Astrophysics - Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics ,Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process beta-decay chains. These nuclei are attributed to the p and rp process. For all those processes, current research in nuclear astrophysics addresses the need for more precise reaction data involving radioactive isotopes. Depending on the particular reaction, direct or inverse kinematics, forward or time-reversed direction are investigated to determine or at least to constrain the desired reaction cross sections. The Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research (FAIR) will offer unique, unprecedented opportunities to investigate many of the important reactions. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Comment: Invited Talk given at the Conference Nuclear Physice in Astrophysics VI (NPA6), Lisbon, Portugal, May 19-24 2013. Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The first data from MAX-lab in Lund, Sweden on pion production in photonuclear reactions at threshold energies, is presented. The decrease of the total yield of pi+ in gamma + 12C, 27Al reactions below 200 MeV as well as differential, dsigma/dOmega, cross sections follow essentially predictions from an intranuclear cascade model with an attractive potential for pion-nucleus interaction in its simplest form. Double differential, d2sigma/dOmegadT, cross sections at 176 MeV show, however, deviations from the model, which call for refinements of nuclear and Coulomb potentials and possibly also for coherent pion production mechanisms., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
Small-angle, two-particle correlation functions have been measured for 36Ar+ 112,124Sn collisions at E/A = 61 MeV. Total momentum gated neutron-proton (np) and proton-proton (pp) correlations are stronger for the 124Sn-target. Some of the correlation functions for particle pairs involving deuterons or tritons (nd, pt, and nt) also show a dependence on the isospin of the emitting source., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. A pilot series of 10 [[micro]meter] to 15 [[micro]meter] thin silicon detectors has been made for the [Delta]E-E telescopes in the CHICSi detector system. This system will operate at the CELSIUS heavy ion storage ring in Uppsala, Sweden. [Delta]E-E telescopes provide isotope identification and energy determination of fragments from nuclear collisions. The thin detectors are made as p-i-n diodes in thin etched membranes in 280 [[micro]meter] thick silicon wafers. The membranes are made with anisotropic etching using 25 w% tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution. The etch speed of this solution is very uniform across a wafer. As a result detectors with uniform thickness can be produced. The etch depth varies with less than [+ or -] 0.3 [[micro]meter] over a wafer and the surface microroughness is in the range from 2 to 4 nm. Each detector has a 10.0 mm x 10.0 mm active area on a 10.2 mm x 10.2 mm membrane surrounded by a 1.1 mm wide supporting frame. The detectors have leakage currents in the active area of approximately 0.5 nA at 20 V. The breakdown voltage of the detectors is above 100 V. Evaluation experiments with telescopes consisting of a thin detector in combination with a thick detector have shown excellent isotope separation capabilities. Mass separation of 6Li and 7Li is clearly observable.

24. O+ transport in the dayside magnetosheath and its dependence on the IMF direction

- Abstract
Recent studies have shown that the escape of oxygen ions (O+) into the magnetosheath along open magnetic field lines from the terrestrial cusp and mantle is significant. We present a study of how O+ transport in the dayside magnetosheath depends on the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) direction. There are clear asymmetries in the O+ flows for southward and northward IMF. The asymmetries can be understood in terms of the different magnetic topologies that arise due to differences in the location of the reconnection site, which depends on the IMF direction. During southward IMF, most of the observed magnetosheath O+ is transported downstream. In contrast, for northward IMF we observe O+ flowing both downstream and equatorward towards the opposite hemisphere. We observe evidence of dual-lobe reconnection occasionally taking place during strong northward IMF conditions, a mechanism that may trap O+ and bring it back into the magnetosphere. Its effect on the overall escape is however small: we estimate the upper limit of trapped O+ to be 5%, a small number considering that ion flux calculations are rough estimates. The total O+ escape flux is higher by about a factor of 2 during times of southward IMF, in agreement with earlier studies of O+ cusp outflow.

TheoryofComputation_ANALYSISOFALGORITHMSANDPROBLEMCOMPLEXITY - Abstract
Studies on terrestrial oxygen ion (O+) escape into the interplanetary space have considered a number of different escape paths. Recent observations however suggest a yet insufficiently investigated additional escape route for hot O+: along open magnetic field lines in the high altitude cusp and mantle. Here we present a statistical study on O+ flux in the high-latitude dayside magnetosheath. The O+ is generally seen relatively close to the magnetopause, consistent with observations of O+ flowing primarily tangentially to the magnetopause. We estimate the total escape flux in this region to be ~ 7 × 1024 s−1, implying this escape route to significantly contribute to the overall total O+ loss into interplanetary space.

- Abstract
Radiation hardness measurements have been done by irradiating lateral position sensitive (Si) detectors (LPSD) with 93 eV photons. Three different passivation layers have been investigated, SiO2, oxynitride and deposited 4 nm titanium-layer, on p in n-substrate LPSD and deposited 4 nm titanium layer on n in p-substrate LPSD. Best radiation hardness for 93 eV photon is obtained by using a 4 nm titanium layer. Only a slight decrease in response can be seen in the p in n-substrate LPSD. The best radiation hardness is achieved by using the n in p-substrate LPSD, which show no significant decrease in response. Scanning after irradiation with 93 eV gives only a variation in response of 0.26% in the surrounding area of exposure. No decrease in response can be detected during the scan. Test with a 108 eV photon beam gives an increased variation in response of 0.7%, caused by the shallower absorption in Si.

- Abstract
The nucleosynthesis of elements beyond iron is dominated by neutron captures in the s and r processes. However, 32 stable, proton-rich isotopes cannot be formed during those processes, because they are shielded from the s-process flow and r-process, β-decay chains. The high yield of radioactive isotopes, even far away from the valley of stability, allows the investigation of isotopes involved in processes as exotic as the r or rp processes., Conference Paper

During wind turbines operation, yaw and pitch bearings suffer from sequential traction-compression stresses causing millions of micro movements per cycle between the gear teeth. This situation reduces the lubricant thickness between the teeth until metal contact appears causing excessive wear. The pitch gear lubrication at the zero degree position is carried out during unwind periods or programmed stops that cause important losses in electricity generation. Moreover, low efficiency of current lubrication systems generates the need of a preventive maintenance plan to avoid that the abrasive particles accelerate the premature failure due to wear. This study presents a novel lubrication system that takes advantage of the micro-tribology to continuously supplies fresh grease at the contact region. The system takes advantage of micro-technology to fabricate a micro-nozzle that is the base of a new generation of high efficiency automatic lubrication systems.

- Abstract
Biodiversity often suffers from urbanization. In the present study, we focused on how the duration of urbanization affects the richness of 17 epiphytic lichen species and their cover on large oaks in urban environments in a city of 100 000 inhabitants in southeast Sweden. We also surveyed trees in adjacent rural areas, selected to have similar distributions of tree trunk circumference and surrounding oak density (within 300 m). Lichen richness and cover were lower on urban trees compared to rural trees. Furthermore, richness and cover decreased with the length of time that urban trees had been surrounded by houses. Most of the species that were analysed demonstrated a decline in occurrence with respect to the duration of housing development. The reduction in the probability of occurrence varied from 60% (Calicium viride, Evernia prunastri), 80% (Chrysothrix candelaris) to 90% (Ramalina spp.) during the considered 160-year period of urbanization. Therefore, even if valuable trees survive over the course of development, their lichen biota is likely to become depleted over time. © 2014 The Authors.

Small-angle, two-particle correlation functions have been measured for Ar-36+Sn-112,Sn-124 collisions at E/A=61 MeV. Total momentum gated neutron-proton (np) and proton-proton (pp) correlations are stronger for the Sn-124 target. Some of the correlation functions for particle pairs involving deuterons or tritons (nd, pt, and nt) also show a dependence on the isospin of the emitting source.

- Abstract
We present a case study of high energy oxygen ions (O+) observed in the dayside terrestrial magnetosheath, in the southern hemisphere. It is shown that the presence of O+ is strongly correlated to the IMF direction: O+ is observed only for B-z < 0. Three satellites observe O+ immediately at both sides of the magnetopause and about 2 R-E outside the magnetopause. These conditions indicate escape along open magnetic field lines. We show that if outflowing O+ is heated and accelerated sufficiently in the cusp, it takes 15-20 minutes for it to reach the magnetopause, allowing the ions to escape along newly opened field lines on the dayside. Earlier studies show evidence of strong heating and high velocities of O+ in the cusp and mantle at high altitudes, strengthening our interpretation. The observed magnetosheath O+ fluxes are of the same order as measured in the ionospheric upflow, which indicates that this loss mechanism is significant when it takes place.

- Abstract
Objective: To present the results of primary myringoplasty procedures together with the perforation cause, perforation size and site, surgeons experience, and surgical method, and to investigate how these factors relate to graft take rates. Study design: Retrospective chart review of 243 consecutive patients undergoing primary myringoplasty with temporalis fascia underlay over a 10-year period from 1994 to 2004. Results: The overall graft take rate was 95 per cent. The retroauricular approach resulted in a 97 per cent graft take rate, whereas a significantly lower rate (77 per cent) was seen for surgery conducted via the endaural approach, or via an ear speculum. There was no relationship between other factors and tympanic membrane healing. Conclusion: No association was found between perforation cause and graft take rate. The underlay technique is safe and reliable, and the retroauricular approach is preferable as it enables good surgical access and has better results.

Engineering - Abstract
The performance of a UHV system depends to a large extent on the effort spent in optimising the vacuum chamber as well as the components of the system. This chapter describes the design principles of a UHV system and its building blocks, joining methods, the combined action of flanges, gaskets and bolts, welding and weld preparation, valves, expansion bellows and bakeable vacuum systems.
