Abstract

The pulmonary blood-gas barrier (BGB) is discussed with attention to strength, failure, and structure and to history of science. Recently has it been perceived that the BGB of the lung has a dilemma with conflicting requirements forcing it to be very thin and immensely strong because of high wall stresses concomitant to capillary transmural pressure increases imposed by exercise. Therein lies the central lung biology issue.

Abstract

Photoionization spectra have been recorded in the 4s, 4p and 3d resonance regions for the Kr Iisoelectronic sequence using both the dual laser produced plasma technique (at DCU) to produce photoabsorption spectra, and the merged ion beam and synchrotron radiation technique (at ASTRID) to measure absolute photoionization cross sections. Profile parameters are compared for the 4s − np resonances of Rb+ and Sr2+. Many new 4p " ns, md transitions are identified with the aid of Hartree-Fock calculations, and consistent quantum defects are observed for the various ns and md Rydberg series. Absolute single and double photoionization cross sections recorded in the 3d region for Rb+ and Sr2+ ions show preferential decay via double photoionization. This is only the second report where both the DLP technique and the merged beam technique have been used simultaneously to record photoionization spectra, and the advantages of both techniques (i.e. better resolution in the case of DLP and values for absolute photoionization cross sections in the case of the merged beam technique) are highlighted.

Abstract

Hydrogen-isotopic abundances of lipid biomarkers are emerging as important proxies in the study of ancient environments and ecosystems. A decade ago, pioneering studies made use of new analytical methods and demonstrated that the hydrogen-isotopic composition of individual lipids from aquatic and terrestrial organisms can be related to the composition of their growth (i.e., environmental) water. Subsequently, compound-specific deuterium/hydrogen (D/H) ratios of sedimentary biomarkers have been increasingly used as paleohydrological proxies over a range of geological timescales. Isotopic fractionation observed between hydrogen in environmental water and hydrogen in lipids, however, is sensitive to biochemical, physiological, and environmental influences on the composition of hydrogen available for biosynthesis in cells. Here we review the factors and processes that are known to influence the hydrogen-isotopic compositions of lipids-especially n-alkanes-from photosynthesizing organisms, and we provide a framework for interpreting their D/H ratios from ancient sediments and identify future research opportunities.

Abstract

Growth and aging of silica aggregates are influenced both by temp. and by catalyzing fluorine ions as shown by SAXS and BET surface studies. It was found that both fluorine and increased temp. slightly increased the fractal dimension (Df) during aging, but the fluorine-catalyzed system showed a lower BET surface area. To understand the effect of fluorine and increased temp. on the aggregates, 2D aggregations and SAXS simulations were carried out using two new programs, GRASP and DALAI. In agreement with expts. it was found that binary RLCCA aggregates have a slightly higher Df value compared to DLCCA aggregates and that branch-flexibility during aging increases Df even further

37. Human adaptation to extreme altitude

Abstract

Humans who normally live near sea level make extraordinary short-term adaptations to extreme altitude, a process called acclimatization. The most important feature of the adaptation is intense hyperventilation which, on the summit of Mt. Everest, reduces the alveolar [Pco.sub.2] to less than 10 mmHg (normal sea level value is 40 mmHg). The hyperventilation maintains the alveolar [Po.sub.2] at about 35 mmHg, but the arterial [Po.sub.2] is only about 30 mmHg (normal is 90-100 mmHg) because of diffusion limitation across the blood-gas barrier. The hyperventilation causes a marked respiratory alkalosis with an arterial pH exceeding 7.7. Interestingly this increases the oxygen affinity of hemoglobin, a characteristic which is shared by many other animals that live in oxygen-deprived environments. The advantage of the increased oxygen affinity is that it assists in loading of oxygen in the pulmonary capillary. Maximal oxygen consumption on the summit is just over one 1.[min.sup.-1], that is 20-25% of the sea level value. The oxygen cost of ventilation may be a limiting factor during exercise at extreme altitude. Surprisingly; in spite of the great reduction in anaerobic capacity, anaerobic glycolysis is also severely restricted in acclimatized humans. The oxygen deprivation of high altitude is caused by the low barometric pressure, and it is interesting that most of the high mountains of the world, for example the Himalayas and the Andes, enjoy a relatively high barometric pressure for a given altitude because of their low latitude. In fact if Mt. Everest were at a high latitude, for example, that of Mt. McKinley, it would probably be impossible for climbers to reach the summit without supplementary oxygen, a feat that has now been accomplished on Everest over 100 times. It is an extraordinary coincidence that they highest point on Earth is so close to the limit of human tolerance to hypoxia.
