Abstract

BackgroundThe Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) is a repository of spontaneously-reported adverse drug events (ADEs) for FDA-approved prescription drugs. FAERS reports include both structured reports and unstructured narratives. The narratives often include essential information for evaluation of the severity, causality, and description of ADEs that are not present in the structured data. The timely identification of unknown toxicities of prescription drugs is an important, unsolved problem. ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to develop an annotated corpus of FAERS narratives and biomedical named entity tagger to automatically identify ADE related information in the FAERS narratives. MethodsWe developed an annotation guideline and annotate medication information and adverse event related entities on 122 FAERS narratives comprising approximately 23,000 word tokens. A named entity tagger using supervised machine learning approaches was built for detecting medication information and adverse event entities using various categories of features. ResultsThe annotated corpus had an agreement of over .9 Cohen’s kappa for medication and adverse event entities. The best performing tagger achieves an overall performance of 0.73 F1 score for detection of medication, adverse event and other named entities. ConclusionsIn this study, we developed an annotated corpus of FAERS narratives and machine learning based models for automatically extracting medication and adverse event information from the FAERS narratives. Our study is an important step towards enriching the FAERS data for postmarketing pharmacovigilance.

Abstract

The framework of the seventeen sustainable development goals is a challenge for developers and researchers applying artificial intelligence (AI). AI and earth observations (EO) can provide reliable and disaggregated data for better monitoring of the sustainable development goals (SDGs). In this paper, we present an overview of SDG targets, which can be effectively measured with AI tools. We identify indicators with the most significant contribution from the AI and EO and describe an application of state-of-the-art machine learning models to one of the indicators. We describe an application of U-net with SE blocks for efficient segmentation of satellite imagery for crop detection. Finally, we demonstrate how AI can be more effectively applied in solutions directly contributing towards specific SDGs and propose further research on an AI-based evaluative infrastructure for SDGs., Comment: ICLR workshop "AI for Social Good"

7. Association of pemphigus and systemic corticosteroid use with comorbid health disorders: A case-control study

Abstract

Background: Pemphigus is a group of debilitating autoimmune blistering disorders associated with painful blisters of the skin and/or mucous membranes. Identification and management of the comorbiditiesof pemphigus is critically important to minimize morbidity and decrease mortality.Objective: To identify the comorbid health conditions of pemphigus vulgaris.Methods: This was a case-control study of 130 cases of pemphigus verified by a clinical and laboratory diagnosis and 390 age and sex-matched controls with complete follow-up at a large metropolitanquaternary care medical center.Results: Pemphigus vulgaris and its treatments were significantly associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus (adjusted odds ratio [95% confidence interval]: 5.68 [2.93-11.02]), hypertension (2.15 [1.25-3.71]), osteopenia (10.07 [3.72-27.25]), osteoporosis (4.19 [1.50-11.73]), cataracts (7.00 [1.81-27.07]), insomnia (15.00 [1.75-128.39]), and benign prostatic hyperplasia (6.84 [1.79-26.18]). A history of taking systemic corticosteroids was found in 76% of pemphigus vulgaris patients. There were significant statistical interactions between pemphigus vulgaris and a history of using systemic corticosteroids as predictors of diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension, osteoporosis, and insomnia.Conclusions: Safer and more effective systemic treatment options are needed for pemphigus to minimize iatrogenic complications of disease.

8. Potential relationship between Rosacea and Parkinson’s disease

Abstract

Rosacea is a common inflammatory condition characterized by transient or persistent facial erythema, telangiectasias, papules and pustules, for which an association has been reported to exist with Parkinson's disease (PD). We used a large, urban, single center, electronic medical record repository by searching the Northwestern Medicine Enterprise Data Warehouse (NMEDW) (> 4 million patients) for this association. Patients were included if they had an in-person encounter (Jan 2001 to May 2016) and with 1 year documentation of follow-up. Of these, all patients diagnosed with rosacea (ICD-9 codes: 372.31; 695.3, ICD-10 codes: L71.8; L71.9) and with a subsequent diagnosis of PD (ICD-9 code: 332; ICD-10 code: G20) were selected. Data on age, gender, race and tetracycline class therapy were collected. Adjusted odds ratio (OR) was obtained by using logistic regression analysis. A total of 815,210 patients were detected. 18,066 were diagnosed with rosacea, of whom 51 were subsequently diagnosed with PD (mean age: 74.5 years, range 53-89).
