The Canadian Commonwealth," by Acnes C. Laut is a description and analysis of the growth of a feeling of national consciousness in Canada. Then there is a discussion of various problems which are matters of moment in the Dominion today. A very sane and moderate account of the natural resources of Canada has recently been written by Dr F.D. Adams for the conservation commision.
